Profanity/hateful speech reaching new peaks
No thanks
Implementation of a Code of Conduct is the first step in a SJW takeover of a space.
Pretty much this.
A code of conduct isn’t necessary. This is the internet, people say things. Get over it. It’s not gonna hurt you. etc, etc, etc, things we’re all already thinking
Actually, the “grow up, get over it” crowd are the very people that would get silenced/kickbanned if ToS they agreed to when they bought the game were enforced properly. :P
Not entirely true, when reading some of this, I do feel that ways some times. Yet I rarely if ever curse in game.
Though my thought on it is /block /report work just fine. The problem with saying the ToS should be “properly” enforced is: Define properly, what constitutes to much is a personal level.

The catch here is, you are on the GW2 servers, where you agreed to abide by certain rules.

I wonder how GW2 would look to people on the outside if people were actively and consistently being banned for saying “bad words”.

Do you mean like people in real life when you say on the outside?
I know in some establishments you may be asked to leave if you are being vulgar or disruptive. If you refuse and continue your actions there are legal ramifications.

No, I mean people in other games who might consider playing this one.
“Yeah just don’t say any bad words or they’ll ban you.”
It is not so much the profane words being used, but how profane words are being used against a person. There are also ways of wording things that do not involve profane words (many of us know) that are either used for the intent to be offensive or passive.
If someone is using profane words every now and then (whichever one(s) they choose) to express excitement, playfulness, etc., they are, generally speaking, okay, so long they are not directed at a person to which then they are seen as outright vulgar and very offensive because they are being used offensively rather than passively, and it is at that point such behavior is interpreted as harassment, which should be reported, or block the player.

That’s nothing wait for raids to come out i have seen 50 year old mean act like children
in other games it will bring it out in ppl here to it’s one reason why i am not for raids at all in this game

“Yeah just don’t say any bad words or they’ll ban you.”
Ohh! I think the OP means a little more extreme then just dropping a kitten bomb (yes I typed kitten! Sorry kitty lovers).
Just saying bad words is no big deal, harassment is another issue.
Of course that’s my issue with the issue, whats to much for one person might be just fine for another.
It’s not like the way they’re using these “profane words” are going to somehow magically circumvent the block feature. lol
Just try it, spend a few days in PVP.
I’ve been PvPing a bit more recently and the only rude thing I’ve seen is one of my teammates attacking the enemy team during a dance party before the game started. This probably changes at higher levels (I’m only rank 11 so far) but where I am, no one really says anything. And if they did say something rude, I’d just block them.
Then again, I have a lot of time invested in League of Legends and Smite, where the salt for any average game eclipses anything I’ve seen in my entire time playing GW2. MOBA games are also much, much longer than sPvP games and the punishment for leaving is much higher, so it can be a troll’s playground. Comparatively, bad-mannered players in GW2 are extremely few and far between.
Seriously, I recommend a one-strike rule. Block+report anyone the instant they say anything rude or mean. Works wonders.
How to Condi Reaper on a budget
Everything I say is only in reference to PvE and WvW.
I PvP every day, and the worst I ever see is ocasionally someone gloats about how amazing they are at dragonhunter or something. Nearly 1200 games.
I stand by the belief that the OP is just extremely thin-skinned.
TL:DR – Context clues are a basic reading skill.
Context is what matters. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with a “curse word”. Some can be used as pretty much every part of speech, and can do more than “insult”. They can ADD emotion, or emphasis.
If they are “abusing” you cause they said a bad word.. chill. block. report. If they are actually antagonizing you. I.E. psting you WAY after the fact, taking the subject to another aspect of the game or outside it, stalking etc.
Fine.
But they say a singular bad word after getting downed or something?
Deal.
People have the right to express. Whether or not you prefer their chosen words or not, can express too.
Block/Report You’re playing pvp. Where the objective is to kill the other person’s pixels. You’re literally tearing someone apart virtually. You’re allowing other people to hit you and punch you, and you can’t handle some kitten talking? Nope, sorry. No. PvP is PvP. Where players fight other players… period… on every level.
If you don’t like then stop pvp’ing because your pixels are going to get hurt, over and over again.
And… if you can’t handle the occasional bit of crap (I actually get tons of angry messages in wvw through the block/whisper, to the point of personal threats) then just block and report them, or realize that the likelihood of them hurting you in real life is really, really, really small.
Since so many are so dead set against seeing any “swears”, I’ll stop using profanity when people can explain why profanity is bad.
So far nobody has ever been able to give me a good reason. It’s always “they just are!” and “iI’m offended because i was taught to be offended!”.
Think about it, and maybe you’ll realize profanity isn’t even worth discussing. Not talking about directed and targeted abuse here either, but the words themselves.
Profanity is bad because it’s against the Terms of Service you agreed to when you signed up to play in ANET’s playground. What you do in your own time is your business, and I honestly couldn’t care less if you communicate solely via a complex organization exclusively comprised of profanity. What you do in GW2 is ANET’s business.
I don’t understand this idea that words don’t have power. The words we use absolutely have power. In many ways, language shapes how we perceive the world. “The pen (kitten not needed) is mightier than the sword” is meaningful for a reason. If you even did a cursory study of linguistics, or even basic communication classes, you’d know that words have power.
I’m not saying that there aren’t instances where people are over-sensitive. I’m just saying that it’s wrong to perpetuate this idea that you can say whatever the kitten you want and it doesn’t effect people. It does. Own up to that.
EDIT: A wild kitten appeared in my quote about pens and swords!

I have to get to work but this is a good point. Words can have power. However in this situation they only have power if you let them. In real life if someone is trash taking you about how your son does drugs because you failed as a parent that is much different than someone trash talking you because you stomped them in pvp and you’re playin a “scrub” build. If anyone is seriously offended by people in pvp who really can only comment on how crappy their play style is, or how they aren’t contributing enough, etc. Things that relate to the game you don’t have to take that personally. If you are that’s your choice, but most people with a higher level of maturity or resilency won’t be bothered. You can’t really attack someone personally like my former example because you don’t know that person in real life. The only exception is a long time guild mate who you consider to be a friend and knows you on a more personal level doing something nasty and making it personal.

That is very much true. I’m afraid one has to agree to the terms and conditions set by the service and free speech is not something a private business has to offer.
In venues that do not allow cussing, I do not, because my participation is based on those rules. On forums that do allow it, I use it whenever, because that’s how I normally speak. Sure, I think there’s no need to care about casually saying the word kitten out of context but I am not really sure if people are getting banned left or right.
On the subject of growing up, failing to understand why going into another space and making up your own rules is probably a sign one needs to grow up a bit more.
for there you have been and there you will long to return.

Explain to me kind sir, for what has been Profanity Filter function implemented then.
Because if we did agree to not use profanity in game and so on, then such function is useless since day one.
Therefore any ToS break should be accordingly punished.
Since it’s ignored – because level isn’t ridiculous yet – it means that Profanity Filter has it’s purpose and can be used accordingly by people who would feel offended by reading such language.
Well, for me it’s yolo.
I’m rather surprised there are such “Saint” people who feel offended by a swear, even not directed at them particularly.

Oh man, someone on the internet said something offensive in a competitive video game.
No matter the policy, it is effectively impossible to police this kind of activity to the level the OP seems to desire.
Block and report. That’s why they are there.

Effectively, this. I’ve worked with a coworker that was adamant about no profanity, and wouldn’t even pick up games that had profanity in them. He’s pretty much what I consider the extremist. On the other hand, a coworker at the same job cursed as much as I do, but tended to be profane with customers in earshot. He was the other end of the extreme.
But,
While there is a profanity filter option in settings, many have it disabled simply because they don’t mind the occasional f* words, but the level of cussing some people demonstrate is getting out of control and requires heavy moderation.
this is willfully disabling the thing “protecting you.” If you’re whining with it off, you’ve crossed into a territory where you’re objectively wrong.
It’s PvP. It’s inherently competitive. Being toxic, like throwing the game in a fit of rage, is one thing. But telling you that you don’t know how to play when you’re in a match? Maybe take the advice, even if it’s harsh.
On that note, I’ll mention that ArenaNet has already deleted my post, even though it included no profanity or otherwise harmful verbage. I find it ironic that this occurred simply because I voiced my opinion, likely because it was contrary to ArenaNet’s opinion. The way they operate occasionally resembles fascism, and it’s quite sad to see. Unfortunately deleting and suppressing something doesn’t make it any less true.
Yeah man, there’s no harmful verbiage in calling everyone who disagrees with your opinion what amounts to a “socially kittened basement dweller.” /s

But only if that nation, or person, allows them to. What we believe is up to us. That is my point. I’d also like to add that It would be difficult for words to influence anything, if they are prohibited from even being spoken, which has happened in communist countries.
Your previous post was probably taken down because some readers may have found it offensive… Which while I didn’t report it, the opening statements were offensive.
You’re right, a person can choose to allow words affect them or not. How ever society as a whole accepts and changes beliefs based on words. I’m simply saying, words matter, they aren’t as you said “sand in the wind” besides even sand in the wind can hurt if it gets in your eye.
The mcdonalds/toyota thing I didn’t see when I replied to you earlier. An advertisement is a totally different arena then insulting someone.

EDIT: A wild kitten appeared in my quote about pens and swords!
My point is not that words do not have power, because they absolutely do, but rather that most people can’t explain why they find curse words offensive at all. They literally have no idea what exactly makes a swear word a swear word and thus I find it ridiculous that people get “offended” by them. Most people have literally just been conditioned to respond negatively to profanity but have never bothered to think about why those words are supposedly so bad. Imo if you can’t explain why a curse word is bad you lose the right to be offended by it. A word only has power if you choose to allow it to have power after all.
If someone is targeting and harrassing you that’s a different thing entirely, because the intent is to cause harm and the issue isn’t the words at all. I absolutely cannot stand the carebears that see a swear word in the chat that is not directed at them and get “offended” and report people. They have no right to be offended.
There’s a swear filter for a reason and i find it completely ridiculous that people can disable it and then report people for using profanity, and that Anet actually BANS people for it. I mean come on why is the filter even there? I can see banning for intentional abuse of a specific person, and even if for avoiding the filter so people have to see curses even with the filter enabled, but i do not agree with reporting people simply for using curse words.
block them if you simply cannot stand seeing a curse word, but for the love of god do NOT report people using profanity if it is not explicitly directed at you with the intent to cause harm.
Welcome to the internet. Welcome to any MMO. The “Block” function is there for a reason. Good luck.

It’s just a social norm. We live in a society with rules and social acceptable practices. That is the best answer there is to this.

The way you depicted what I said borders on hyperbole, even if it’s sort of accurate. However, calling someone a “socially kittened basement dweller” is not half as bad as just deleting their opinion entirely. Wouldn’t it be nice if I had that power?

Actually it totally is. In the real world you face consequences for your actions and if you are nasty to other players profanity or not then you deserve the punishment. In an online game ppl say whatever the heck they want (again not related to profanity) and regardless of how bad it is they don’t suffer any consequences.
I’d like to call attention to the fact that telling people to “ignore it” “man up” or “stop being so sensitive” is actually not addressing the problem. If people are insanely rude in a game and nothing is done about it what kind of game does that make it? Will new players who are VITAL to an MMO going to stay around? You’re ignoring the problem here.
Yes, people have gotten increasingly rude since HoT released. It isn’t limited to PvP but also PvE. (WvW is anonymous so no problems there).
Adult language in Guild chat – not an issue if the guild is okay with it.
In Map/World/Say chat – needs to adhere to the ToS.
Stuff your language filter in your bum. Saying block them lets them keep being @$$hats and not having to be accountable for their actions.
If a guy sitting in the next boot keeps breaking wind with the stench of death, you better not complain. Just put a clothes pin on your nose and ignore him.

You kind of do have that option in game.. I mean /block name, any and all new opinions from them will never make it to your chat bar xD.
Any way, I think we might be drifting off topic here, I’m curious if the OP could give us an example of what was excessive. I mean one or two Kitten bombs is prety normal, and even trash talk between players isn’t uncommon. Some times people do get carried away and it turns just plain ugly.
Over all though, I still don’t see how the block and report function doesnt do the trick.
