1) If you’re intending to be a bit of a jerk then I guess it’s not wrong, but I’m not quite sure what you’re expecting to happen here. If they’re asking as soon as they enter the map they’re probably asking about events which may have been called just before they entered. There is no way to see what was said on map chat (or any other channel) before you joined so even if it was said just a few seconds before they have absolutely no way of knowing that without asking, and unless it’s a very busy map and/or a very popular event it may not get called multiple times. So if they don’t ask they could miss out.
2) I haven’t been to Queensdale in a while but most zones in my server (Desolation) seem to vary between periods of high activity and relatively quiet, which is when people are likely to start asking for events. It’s never gotten to the point where it’s bothered me. I’ve been more disappointed in the few people I’ve seen trying to insist that map chat should only be used to call events and kept clear of all other conversation, although thankfully they’re rare.

Maybe we just need an “Events” chat channel for finding and organizing events. Mapchat can then be freed up for more frivolous conversation.

yes you are in the wrong and you clearly know it . As for the server I’m on sure we get people who ask about events and shockingly enough people are actually polite enough to tell them about the events .

Oh, I call events whenever possible. (Event starts, I’m not in combat/no threat of dying.) I’ll even list the nearest waypoint and the direction to head when you get to the WP.
And everybody else does as well.
…so why are people asking when the information is readily available? I’d say, during prime hours, events are called with AT MOST a minute or so between them.
EDIT: I should have said… GW2 is my first MMO, though I played GW1 for about a thousand hours. So part of this might be that I just don’t “get” the impatience of MMO players. I’ve seen this with dungeons and zerker elitism as well, so I guess maybe it’s an extension of the same thing?

People are too impatient. I look at timers for events or wander the zone til I see one or it’s called in map chat. There’s no need to zone in and immediately spam map chat. It’s not a race
Most people asking in chat are likely just zoning in and are trying to catch events that may already be happening and may already have been announced before they zoned. They aren’t doing it to annoy you.
Most people don’t want to wonder around waiting for events to pop. So they ask. We’re looking to get our daily done ASAP so we can log off, or get to the fun stuff.
Luckily on my server everyone is really helpful ..almost competitively so .. (“too many resers!”) and when someone asks about an event, 3-4 ppl post WPs right away.
If they’re in the wrong, you don’t have to be either with your replies. Their “events?” inquiries might bring down the mapchat quality, but so does smart kitten comments in reply to them. Ignore them or don’t say anything.
I feel the same way like you about them (save the map chat for better discussion), but I don’t act on it because it does nothing positive.
Asking for events just seems like laziness to me. The same goes with asking when something is up such as SB. People should have done events enough times to know where they are and which ones a frequently up. As far as spawn times, there’s a website that tracks that and takes 5 sec to check.
We’re looking to get our daily done ASAP so we can log off, or get to the fun stuff.
But isn’t playing the game the fun stuff? When it comes to events, don’t you just get those as part of playing the game?
Let me give a counter-example that I can understand why people would ask on mapchat: “Any group events up?” Group events tend to be harder to find, run less often, and can’t always be done easily with just a couple people. So when those are part of the dailies, I can see asking…
…but events are running ALL OVER and are being called every minute (in Queensdale, at least). I guess that’s where I have a harder time with what seems like (to me) EXTREME impatience.
(Also, I hope I’m not coming as aggressive or insulting here, I really am just trying to get a better feel for this and see things from somebody else’s perspective. I appreciate the responses.)

Hrm. But those timers aren’t always correct, so I can see where it’d be helpful to ask.

In Queensdale events are literally all over the place all of the time on my server (GH) and still you have people asking- sure you’ll get some one zoning in and asking BeHe up?
But often you have the same 2-3 people spamming chat for 20 min.
I don’t get that honestly people are linking events as fast as they go off.
It seems like some on my server either feels like Op or are just new but I loved it that the norm is now to link every event ( eda’s orchard, escort quests wheatfield you name it)
The result of this has been that you literally have a zerg of 80’s swarming a level 3 event- I don’t know whether to laugh or feel bad for new players- they must be thinking what ? just happened?
We’re looking to get our daily done ASAP so we can log off, or get to the fun stuff.
But isn’t playing the game the fun stuff? When it comes to events, don’t you just get those as part of playing the game?
People play and have fun with GW2 differently.
Ex: I’ve have tons of fun doing fractals, dungeons, etc but then my bedtime is coming up and I realize that I haven’t completed my dailies (I’m collecting Laurels). So I have to rush to do them as fast as possible so I don’t lose sleep.
1) There is a generation of players that have been trained to only join activites that are preplanned for them. Yes, that can lead to some of the impatience that is often seen in the queries in mapchat in Queensdale (and the other lower zones).
2) Often, it is just the case that someone has logged on after an event has been announced and has missed the call out.
I always make an attempt to do the following: only in the timeframe when the zone is loaded with players (usually from daily reset to an hour or so after). (yes, poor new players to the game.. but ANet wants those zones to look “alive”).
. Call out in mapchat: /map [delved waypoint] starting boar champ
. Call out in mapchat: /map [delved waypoint] Boar Champ up (when it finally spawns)
. if inquries are happening during event, and the event is proceeding slowly enough for other players to get there and join: /map Boar at 30%
. and I always announce when the event is over (so folks don’t spend unnecessary time / coin traveling.)
At some point in all that, there is almost always someone who has just logged on and asked about events. They can tell from chat at that point what is happening, or another player, or myself will just let them know in mapchat (again.)
And yes, I often skip responding to a query if I am tanking the champion for the players gathered at the event. Priorities.
In the case of 1) above with impatient players spamming chat the minute they log in and the minute an event ends… yes, I can understand being frustrated. I usually end up putting them on /block if they are spamming are we there yet? are we there yet? too much.
Which means I am then free to go about my business being polite and hopefully helping those in situation 2).
ps: 80’s swooping in an one-shotting everything is an issue raised months ago. My guildmates and I try to be very metered in our DPS when there are lowbies around so they have a chance to contribute. Sometimes, though, it’s just a case where we have to hit the thing or go down, sorry, please take the whole dailies design / downranking issues up with ANet. (has posted about and acknowledges this is a trade-off). Luckily with enough folks in the zone, events pop again very quickly.

Wayfarer Foothills is no better with the Maw event. It used to be every 30 minutes or so, and it’s not now. Maw? Maw?
Any event? Maw? Maw? Maw? When is the maw? Maw?
Aw, how long since the last Maw? (like anyone here was there for the last one, now that the reward is account bound…)
Maw? Maw?
Friedhoefe: It’s like the teacher in the Peanuts movies. “Maw maw maw maw, maw maw? Maw maw, maw maw maw.” :-)
Okay, my feelings after getting some feedback:
1) I should probably stop trying to shame people who are “Event?” spamming because it won’t work and just makes me look like a jerk.
2) Impatience is just something I have to deal with.
3) There are people who share in my frustration here, at least!
Thanks guys.

1) I know I’m being a bit of a jerk, that’s intentional, but am I wrong here?
Yes.
You are being a jerk. You know you are being a jerk. You know it’s wrong to be a jerk. You know you’re wrong.
Just ignore them. Be a better person.
Oh god last night wayfarer foot hills got pretty messy on fort aspenwood last night. I do not find suicide jokes amusing in any form..
My reply is usually along the lines of:
Some friendly people on map chat have been shouting them out as they happen. One should be along shortly.
I just copy/paste the timer url. Some of the lower lvl/new players just don’t know.
I announce them when they pop, other than that I just remember that I didn’t have a clue at one time too and appreciated the help.
Now if I only I could find some patient group/person to introduce me to dungeons.
(2 lvl 80s all exotic and some acsended—and yep no dungeon exp).

This is, by all means, the best response I’ve seen so far on this forum. I need to roll an Asura too and troll map chat like a pro!
Ignore them..you’ll feel better, if not maybe take some time outside of Queensdale you know like the rest of the game?
Fields of Ruin is a nice peaceful map try that..

Thanks Timmy, but I’m on Eredon.
I find the requests for events in Queensdale humorous. Can’t spend more than, what is it, 8 minutes? in Queensdale without at least one event happening.
“Troll up.”

Baby don’t hurt me. Don’t hurt me. No maw…
Hit me baby one maw time.
No! Sleep! Til Champ Wurm!

I usually only call out if I’m looking for Group Events, since you typically need a decent amount of players to complete those. Putting out the word that one is up and that there are people willing to do it goes a long way towards getting sufficient players together to complete it.

thats your problem then.
ever thought it to be polite etiquette to inform event hunters that theres no events going on and just be sociable?
I have given up calling events UNLESS they are party ones because I never ask for them. I enter a map and wander around till I fall over them. People are always complaining about being bored etc yet they want to do everything in the shortest time with no real effort put in.
Someone has to put in the leg work to find the events and events are supposed to be encountered at random. Why should the same few people who actually play the game make it so much easier for USUALLY the people with X lvl 80 alts who just want to do it fast with no effort put in.
So yep you can feel free to call me unsociable etc but I play the game myself I dont expect everyone else to do the work for me
Someone has to put in the leg work to find the events
But he plays an asura?
I don’t mind people asking about a long timer meta event. But my first thought re people who spam “any events up” is “play the zone a bit, events happen”
Actually my only real peeve is the “any Veterans up” spam. I have replied “yes. All over. They even respawn”
Personally, I don’t mind people asking if an event is up. Chances are they just zoned in and are wondering if they may have missed something. What bothers me is when someone asks for a timer update. They obviously know there is a resource for the timers or else they wouldn’t be asking in the first place, and yet they can’t be bothered to look up the timer themselves.
Of course, this could easily be resolved by ANet just putting the timers in game somewhere and not requiring players to go to a 3rd party website that requires player updating to view them.
I find your sense of obligation weird. Who said you should answer them? And why should it bother you when it isn’t the same person spamming it?

The event chat is the tamest part of Tarnished Coast Queensdale. Remove that, and what you have left is Barrens Chat circa Vanilla. No Chuck Norris these days, but plenty of arrows getting lodged in crucial ambulatory joints.
@OP, here is a suggestion
I always have 2 chat windows running, one just for map chat, the other just for guild chat. If I am in a party, I open another chat window just for party chat. I prefer to keep chat convo organised and uncluttered.
I spend the vast majority of my time with the guild chat window active, thus ignoring all the silly map chat spam. I only tab to the map chat window just before group events, and only very briefly. Sometimes, if i am not busy with something else, I will monitor map chat to see if someone needs help with a SP or the like.
Doing this might reduced your urge to be a ‘smartypants’ …
Well ppl what you talking about will never read this topic or even forums. They are rednecks what barely know how to log in and swing the sword.
Tekkit’s Workshop
I think Queensdale is the same on every server.
It consists of:
1. People asking about/announcing events
2. People who are new asking questions/people answering questions
3. People being friendly and social
4. People who are grouchy and take out all their frustrations on any and everyone else in chat
5. People who are seeking attention and start fights by a variety of means
The balance changes as to which of those are the majority of the chat at any one time. When 4&5 become the majority of the chat I switch over to my “less chat” window which does not include map chat.

But I like being social and chatting on mapchat! SoR is a great place to have (oftentimes rather odd) conversations with my servermates.
I have an All (really just map say party guild team squad) chat, a Party+Guild chat, and a Combat/Messages tab. That setup works pretty well for me.

This is a natural consequence of 1) events being part of daily’s, combined with 2) dailies are now a major way to get ascended gear.
Many people are pressed for time to get their daily, not so much because of the daily roll over, but because other demands on their time may mean they have limited time to play GW2 on any given day. But they still want to get the daily if possible, because that will shorten the duration of their grind to get the ascended gear they want. Events are especially prone to this problem as they are a fast way to tick off multiple parts of a dailys (total kills, kill variety, veterans, champions, people to heal, etc.), as well as being quick XP, karma and loot.
So more people are genuinely in a hurry to find events, which means more people asking about events as soon as they arrive in the map (the last thing they want is to miss a major event just because they logged onto the zone 1s after the announcement went out). Just something to live with.
TLDR: map chat requests for events are an inevitable feature of Gw2 right now so we may as well learn to live with them.
Timmyf, I feel your pain. I don’t get narky about it though, not on map chat anyway. People don’t want to see the smartarse comments my computer screen has to hear. Troll, oak, boar, and wasp are constantly being called so people only have to wait a minute or two for something to come up.
Would you like some hard cheeze with your sad whine?
