Hooray!!!! I finally got my first level 80 character after 130 hours (129 hrs 33 mins to be exact) of gameplay. I leveling through exploration, a little sPvP and a little WvW. I didn’t use any booster or any tome of knowledge. Judging from the forum posts, I might be the slowest level 80 EVAR (among the actively leveling players). However, I learnt that “level” in GW2 is not the same “level” I used to know from other MMORPGs, so I am going to share some other parameters of my character.

Profession: Elementalist
Achievement Points: 952
Map completion: 47%
Wallet: ~60 golds

CRA (Common Replies & Answers)

Before I start sharing my opinions, let me first answer a few common replies I got from my previous posts.

R1: Are you trolling?
A1: No, I am not. I do not troll. I share only my truest opinions and want to see how others think.

R2: Leave/This game is not for you/You should play xx
A2: I am old enough to walk away from something I don’t like. It takes some love to come to a game forum; it takes more love to write a post; it takes a lot of love to write such a long post. Look at how organized my posts are. So, stop asking me to leave. I love GW2. I know almost every mainstream MMORPGs in the market so stop asking me to play other games, which I have already decided not to play. Given that xx=WoW too often, I think I need to say something about WoW. I don’t like WoW’s graphics, combat system, artwork (especially this), subscription based, and it’s too old. I will never play WoW.

Review

Finally, the review. I am going to talk about three things in my review: things I like, things that I have a love/hate relationship, and things I don’t like. I will list things I like/dislike the most first, so order matters. If I have suggestions about that particular topic, I will mention it at the end of that topic.

Note: When I say I don’t like it, I mean I don’t like it. I didn’t ask it to change (well, I will be happy if it changes) nor complaining about it. I am not your gf or your wife. I don’t hide meanings in my words. I mean what the words mean.

Things I Like

  • Skill System
Easily the best skill system I have ever seen in MMORPGs. Instead of having a bunch of useless skills that I will never put on my skill bar, GW2 limits us to weapon skills (1-5) depending on our weapon. So, like it or not, you have to learn how to use them.
Utility skill are like the normal skills system we have in other MMORPGs. We get skill points, we learn it, and we use it. The difference being we can only choose 3 from the set, instead of putting all of them on your skill bars (yea, skill barS). You will have so many skill bars that will cover part of your screen (then I can’t even see shxx) and you don’t even have enough keys to bind them (so you start using key combinations).
The utility skill set almost (buff flame axe and earth shield!!! these two are the main reasons I use almost) doesn’t have any skills that are useless (while other MMORPGs, there are skills you know you should never learn). Limiting players to pick only 3 utility skills diversifies the profession. You can be a conjure weapons elementalist (if they fix flame axe and earth shield), arcane elementalist, or mix-and-match elementalist. The same goes for slot 6 and slot 0.
Then, there are traits. Traits are like passive skills in other MMORPGs, but wayyyyy better passive skills compared to normal passive skills (+atk or +def, booooring). Again, limiting players to a certain utility points allows builds.
  • Professions
I didn’t actually expect much for professions. I mean, how can it be interesting? Different stats? Different skills? Different armor/weapon sets? Different appearance? Anet slammed at my face with 8 professions (9th coming) with different mechanisms.
Professions or classes in other MMORPGs normally only differ in stats and skills. In GW2, professions differ in the whole gameplay! Swapping attunements, getting pets, summons disgusting minions (sorry, necromancers, but Reaper is cool), and so much more.
Every professions have their own mechanism! What else can we ask for?
Advance class. It’s an asian MMORPG old school system. They don’t even have it anymore today, but I really love job advancing system. You can turn into something fancier when you reach a level. For example, swordsman->paladin. This, GW2 does not hacaskcdvjasmdas….. Anet just slammed my face with my keyboard again. They call it, Elite Specialization. No, I have nothing else to complain about the profession system in GW2. It is simply perfect.
  • Creative Contents
Other than the kill x mobs quests, there are so many creative things to do to fill the renowned hearts. I can’t even list down all of them because there are so many.
Even each dungeon’s path has a different mechanic for us to play and solve, instead of the traditional dungeon system (kill mobs->kill boss->kill mobs->kill final boss).
World bosses are not only about dps, tank and healing too. For example, the god dxxn evolved jungle wurm (btw, I have never succeeded).
There are so many other creative things to do as well, such as jumping puzzle and guild rush.
  • World vs World vs World
The main reason I am here. THIS. IS. AWESOME. The moment I saw WvW in GW2, I bought the game. Even I suck in WvW, I love it. I love large scale war like this. Not only large scale, WvW has so many game mechanisms in it, claim objectives and upgrade objectives. It feels like a real war zone. OMG, I am so excited.
[Suggestion] Only earning points to climb up the leaderboard seems a little dull. Here are my little suggestions, but the loosing world might have very little fun. So, make it really hard.
-Give each world a county (borderland) that they own.
-Then, a bunch of neutral lands.
-Finally, put all worlds together (Worlds vs Worlds).
    -No reset.
-Big objectives are much harder to conquer (such that conquering a fort will be a big news) and more upgrades.
  • Community
Easily the best community I have ever met. I got free golds, I got free armor, and I saw players helping players. I have never seen an MMORPG community this friendly before.
Another thing is I have mentioned a couple times I play GW2 using a Mac. No one has shouted at me yet. This actually surprised me. Every single time I mentioned I play games on Mac, these crazy you-should-not-play-game-on-mac or you-should-not-use-mac people shouting at me. I am grateful that people like this in GW2 community have not show up yet.
Well, there are some exception of course. I will ignore those and consider the everyone in GW2 are good people.
  • Graphics and Artwork
Tyria is so beautiful that sometimes I will stop exploring, just sit there and look at it.
  • Available on Mac
I only have a Macbook Pro. So, it is very handy to me. I don’t have to start Bootcamp every time just to play a game.
  • Story
This is the first MMORPG’s story I really look into. I never expect story in MMORPG.

Things I love/hate

  • Casualness
    Like
I don’t have too much time to play. So, it’s good. Things are easy to get (even legendaries are attainable), no kill steal, and I can access to all contents.
    Dislike
When I play an MMORPG, I don’t simply play it. I live in it while I am playing it. I am not a GW2 player, I am an adventurer in Tyria. It is weird that I can access to all contents and everyone play on an equal ground. That are supposed to be things I cannot get unless I work very very hard. There should be places that only a very small portion of the players have reached. There should be players that are so OP that no one can defeat them. If they are defeated, everyone will be talking about it. I didn’t get to experience these things in GW2.
With share loot, I don’t need a party. This also makes the game feel like a single player game with other players running around.
When I talk to my friend about GW2, I will ask them, “Have you done that?”, instead of “Have you heard of that?”. I only ask “Have you done that?” in Single Player games. For example, you don’t ask “Have you try to become a CEO in Apple? It’s fun!” or “Have you launched nuclear missile before?” in real life.
  • Multiple Characters
    Like
As mentioned in “Things I like”, GW2 has awesome professions with very different mechanisms. It is a MUST to try all of them.
    Dislike
Like I mentioned above, I dive in to the game world instead of playing the game. I will role play my character. So, I have only a character in any MMORPG I have played, possible a few alt character for extra bank slots. That character is me, Katalos. It’s me in the game world. That’s why I don’t play games like DotA or LoL where you do not have a character. Having multiple characters screw my role playing. I can’t be an adventurer in Tyria. I am actually adventurers in Tyria (is this even grammatically correct??). I am mind blown for this.
However, I do have a solution for this. I named my ele “Katalos The Wizard”. My upcoming characters will be named “Katalos The xx” as well. This eases the problem a little bit. So, I am still Katalos. Katalos with the ability to change my profession.
  • Dynamic Events
    Like
Another reason I am here, a world that is alive.
    Dislike
Sometime I just drop by some dynamic events that I have no idea what is going on.
  • World Boss
    Like
Large scale fights, my favorite thing in MMORPG.
    Dislike
Small world bosses: Why are they even world bosses?? I can’t see them because there are so many people.
World bosses that do not require organization: Simple attack rotation will do, nothing much going on here.
World bosses that require organization: It is fun when there are people leading; it is a disaster when there are no people leading.
  • Power Step (notice that power used here is not the power attribute)
    Like
Player won’t get overpowered easily against mobs. So, low level mobs are not “invisible” even when we are nicely geared.
    Dislike
I can barely feel the difference my hardly earned gear is making. It is not so rewarding getting geared up.
  • Scaled Level
    Like
Won’t get overpowered, low level map is always relevant.
    Dislike
I feel discouraged. I don’t feel like I have progressed over the adventures I had.
  • sPvP
    Like
Everyone plays equally. You won’t get killed simply because your gears are not as good as your opponents.
    Dislike
I like games that depends on player skills, but not games that depends solely on player skills. It feels like a sport. Another reason I dislike is the same as the reason I dislike the casualness.
  • Dungeon
    Like
First, it has story. Then, it has different creative mechanic in different paths. It is much better than the traditional dungeon. It has some difficulty for a party too.
    Dislike
First, the story. Due to the fact that it is not solo-able, I have to coordinate with other players. When I first enter it, I want to watch the cutscenes and read the dialogs to understand the story. However, almost all players want to do speed run. When I am done with my cutscene, my teammates are already somewhere else.
[Suggestion] Make dungeon’s story mode solo-able, so I can read the story slowly by myself. Remove exploration mode’s cutscenes, make the story easily readable.

Things I dislike

  • Combat system
I love action combat system (so, again, stop suggesting WoW). The best action combat system I have played is Monster Hunter, and the second best doesn’t even come close. MH has no “dodge skill” that will make you invulnerable during the animation. “Dodge” is simply a method of moving. You move out from the attack, you dodge it. You move into the attack, you get hit. That’s the “dodge” part.
Then, the mobs part. In GW2, it is impossible to dodge every melee attacks because the mobs just come to you and attack without any pre animation. Almost every mobs have no pre animation. Only a few mobs and bosses have pre animation for their attack. In addition, we can only dodge twice at a time. So, I don’t even bother to dodge now, unless it is a big attack. In a result, GW2 is not so “action” compared to games like MH, Tera and Dragon Nest.
  • Level
Level in GW2 is simply useless. I don’t feel anything when I level up (level where attributes are improved). It acts only as a content gate (which is not so relevant too, you can’t solo AC and will get kicked joining team that says “exp 80s only” when you are at level 30 anyway).
[Suggestion] Removed level in GW2. It is simply useless. How are you going to gate content?? I have thought about this.
-Remove content gate. You got scaled down anyway. Low level player will get kill in high level map. So, content gate not required.
-Add weapon mastery. Each weapon type has an exp bar, skills 1-5 get unlocked slowly as you use the weapon repeatedly. After that, skills 1-5 slowly get powered up (higher damage, longer effect duration, etc.). This encourages players to use all weapon types and get rewarded for it (I have not used Scepter and Focus before, but I have all they skills unlocked for free). You thought I copied this from the HoT mastery system? No. I copied it from a JRPG, Tales of series.
  • Guild System
No guild wars in Guild Wars 2??? Guild only act as a social platform for me so far. Luckily my guild is very active and has a schedule for players organized events. However, we need more guild competitive contents!!! Guild Hall system in HoT better be good.
  • Age of the Game
It’s a 3 years old game. The new player based is very small. New players are not like unicorn, but they are definitely like rhino. I can hardly find new players like me to wonder the world stupidly together.
  • Armor/Weapon
Not a lot of variety here, except skins. Most people will go for berserker sets. I wish they can fix other prefix so each prefix has their own benefits.
  • Armor/Weapon Skin (this is the last one, so, just a little bit dislike)
There aren’t really a lot of armor/weapon skins in GW2 (I don’t really mind this now, given that I have not collected many of them). The armor/weapon in GW2 in not too fancy. There are rarely armor/weapon sets that can attract me so that I will stop exploring the world and look at the player who is wearing it (which happened very frequently when I am playing asian MMORPGs). I like the legendary weapon special effects, but I don’t think there are any armor with special effects. This is mainly due to my taste, so it’s not on Anet. However, I wish they can launch more armor/weapon skins.

Some of your points are good, especially the aimless of some events. Some tell amazing stories, some are just too random. And yes, small world bosses seem out of place amongst huge zergs.

I disagree with a lot though. Monster Hunter has an abominable combat system. Utterly unintuitive and every bit the opposite of the fluid, fun system I enjoy here. I also disagree with your dislike for casualness. I find it to be an overwhelming selling point and strength to the game. I understand your sentiment, i just dont think it applies to this game.

I also find the number of skins for weapons and armour huge. The sheer variety of combos i see daily is still something that impresses me daily.

I understand your sentiments on levelling being useless. But that ship has sailed. It isnt worth the resources to change it to be honest 3 years on

Good point on story dungeon. But the speed run issue is something that needs addressing rather than the story itself. Im ambivalent on whether they should be soloable

That is right in the ballpark. Figure about an hour and a half per level (more or less depending on your play style). That is for ‘normal’ play and not doing things like tomes or any other power leveling technique. Since GW2 has dynamic downleveling in the PVE content (and everyone is pretty much the same in WVW and PVP) there is less of a reason to be at max level than there is in most MMORPGs. The result is it is as much about the journey as the destination.

That will probably change though. With HOT requiring 80s, having a new profession out people are drooling over, and getting 10 (or 16) tomes per month I suspect you will start seeing a lot of level 80 revenants within minutes of the release.

A lot of people will go on and on about not being a ‘serious’ player if you take the amount of time to level that anet expects it will take. My normal response to them is ‘lioness you’.

Just for the record that weapon mastery thing was how they used to do it. It was too easy to unlock all the weapon skills at low level and was too much trouble to balance.

Dodging in MH grants a very short invulnerability period. Evade +1 and +2 extend it to a duration long enough that you can use that invulnerability very intentionally, though MH does have the caveat that some things can never be dodged at all.

I disagree with a lot though. Monster Hunter has an abominable combat system. Utterly unintuitive and every bit the opposite of the fluid, fun system I enjoy here.

MH’s controls are horrid, but the numerous functions have to be mapped to buttons somehow. Once you learn the controls it’s not too bad. Each weapon also provides a distinct combat style, combo set, etc, with their own strengths and weaknesses. When appropriately geared (as opposed to overgeared), teamwork ranges from being useful to absolutely necessary. GW2 PvE combat can (and often does) boil down to mashing 1 and dodging when necessary. Boss fights/champs/etc are a complete and total clusterkitten here because there’s no trinity, no aggro management, no taunting, etc – bosses just wander around swinging at whoever they seem to feel like, spamming AOE and cleaves to make up for how easily everyone can avoid taking damage.

MH has a steep learning curve and awful controls, but personally, the combat there is vastly more rewarding.

Also, “clusterkitten” is excellent.

Thank you for your reply. I was wondering if anyone will read such a long post.

Thank you for your agrees and disagrees (everyone should have their own taste). I love MH combat system. I also understand how people like the casualness of GW2. It’s just my preference is a little bit different. I dislike the leveling, but not demanding it to change. I am a programmer myself. I know my suggestion will never be implemented in the game. I am just saying.

I am collecting dungeon armors recently and that is what I observed. I can hardly find a team that can bear with me reading the story. I happened to ran AC with a clueless team yesterday. I had soooo much fun with them figuring out things and solving puzzles. When I run AC with the speed run team, what I get is, “stand here”, “stack here”, “wait here”, “go there”, “come here”, “nuke it”, and etc.. Sometimes they don’t even talk. I agree it is very effective, but it is sooo boring.

Yes it is annoying when dungeon groups do that hence why I only dungeon with my guild unless I am desp for tokens (extremely rare). Speed running dungeons in any MMO I find annoying, but GW particularly lacks basic mechanics to prevent it and as such, the culture you decribe applies.

As for MH. I tried. 2, 3 and 4. I really tried. Each time myself and my friend convinced ourselves there must be something about it to make it so popular. But the controls, just so hideous. Just utterly unsuited in every possible way to the game it was tied to. Each to their own though, I long since realised it just isn’t aimed at me and decided to leave it to those who appreciate it, Here in GW2, the ease of play is a breath of fresh air after a long day at work.

I have GW1 and TSW and some other games if I want a more challenging system to play. I think it’s refreshing GW2 has taken the approach that it has. And I don’t think they are yet anywhere near done unlocking its potential either.

Yeah, this is all pretty fair.

I agree with a good chunk of this albeit for different reasons. And I note you said"First" level 80 so it seems you like this game enough to consider a second.

Just judging by some of your like/dislike points, it sounds to me like you’d really enjoy Aion, if you’ve never played it. And you’d specifically like it for some of the reasons why I LEFT it for Gw2.

The endgame of Aion is focused on faction warfare, scheduled raids on player controlled forts that are actually pretty similar to GW2’s WvW battles. Controlling forts actually gave you control of endgame area maps, access to dungeons and resources and things like that. There’s a ranking system where the top players get military commander ranks which literally give you special access to gear and powers that make you more powerful than other individual players. So you’d have those infamous “unbeatable players” that you actually would need crazy amounts of power or even a full party to take down; and taking down an enemy commander actually means something.

Personally, I couldn’t stand how it was both PvP centric, and incredibly unbalanced across gear, classes and ranks. Those gear differences just sucked all the fun out of combat for me, though it was partially a result of the fact that my main in that game was a bard, which is an insane glass cannon. Most of their spells are chain attacks with less than 1 second cast times, so it was pretty much like if you took a Gw2 Elementailst, halved their base health, yet gave them a base healing power of 4000, Quintupled their damage and made it possible to faceroll though all the attack skills on all 4 attunements in about 15 seconds. Which was fun to do in PvE, but it means all my PvP fights ended in one of two ways: Either I killed them in roughly 10 seconds, or I literally would do exactly zero damage because their gear was pure magic resist and I completely lacked any sort of non-magical physical attack. The latter happened surprisingly often.

I LIKE that the gear in Gw2 is leveled off such that every player is a threat who can at least get some hits in on you even if you’re better geared and more skilled than them, and vice versa. If you like being able to dominate people who have no possible hope of beating you, then that will never quite happen in gw2, but on the flipside it’s nice to know that even when someone is kicking my butt I can still make them work for it. It makes the PvP elements actually feel worthwhile to me.

Horrid control? MH is very successful in my culture. Almost every gamers I know love MH and those who didn’t get to play it drool about it. No one has ever said that before. I thought MH is a global example of how an action game should be made. Looks like I am in a very different culture. Let me take my note and write this down.

But yeah, the combat in MH is very rewarding.

I have GW1 and TSW and some other games if I want a more challenging system to play. I think it’s refreshing GW2 has taken the approach that it has. And I don’t think they are yet anywhere near done unlocking its potential either.

Yeah, that is really annoying. I wish there are more new players.

Huh, another comment from someone that don’t like MH. That really surprised me.

No game is loved by everyone. Every game has players who hate it. Most players fall somewhere in the middle of love it and hate it.

Yeah, this is all pretty fair.

I agree with a good chunk of this albeit for different reasons. And I note you said"First" level 80 so it seems you like this game enough to consider a second.

What? Second? I am going to play all 9 professions. I am farming gold now to buy LW season 2. The next thing will be character slots.

Just judging by some of your like/dislike points, it sounds to me like you’d really enjoy Aion, if you’ve never played it. And you’d specifically like it for some of the reasons why I LEFT it for Gw2.

Aion? Hey sir, please refer to R…2… Oh, wait. You are only referring to the endgame content. I am sorry. I got these “Leave GW2 and go play xx” replies too often.

Yes, the end game content you described in Aion is a 10/10 content for me.

Controlling forts actually gave you control of endgame area maps, access to dungeons and resources and things like that.

+1

There’s a ranking system where the top players get military commander ranks which literally give you special access to gear and powers that make you more powerful than other individual players.

+1

So you’d have those infamous “unbeatable players” that you actually would need crazy amounts of power or even a full party to take down; and taking down an enemy commander actually means something.

+10

Personally, I couldn’t stand how it was both PvP centric, and incredibly unbalanced across gear, classes and ranks.

Uh uh. No unbalanced classes please. I hate that.

Depending on how players get those unbalanced gears and ranks. If they can buy it. Uh uh, I hate p2w game. If they have to grind it very very hard. I would like it, they deserved the prestige power.

When I mean I like to have OP players in the game, I don’t mean I want to be the OP player (I don’t mind though). I like them to be there so that there are heroes for me to join or there are villains for me beat. As a weak player, I can join alliances with friends and guilds to beat the shxx out of that OP player. It is just like raid dungeon, only the boss is a player this time. I think it is fun.

Yeah, I didn’t mean that in a “Leave GW2” way I meant it in a genuine, “This other thing might interest you as well” kind of way. I do believe it’s possible to play more than one game. (Especially in the case of Gw2 since it’s a much smaller minimum time investment to be competitive)

As for the unbalanced classes, I will add that Aion is not meant for soloing at all outside the story, you’re meant to PvP in groups, even roaming. It’s a trinity game, so in 1v1 the trinity is mostly a Rock-Paper-Scissors with the classes, generally mages>heavies>clerics>mages but then there are some hybrid classes that flip things around, like the Aethertechs which pilot magitech mechas and function as magic-based tanks.

Most PvP content is 3v3 or 6v6 and army battles are army battles, so it smooths out a bit more. You WILL get ganked soloing though. It’s really the gear imbalance that bothers me the most to be honest.

You can’t directly P2W the military ranking system, the only way to top that is to no-life the game, but cash does honestly give you an advantage since you can buy things like better mounts, and if you can throw enough cash at the game you can buy all the enchantment stones and junk for maxing your gear instead of grinding it out. (To be fair, you can technically do the same in GW2 by flat-out buying a legendary with the gem-to-gold exchange, but a legend doesn’t give you nearly the advantage of a +15 endgame weapon with fully slotted manastones in Aion)

Different regions have different publishers with different cash shops. NA is managed by the same publisher as Gw2 so you should kinda know what to expect there for monetization schemes. In EU is Aeria and they’re much more money-grubbing.

You still might wanna look into it, but since you’d just be interested in the endgame, I should warn you it’s Korean-made, so Asia-tier grinding means it’ll take you waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay longer to get to said endgame content.

But yeah, I’m not gonna tell you to leave GW2 after you said this:

I am collecting dungeon armors recently and that is what I observed. I can hardly find a team that can bear with me reading the story. I happened to ran AC with a clueless team yesterday. I had soooo much fun with them figuring out things and solving puzzles. When I run AC with the speed run team, what I get is, “stand here”, “stack here”, “wait here”, “go there”, “come here”, “nuke it”, and etc.. Sometimes they don’t even talk. I agree it is very effective, but it is sooo boring.

Dungeons are so much more fun with people that are willing to banter a bit and aren’t in such a big kitten hurry. Granted, I can totally sympathize with wanting a quick reward for those that have been playing since launch and have done the dungeon to death, but I’ve only been playing for less than a year so they haven’t lost their luster for me yet. So I could definitely use more players with that attitude around for dungeon-running groups. Feel free to look-me up in game if you’re looking for people to run dungeons with.

Well leveling is a double edge sword. Or more specifically the auto-downleveling. The idea is that you can still participate in all game content and play with friends who may have much lower level characters. I think that those are worthwhile things.

That said it also means you don’t ever have to leave the starter zone if you don’t want to. In other MMOs you are pushed along because everything stops giving you XP and rewards. But here why leave if, assuming you are upgrading your gear as you level, you become a tiny one to two shot Godling. Use to take you four or five hits to take down one critter? Now watch as you plow through a whole group without breaking a sweat. Feels great, why go someplace where it’s four or five hits again?

We are heroes. This is what we do!

Lol, I am just kidding, but no, I don’t play more than one game. I will spend 100% of my game time to one game. Probably after I got bored of GW2, which I suspect it won’t happen for the next few years.

I am collecting dungeon armors recently and that is what I observed. I can hardly find a team that can bear with me reading the story. I happened to ran AC with a clueless team yesterday. I understand those who had run it for so many times that they want to clear it as soon as possible. I don’t blame them. I am blaming the community not being diverse enough to have equal number of new players to run slowly with me.

That said. I just finish running CM path 1 in an hour with a completely clueless team. No one in the team has done it before. We searched, we explored, we died, we fought, and we won. We did spend a lot of time, very laughable time for dungeon quick run players. But hey, instead of clearing it quickly without knowing what happened, I had fun. We had fun. That was my best dungeon run ever.

I must be honest and say that I didn’t read the whole post… I read first section and some of the other sections. Umm Anyway I want to say that it was a well written post. You must have put down alot of time not only to write it but to figure out all the goods and bads.

I mean I also realy love this game and I very often defend it when people are bashing it with stuff I don’t agree with. I do agree with you on most points I read but I will comment on a few.

WvW – Only a few weeks ago I realized that WvW requires no skill and no brains, just to be the biggest server with the biggest blobb. I am pretty bored with WvW and I would want something to “force” players to roam in smaller groups more. Big Zergs are cool and all but I would like a way that makes battles more about player skills and not just numbers… I realy hope the new WvW map will make me enjoy it more.

World Bosses Dislike – I so agree with this one and I just point it out as this is actually something I would love for Anet to do something about. I don’t get it for example why the little Pirate girl got to be a world boss but not the Fire Shaman? But that is just a small point. Every World Boss has to have their safe spots removed, and they should have alternative faces like Claw of Jormag and Fire Shaman. It wouldn’t have been bad if like Shadow Behemoth had some (Like two) Undestructable portals that spawned monsters wich a few groups of players had to take care of so that the group fighting Shadow Behemoth don’t get overwhelmed by them. Just an example.

Power step/Level scale Dislike – I disagree here as I feel way to strong when I am playing on low level maps. I am usually helping my new friends and new members in my guild when they explore the world and levels up but I am feeling to strong, sometimes I kill enemies with one hit. So I usually have to equip a non Power gear or a low level gear so I don’t take all the fun out from my fellow adventurers. The progress I feel isn’t comming from leveling it is comming from myself learning how to play my character and I feel how I myself is getting better at playing my character.

Age of the game – I don’t realy get what you mean here? As I look for players now and then I always find new players with 1-100 AP. Ofcourse not everyone is on just the exact spot as I am but there are alot of new players running around the map. I actually see new players everywhere when I run around exploring with my friends but there are ofcourse some maps that are less played I notice. I guess it all depends on how many players is many in our own eyes, but I think that if you try to look for someone to play with you will find them. Can’t expect a random player to just follow you around :P

Well it shouldn’t have to be that. And that wasn’t the only point I was making.

Edit: Also whenever did I state that you just play 1111? I don’t think I said anything like that. All statements I made was about making Zerg contents more interesting by angaging players more than just zerg by zerging. I don’t want 11111 playstyle anywhere and that is why I want content to be more varied than just standing on safe spots at worldbosses or having the biggest numbers in WvW. Also some servers are way to overwhelmed in WvW so even a well orgenized guild can’t do much about it, it’s not only about winning against a zerg it’s also about keeping the keeps and towers and be able to defend them and not only play the Marrygoround.

I like how some other games handle action combat a bit better. There are a few things about MH that I just can’t stand. I hate consumables. I don’t find them worthwhile to gameplay. I don’t like wasting resources on them and I don’t like wasting time to gather for them or make them. MH is pretty consumable heavy. I also think MH movement is a bit too deliberate and slow. As ridiculous as some of the weapons are, it tries too hard to be realistic. It’s why I like TERA and Dragon Nest combat better. It’s faster and gives more freedom of movement.

That said, I appreciate what MH stands for and how it has inspired other games, but I like the games that are iterations on MH, not MH itself.

With all respect to the thread opener, this is the third thread you opened about your opinion to some gw2 leveling/gameplay mechanics in less then 10 days…

You got already over 100 posts that most of these things you ‘dislike’ in gw2 are a core element and loved by most other gw2 players and that some of your ‘likes’ are different after you played a while or hasn’t been experienced the same as you have.

I really want to ask you kindly what you expect from this 3rd thread what isn’t already answered in your other to threads:

Thanks for at least reading part of it (I know it’s long, I know).

Yes, I did put down a lot of time, especially when English is not my native language. But no, I did not figure out all the good and bad. They are not good and bad, they are only what I like and what I dislike. Something I dislike might be good for the majority.

Not doing WvW a lot yet, but I agree on what you say. WvW definitely needs some new mechanism to enforce new gameplay style. It looks like they are now doing it in HoT. I really look forward to it.

World Bosses Dislike – I so agree with this one and I just point it out as this is actually something I would love for Anet to do something about. I don’t get it for example why the little Pirate girl got to be a world boss but not the Fire Shaman? But that is just a small point. True. I really like World bosses like Claw of Jormag, Tequatl the Sunless, and Shadow Behemoth (it’s weird that Shadow Behemoth looks so cool, but it is one of the weakest world boss). I would like to see more world bosses that have the outlook that correspond with their power.

Power step/Level scale Dislike – I disagree here as I feel way to strong when I am playing on low level maps. I am usually helping my new friends and new members in my guild when they explore the world and levels up but I am feeling to strong, sometimes I kill enemies with one hit. One hit???? I haven’t kill any enemy with one hit yet.

I agree with all your points, and that’s why they are under my love/hate section.

I mean the number of old players and new players is not balance. There are so many old players relative to new players. I am not blaming anything here, just the age of the game. This is a common phenomenon in games that are few years old.

Yeah, that is really annoying. I wish there are more new players.

Huh, another comment from someone that don’t like MH. That really surprised me.

No game is loved by everyone. Every game has players who hate it. Most players fall somewhere in the middle of love it and hate it.

And people read your long *post because you took the time to section it out. It wasn’t a huge wall of text.

I understand that, but MH is one exception. I have yet to hear any bad reviews about MH, until today. Anyway, I respect others’ opinion and that’s why I started this post, to see what others think.

I personally hate huge wall of text, so I did that. I want my readers to read them easily too.

Consumable? I don’t remember using any consumables in MH. I love grinding materials to make new gears in MH. I like Tera and Dragon Nest combat too.

I really want to ask you kindly what you expect from this 3rd thread what isn’t already answered in your other to threads:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/GW2-leveling-is-way-too-fast/first
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/Why-is-Anet-so-protective-1/first

With all the respect to my replier, if you don’t see the difference between these three posts, let me explain it to you. My first two posts are questions and a little bit of my opinions. Most of them are things I dislike and I am wondering why is the culture here so different to what I used to see. So, I started that two posts to see why others like things I dislike. I got my answers and I am satisfy. In my two previous posts, I didn’t mention anything I like (well, obviously, I don’t have questions on things I like).

This post has no questions at all. It is purely my opinions about the game after I got my first level 80 character.

I love Monster Hunter. But Monster Hunter is not the pinnacle of action combat. It’s a HUNTING game, and it’s very much geared more toward that than combat. While I would love a seriously well-made Monster Hunter MMORPG, that combat style does NOT fit with an MMO like GW2 (or any others currently on the market, really).

You seems to have some interesting opinions, but then, everyone is a bit different. Also, if you don’t remember using any consumables in MH, then I don’t understand what you did in MH or how far you actually got.

Back to GW2 though, what do you WANT levels to be? I much prefer GW2’s system myself. Combined with the dodge system, I can go and take on stronger mobs/higher level maps if I want. Or I can go back to lower level maps and still be super strong to the point I likely won’t die but not SO strong that it is boring. This is the only difference I see between GW2 levels and other games (in general, there are obviously differences in each game in terms of stat gain and such).

Might I suggest Dark Souls (or well, 2. 1 feels very dated nowadays, imo)? It seems like it could be your taste. I’ve also heard it’s similar to Monster Hunter but I haven’t played that yet so I don’t know for sure.

As for your post, I agree/disagree with a lot of it, and it was an interesting read how your opinions formed as you were leveling.

Also, as they’ve said, the “unlock skills as you use them” was the way it used to work, and honestly I don’t understand why they got rid of it… I loved that system, even if it was a bit grindy.

I hope you enjoy the “endgame” of GW2 and keep enjoying this game

Monster Hunter Frontier GG.

Yeah, everyone is different. I am writing this post to ask people agree with me.

I didn’t play MH in English and I don’t speak English back then. Now I understand what you guys mean by consumable. I only use consumables provide by the mission, except grinding stone, which I buy it directly from the vendor. I finished MHP, MHP2, MHP2G, and MHP3.

You can fight higher level mobs? I would like to do that in GW2 because that’s what I do in Tera and I love this play style. I can kill mobs that can kill me in one hit, as long as I don’t get hit at all. I can’t find that type of combat in GW2. I always get hit in GW2. The dodge in GW2 is use to dodge big attacks, not all attack. Dodge in Tera and MH can dodge every single hit.

I can’t do that in GW2 for most of the mobs. As an ele, I can only take 2-3 hits from higher level mobs, and I only have 2-3 times dodges throughout the fight. So, I have to kill the mobs before it launches attack for 4-6 times, which I can’t. I can only do it with the mobs that move very slowly (given that there are no other mobs nearby when I am kitting it, which rarely happens) or have pre animation attack (that big risen that will rush towards you, can’t remember the name).

ele’s are actually one of the better solo classes, if you’re experienced at the game. (FYI, lupicus is one of the hardest dungeon bosses in the game. even teams of 5 wipe on him quite often.)

You can solo nearly any of the content in the game if you’re skilled enough, honestly.

(of course this is a level 80 solo-ing a level 80 boss (designed for 5 people though). but it applies to all aspects of the game. as long as you’re skilled enough, you can fight enemies much stronger than you, e.g. this content designed for level 80’s being done by a level 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hb_ezeb778g )

Don’t you need to collect stuff for recipes for the food at the city? Still, MH is VERY clunky how it handles consumables and having to cycle through your inventory mid combat to find what you need is silly. I guess I just got burnt out on consumables as an idea and a mechanic from early World of Warcraft days. You have to have flasks (expensive as sin), potions (for use in every important fight, in Vanilla there wasn’t a limit to one per fight so you just had to wait 2 mins before tossing down another), food buffs, reputation/world buffs (felwood plants) and anything else they could come up with like items to use for combat buffs. I would rather focus on my character than what my character is eating or drinking mid combat.

I disagree with your view of sPvP, it is not just skill, you need the right traits, sigils and runes and neck item. in sPvP. there is just a lot more to it than skill alone, even if skill is a big factor.

As a weak player, I can join alliances with friends and guilds to beat the shxx out of that OP player. It is just like raid dungeon, only the boss is a player this time. I think it is fun.

Well, let me tell you how that works.

The alliance of valiant heroes attempt to take down the mean lone wolf. They perhaps succeed. It turns out that wolves come in packs so the overpowered player contacts their overpowered friends and together they camp the valiant heroes for the next few weeks.

Most of the time the alliance doesn’t even have a chance to form and rise up against the big bad because the overpowered players spend most of their time massacring lowbies who then either quit out of sheer frustration or join the gankers. What else would those pixel gods do? They’ve beaten probably everything the game has to offer, that’s why they’re so overpowered to begin with.

The first video you shared actually satisfies both my conditions for soloing. I love this type of fight (I have only met a few bosses that do this).

The second video you shared is the one I am bad in.

Food? Not sure what you are talking about. Anyway, I only collected materials for my gears. That’s it, I didn’t grind for anything else.

Cycling through the inventory is the part that tests your skills. Two things, you are either calm enough in battle to cycle through it or you just can’t put too many stuffs in your bag (I normally use only sharpening stone, so I don’t even need to switch).

Flasks? I googled “Monster Hunter Flask” and I get only the flasks with Monster Hunter design. Again, I don’t understand. I am sorry.

Potions??? The one that recovery your HP? If you are using potions, you are doing it very wrong. One hit from the boss = mission fail for me. I don’t take hit. I dodge every single attack.

Combat buffs? I never used any consumable combat buffs.

Yes, you should focus on your character, not what you consume during fights. Ideally, you don’t even need to consume anything, except sharping stone.
