I was unable to find a group for a dungeon: no time
It seems like this is the new direction for dungeons. The way the new dungeon “FotM” works, there is a big dis-incentive to invite lower dungeon level people into your/their groups.
1. As they will get worst loot.
2. Will not progress.
3. Need to teach you how the fractuals works.
4. Slows them down.
If you are not able to grind often, I strongly suggest finding a group of people to party with together at your own time and own target. Hard I know, but helps alot.
You are not in the demographic this game is aiming for now. So yes, to your question.
So this game went from something that that anyone could level up in, to Wow where you have to play 24.7 and gear checks to know if you are allowed into a group..
Amazing..
Sure Anet will have someway for people to buy gems to gain fotm levels in a month (right before x-mas) to boost sales
but still… congratulations to your daughter.
and join Yak’s Bend, plenty of people looking for 1, 2, 3 level difficulty. Look at the picture I shared.
http://blacktalons.guildlaunch.com/
Again, I’ll use a Nexon game as an example since I’m starting to see Nexon’s influence in GW2 after Nexon buyingt 15% of NCSoft and is now one of the major shareholders.
In Nexon games (Vindictus), there will be 3 types of players:
1) Hardcore grinders who will play 8+ hours to grind gear/money.
2) Casuals who will be required to buy from cash shop to gear their players and enjoy the game. GW2 initially (before the recent updates) allowed casuals to have fun and enjoy the content without having to spend enormous amount of money. Nexon tends to focus on this group to make money. If you’re a casual, and you want to compete with the hardcore grinders in pvp or enjoy the content (not getting 1 shot by bosses), you will need to empty your pockets.
3) Botters who just bot for gold to get all the gear they need.
I see the “normal players” in GW2 fitting in category 2. So, if this is the direction GW2 is heading, then I foresee this group of players having to spend a lot on cash shop (buying gems to trade for gold) to be able to enjoy GW2.

To OP: I’m simply going to work on leveling alts and avoiding the whole end-game gear grind altogether.
I would have expected to be playing this game for years, but it looks like it will just be a few months.
ANet has always focused too much on having a single character, without considering people may want to 100% outfit their alts, too. It was a minor problem in GW1, especially with title grinds, since many just don’t count towards one another.
The game is kind of divided now into two groups: casuals and locusts. Casuals likely are still trying to get a single character to level 80. So who cares about them? They’ll never even think about trying to get Ascendent armor, much less be concerned about grinding it.
Locusts will just keep eating new tier advancements and then threatening to leave once they’re done, until ANet adds another color to the dumbace rainbow. Then they’ll just do it again. Casuals won’t really hit a wall until a year or so from now.
@OP
It certainly feels that way.
I had a pretty busy weekend myself, so wasn’t able to log on much. I feel so behind everyone else now that I almost feel like ‘well what’s the point?’.
To top it off, you know that big one time event they’ve been going on and on about? Yeah that ran at 3-6am my time on a Monday morning no less. Cheers ANet, it’s really great logging into the forum and hearing about all the legendary precursors, exotics, rares and 20 slot bags I missed out on!
I’m so disillusioned I’m honestly tossing up asking for a refund, not for the money, but to show my disgust at some of their decisions. I bought this game because I was told it was going to be different. I’m ashamed I fell for that old chestnut.
I’ll tell you what though, long time ANet fan here, but not anymore.
I’ve yet to start running the new Fractals, but I’m not too concerned because I know my guild will help me out. If you don’t have access to a guild, you could always try to start your own lower difficulty group.
Also, as people start to hit a (skill/gear) wall at higher difficulties, they may be more willing to take on people who haven’t progressed as far, as they would get an easier run from doing this.

All these people with lives should get together. With the amount of complaints about this you guys could form a whole guild together.

Whilst this certainly would be nice, I wouldn’t count my chickens before they hatch. Here are the implications on helping a lower scale player:
If they are already at 11+ difficulty, the first run of the day will award them with a chance to get Ascended rings. This opportunity however, will be squandered if they did a lower difficulty fractal; they’d simply get a reward which includes no chance of getting Ascended rings.
Players that help you out will be unable to progress their own difficulty, which in turn, means that other players may need to help them out in future, to stick to the progression that everyone else is at.
“it doesn’t make you spend hours preparing to have fun, rather than having fun”
Guild missions say otherwise.

Sadly they are all on different servers with no guesting feature and the fractals cannot be joined from multiple servers like the other dungeons.
So no. Get to grinding or GTFO
Stat increase = gear grind.
Gear grind = no money from me ever again.
Sadly, if you can’t grind often, this game isn’t for you.
Things are brand new, I suspect that with time it will level out. At first there is always a crowd who want to get everything done and maxed out as quickly as possible. A lot of the casual players, like myself, haven’t even looked at the Fractals dungeon yet; it’ll still be here after the Lost Shores event, and I’ll have plenty of time to assemble some friends to give it a go.
So no, I don’t think ArenaNet have screwed over casual players or those who have other things on in their lives. You might not always be able to do exactly what you’d like it at all times (if what you want to do requires other people to co-operate) but you’ll be able to at some point.
They are trying to keep that 2% of gamers happy that grind and do have hours to spend each day playing but your casual gamer is suffering. It’s not only new content but I see the same bias happening in normal dungeons. Try to get a group for story mode sometime ( You’re a level 80 and have not done this dungeon ? Sorry no noobs in my group ). It isn’t just this update it’s happening through out the entire game.
I still refuse to play in PUGS and if that means I can’t play certain areas so be it and if it gets to the point I’m missing out on too much I’ll simply stop playing. What they need to do is modify dungeons so smaller groups can get them done or at least allow a group of only 2 -3 players to do them. Sadly the type of player that’s rising to the attention of Anet and unfortunately the loudest on these forums isn’t the type of person I want to spend my gaming time with.
Story Mode should be something a single player can do and not a group of people. If they want to cater to P vs P and Hard Core gamers great just stop killing the casual gamer in the process as well. I have no intention of doing dungeons save for the story and game lore that’s involved and if the massive group events is what I have to look forward to, there isn’t much to look forward to. I’m not the only one who feels this way either I would expect.

I’m game. If someone wants to start a non-grind guild…a guild not focused on the end-game gear grind, let me know.
I have no problem jumping servers.
you are not missing anything bud. Trust me when i type this out that anet will eventualy make the new gear be sold at vendors once the 3rd new teir comes out. Just like any other mmo does.
You’re spinning your wheels over nothing.

With the way it’s implemented now I wouldn’t count on that too much unless you’re willing to be on a lot. The ideas of levels is well designed with the exception of locking to the LOWEST member in the party. If your guild has been at it all day and you get on they will have to spend an extra 2 hours per level running content they’ve been through in order to get you up to speed.
Luckily there is a quick fix for them if this if it becomes a real issue:
“Patch note XXX: FOTM now sets the level being entered to the level highest in the group.”
Sadly, if you can’t grind often, this game isn’t for you.
They should have told me that before i bought it, not lying to us. There are other game with are better if grinding is all you do.
Believe me, i would, but i’m in Serbia XD
When they described this system I thought that something like this would happen, but I am surprised it’s happening so quickly.

Yes, that ’s what is called a gear grind; which so many players dislike and site as their biggest concern at this point.

Wait, people actually play Vindictus for the PvP? I are confus
I actually prefer Vindictus at the moment and have played that game since release in the U.S. (with periodic breaks for a couple months here and there); if you have half a brain you can easily get all you need in game for less than it costs to purchase Gw2 (I won’t go into further details since that is not what this thread is about; discussion may continue on their forums…).
OT:
The designers are really lacking in imagination, creativity, and skill if they are resorting to such a primitive gear treadmill.
There are a trillion and one other designs that they could have used that would have been viable and many that are infinitely better.
These one times events could be handled better and in infinitely better ways too.
Apparently you aren’t dedicated enough. Lyndsey’s words, not mine.
Sadly, if you can’t grind often, this game isn’t for you.

I encourage you to get a refund. It is very easy to get one on the grounds that the game is not what was advertised at the time of purchase.
u are a big hater i can see it from your sign too..
btw i dont think there is nothing to complain here, it is still full of ppl needing the first lvls of fractals and this is just a normal progressing line NOT dependant from gear, just the lvl where u arrived.
it’s just more difficult now to find party cause it’s a new thing. but it is harder if u lvl up in difficulty (way harder).
about the “i cant see al content” i cant understand this statement.. i mean u can see the same fractals at lvl 1 or lvl 20, it is just a change in difficulty. do u want a game where good players or players that have more time cannot progress further or have nothing to do?

This.
I could not log in at the exact time for this one time event and now I missed all the exotic stuff. Sadly, players who have their lives are obviously not important for Anet any more.

having more time to grind doesn’t make anyone good. Yes, I don’t really care if they lack the imagination to find things to do beyond exotics.

But can you see content on lower lvl maps now? It’s not the same like in 1st month and it never will, new players will not join this game, why whould they? if everyone is doing same dungeons they can just play some pure F2P grind MMO
What an awful, offensive topic and title.
“Normal” players? As in, everyone who isn’t like me is one of those evil Others that should get out of MY community?
Gamers might play computer games more than you personally like, but that doesn’t mean they are any more aberrant or mal-adjusted than someone who plays a lot of golf, or watches a lot of television.
I think the hostility that arises from this casual/hardcore divide is poisonous to any community. Casual players should be welcome to come and go as they please without being criticised as lacking in either commitment or skill just because they don’t play quite as much. More invested “hardcore” players should not be criticised for enjoying the activity that we’re all here for, or for having no ‘real’ lives.
@ Roven Leafsong Could you be reading too much into the use of normal. I am sure the OP does not mean it in an offensive way.
But I agree with you, casual and hardcore players should be able to enjoy the game in their own ways. I thought the horizontal gear concept would have helped in that.
Vertical progression to me is a sure way to segregate the community, between casual and hard core players.
Gating although bad, could be a good way to ensure players pay their dues to access super super hard content. If implemented properly in a forgiving manner (currently implementation is not the best). That is, if there is only super minor difference in gear stats (maybe only 1%) between exotic and ascended. Currently there is a HUGE difference.
(edited by gadenp.7586)
If you have kids i would hope you always chose being with your kids over a game any game even the not truly existing short games that you do not have to be good at (spending time getting good etc… in its own way a grind).
That is the truth of it most pvp games have a grind its not an item one its a skill one if you do not put in the time you will not get good. As for other mmorpg mainly the action ones you got to at least put some time into getting good with rolls and blocking and the non action are all gear / info base its own grid. I am not saying once you have kids you can never game agen just if your at the point of making a chose you may need to put gaming down for a bit.

well the hard core elite brought this on by demanding grinds and by dismissing concerns.,
Also, be happy, for the moment the various party just looking to move forward into the dungeon difficulty, wait for the moment where ascended crap are going to be mendatory in each party search.
When its going to be the case, you will be definitely screwed.
And more than screwed since ascended crap will ask you a LOT of farm ( way mooore boring farm than the exotic stuff one ) and Anet, as “smart” dev will use the ascended stuff as cornerstone for all kind of new content.
Its nice isnt it ? /sarcasm.

Legen – Wait for It – dary joke
I find it rather funny that people whine and moan about hitting 80 and not having anything to do, no gear progression, no progressive dungeons, etc. So ArenaNet decides to add ONE DUNGEON for these people that wanted to pursue that, and now people piss and moan that they added content for a group of people that were lacking that content. What’s even funnier is the fact that the people complaining act like the other 99% of the game no longer exists because of one dungeon.
Get over it people. It’s one dungeon. There are plenty of groups you can get into to do it without being on dungeon level 7+. Tons. I stand in Lion’s arch for 10 minutes and I see 20+ calls for LFG Level 1-3.
Lastly, you act like there won’t be other methods for acquiring Ascended gear. If I know ArenaNet, there is never just ‘one way’ to accomplish goals in GW2. While FotM might be the only way to get Ascended gear currently, I have faith that it will be expanded upon and new methods will be introduced as time progresses. For example, mystic forge, random chests, events, renown, etc.
The dungeon literally JUST came out. Stop having a panic attack and give things time to settle before you start screaming the sky is falling.
Oh, and btw? Did you check stats on Ascended gear? It’s not that big of a gap to complain about. +2 over the stats of an 80 exotic? Not to mention that infusion ONLY effects Agony, so it’s not like it’s some super powerful godly item with ultimate usefulness UNLESS you are fighting against enemies that cause agony.

It is reset weekly.
Plenty of groups are for 1-3.
You are being dishonest or ignorant.
@ Sondergaard
Mostly, the people that QQ, whine and moan about nothing to do.
And the people that are intelligently pointing out the issues now about the issues on vertical grind and gating are 2 different set of people.
I have 5 sets of exotic gear, that will now have to be replaced with new gear. People are already getting to the point of not wanting to do lvl 1 fractals already and asking for full exotic groups and no noobs. I was promised not to have a gear grind, which basically means I will not have to grind out zones every 6 months for new pants so my damage numbers are bigger.
I loved this game because if I was the right lvl and knew the zone I could do the run successfully. I will miss that and soon people will want to have gear scores and ways to check what my gear is what build I am. What happened to just having fun in instance’s, or players helping each out. What happened to just others helping others out in story modes. How about working on new weapons, skills, etc for players not just shiny new armor with stats on them. Introduce more gear for different looks by finding it, making it, exchanging for tokens that anyone can get. Not just the person who can complete a dungeon more then someone who has to work, go to school, take care of kids, etc.
Also any stat increase can give others an advantage over others in wvwvw. Its why it is so easy sometimes to beat other players in 1 vs 1 and other times it can a 5 minute fight.
But I agree with you, casual and hardcore players should be able to enjoy the game in their own ways. I thought the horizontal gear concept would have helped in that.
Vertical progression to me is a sure way to segregate the community, between casual and hard core players.
My bf is more of a hardcore gamer and I am the casual one. The horizontal gear concept was what made me want to play this game. It had both appeals for him and I to play the way we wanted. I could lag behind in levels and gear but still be able to play with him without too much fuss. Its hard to progress in a game when I feel like I am no longer the target audience.

I actually don’t think it’s the case that they’re trying to keep the 2% of the gamers happy. I think the patch is mainly to get players to spend more. This has Nexon influence written all over it..
The 2% which is the hardcore grinders usually do not buy items from cash shop. If they have time to grind 8+ hours a day, they tend to have tons of gold and can get whatever items they want.
The intent of this patch is to create a gear treadmill that requires lots of grinding. It forces the casuals who have the money but not the time to grind to spend a ton on the cash shop to get the items they want. Casuals who usually work are the ones who are most likely to be buying gems.
This direction goes in hand with how Nexon runs their games. Grind, low rate on item drops, RNG, cash shop related content, etc… Since Nexon purchased 15% of NCSoft and now is one of the major shareholders, I am not surprised that their influence has made it into GW2.
Correct me if I’m wrong, you can’t buy ascended gear as it requires a soulbound item. You can buy some of the parts but not all.
I’m dubious of the idea that this treadmill is designed to push you to buy gold with money. I think it is more of a poorly implemented dungeon with a progression element (the fractals themselves are great fun, the leveling mechanism combined with the lfg system has all the grace of a flying brick).
Normal player.. tons of hours..
I have a wife, kids and a job.. could not log in until tonight does to my daughter having her confirmation.. you know REAL life..
My 80 mesmer could not get a group for the new dungeon.. Everyone had to be level 7 or some odd crap to do it….
72 hours out of the loop and ZERO chance to get a group? This game talked about no grinding and you can’t take three days off at max level and not land a group now??
I completly agree with this. I hate the way its going. For instance I want to do CoE BUT NO ONE DOES IT since its to ‘hard’ and what’s awsome it when you find 3 people willing to do then can’t find the last 2.
ANET Please listen to us!!

I loved CoE, but atm path 2 or was it 3 has a issue with a mini boss not working correctly so it could take 20-40 minutes todo just him. So i think thats the reason why in over a week besides the new zone is open you cant find a group.

Why are you assuming that the people wanting gear progression are the same people that are whining about it ?
Get over it people. It’s one dungeon.
One dungeon that we are forced to do if we want the stats that only it provides. Before FOTM, we had multiple ways to get whichever max stat item we wanted.
Also, the biggest problem is that ANET lied to us with the manifesto.
Oh, and btw? Did you check stats on Ascended gear? It’s not that big of a gap to complain about. +2 over the stats of an 80 exotic?
How much of a difference will that be over the full set of Ascended gear that ANET has promised ?
Not to mention that infusion ONLY effects Agony,
You are wrong. Infusions come with stats other than agony resistance.
Actually, I have full 80 exotic gear. I’ve had it since the first 2 weeks of the game. That being said, I still don’t like the direction this game is going, and I do NOT like that FoTM is gated. I was happier with the game before this month, tbh. Now, I’m already looking for something new. Expected this one to be a keeper. Shame.
