It is actually quite true.
What has been said is something along the lines of:
We are not currently planning on adding a tier over Ascended (stat-wise) and we definitely won’t do it this year.
While it does leave out some information, it is not really incorrect either.

No additional tiers are currently planned after Ascended, and future progression will be based on continuing to introduce Ascended rarity items in other equipment categories as well as introducing new skills and raising the character level cap.
That would probably be more accurate, as we will get more vertical progression in the form of Ascended Armor soon, and can probably expect to eventually receive ascended infusions. Magenta quality runes and sigils are also an option for further vertical progression.
And of course, there’s level cap increase.

Wiki shouldn’t be based on what we “probably can expect” it should be based on actual fact. And the only actual fact we have is that there is no higher tier than Ascended planned at this time, and there is no fact about higher tiered runes and/or sigils.
There is however not a single confirmation that there WILL be a level cap increase. Only that they said that they MIGHT increase the level cap (this was also something that was said well before release of the game).

Fact: They are giving us more vertical progression with Ascended Armor. No need for “probably can expect”, that was just my editorial thrown in after.

I didn’t say any different in my revised quote. It doesn’t reference runes or sigils. That was in my comments afterwards. They are going to introduce more vertical progression with ascended gear in the near future in the form of armor.

You’re wrong.
Mike O’brien said, “…we’ve always expected that we will someday raise the level cap in GW2.” on a Reddit AMA after launch. In fact, it was after the introduction of the first Ascended gear.

Hi Erick,
The wiki is a collaborative site that we host but the Guild Wars 2 community updates. You can learn about this on this page from the wiki:
http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Guild_Wars_2_Wiki:How_to_help
It’s very easy to update the page by yourself. If you do it without an account, your IP address will be logged as your “account name”, but I’d advise creating an account, it takes less than a minute to do so. If you don’t do it, I’m sure one of the editors could update the page but (as lordkrall mentions) it’s unlikely that they will do it, at least without a solid quote and phrasing this update without ambiguity. The articles of the wiki always try to emphasize accuracy and the need to provide source/evidence for information.
It’s actually one of the cool and often overlooked part of the wikis, where players get to discuss updating articles. They usually follow some basic rules (called “policies” and players get to decide them in the first place, you can read more about that here) and sometimes get to create new ones whenever appropriate.
There’s a big community of wiki editors that’s super friendly and helpful. Some editors even get to become “administrators” (sysops and bureaucrats) to help manage the wiki itself. Contrarily to popular belief, the wiki relies on a fairly big group of players, most of them doing small and occasional updates to various articles. The wiki is the sum of these numerous small updates with a fewer number of editors doing more frequent and in-depth updates.
Hope this helps!

But saying they are giving us more vertical progression could suggest that they will give us another tier, but it is only a matter of wording I suppose. It is technically the same vertical progression that was added with the Lost Shores patch after all. It is just a bit more spread out than is normal.
Ah, my mistake on the timing. That does however not remove my point.
They don’t confirm that there will be a level increase, they say that expected to raise the level cap. Not that they WILL.
And we haven’t hear anything at all about a possible increase of level cap since that comment, so saying that it will come would be classified as false since it has never been confirmed.

That’s actually not true and you only need to read the AMA to know that. They said there that vertical progression would be in the game going forward. They have never reversed the commitment to VP. Additionally, they said then that they had no current plans for additional tiers and planned to carry VP forward through infusions. Further, they never said that there would never be additional tiers, just that none were currently planned.
So, OP is correct here. The statement is false as it has never been made by Anet. If Anet wants to make it I will cheer. But, in the meantime the wiki is misleading at best and it should be corrected.
But saying they are giving us more vertical progression could suggest that they will give us another tier, but it is only a matter of wording I suppose. I understand what you are saying, but there will be things added in the future that increase the power of characters beyond what is available now. Hence, new vertical progression. Yes, it’s still magenta in color. That’s the “no new tiers” part.
Ah, my mistake on the timing. That does however not remove my point.

Except you’ve got a double standard here.
They say they don’t expect to add a new tier, so it’s okay to include “no new tier planned” but they say they do expect to increase level cap at some point, but you’re quick to point out that the comment doesn’t mean “they WILL”.
So to be consistent, it should read something along the lines of “a level cap increase is planned for some point in the future”.
So how about:
No additional tiers are planned after Ascended. Future progression is planned on the release of other types of Ascended gear, new skills, and level cap increase.
But there still is no actual confirmation that there WILL be a level cap increase.
Other than that the statement would indeed work, but adding a future level cap increase as fact does seem quite incorrect simply due to the fact that they have yet to confirm that there will be an increase of level cap, only that they are (or at least were 10 months ago) expecting to do one.

@Gibson, you would have to add “infusions” to your list of progression methods as they actually referenced them in the AMA as a vehicle for VP. Also, the list includes elements of vertical and horizontal methods of progression. To be clear on the direction of game scaling, it would probably be best to mention this. As far as we know at this point, the game will be scaling vertically and horizontally. That is one direction too many for some of us.
It would actually be simpler to simply remove the statement referred to in the OP. It is false and it really doesn’t need to edited into something true—removal would do nicely.

Okay, so you’re going to stick to your double standard.
Based on the information we have, they are planning on not introducing a tier beyond ascended just like they are planning on increasing level cap at some point. You can’t accept one as any more “fact” than the other. Both are expectations they have expressed.
I’ve seen you dismiss a lot of things based on the fact they are old statements. What exactly is the statute of limitations on a developer statement? When do they expire? Shouldn’t we accept statements they’ve made as their intentions unless they’ve come out and said they changed, or it becomes obvious in game that they have?
@Raine, you’re right. The statement should probably be removed entirely, as future vertical progression is only tangentially related to information about Ascended Gear. There should probably just be a note that ANet has stated they expect Ascended to remain the most powerful tier of gear in the game for the foreseeable future, and that they will be adding Ascended Armor and Ascended Infusions to continue progression.
If you think it should be written differently, then edit it. It’s a wiki. That said, there is nothing wrong with the way it is. The wiki says there will be no tiers after ascended. This obviously doesn’t preclude Ascended Armor, as that would not be a tier after ascended.
Wiki shouldn’t be based on what we “probably can expect” it should be based on actual fact.
Fact: They are giving us more vertical progression with Ascended Armor. No need for “probably can expect”, that was just my editorial thrown in after.
Fact: ArenaNet has stated there are no plans to release tiers beyond Ascended.
They’ve already given vertical progression through Ascended items. Additional set pieces that were planned since the introduction of Ascended pieces neither adds nor takes away from this.
There are Footnotes attached to the wiki quote in question, so it is statement that has been based on Anet staff statements. This would lead me to assume that it is correct – that being said it is only correct at the present moment. There is nothing to say that they won’t change their minds/go in a different direction, but based on what we have been told thus far the statement is correct.

I guess I misunderstood the OP because I thought it was another player sarcastically expressing his issue with the gear treadmill, not a person asking for wiki advice. My mistake…

Yes, exactly. They will continue to provide vertical progression through more ascended items, infusions, and a level cap increase.

This point:
No additional tiers are planned after Ascended, and future progression will be based on earning newly introduced skills. This is not true or at least it’s misleading.
If I’m not wrong they intend to move vertical progression on through infusions to the existing tier of gear.
On the contrary, written like that, it seems that they intend to stop with vertical progression and move forward with horizontal progression (skills), something that I hope for, but that has never been confirmed.
That statement is true though, there are no additional tiers planned, and Anet has stated as such. Adding armor into the ascended Tier is not adding another tier. That statement is true and is far from being misleading.
The note referenced in the OP was:
“No additional tiers are planned after Ascended, and future progression will be based on earning newly introduced skills.”
Currently, the statement has been edited to:
“No additional tiers are planned after Ascended, but there are plans to enhance or gain items within the existing rarity design whose properties continue on a shallow power curve. Future progression will also be based on earning newly introduced skills.”
And, appropriate citations were given. The initial note was clearly inaccurate and misleading. I believe the edit now accurately reflects what we know from actual Anet statements on the subject. I thank the OP for bringing this to the communities attention.
Edit: @eisberg, the misleading part was indicating that in the future progression would be scaling only horizontally. That’s what the original note said. In actual fact, Anet said that we would have vertical progression in the game going forward on a low power curve. To the best of our knowledge from actual statements, the game will scale vertically and horizontally in the future.
(edited by Raine.1394)
As much I’m against VP, the article you linked to is solely about ascended gear, not stat progression overall. I agree that gear tiers have long since become synonymous with vertical progression, which is why we have to realize that anything with a non-absolute statistic tied to it has the potential to be used as additional steps on the treadmill. It’s not going to be treadmill for gear anymore, but a treadmill for stats. Unfortunately, there are no articles about character progression or progression in general on the wiki, where adding this information would be most appropriate to.
