Q:

I am well aware of one button press = one in game action so I gotta ask if programing a text macro is against the rules? Sometime it’s a pain to type out to your team mid combat and such, and you won’t always have team speak.

So if I did something like

Enter (to type) macro types then hits enter again (to say it in selected chat) that is one in game outcome no?

Enter /m In coming north*Enter*” (WvW)

Enter /t go mid*Enter*” (sPvP)

Enter /p COM @ ME BRO*Enter*” (PvE while running towards the boss)

Enter /p THIS IS NO WHIPE I WILL SIMPLY DO IT WITHOUT YOU!!! FOR GREAT JUSTIN!!!Enter” (When your party dies vs Alpha in CoE and your left to solo him. For the 6th god forsaken time that night -_-…)

Would that be against the one in game function and the game think I’m trying to cheat?

I don’t think Anet would consider this cheating. Chat itself doesn’t provide any technical benefits and it’s merely a communcation thing.

Typing a chat message isn’t an ‘in-game action’: the only ‘in-game action’ is when you hit Enter and the chat message is displayed to other players. So IMHO, a macro to make one of those messages appear would qualify as ‘one in-game action per keypress’.

In competitive gameplay like PvP and WvW chat macros give an advantage over people who have access to such programs, making them more desirable for the team / as a commander.

with the macro one could alert team members to enemy movements faster or direct people to certain areas quicker.

imo if you wanted to achieve an absolute level playing field they should not be allowed.

Should we ban the use of 3rd party programs like ts3/vent/mumble as well?

From a literal reading of the rules, using a macro to “shout” is a violation of the macro TOS as it violates the one button = one keystroke rule.

I will offer no predictions as to whether use of such a benign macro would result in a ban.

Any chance I can get a response from a dev?

The best you can hope for is a copy paste from the TOS. They will not comment on specific macros, programs, etc.
