Still wanting to push for a new playable race
As much as it’s accepted to hate on the idea of new races in GW2 (and when I say hate, I don’t mean it entirely maliciously),
How many people do you think hate the idea of new races? People are saying it’s not a realistic business decision on ANet’s part: huge expense, small benefit to the community.

I’d be really interested to know just how unrealistic a business decision it is. Would you pay USD $20 for the Tengu, the Domain of Winds, and the 1-30 personal story to go with it? I would, and that’s 1/3 of an expansion right there in price.
The biggest challenge, though, would be the armor sets and making sure they look tolerably good on the new race. Considering the state of ANet’s armor development speed (1 armor set every 9 months), they probably just don’t have the available resources to support a new race. This means, to me, that humanoid races may actually be more likely than bestial races (rip Tengu) simply because they’d be so close to what we already have in body structure.
I really wish I could be a fly on the wall for one of the meetings where they discussed this topic.
I keep reading people talking about the immense amount of work that would be. New zone, new personal story, new cultural armor. Yeah we’re aware of that. still many MMO’s inlcude new races in their updates. GW2 can handle it. nothing they haven’t done before. they just have to see if it’s worth it, depending on how much people actually want it.
I feel like playable Dwarves are coming for some reason.
221 hours over 1,581 days of bank space/hot pve/lion’s arch afk and some wvw.
I would have liked it if Anet made Kodans playable rather than Norns. Norns are just big humans.
Never going to happen. Anet is overworked by making armors with 5 races already, they should have sticked to 1 race and call it a day.

Nothing they haven’t done before? You mean like with the launch of Guild Wars 2? That’s the only time I can remember new playable races being offered. Then, maybe, the new race(s) will be offered with the launch of Guild Wars 3, if and when that should ever happen.

No, they’re not even retextures, they are just rezised versions of the same texture, this wouldn’t be a problem.

You did read the part in the parenthesis, right? When I say ‘hate’, I mean in the slang internet term which usually boils down to “I disagree to some degree” and disagreeing on the internet is pretty much the basis for any debate, even if you agree in part.
Some examples of ‘hate’ are those that say it’s unfeasible with the current game engine or that it’s not worth the effort because it’s not new content but cosmetics and they want “actual content”. Neither are seething with hate at the idea of adding new races but both disagree with new races being added.

yes, at launch. and they could even think of ways to lessen to work required. for example, Goblins and Worgen in WoW don’t have a capital city. (they do have a city in their story intro though) The could have a reason why Tengu don’t have a city, are exiled or something.
IF AND ONLY IF….we ever get to Elona in the future….. I would like to be an Elonian Centuar, seeing they are, or were at peace with Humans. Look at the late MMORPG Shadowbane. They had Centaurs as a playable race. I’m sure a lot of people dislike bipedals as playable races, and want something different. GW2 can be that game that breaks the ice.
If they put playable centaurs in I’d immediately make a centaur thief just for the pleasure of repeatedly doing the Death Blossom when attacking.
Legs everywhere!! lol.
ANet may give it to you.
Skritt obviously is the best option.

- New story = new writers, new assets, new NPCs, new start area, new home city
- New race = new voice actors, male & female, for English, German, Spanish, French, and Chinese… not just for the introduction, but for all future expansions and living stories.
- New armor sets = new physics, new animations, not just for the introduction but for all future armor sets, outfits, and weapons.
I don’t imagine that US$20 is enough to fund it and especially I find it hard to believe it would continue to be enough to pay the future developed cost increases due to the above.
More! Because so many more different characters! All I care about.
…I’m not actually going to buy anything but I’d look at screenshots and videos about character creation.
If a game has enough ressources to make stupid minigames, raids for a minority of people and can redesign 4 maps that were praised as the best invention since the wheel, there is also plenty of room for a new race.
Since the core game went F2P I have lost all hope of new playable races and just that the game is not doing as well as it did Pre HoT.

Yah. I look at those pictures and wonder how many would want the Largo “master race” if it didn’t have those wings.
And those wings…
Can you imagine trying to do a JP with Largos in the group? They’ll have the White or Black wings on top of the Largo wings of course or maybe the huge Spinal Backpack, making a truly ugly double winged char.
ANet may give it to you.

The double-winged waterdrow ranger: Largolas Sephiroth with a bear pet named Cloudstrife.
You put this in my head, Fleshy, and I can’t unsee it. ;_; I blame you.
There are much better options to consider. I still remember someone did a really boss mockup of the Skritt character creation screen.

Although i’d love to see a new race as well, the armor implications would be huge. Best example are the chaar which after all these years still have a lot of clipping issues and texture issues. On some armors/weapons u can literally see the pixels.
What i’m saying is getting a new race that has the same problems with gear skins would be overall disappointing. If it was another humanoid race then ofc that would be no problem.
Look for Tengu in the next expansion and Dominion of Wind Capital…
However let it be said I prefer Largos by far.

I’m ready for the WaterDrow Largo race release. I’m reserving the name Largolas Of Mirkwood. It’s too good a name to pass up. I’ll combine the Largos wings with the large, flashy PvP wings and head off to the nearest JP to stand on some tricky jump spot so people can will have time to admire my beautyaceousness.

Ooops. One character (letter) too many. =P

Darn.
Largolas O Mirkwood then. (Actually that’s better. Sounds even more classy)

I’m pretty sure anet has already thought about this and planned for it before even the release of the game. There are many things that are just lieing dormant in the gw2 game files. We will probably see the tengu as playable race when we finally get to enter the land of the wind or w/e its called on the other side of caledon.
Virual [VRUS] Alien Lunatics [StFu] Nocturnal Sxaddx [Nuts] Ft. Aspenwood
That which is dead may eternally lie, but with great aeons even death may die.
the forgotten
Faolain Ventari – Sylvari Elementalist
Faolain Kormir – Human Revenant
These were the playable races I had hoped for before the release of GW2 (and was highly disappointed when they picked the Charr of all races, ugh):
- Centaurs
- Tengu
- Dwarves (there must have been some clans who didn’t get transformed, no?)
Cmon. What’s so great about Largos?
1- The wings. -> Clipping and visibility issues. Overlaps with gemstore products.
2- The white hair. -> Already accessible for humans, boring after the first, and when everyone gets the same. (I don’t think they can put many more tones of white on the character creation to give some variety…)
3- The underwater. -> Which Anet have tried to ignore as much as possible. You’ll end playing an aquatic race in dry terrain 95% of the time. (Insert Aquaman jokes here?)
4- The solitary hunting culture. -> Yep, we should be able to accept a race of lone, antisocial, menacing, self sustaining, quiet assassins… stacking boons in zergs of 20 or more and dancing while waiting for Teq hour.
5- The mask. -> Which would work same as good in humans or any other race. Also they’ll have to design a face for them (destroying the mistery), or many people would complain. It will also create a ton of issues with all the other helm skins.
6- The armor. -> Again, not race defining, anyone could use it. In fact, Mistward one is fairly similar, IMO.
7- The ears… Oh, my…
My GOD! The ears! How come I didn’t notice it before! Those longish, pointed, pale elven ears are the true defining feature of the Largos master race! No other race could have such beautiful, fierce, expressive, imposing, TRASCENDENT EARS!
I’ll shut my mouth from now on. I’m sorry for all my sarcastic words, please forgive me. I now see the truth. I too, want, no, I NEED to have a character with such incredible ears.
that it makes every other class in the game boring to play.”

I don’t see it happening because of all the asset overhead (armors, cultural gear, race city) that needs to be done as well story elements like their personal story. Yes the Tengu, from my understanding, use the same animation rig as Charr. But it’s a lot of work for potentially little payoff, payoff is defined as new paying players. Taking the devs who would work on a new race and use them for a larger expansion would make better use their talents.
RIP City of Heroes
People which don’t like Largos probably don’t like pizza as well.
And a life without pizza is not a good life.

You have no idea how badly I want to play a Tengu. I have a profession in mind. I have a name ready. I have gear ready. I have level tomes ready.
I’m ready.
Obviously not in the near future any ideas for it to maybe be in a few years time?
In a few years time they will probably be working on GW3.
With the present races they have to create different armors for each race, which takes a lot of time. If they were to put in something like a playable tengu they would have to redesign all the armor to suit. They then have to create a new story line for them, which, of course, isn’t in the present game.
If there was some racial difference then there might be a point, but really, except for appearance and size they are all pretty much the same.
I keep reading people talking about the immense amount of work that would be. New zone, new personal story, new cultural armor. Yeah we’re aware of that. still many MMO’s inlcude new races in their updates. They shouldn’t and they can’t handle it because they already aren’t. The time is much better spent on polishing the current races who suffer from poor armor scaling and have no distinguishing animations still, improving animations, etc. We already have to wait several decades to get new armor skins and don’t even get them at their best quality for each race’s alteration requirements.

Dude you are so wrong…
They already can’t handle them? Really? Have you played other games with different races lately? They are nothing compared to gw2. Anet did a great job at handling the different races.. Could they do it better? yes of course, but still fixing everything(with all the different fixes that everyone wants) sometimes just doesn’t work, you need to take what you have that works and create something new that works even better, and the new races could be a win win on that side.
About the clipping issue with armors and some races, yeah, we have races that don’t have the same body proportions, you can’t expect Anet to make a new model of the armor for each race, they need to make 1 and adapt it to the other races. SHould they do it better? Yes again, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t have a new race. They should put a little more planning into the armor designs to have them race friendly, as they did for some of the last armors, look at the carapace armor on th charr, it has also an amazing tail cover!!!
So a new race remains for me a great idea.
I love pizza but I don’t like largos, they are lame…
