Stop making so much temporary content.
See im the total opposite i love temporary stuff I like getting items that you can never get again. And about SAB i like that its temporary it gives people something to look forward to.
SAB isn’t temporary…it’s just not there all the time. The Flame and Frost dungeon that was temporary. SAB comes back periodically.
It’s not all temp. Scarlet invasions, Teq, and the TA path 4 will remain. It’s good to have a mix of both, but IMO it should have a heavier emphasis on the non-temporary content than what we have now.

It means it’s reoccurring. The same as the holiday stuff. Temporary does not equal reoccurring.
Still hate SAB regardless.

Yes it does, it’s temporary..
Well it’s certainly not permanent, which I think is more to thepoint.
You’re just stuck on a narrative. Holiday content is completely normal and good for MMOs. Besides the SAB holiday, the last few patches have been all permanent content.

Ummm no. Wrestling isn’t on every night, but that doesn’t mean it’s temporary. Baseball stops for 9 months a year, that doesn’t mean it’s temporary.
Temporary means something that is there for a while and it’s gone. Things that come in cycles aren’t usually considered temporary.
No one I know says spring is temporary. Because there’ll always be another spring.

This. Is. Semantics!
And pretty pointless to the discussion. So, to rekindle something more in line with the topic: Why should something like SAB not be permanent?

SAB isn’t temporary…it’s just not there all the time. The Flame and Frost dungeon that was temporary. SAB comes back periodically.
Now that’s truly comical … kind of like saying it isn’t night, it just isn’t day all the time. The word “temporary” comes from the Latin word “temporarius”, meaning “of seasonal character.” “Temporary” means EXACTLY that “it’s just not there all the time.”

Temporary content is good for several reasons:
1) People stop playing after a while. Simple enough. Typically, most players stop doing the new content after 2-4 weeks. After that, it becomes deserted, so the exceptions don’t want to do it anyway.
2) A sense of agency. If something is available only for a limited amount of time, I value it more. It’s basic psychology that is used in marketing all the time. That’s why there are “sales”, “limited time offers”, et cetera. As such, more people will do the content because of it.
3) Player density. There are two aspects to this: time density and spacial density.Time density: if you limit the amount of time people can do something, you’ll have more people available to do the content together. Spacial density: if you limit the area in which people can move, you’ll have higher population density. I.e. people will not be spread about over permanent, multiple events.
That said, there are certain types of content that should not be temporary. These are:
1) Personal content. The social aspects become irrelevant.
2) Core endgame. This is the center, where people continue to grow and mark progress. In GW2 terms, these would be PvE cosmetics, gear, PvP rank, WvW, Achievement Points… et cetera.

Lasting, used, serving, or enjoyed for a limited time.
Yep, temporary.
I prefer permanent as I get to enjoy the content rather then race through before the clock runs out. Also it makes the world larger then it was before if it stays there.
But I can certainly say that losing the molten weapons facility was such a disappointment that I generally don’t check out the living story anymore.

Nope, I disagree. Because there is TRULY temporary content and using the same language to describe SAB leaves people with a feeling that it will never be back. Some of the content, like the Molten Alliance dungeon was truly temporary. Christmas is annual, not temporary. You’ve never heard someone in your entire life saying well it’s Christmas, temporarily. That’s a silly thing to say. It’s Christmas now and next year it will be Christmas again.
The whole point of language is to communicate. Calling something temporary that’s coming back, when there are truly temporary things out there, is just confusing and unnecessary.
Just as easy to ask why SAB doesn’t stay in the game.
Actually they are releasing way more reoccuring/permanent content right now. Tequila patch, everything was permanent. Next patch same deal. We know that sometimes later on this year we will get Molten Facility & Aetherblade retreat back as fractals, +1 new fractal. SAB is reoccurring, etc etc

Christmas is temporary….. this is some kind of joke right? Cute.
Like I said, semantics. No one wins!
And still completely beside the point.
This thread is a month or so out of date.
Anet have already moved on to giving us permanent content, they listened and changed what they were doing. There is a 2 month’ish delay because that’s how long before a LS update takes to make.
All those are recent permanent additions:-
Invasions
Tequatl
New bosses
The upcoming new 4th dungeon path
Bloodlust in WvW
Leagues in WvW
SAB is a ongoing in development, there are going to be 4 worlds, each time a world is ready it gets released, just had world 2, world 3 will be along in the future.
Perhaps when SAB is complete it will be a permanent addition or perhaps a 1 time a year thing who knows?
Wow just wow…..
All I will say is I can agree with the OP. Because with SAB coming back now and then or not the rewards that you can earn (item wise) are all once off to each time the game comes back. So there I guess you can say the REWARDS are “temporary” but the actual game comes and goes…..

I asked if you hear people calling it temporary. It’s a different question. I’ve never heard, in all my years of life, someone call Christmas temporary. You have a very twisted definition of “temporary”.
So you say. You have a twisted definition of definition.
Vayne you’re losing your marbles here man. One of the Oxford definitions is “not permanent”, which fits this quite well.
I don’t like it when people don’t use the Oxford comma, but that doesn’t mean they’re wrong. It just means they don’t use the Oxford comma.

I’m talking about nuance nothing more. Again,. do you say Christmas is temporary?
How long is he going to stay here? It’s okay honey it’s just temporary.
You’re not usually implying it will be back. I’m well aware of dictionary definitions and I’m well aware of usage which tends to supercede it.
I had this argument about the word promise with someone else in these forums.. There’s a connotation there, particularly in a game that has non-recurring temporary content, that makes the statement ambiguous or misleading.
I’m not sure why this is so hard to understand.
There are two types of temporary content in this game. SAB is type 2 temporary content. Is that really how we want to communicate?
While you may not have had any experience of another of it definitions that doesn’t make them not exist.
I’ve run into it so many times as the meaning you don’t agree with that I literally have difficulty seeing it any other way. Though I do recognize it has other definitions.
Here’s a couple of examples I run into on a regular basis. My friend doesn’t remember to pay his phone bill from time to time so I get this message “The phone number you are trying to reach xxx-xxx-xxxx is temporarily down or is no longer in service. Please check the number and try again”. On the internet i’ve run into web pages that say “Temporarily down for maintenance”.
I have to say yes I would call Christmas Temporary. Maybe it’s just an age thing this time around Vayne (no offense). :p
Anything NOT perm is in my view temporary. I think you are confusing “one time event’s” as temporary….
This kind of reminds me when I was working in my last job and I was chatting with a workmate who was a lot younger than me. We were talking about music and I said to him: “what are you crazy that song is awesome, it’s a classic”. To him the word classic was something bad and he said “exactly, it’s crap”…….I just didn’t get it lol…..

Temporarily used as an adverb, to describe a verb. Slightly different than temporary used as an adjective to describe a noun. A temporary pass ends. But none of that address the bulk of my concern. In a game with actual temporary content, returning content shouldn’t be called temporary because it’s just confusing. In fact, I had no idea of the OP knew it was coming back or not.
While I understand your want to clarify, you’re attacking a completely valid way of using the word.
We need to stop though as we’re being ultra rude to the OP.

The way I see it, SAB doesn’t last for a very long time. It disappears. It may recur, yes – but it certainly doesn’t fit the category of “Permanent” as it’s not there all the time.
Might as well call it “recurring”.
Argue with Merriam Webster if you have concerns.

Merriam Webster doesn’t play Guild Wars 2. In a game that has TRUE temporary content, referring to recurring content as temporary is confusing and possibly misleading, that’s all I’m saying. Dictionaries have no context. That’s why you can’t always depend on them for perfect communication.

Can you define to me what temporary means to you?
Because I believe there is no “implying” what temporary means – it has no other meaning and can’t be taken on any other context.
Also, what I observed – SAB is NOT always there. Sure, it might come back – it’s not hidden. It’s removed. Therefore, NOT permanent. It doesn’t persist in the game continuously. It recurs. (or will recur as you said)

I’ve explained this already in the post above. It really has nothing to do with the meaning of the word temporary. Nothing at all. It doesn’t matter what it means to me, it doesn’t matter what it means to you.
There is content in this game that is, for lack of a better word, permanently temporary. That means, it goes and it’s gone forever. There is content in this game that is recurring. It’s there and then it leaves and then comes back again.
Since we have two different kinds of “temporary” content, using one word to describe both is neither efficient nor the best way to communicate. If you know about the other temporary content and happen to come upon this thread, you might be given to believe that SAB will never return.
I’m not saying that SAB should or shouldn’t be permanent. I’m trying to say that with two different kinds of “temporary” content. we should use another word for the recurring kind…just to avoid giving the wrong impression to people who don’t know.
Edit: There have already been so many posts on temporary content, meaning non-recurring temporary content, that I can’t even really believe that this is still being discussed. I wasn’t rude to the OP, I just commented on his choice of words.

Read my post above.
Temporary is temporary. SAB is NOT always there therefore it’s a temporary content. It may return, it may not.
Tequatl is an example of a NOT temporary content – it’s ALWAYS there. It just has a timer/not happening every second but it’s always there. Every patch, every update – it is included (in our terms – programmer’s terms – it is compiled) Unlike SAB. Once we hit it’s end – SAB will be removed from the game.
So, OP’s right – you are also half-right about us using another word – but there is no need. Temporary is correct, you just clarified it will return, (meaning it will leave/will be gone) so we can call it recurring too.
I do not see recurring content as ‘temporary content’ simply due to the fact that recurring content will return. Likely on a set schedule, ie Halloween and Wintersday.
SAB does not yet have a predefined schedule, however I wouldn’t be surprised if it was back again in April around ‘Spring Break’ and again next Sept around ‘Back to School’ time. Why? Because of the theme behind this “event.” The original idea what that it was developed as a means of educating asuran offspring (“Moto, an asura inventor, created Super Adventure Box as a way to teach young asura important life skills, like cooperation and avoiding poisonous water.”).
They need a good mix. They can have temporary features that give rewards you may never see again, but they need to be constantly expanding the world and features with permanent content too. They need to have temporary story arcs that appear and you do stuff, but then leave permanent game mechanics or content to expand the world.
Also they need to add more long-term guild based goals. I think they’re pretty good on the long-term player growth, but they need big epic things for guilds to achieve and be glorious with. Things that people achieve as groups and are bigger than what any one individual can do is what MMOs are about.
Well the last update, T’qatl, is permanent. The next update, the new dungeon path is permanent. And in each Living Story there has been permanent content. It’s definitely on the increase.
They already said they’re introducing more perma to content, and that last year was more a kind of structuring phase. You can see with the Big TQ update, the other boss updates, Scarlet’s invasions. The new TAP4 will be permanent too.

Reading the last paragraph of your reply for some reason put in my head the following image:
“Coming soon to PVE: guilds will fight for control of lands. This will be done via the current dynamic event systems such as a basic example being in Queensdale where centaurs and Lionguard are constantly fighting back and forth to hold areas of land. Guilds or just groups of players will be able to hold these areas much like the same is done in WvW. There will be rewards in those areas for continuing to hold these areas by continuing to hold off the enemy invasions”.
Now something like THIS could bring each and every map and each part of those maps back to life and give people reasons to go back there. Of course DR would have to be taken into consideration and REMOVED from it all perhaps.
20 posts crying about the definition of temporary – only on the GW2 forums.
Ok now for a little perspective What I think that they are doing is creating new systems to work with. Such as with invasions, they created new code, a system within the game, that introduces an invasion system. It would be very likely that the content of this system is temporary – disposable, but the system remains persistent in the structure of the game so that they can change the content of it to their liking.
So it is as it is now, but they could easily change the mobs and story of it to fit some upcoming event. So like in the future, this could be easily replaced with risen, or even a Golem uprising. Just like they did with those clickable nodes that spawned SAB minions or aetherblades etc. So they just R&D new system codes, implement them, then reuse the code for other events. Indeed, the content is temporary, but the code remains persistent and reusable.
