Substantial Content
I think you’re probably expecting too much.
WoW comes out with an expansion every 1.5 to 2 years with almost nothing in between…and you pay a sub for that. And there’s a cash shop.
The Livign Story Season 1 would take a boatload of work to make playable. I’m sure they’re not working on that yet.
It doesn’t mean we won’t get something before HoT comes out, but I wouldn’t expect too much.
Yes, you are probably expecting to much.
They are focusing on the expansion now.
The most we can hope to get between now and then is basically re-releases of already created stuff (such as SAB, Queens Gauntlet and such).
Giving us S1 stuff would require a rather massive amount of dev-resources which are better spent on developing the expansion.

ANet is still finishing the expansion. I wouldn’t expect anything new until then.
Thing is, they’ve been working on the xpac for a while now but have still been releasing S2 and stuff. I guess now anet is going into overdrive on the xpac and that’s why they can’t really focus on anything else? I don’t see how re-releasing old content would take a lot of resources. It seems like they would have everything they need archived ‘cause they’ve already made all of it.
Yes, they have worked on it for quite some time. But they probably want it out this year, and thus they need to focus all their resources on it in order to get it done.

I don’t even play WoW and even I know this assertion to be false. Or are you going to play the “well I consider content patches featuring storyline continuation, new raids, new in-game armor sets, etc, to be ‘almost nothing’”?

You should talk to some wow players. They go in for 2-3 months, do the content and unsub till the next expansion. I have two of them in the house.

Well except that Season 1 can’t be released, because it would change the world for everything else. It was mostly open world stuff, not instanced. For much of it, you’d need huge numbers of people to do it and everyone is doing other stuff. It’s just not that simple.
To rerelease it they’d have to completely rewrite it.
They release patches every 2-3 months until about 9-10 months before a new expansion in WoW. It’s not ‘nothing’.

I don’t doubt you there. I’m sure a great many WoW players subscribe for short spans immediately after expansions and content patches – just long enough to run the content and/or chase the newest tier of gear – before unsubscribing again. But to dismiss all the content released in the interim between expansions as “almost nothing” is rather disingenuous.

Funny, many wow players seem to think it’s nothing. That’s why in the time from the release of MOP until the release of the new content 3.7 million people unsubbed.
Well, the releases are pretty content-oriented, many single player phased (technically) story parts (similar we have now in GW2 btw). They usually lose most subs during the period before the new expansion hits (that 9-10 months between the last content patch of an expansion and the new expansion). It’s really not bad.
MoP is a bad example since it didn’t please the western crowd. Now they are back to 10 million with the new one – I have yet to play it.
You are right with me though, I usually play 2-3 months WoW, see all the content and unsub, maybe I renew it once more.

Funny how 9-10 months of no releases in WoW (which requires a subscription) is okay, but as soon as Guild Wars 2 goes a month or so without releases it is the end of the world.

Less that 9-10 months of nothing is ok, just people pointing out a factual flaw that was presented.
WoW pays for the gap in content by way of sub losses. They will likely do so again at the end months of the current expansion.
The kind of people who will set an orphanage on fire after locking themselves inside it.
No matter how you slice it the OP says it’s been a while since the end of Season 2 and we’re still getting some kind of content. More than you’d get in some sub games, after which we get an expansion.
Considering that WoW makes an order of magnitude higher than Guild Wars 2, and can’t produce between expansions all that much by way of expansion…the OP’s expectations would be too high.
It’s been a while since the end of S2, but we haven’t really seen anything happen within GW2. I was expecting the time between then and HoT to still get a good amount of attention and content (like re-releasing some of the old S1 bits. this would be a perfect time for that in order to catch new players up on what’s going on,) especially since anet has been so consistent with releasing good content for the past X months. But I’m beginning to worry. Maybe I’m just being too impatient and they have something good in the works, but I’d like to see something more satisfying than the lunar new year at least by next Tuesday. Any thoughts? Am I expecting too much?
Well the storyline of the expansion will begin right were LS2 left it so I doubt they will add any kind of substantial story in the game until the expansion. It’s more likely that event-like content will be released like the lunar new year or maybe SAB?

Why do you always deal in hyperbole and straw man-arguments rather than discussing the topic at hand in a mature, constructive manner? Show me one person who has made such a claim.
You know what? Don’t. For the sake of argument let’s just assume there have been lots of people who have taken such a stance. They’re right to do so. The two games aren’t held to the same standard because Guild Wars 2 content updates are bite-sized and quickly consumed while World of Warcraft’s content updates are more substantial and take longer to digest. But I’m quite certain you knew already knew the difference.
I don’t think we’ll get anything substantial content before the expansion.
HOWEVER
The ram gemstore items expire next Tuesday, which means we could get an update as soon as then. Some of the reddit data miners hinted at tweaks to super adventure box, so that may be coming (not that anybody expects it to come before April).
We may also see a WvW season or a festival rerun (Pavilian?) to help keep us busy before the expansion.
See OP guild wars is much better than wow, so you have no right to ask for anything or haven forbid offer criticism. Better learn your place or we will make you play wow and pay the subscription (not to mention that wow has a cash shop !!!!!! as well, which unbalances the game with sparkly mounts, and unique pokemons)
On a serious note it’s only natural that there won’t be much more new content while they are working on the dlc
It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….
When the expansion hits Anet is going to want as much of a sales spike as possible. They will want to show as much ROI as fast as possible. Releasing a substantial content too close to the expansion release could impact initial sales.
I would not expect large content releases until the expansion.
To be honest: not rereleasing S1 before Hot would be a massive failure.
HoT will bring new people to the game.
Anet HAS to make sure all pre HoT content is up to date and playable.
That includes the Orr story arcs and S1.
If they dont the game will look like kitten before people get to the HoT content and might actually drive people away.

Except for the fact that neither Personal Story or S1 really did have all that much to do with Mordremoth at all.
Sure it would be nice, but it do you really think they will take a somewhat large part of the developers away from the expansion in order to rush out old content?
Releasing it WITH the expansion, possibly, but extremely unlikely that they would release it before.

Yeah neither Scarlets story, nor the origin of all those npcs that chat you up like an old friend will have an impact. Why are you called commander again?
And new players will be totaly fine with playing the broken Orr story arcs while leveling up and it cant possible turn them off.

They average 1 content patch every 7 months, and an xpac every 2~ years.
If you want to boil it down: Content patches typically consist of 1 mini zone that acts as a daily quest hub, 1 raid tier which consists of an instance with roughly 10 bosses, 1 or 2 weapon skins per weapon type, and 1 armor set per class plus 1 extra armor set per type (cloth/leather/mail/plate).
Roughly speaking.
There’s also quality to consider. GW2 skin’s are much higher quality then WoW’s. On the other hand WoW’s bosses are finely crafted and heavily scripted, generally better then GW2’s bosses. Once again on the flip side WoW’s daily quests often boil down to box with story quest “go kill 10 of X” while GW2’s, erm, ‘quest alternatives’ are more intricately put together/structured into well integrated group activities and the like.
etc etc.

I played WoW for over 5 years, Vayne. This is ABSOLUTELY false. Try reading their patch notes sometime. They release extensive amounts of content and features in between expansions. I know the cool kids love to hate on Blizzard, and that’s fine, but don’t straight up lie about them.

You should talk to some Gw2 players. They go in for about 1-2 weeks, do some of the content and stop playing altogether because they found the game to be boring. I have several of them that were coworkers/friends/family.

I think they are pretty much the same. You have kill waves mobs until they stop attacking, kill mobs until you hold a point, kill mobs as some npc walks next to you, with the condition being kill/tag X mobs to get gold

I think we can all just agree that most people don’t have the time or attention span to play MMOs the way we did back when they were new and exciting.
If you’ve played a game like WoW, got burned out by it and quit. Every time you go back to WoW you will burn out and quit in a relatively short period (you will remember why you quit in the first place basically). If they try GW2 after playing <other MMO> for years and quitting, it isn’t like what they are used to, they don’t feel that bubbly feeling they felt when they first tried WoW (or whatever MMO gave them the good feels) and end up quitting.
A lot of people jump from MMO to MMO these days trying to recapture that feeling that they had the first time they got sucked into an MMO (for me it was Asheron’s Call, and then again in WoW). Now I simply don’t have the time for that type of gaming so I enjoy GW2 immensely because you can play it ultra casually and still progress.
I didn’t get the same feels when I started GW2, but I enjoy my time when I play it so I’m not complaining.
Both are good games, both have people join and quit. That’s all that really needs saying.
It’s a medical condition, they say its terminal….

I don’t see how Anet could put in Season 1, with all of its impact and content, for replay without turning portions of it into raid content. Some of it could easily be put back in with the typical Season 2 set up, but other parts couldn’t be.
The first major part of the Scarlet story was Flame and Frost, the dungeon from that now being two fractals already in the game. There was all the Aetherblade stuff, which is also now two fractals. Then there’s the zephyr sanctum and the election. Portions could be instanced, but it’s largely just not content worth repeating. The worldwide invasions of Scarlet’s army were also huge multiplayer content. The aetherpath of TA is currently already in place, obviously.
Then you have Escape from LA, which was all hugely multiplayer across the entire map of LA. The final battle(s) of the season were two large scale, multi-player events (each with three groups of at least 20 players). I don’t know how Anet could just make that a replayable solo thing.
Now, some things could be easily put back in as they were: Queen’s Jubilee/Clockwork Chaos solo instances, like the Funhouse, the Southsun Canach instances, Dragon Bash/Sky Pirates instances, etc.
So yeah, I don’t think it’s going to be all that easy to try to make Season 1 a replayable thing like it is for Season 2; if it happens, it’ll probably be a combination of different types of content (like it kind of already is).
They could make dedicated servers for the maps that would be effected by multiplayer content (like tower of nightmares and escape from LA) and give players the option to join them when they try to load into those maps. It’s not about trying to fit it in with stuff like already existing fractals or anything like that. They would just make it very clear that, “Hey, this is S1 content and if you want to go back and experience it this is your opportunity.” Idk how hard or how much of a mess this would be. it’s just a sugestion. But I think it would definitely be a huge mistake to leave new players in the dark about how we got where we are. The xpac will bring new players, and this content needs to be available to them. (also, I’d like to play some of it again myself.)
Funny how 9-10 months of no releases in WoW (which requires a subscription) is okay, but as soon as Guild Wars 2 goes a month or so without releases it is the end of the world.
Yeah part of the reason for that is because we’ve been kittening starving for content for years.
We haven’t had an expansion yet. It’s different.
I think they are pretty much the same. You have kill waves mobs until they stop attacking, kill mobs until you hold a point, kill mobs as some npc walks next to you, with the condition being kill/tag X mobs to get gold
Don’t want to stray too far off topic here, but just to give a quick reply:
Like I said, GW2’s are better integrated/structured. Where WoW’s are just “go do X”, GW2 integrates them into the map, encouraging meaningful player cooperation/interaction and (with the more recent content in particular) essentially making map-wide mini-games. And as a dev consideration, I’d also wager the process of making a map full of DEs is more involved then populating a map with quests.
Its the way they do content, not that we literally get nothing. Its that the content we do get is both transient, and typically only appeals to a certain fraction of the player base. Like people who hate dungeons obviously aren’t going to get much out of Fractals.
And frankly I don’t stand for the pre-expansion wait for Blizzard either, when they stop adding new content and shift their resources to an expansion. I’m surprised that a significant amount still stick around even with all the leavers – I have no idea what they do for those 9-10 months.
