That was just awful, and we had to endure it for weeks, and no it’s nothing against them, this is bad dialogue for ANY sexual orientation, it’s awful cringe-worthy dialogue and frankly I am OFFENDED by such awful dialogue more than anything else and the writers should be ashamed.

I find it silly when people have the “I don’t want to see that kind of things in a videogame, a videogame is fantasy and I don’t want to see real life problems on it”
most videogames have war, murders, poverty, love stories, political complots, betrayals, thievery, and violence and that’s not a problem for anyone.
But when something that has to do with a non straight person or relatinoship, it then becomes a bold political move that should be left out of videogames.

i don’t really get it… nothing against the lgbt community, have several friends who are, and legally i think they should have more rights, but why the need to put hot topic issues in a fantasy video game? In a game about unity and fighting dragons just seems like a good way to stirr up controversy and have more religion debates in trade chat and can see otherwise good people who just happen to have a religious belief getting banned just for having a discussion (even if in a polite/friendly manner)

It makes little difference to me (and probably most other players) as most gamers don’t identify themselves as the characters in games.

I presume it’s a combination of Bruce/Caitlyn Jenner in the news + social justice identity politics type stuff pressuring video game dev’s in general to add this kinda thing.

I said that the above poster should re-evaluate if they believe they are not saying troubling things about the LGBT community. I didn’t tell them what to think, how to think, or what to say, I requested they take some time and think about how what they’re saying may not be as supportive of the LGBT community as they would like to think it is.

This is also not a discussion about unpopular opinions; LGBT people exist regardless of other people’s opinions, so it’s not a matter of having popular or unpopular opinions on the matter: We exist. Period.

But yeah; I actually think it’s really cool! I would never have expected them to add an NPC like Sya. Then again, it’s Anet we’re talking about. Really cool. I also like the dialogue she has.

So, about the topic of adding a “hot topic” to the game. Well, as we can see in this thread, it can indeed be a topic that can end up in arguments rather quickly, even if nobody actually is showing negative feelings against transgender people. That’s because society still hasn’t fully gotten used to transgender people existing. Such things take time. I don’t think that’s something that would happen ingame; especially not since she’s not a major NPC who’s “in your face” all the time, so imo those concerns are unnecessary.

But yeah. I totally need to go find her tomorrow. She seems to be awesome, and I also want to hear the dialogue/s with other NPC’s that were mentioned here.

Speaking as the parent of a transgender child, I can’t express enough how awesome I think this is. I hope to see more minorities represented in all places, including video games.

FYI, transgender people have a tough, tough go of it in life. Simply being accepted as a person (getting a job, making friends, etc.), which comes so naturally to a large part of the population, is difficult at best for people who don’t “fit the norm”. Every advancement should be lauded.

I do have one complaint though. For LGBT characters so far we have two main lesbian couples and one insignificant male homosexual couple most people probably never noticed, now the only trans NPC is also female. Next time a LGBT character is added, would it hurt for it to be a guy?

Sometimes I do question the sensibility of some people, they do know how hard it is for some people to handle what they have to go through, and then they mock them.

I’m definitely not against “having hot topics in games” (as one person put it). My only problem is I dislike the drama that comes with it. Sure, the guy who says how cool it is to find something acknowledging them is fine. Heck, people admitting to be slightly disturbed is fine. (It’s funny and as long as no one is called evil, no fowl.) What gets me is the drama that comes later, both sides claiming how disgusting and amoral the other side is.

My personal opinion? LGBT community is fine so long as gay pride signs stay off my lawn. Has nothing to do with being against the community. I just dislike any group that tries to push off its values on me.

Being LGBTQ is not a political issue. It is a fact of life. And by your arguments, why have male and female genders in a fantasy game. Or relationships. Or different political factions. Remove any source of conflict between people or differences.

I like that this game has chosen to reflect all of the people who play it, not just some, in their NPCs. It’s inclusive.

You know there are LGBTQ in many many works of fantasy right? Game of Thrones is an immediate one that comes to mind. Even Orson Scott Card (staunch Mormon) chose to include a homosexual in one of his books.

Also… as a dude who happens to be gay, I have no agenda, other than to live my life and to be treated with the same respect all people should be treated with. We don’t hold meetings where we discuss strategy or have some secret plan to convert the world. I think you meant to say, you support equality for all people, not a gay “agenda”.

Back to the topic, well I found her and I am quite impressed. I know that trans people have a tough life and how nice feeling it must be to find a character just like them in their favourite game. Sadly for many lgbt people an only place they can be truly accepted and supported is internet. It must change. People must change. Countries must change.
If it comes to the lore, I found out that mesmers are quite weird, secretive and powerful. You can never truly know them. Maybe she had that power deep in her heart to make that permanent illusion of her true self, or maybe she just used total makeover kit. Who knows, mesmers are mesmers ^^

Society as a whole is becoming more accepting of LBGT. It helps that popular celebrities are coming/came out. When you’re accepting of your favorite celebrity, be or Lady Gaga, Ellen DeGeneres, or Caitlyn Jenner, it’s a lot easier to accept their lifestyle.

As long GW2 doesnt turn into Tumblr, im ok with any gender, transgender or whatever.

Personally I liked the game better when sexual preference was left out of the game entirely. Why use it to promote or push one agenda or another. In doing so you offend someone. Leave it to the imagination of the player. Sylvari don’t reproduce like normal humanoids so it made sense. Anet said when they made the Sylvari couple they were not pushing the gay agenda, that it wasn’t going to be an issue. Then there was Kas and Jory , and I thought it was cute. But then it got overly gushy and gross. And now this. I don’t care what you identify as, your genetics say who you are. Tossing it into a game where you come to escape reality and the trouble blasted on tv, only to find it here now. Everyone has their own opinions. I’m entitled to mine. And as I said, I feel it would have been better left out, and keep what they had as soft underlying things, instead of blaring, obvious promotion of current events. All this will do is cause a stir in the current gaming population. I’m afraid that is exactly what Anet is trying to do.

I could be thinking of the wrong name because first time I heard about it was a television show, but apparently there’s surgery to help people who are essentially deaf, and some don’t want it.

Heck, what’s your opinion on vaccines a select group of people think do more harm than good? Admittedly there is the argument that if it’s for a contagious disease not taking it isn’t an option. That doesn’t exactly apply to this issue though if the sole method of spreading really is abuse.

And actually there was a very big movement in the late 80’s early 90’s to reclaim the ‘q’ word. You might find it hateful and negative but it has been embraced by many. Each to their own.

BUT seriously, my opinion is it’s great but now you have the ball rolling you will have to implement Asexuals, gays, cross dressers and the rest to save yourself from discrimination or a form of bullying… Bugs Bunny pulls it off well

Its one minor charachter in LA, why are people getting so defensive? I swear people make a big deal out of nothing. Only thing I agree on is that Marj and Kass’ relationship was far to over the top to be believable.

I’m happy she’s there but she’s not a big platform gushing deal to me nor should she be. She’s there and treated as a normal NPC and that’s all that needs to be said on the matter aside from inclusion is nice for transfolk.

And don’t get me started on Kasjory. The gushing romance woo woo snugglebum sweetness made my teeth fall out.

I have never wished a romantic pairing as much ill will as I did these two…. Oh, besides Gwen and Keiran in GW.

This NPC is nicely done, a good ’you’re welcome here’ move, nothing huge, but a good message nonetheless. The Kas/Jory romance was like very bad fan fiction. They were really obnoxious. They’d be obnoxious in any gender pairing. I hope they’ll do something better along those lines. The very brief (and in one storyline only) Sylvari male romance was better, as I remember.
