Temporary bans for profanity
“Swearing provides a relief denied even to prayer” – Mark Twain
That being said… I love when people substitute “kitten” for swear words. It’s funny as a motherkitten.
Kitten you, you son of a kitten!
The profanity filter is NOT an excuse to swear in a repeated and overdone manner which lowers the level of maturity of the ingame chat, swearing is awesome and I don’t want it banned it’s just part of life and whatnot but swearing REPEATEDLY and in an OVER THE TOP manner in an IN GAME CHAT is like being that irritatingly foul mouthed child with voice control issues that everyone wishes would just shut the heck up or be dealt with by their parent, you may as well be shouting at traffic if you overdo it because you just look insane.
I think you’re over reacting and with the filter on you won’t even see them swear.
So when the game displays —-- instead of f—- (use your imagination for the rest of the word) you don’t automatically know what that word is? The profanity filer doesn’t remove words or hide anything, it just censors it. So yes, you do still see them swear. when you see “——” in game your mind will automatically fill in the blanks.
All that is beside the point though. It doesn’t matter what any one persons opinion on it is. We all agreed to the code of conduct when we started playing the game otherwise you wouldn’t be playing it. You had to click the agree button which is the same as signing as contract.
Now, just like in life you don’t have to follow the rules if you don’t want to. But also just like in life if you don’t you’d better be prepared to accept the consequences. In this case anet made the rules, follow them or don’t.
I’d also like to point out that it’s actually pretty hard to get banned for swearing unless it’s completely over the top and gets reported by quite a few people. Anyone who has been out right banned for swearing likely deserves it. Most people will initially just get a suspension their first time and it tells you exactly why you were suspended from the game.
I would say that’s a good hint about what you need to change if you want to keep playing the game.
Anets official response on the matter:
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/support/account/Banned-for-Inappropriate-Language/first#post1091437
“Quoted because this sums it up nicely. If you want to see it in official parlance, click my name and search for the many other posts I have made explaining that the fact the game has a filter doesn’t mean that you can swear or use offensive names. I just posted about this five minutes ago, and have posted about this virtually every day since beta.”

lol fellyn so do you report people when you see kitten because you can fill in the blank with the appropriate swear word
lol fellyn so do you report people when you see kitten because you can fill in the blank with the appropriate swear word
I’m not 5, so yeah, it’s fairly easy to fill in the blanks. I will report people when they are being stupid and I feel they deserve it, but as far as cursing goes? It doesn’t bother me so much, I have the swear filter off.
What I do have a problem with is people who break the rules and then complain about being punished. We all agreed to the rules no matter how you feel about them, accept your punishment quietly and move on.
P.S. It says right in the report box that if you abuse the report function you will be punished. Anet doesn’t just go on what people report, they do in fact check chat logs. So once again if you are banned outright for cursing, you likely deserve it. No one who curses (even if they get reported) once every few hours is going to get banned for it. Suspended maybe, but not banned.

Constitution does not apply to games.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
Any material on the internet is not subject to this clause because all of the internet is considered a form of private property. And people have full rights over private property, not to ‘censor’ those on it or to punish them for grievances committed within it, but full rights to remove anyone from said property for whatever reason they wish.
That is, they can’t censor you specifically, but they can just kick you out. Or in the case of internet property, ban you.
(edited by Conncept.7638)
People reported for profanity are banned, that’s a fact.
If you need to swear, do it in “real life”, verbally, no need to pollute the in game public chat with your written rudeness.I usually ignore the occasional “F” word and similar stuff, but if someone gets into personal attacks and direct insults, or worse, racism or similar crap, I will report him for the greater good of the community and enjoy my game time without him polluting the public chat.
Freedom of speech is not an excuse to behave like a rude brat… or if you believe that, be my guest and put your actions where your mouth is, go to your local bar, or library, or even better, police station, and start insulting the people there… I’m not responsible of what is going to happen to you though.
god forbid you ever attend a professional sporting event, your virgin ears will be ruined by both the fans and players.
Reporting people for cussing is childish. Mommy, timmmy said the f word!!
You may eventually want to learn to read and understand what people post before answering.
I don’t give a “kitten” about the “f word” and similar stuff. There’s a major difference between cussing and insulting.
But when it gets personal and into insults, or turns into racisms or similar extremes, then yes, I’m annoyed, and yes, I will report it so the person gets punished, as per the behavior rules of this game.
And before you post, think twice… because yes, even during those “sport events” you mention… while cussing is no problem, verbal aggression is punished by the law just as well as physical aggression… and that works even in liberal USA. You can’t just go and insult people randomly without consequences. Unless you want either your nose be broken or the police take you in for a day or two of cooling down in their jail cells. In an online game, the equivalent of this is being reported and banned.

There are rules against harassment in game that you can report people for…
But if someone simply insults you and you report them, grow up. There is a block function in the game, and you know, you can just not associate with the kitten any more.
To those people touting “Freedom of speech” and waving other official documents around stating they have a right, not one of them gives you the right to be base, degrading, crude, racist, foul mouthed, vulgar, throwing around sexual inuendo and the list goes on.
What those documents or laws do give you is the ability to voice opinion or grievances in an intelligent manner without fear of censorship, the public will then determine if you are an idiot or worth reading or listening to, that is all.
Civilized is civilized, get a clue.

So you’re telling some one who is getting insulted that they need to grow up instead of the person who is doing the insulting. Wouldn’t the person who needs to do the most growing be the person who feels the need to insult people over a video game?
I guess I must have a backwards way of looking at things.

maybe they should both grow up. Or maybe it doesn’t matter. The person who feels they are cheated at the end is the one who probably can change their way of thinking.

Disagreed.
If someone insults me face to face in real life, he will face consequences. Either with me directly or with the authorities.
Same in game. There’s no need for insults, never. Specially not when it’s from a coward hidden behind a screen and keyboard. If you don’t put consequences for behaving like a rude person, you get an utterly bad community, be it in “real life” or online.
Since in GW2 or any other online game, you can’t apply consequences to insults yourself, you have to use the report system, which is the equivalent of real life consequences for behaving like an antisocial, rude person.
Don’t want to face those consequences? Respect the rules, and respect your co-players. They are human beings behind those screens and keyboards. For all you know, the guy you just insulted may be a doctor who could save your life, or a heavy weight boxer who would punch your nose into your face if you were that rude to him face to face. So just don’t do it.
The big problem of the Internet in general is that it gives the term “prey on the weak” a whole new dimension, since everyone is anonymous and therefore a potential target of rudeness and bad behavior with little consequences, if any. Cowards who wouldn’t dare to be rude face to face suddenly become self proclaimed bullies because they are made immune to consequences by the almighty network. I’m glad ANet doesn’t accept that and punishes those bullies.

If they can’t then maybe they don’t deserve the right to play the game and interact with people who don’t feel the need to insult others.
Why should the person who doesn’t think they have a right to insult others have to change their way of thinking? That is some seriously backwards logic.
Treat others as you want to be treated, and all that..
It’s sad to see people impose their personal standards on others and feign superiority. Why do we have to expect everyone to conform to our beliefs? React to statements based on its context. No one is better just because he/she avoids using specific words.

Actually, “some” people are better than others because even in an environment like the Internet, where there are little consequences for behaving rudely or in an antisocial way, they still respect the other players as human beings. And, yes, those people who respect others even when not forced to by laws, rules or other consequences are better than those who don’t. And it’s not about personal standards either, you just don’t go to a random person in the street and insult her. Same applies in an online community. Not insulting a random person just because you can and there’s no risk actually indeed makes you a better person – a person with more self control, with more respect towards others.
I’m not claiming being part of the “better people”, by the way, just stating the obvious. There are definitely people much better than me online.

I honestly don’t get it. You agreed to follow a set of rules when you first signed into the game and clicked that agree button. You alone are responsible for your actions and the consequences that follow them. I hate to get all real but this is a huge problem with society these days. People blame others when they do something stupid instead of looking no further than their own feet for the cause of their problems.
The only people imposing their standards on others is anet. Follow the rules you agreed to when you first played the game or don’t. But if you choose not to then don’t be surprised when you get punished. I’m not saying you will be punished for swearing but that you shouldn’t be surprised when you do.
People don’t need to tough up. People don’t need to deal with it. People don’t need to block others. The only ones who needs to deal with it are the people who are breaking the code of conduct they agreed to weather they read it or not.
It’s really not hard to understand. It has nothing to do with personal opinions or beliefs.

Seriously, it’s not worth it to tattle or go after someone every time they insult you.
I think you’re misunderstanding my point. If someone reacts with an expletive on motor, what’s wrong with that? I’m only responding based on the generality of the OP.
Sure, racist and sexist slurs should merit a ban, but swearing generally is just a matter of preference.

While most people don’t bother, for obvious reasons (not worth the hassle), insulting people is a trial worthy offense even in USA. Actually, even MORE in USA… but that’s another story.
As I said, please be my guest, and get your actions up to where your loud mouth is. Go in some public place in your country and town, and start insult people in there. Keep on doing it. Because otherwise, you only confirm my argument that most rude people online only do it “because they can”, and wouldn’t do it face to face in real life. Cowards behind a keyboard.

You said:
“if some one insults you”
Meaning the person being insulted, the target, “you”.
And:
“and you report them”
Meaning the person being insult reports the person who insulted them. Once again, the target, “you”.
Finally:
“grow up”
Meaning the person who just got insulted needs to grow up.
So tell me where I mistranslated your post. Because to me it looks like you’re telling people who are in the receiving end of insults that they need to grow up.

Well then explain yourself better. Because to most people you basically said that if you get insulted by some one you should just deal with it and the person who did the insulting did no wrong. You made it seem like the person who is getting (in your scenario) insulted is somehow in the wrong. Since you specifically only mention the person who is on the receiving end of the insults we have nothing else to go on.

A street performer, sure… as I said, please be my guest and try it. Go to some random real life community, just like this online community here is, and start to insult random people. You WILL get consequences. Same here.
You don’t make any sense, and you compare apples and oranges. Sure, I’ve also exchanged some mild slurs with friends, on a friendly tone. That’s very different from going straight to some random guy in the street and tell him “hello, you’re a moron” (for instance, just an example). And that’s what people who are rude in game do, except that they only do so because they think they are 100% immune to any consequences, when the insulted guy in “real life” may punch their nose in or complain to the police for public aggression. Authority is what keeps real life communities from becoming an anarchy. Same thing for online communities.

So now people are offended by blanks? Simply amazing and utterly redicilous. It’s perfectly fine for bleeping to be used instead of profanity on public tv. Do you choose to watch shows with bleeping and then write in to the TV networks? No, because that’s just silly. It’s the same thing when you report some one for using the filter.
If you choose the watch the tv show uncensored after a warning… is it then logical to complain about the non-bleeped dialogue? No. Again… that’s just silly.
Not to mention you’re playing a game where you are killing things. So you’re fine with the constant virtual genocide of people… but bad words. That’s just too far. GG.
Another funny thing (not ha ha funny, but wat funny) is that I can type in blanks and not need to worry about being banned. But if I curse and the game filters it I can… because of something some one else chose to do with their game which obviously causes the game to show profanity. So frak logic
Oh yea… I can also use nonsence words like frak, frell, shazbot, gorram, etc. and not need to worry about banned. Those are not profanity and not caught by the in game filter so… you’re seeing those words and can’t do a thing about it. Is that what you all want? Or would you prefer to encourage others to just use their filter and see nothing when people to use actual profanity.

(If you missed the point of that it was to illustrate that offense is taken and not given. You can choose to be offended by anything. If you want censorship for things you are offended by but not everything everyone is offended by… which is everything… then that’s blatant hypocrisy.)

Except for you agreed to a set of rules when you first signed into the game. Why do people keep over looking this simple fact? If you didn’t read those rules or feel they don’t apply to you that is no ones problem but your own.
The profanity filter isn’t there because you can say whatever you want. It’s there because anet cannot control what people say or do. They can only react after the fact.
I get what you’re saying and I agree with it. I have the swear filter off and swearing doesn’t bother me. But that doesn’t matter because I don’t enforce the rules of the game and neither do you.
Frak (I hate that word, tbh) – is from Battlestar Galatica
Gorram – firefly
These aren’t technically real words? As in they exist in no english dictionary that I can find. Purely made up for their respective tv shows.

Not that I mind swearing (in general, insults is something completely different) in game but I do consider it to be a very immature form of communication.
There are those adults among us, “Aberrant”, and I like to think it’s the majority, who don’t mind the “F” word or the “S” world, but still mind direct insults or very bad racist slurs. Apples and Oranges. And yeah, I will report you for using the “N” word (or similar stuff). Without thinking twice.
It’s still bannable to even use the occasional profanity. Also I added a bit to my post about giving/taking offense and censorship… which you might want to read and ponder.
Except that ANet doesn’t care about what you do in private chat (aka guild chat and private messages).
Everyone has his own personal level of tolerance about profanity, but the ultimate judge is ANet… and they have very well defined rules about that. While I may let your “F” and “S” go and ignore them, someone else may report them, and you may still get punished… why? Because you broke the rules you agreed to when you started playing this game.
Want to curse? Keep it to friends, private and guild chat, or just to yourself verbally in real life. You have no right to force random people to endure your rudeness in this game, because the game rules forbid it. There’s no “if” or “but”. There’s only rules – you break them, you take the risk of someone reporting you and you being punished. Just like you may drive over the speed limit for years in real life and suddenly get caught and punished.

How silly would it be to report someone for saying “Kitten, I died!”. It’s like telling on a person on the street because he shouldn’t be using ‘bad words’.

Be that as it may. It’s still against the rules. Yeah a person would have to be really uptight for reporting some one for saying something like that but that doesn’t change the fact that the person who said it broke the rules to begin with.
Also it’s completely unlikely that some one would get outright banned for just saying that or even cursing in /m 1 or 2 times a day. They would likely get suspended for 3 days the first time. It would take a much heavier or repeated offense to get banned. Also it probably takes quite a few reports to get someone suspended for the first time to begin with.
So yeah, if you’re banned, you likely deserve it because you didn’t heed the previous warnings.

Just a jfyi… I’m not profane… but I have no problems with reading/hearing profanity. I’m simply stating the logical argument against all of this (which I agree with).
I know that A-net owns the game and bla bla bla… again… that doesn’t mean it’s just.
I would also love you to show me the tos/post where they say it’s ok to be profane in team/guild chat… since that doesn’t exist.

While swearing is immature, it may sometimes be the only way to somehow at least provide a little retaliation against griefplayers.
Instantly reporting people while having the filters turned off, on the other hand, is way more immature. You always go cry for mommy or find a police officer to bother with “he called me a kitten”, I mean really?
Again, you are arguing on semantics.. Sure it is LAWFUL to report a person for saying “Kitten, I died!” as per the ToA but is it, for all intents and purposes, sound? Is a person who employs this to mask his own oversensitiveness any better than the person he reported for saying “Kitten, I died!”? Objectively speaking, who would you rather have?

it’s against the law to walk across the street without a crosswalk. do you call the police when you see someone do it? reporting someone for simply cursing or “insulting” you with mild language is equally laughable and only clogs up the already slow system. I’m amazed at the kitten people report.
fwiw though I talk all kinds of kitten in spvp, it is a great tool to get people to play poorly and have people telling me to enjoy my ban and that I have been reported and blocked and I have yet to be suspended or warned. so hopefully those people were banned for reporting trash talk as harassment.

I’m pretty sure Arenanet hands out temporary bans for people who verbally abuse others, including swearing excessively at them.
A well-known Commander on my server was banned for such behaviour where others wanted us to basically sign a petition to remove the ban.
However, you have to report people or nothing will change, and you won’t get banned immediately so it may take a few reports at least for before action will be taken.
Of course, I do agree swearing is immature and shows a lack of education as the person cannot communicate an idea across effectively.

You can be punished for abusing the report button. It says so right in the report box.
I didn’t say I report people for swearing, did I? You know as well as I do that there are uptight people in this world that take everything as a personal insult even when what is being said isn’t meant to be.
The only argument I’m making is that we all agreed to follow a certain rule set when we started the game so when and if you get suspended or banned for swearing you shouldn’t be surprised and then start complaining on the forums.

How does using a swearword equate to lack of education? Well, if it makes people feel big because he avoids using it, to each his own I guess. Geez, the number of ways one can claim superiority over another human being is surprising.

Outside of racial slurs, just turn on the filter if it’s an issue.
Arena net isn’t going to ban people for occasionally saying the f word, but they will ban you for verbally abusing someone. That’s the difference.
I employ, er, colourful language on a fairly constant basis. Expletives. Not abuse. Abuse should be punished.
What truly bothers me is people who will use strange spellings and spacings to get around the profanity filter that can be turned off. That’s just rude.
All these, including racial slurs, can be avoided by keeping filter on and/or blocking said user so you never have to see anything they type ever again.
I’m not attempting to be abrasive, but in all honesty, if ‘bad words’ or ‘name calling’ bothers you, it’s not ANET’s problem, it’s yours. Profanity blocker or simply blocking a user are viable solutions.
Issue boils down to you wanting revenge on someone who offended you; to say otherwise means your brain can’t handle keeping profanity filter on, or right clicking and blocking a user. So please, taking a high and noble stance on ‘vulgar’ speech while demanding revenge for said speech isn’t very high and noble.
Filter, block.. done.
There are rules against harassment in game that you can report people for…
But if someone simply insults you and you report them, grow up. There is a block function in the game, and you know, you can just not associate with the kitten any more.
Wrong. You should absolutely report them and get them suspended for 3 days. Period. Not doing so is just double standard.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
You do realise that your rules dont apply anywhere else but in the USA.

Actually, if you think about it. Reporting another player does not requires the offensive language to be hurled especially to you. So in another word, you can report your enemy commanders (even if you do not know whether he has sweared before) but if by sheer luck he has and the chat log (the almighty evidence) is there, then you win! if it’s not, then you can just argue ‘but i find that offensive’.

Ideally, this is how it should be. Everyone who argues against swearing (in general) should do this. The law applies to all, correct, unless you do admit for having double standards? So yea, if you’re gonna report based on ToA’s stance on profanity alone, everyone who says “kitten” regardless of context SHOULD be reported. But that is just so tedious and silly. And well, you guys probably need to grow a thicker hide, you kittens. XD
