An activity is generally the daily random PvP-like mini-game that you find during festivals. There’s an NPC on the mystic plaza that has one that changes per day, as well as things like Bell choirs, winter wonderland jumping puzzle toypocalypse and snowball arena, currently going on with wintersday.

The daily rotation ones are:
Kegbrawl, southsun survival, crabtoss and zephyr sprint (I think)

I kind of knew that. Thx for the explanation.

What can I do with the hundred or so Box o’ funs I have and the toys from some outfits, like broomstick and such.

We use boxes of fun to mark stuff during guild events. Like if there’s a short cut in a guild rush we’ll drop a box of fun to mark it for people coming through.

I Like the new concept but the area specific events I don’t. You end up with over run events that many people doing them do not even get credit for. Other than that I think the new concept is good.

I’ve been refraining from posting on this topic these last few days, but I’ve gotta ask since it’s been brought up more or less in these last few pages:

Why should AP be awarded for doing what you would have been doing anyway? What is intrinsically problematic with being expected to go out of your way for a reward?

As a related question: given that the prevailing argument is that the old dailies could be completed by some without doing anything they wouldn’t be doing anyway, what purpose did the old dailies serve? What value did they add to the game?

@ Subdue

Why award AP for any of this stuff? It’s not like it’s all involved or anything. I can’t even tell you how many AP I got for clicking the LS Click Object of the Update before I decided I wasn’t going to do that anymore.

Some AP are in fact awarded for doing stuff you’d do anyway. Things like the Slayer Achievements or the Weapon Master ones, most of which I got by just playing. Now, there are some of those that do require extra effort (Shield Master, for instance, or Giant Slayer), but a great many of them just … happen.

As to the purpose of “old dailies.” At launch, dailies were touted as a system to provide a little extra reward for playing regularly. That’s been their purpose for two years plus, right up until Dec 16, though the “little reward” got a little bigger with laurels.

Now, dailies are a system to reward people for (potentially) branching out. Neither “purpose” is a monumental revolution in game design. They’re just different. Both provide benefits to the developer (if you can’t see the value of enticing people to log in and play, you should reexamine your point of view). As far as the new dailies go, I have some reservations about the wisdom of enticing hordes of 80’s into starter zones to dominate the events. Otherwise, I think that they also serve a purpose. It’s not a better purpose, but it is different.

For me (but I’m new) the “old” dailies (the ones immediately before the current system) were a kind of yardstick for “what do I want to do today?” – I’d log in with a plan like “Complete Plains of Ascalon” (like I said, I’m new :P ) and see what the dailies were and try and get as many of those as possible while also doing what I was doing. So they guided the way that I played, rather than giving me exactly things to do.

Now, I log on and it’s like “the dailies aren’t in areas I was planning on visiting today” so I don’t do them.

I do see your point about “AP should be awarded for going out of your way” – that is to say, your view on them is they are strictly extras. My viewpoint, and I suspect many others, is that when I get to the character select screen and it has that little gold progress bar which tells me – in some ways – “am I getting anywhere in this game”?

Under the previous daily system, that gold bar was consistently going up, which was a nice little psychological boost to let me know that I am, in fact, achieving something.

It’s a difference in philosophy, that’s for sure. I consider dailies to be “things that let you know you’re Doing It Right™” while you I suspect consider them to be “Extras I can go and get if I need to”.

Crafting is a PvE activity. I’m not sure how you think it’s not. Mystic forge the same thing.

I can’t believe anyone would think it’s PvE. There’s no ‘versus’ involved in it at all. The crafting station offers neither challenge nor resistance. It’s as much ‘PvE’ as moving an item from one inventory slot to another is PvE. Why do you think crafting is PvE? Because it’s not one of the other game modes?

Crafting is usually part of the character’s development – this part is seen as being a PvE thing because crafting doesn’t matter in sPvP. In WvW crafting isn’t an issue either because you an get most armor/weapons for a bit of money and WvW tokens – very much unlike outside of WvW where you have a very limited choice of armor to obtain (especially while < 80) so the developers made you either buy thing from the BLTP or craft them.

I guess since ANet put this into the non sPVP and non WvW mode it’s same to assume that they can be counted among PvE activities. Just for fun: Make a new character, put all your gold away and then see how you get the armor you want while playing PvE if you can’t buy (no money) and won’t craft …

The people haven’t changed, the game has. People’s preferences should be well-known to ANet, because they’re reflected in their behaviour and their behaviour can be measured.

There’s a lot of assumptions in your reasoning, but if we go from this sentence: If you assume ANet knows people’s preferences, wouldn’t it be just as safe to assume they implemented these changes because they know what will benefit the majority most?

Those who only play for the rewards don’t seem to understand those who play for the fun of it. They give advice equivalent to “It’s not so bad, just close your eyes and think of England, it’ll be over quickly.” They don’t understand that some are not willing to prostitute themselves.

So what are you playing for, rewards or fun? And if you are playing for fun, why do you care if you get the rewards for today’s dailies or not? There are always other ways to get those rewards, spend a bit of extra time in whatever gamemode you desire, and you’ll have all the shinies that the dailies give you without going out of your way.

That’s the beauty of the new system: The “real” rewards were moved to just logging in, while the dailies mostly reward you with a little extra chest and the warm feeling you get when it pops up. Anything inside that chest can be aquired just as well by just playing the corresponding content just a few minutes longer (or a lot longer in the case of the exotic crafter ).

Personally, I won’t go out of my way to do daily events or world bosses, since that is not the kind of content I enjoy (even though I’m heavily pve focussed). I like to jump into wvw or pvp occasionally, but not daily either. So I “miss out” on 10 AP some days, but fortunately AP aren’t something I’m going after anyway, so I don’t care. What I care about is spending my playtime in ways I enjoy, and occasionally trying new things. The new dailies are doing a good job there for me, like motivating me to finally research a proper pvp build for my ranger (which to my surprised I’ve really enjoyed playing in pvp).

I like the new dailies: They are quick. You do need to play some specific content, however, which may not suit some.

I think the devs are already aware of certain flaws in the PVE dailies like: “complete x events in specific map” or “kill this event champ/leg.”; these do not work because of the sheer amount of people attempting to do them at once often breaking or making it all but impossible to complete the events. There’s also the PvP “win once with specific class”-daily which sees way too many players in pvp of either of two classes gathering in hot join.

That said I enjoy the zone specific dailies like “zone miner/lumberer/gatherer” or “zone vista viewer”, the rank rewards daily and others similar for wvw.

Make more of the pve ones less zerg prone. E.g. “zone jumping puzzle” or “kill this many of specific creature” or “daily dungeon path”, “diving spot”, “heart completer”, etc.

That is all.

Hi,

This may seem OTT, but I’ve had guild members stop playing because of this change. Their evenings were normally spent logging on and going through the PVE dailies, and enjoyed doing them. Now, they are so restricted that they feel this fun has gone, and they have just stopped logging in. For myself, I dont like how I now have to find one specific event and stand on waiting for 10 minutes for it, or have to go to one specific place to harvest. I prefered having lots of options and deciding where and when I went to do it, plus the XP I got for my alts was good fun and helped me level.

I feel this change has made the game worse, which is a big shame

I think someone up in Design Heaven made too many decisions without consulting the reality of many situations. Also, their metrics seem to be more useless than the advice from a magic 8 ball if the changes we’ve been seeing since the big April blowout have been an accurate indication of what their metrics lead them to.

Metrics: not that useful for making subjective, experientially affective design decisions. No amount of math in the world will tell you how to make good soup, or why someone thinks this soup is good and that soup is bad.

Sorry Anet, but leave the addict’s dependence on user metrics to economists.

I figured I’d give it a few weeks to try it out before I commented. Overall this change is OK. One peeve is the area specific event. As mentioned before a lot of times zergs finish the event even before you can get to it or, as it has happened to me quite a few times if you arrive at the tail end of it, manage a few hits/kills you don’t get acknowledgement of the event. My biggest peeve however is that with the old system I was getting the dailies done while leveling my alts. Now if I want to get them done I have to switch characters to get it done as my alts do not have all the zones. Having limited playtime, this update definitely affect my play style but, not being an avid AP collector well, I’ll stick to working on my alts.

For my own preferences, I’m not keen on the champion thing. Just not my cup of tea. I play PvE only – as that’s what I enjoy doing – so my view is biased in having more PvE options.

Having said that, I don’t find it too much of a problem as I’m not chasing achievements – makes the game seem like having to go to work And I salute the daily log on to accumulate stuff like laurels.

It seems to me the only dailies that are a real problem are the events, because I generally just skip them. Then again I go for max rewards, which surely is mostly the PvP ones, those extra reward track things there are like mini dungeon runs. As where just getting karma experience and the like is very little in comparison.

The core of this new daily achievements system is good, but it does need refinement.

Pros:

- You can complete them faster than the previous system, but some work is still required.
- They encourage players to populate different areas each day, helping to prevent zones from becoming empty and lifeless.
- Laurels are no longer tied to them, so there is less need to do them.

Cons:

- Gathering, Vistas, and other quick to do activities are a bit pointless in my opinion. They might get players into other zones, but they are not there for long and it is more of a hinderance than an achievement.
- Because there is only usually 1 area for the events activity it can sometimes cause frustration for players leveling in those zones trying to do events.
- Some of the activity options (profession specific PvP dailies, etc) have had a negative impact on the enjoyment of others.

The main function of dailies now is to provide a means of acquiring a small amount of achievement points each day and to gain some extra loot in the process. Because laurels are no longer attached to them the incentive to do them has been reduced and for many the need to do them has been removed completely.

Another function of the dailies is to get players doing various activities and to populate zones, and in some part they are achieving that. But they are not perfect and some of them are causing problems. The core system in general is much better, but the finer points need to be ironed out. Therefore I am putting forward the below suggestions to improve the current system.

Before I do that though, there is one thing I’d like people to consider. I see a lot of people complaining about how they can no long do them by simply playing the game. Well, I put it to you this way. You are supposed to work at them, that is the point. They are achievements and therefore should require at least some effort in order to gain the reward. It would not be much of an achievement if you did them without thinking would it?

Now, on to the suggestions:

The basic structure remains unchanged, as this works well I feel, so only the activities themselves need to change, and even then only a little.

PvE Dailies

Event activities – These, for the most part, do not need to change that much. However, I feel limiting them to only one zone can sometimes cause problems for players not trying to do the daily. Therefore, my suggested change for this activity is to have a selection of 2-3 zones in that one daily achievement, to spread the players about a bit more.

I do not think opening it up to an entire areas (Shiverpeaks, Kryta, etc) would work, as you will still end up with empty zones this way, but at least provide 2-3 specific zones, so there is more choice and less zergy player activity concentrated in one zone.

Remove Gathering and Vista – I do not feel this activity is really helping that much, and if anything it is more of an annoyance than an achievement. It’s not difficult to go gather or jump to a vista, and these things can be taught to the player another way. They are something most players do naturally, and really do not need to be reinforced every day.

Mini Quests – I have often wondered why we do not get random quest systems in MMO’s, when it would seem the perfect environment to add them. With so many players playing the game you need some sort of randomized element to keep players interested. So why not add a random mini quest/adventure to the daily achievements list?

These could be mini instances that are only available on that day or open world quests with clues and temporary NPC’s guiding you on your journey. I feel this would be something different for us to do and potentially be worthy of being called an achievement.

PvP Dailies

For the most part I feel the PvP dailies are ok, but the one daily I think is causing the most headache among players is the profession specific daily. While I can see Anet were merely trying to get players experiencing other professions, I feel there are better ways of doing this without it negatively impacting other players.

Ideally I would like to see this daily removed completely, but if it has to stay I would suggest that this at least be changed slightly to include 2-3 different professions in the same achievement. Limiting it to only one profession is problematic, but if players were allowed to choose between 2-3 specific professions, this may help alleviate the problem a little. But again, ideally, I would prefer it if this achievement was removed.

WvW Dailies

Like PvP dailies, most of the WvW dailies are ok, as far as I can see, and it is difficult to think of activities to add that are not already part of the dailies. Providing there is always a balanced variety of activities I do not see the WvW dailies being too much of a problem.

Others might have more suggestions or fixes for the problematic dailies, but I do not think we need the old system back. I found it boring and, in most cases, not worthy of the name achievements. Kill 40 mobs? Not really much of an achievement as it’s something you do anyway. Gather 50 ore? Wow, how exciting. And the fact you could limit your dailies to a select few areas was problematic in other ways. Empty zones, not enough players for certain events, or events not even being touched. So while people may have found the dailies better for thier playstyle, they were problematic to the game itself and not really achieving their purpose.

Some might argue that they should add more events or improve the existing ones to make them more interesting or appealing. And to that I agree. I would much rather see them put their efforts into improving the core game. But it is human nature to always take the path of least resistance and to settle into a confort zone. Therefore, without proper incentive many players will simply ignore or not bother with anything outside thier box, even if they would enjoy it, because they KNOW that what they do currently is enjoyable and easy.

I initially posted in this thread stating that Anet should stop focusing on the dailies and put more effort into the core game, but I am starting to see the benefit of this new system now. So I am glad they took the time and effort to change it, and with a few minor tweaks the system could be even better.

I’d like to see some zones dropped from the rotation or more group/scaled events added to those zones. For example, Plains of Ashford this morning took forever—there were too many people and events were completed very quickly. Another example is Snowden Drifts, which was very tedious (I started the “Cull the Furfly…” event and it was over before I got to it, even with a speed boost.

This would be great! Frankly, I have no ideea why it was not added from the beginning. Regardless, it is a small issue and the new daily system is awesome (although granting more WvW experience for the WvW dailies would be great, 250 is way too little, or to give instead stuff like superior blueprints – give people stuff they can actually use for WvW and are helpful, not more badges of honor!).

I was getting five to eight AP every day while having mild fun in Dry Top, SW, or Orr with top level characters with top level gear. The 10k chest was in range. Now I’m supposed to stand around in a swamp waiting for an oh-so-scary Behemoth, or maybe kill lvl 8 slimes in Metrica Province. I’m not gonna do stupid pet tricks, so the chest is no longer in reach and my desire to play has slipped to the point where I am just senselessly logging on and off for the daily reward. The trait change, the daily change, the lack of expansion, and the appalling lack of communication is becoming too much. All very personal, I know… Not being a good little metric, I know…

@ Rin – love the mini quest idea!

Thanks. I am really surprised no-one had done it before in an MMO. I know we have events that trigger at different times, but they are not really that random and some of them rotate far too frequently. Having a quest tied to a daily rotation (hopefully with a long enough list of different quests to choose from, so they didn’t rotate too quickly) it would add an extra random element to give the players something to do.

Even better would be a system that picked random elements from different subsystems, to build up a different randomized quest each time. But I think this would be a difficult undertaking, and perhaps not one that could/should be tied to the daily achievement. But a quest rotation would be pretty cool I think.

I’m not sure dropping zones off the rotation completely is a good solution, as Anet still need to find ways to encourage players to populate them, and for the most part the daily events is doing that. However, I understand your frustration, and that is why I feel offering 1-2 more specific zone options would help to reduce that frustration a little.

I can see why fighting low level mobs would be no fun for you, but I think that is an issue with downscaling not the daily events activity. If Anet can fix the scaling then this would no longer be a problem, because you will be adequatly challenged wherever you went.

Anet wants players of all levels having fun in all zones, so in this particular case the most important thing for them to fix is the scaling, not the daily events achievement.

The old dailies involved more “work” than the new ones do (at least on many days). What the “complete them organically” card is really about is the conversion of an existing reward system that gave an extra little reward for doing tasks most anywhere to one which gives a little extra reward for doing fewer tasks in specific places.

Stop pretending the new dailies are real achievements. They are called achievements, they award points. That’s it.

Teammate reviver. That might have problems. Someone dies, everyone nearby races over to get revive. Or people getting mad because they are trying to get their daily revive and get killed while rezzing. I would think that would only really work where it’s friends of guildies together working cooperatively to get the PvP daily. (You kill me then I kill you agreements).

I logged in, got my reward, looked at the pve dailies (I don’t do pvp or wvw. I don’t find them fun.) Decided I didn’t really want to get events in PoA or do the SB in Queensdale. So I logged out and played another game. So last night I played for fun.

Those who only play for the rewards don’t seem to understand those who play for the fun of it. They give advice equivalent to “It’s not so bad, just close your eyes and think of England, it’ll be over quickly.” They don’t understand that some are not willing to prostitute themselves.

Hopefully someone at Anet will realise that many are doing the same now.

Just to echo the same sentiment.
The specific nature of the new dallies have made them more of chore rather than fun.

So now I visit Tyria far less than I used to, and spend more time and ‘money’ playing another game.

It is a real shame, as GW2 had such potential two years ago, but some bizarre design choices in past 12 months has changed my opinion.

You’re not supposed to wait for the champ or to kill level 8 slime somewhere. You’re supposed to pick of the 12 activities available 3 (!!!) and complete them. Unless you’re one of those “I don’t do dungeons, nor fractals – and anything where I might be killed by a player …” players you can get those 3 activities done in less than 10 minutes. Then you have 10 AP (more than you said you had previously) and can spend the rest of your playtime doing whatever suits you.

Do you people even read your own posts? It’s about time the “work for them” card goes out of style. While the irony of, “It takes less work,” and “…should require some effort.” is delicious, it’s really kind of silly.

That’s it.

I guess you didn’t exclude yourself in your opening statement. If you re-read my quote you kindly included in your post you will see I said the new dailies can be done faster, not requires less work. Unless of course your definition of less work somehow translates in to done faster. I guess you must have a specific situation in mind.

I also never stated that they are real achievements. You make it sound like I was claiming they are some kind of ultimate challenge to tell your grand children one day. All I was trying to convey was that because you get achievement points, it should take a little bit of effort. Otherwise they might as well just give AP away in the Log In rewards.

The old system may have taken you more effort but I got the impression, from some of the posts in this thread, that many people did them during their normal play, and therefore required no effort.

You either want them to take more effort or you want them to take less effort. At the end of the day, how much effort it takes is not that important, and wasn’t the main crux of my post. What is important is the purpose of the dailies and whether they are achieving that. The new system is starting to achieve its goals, the old system wasn’t.

Simplicity is complex.

Good feedback is key to getting the developers to listen to you.

You know, you are right. I am limiting myself.

I’ll just hop into PvP matches I don’t want to be in, kitten around and be completely inept as I won’t know what to do or care, and generally drag down my team just to get dailies done faster. Not like I know how to fight other players, nor do I have any desire to learn as I don’t want to be there.

I’m sure everyone involved will enjoy that.

I’ve been doing the PvP thing now, not that I know what I’m doing or can ever win a fight in 1 vs 1 (cuz I’m awful at PvP). And such a pleasure to be hearing my teammates say, OMG my teammates are such noobs.

I very much dislike the lack of choices. For pve/wvw/pvp you are stuck with very few choices unless you do a combination of them. For example if you only like to do PVE you are stuck with maybe 3 out of 4 things you can do and 2 of them may be tedious and time consuming. (such as fractal runner and specific zone event completion)

Kinda comes off as them being a little desperate to get people to run them more.

You are aware that 3 is the only amount you need to complete the daily, right?

That’s awesome. Now I can be 2/3 of the way on completing the daily from doing just a single activity. Tonight is going to be a great night!

So I just logged in to find that one of my dailies is a level 21-30 fractal.
My personal reward level is currently 13 so why am I getting this as a daily?
Surely I shouldn’t be getting anything over 20 until my reward level reaches that, not to mention that apparently you need agony resistance of 25 for fractal 20-29 and at my fractal level I’ve only got 10.

Oddly enough, I had the exact same experience for the last two evenings. I have not logged on yet today.

As Vayne got me to admit a bit above this post, I’ll still craft some luck for the ectos, but the other rewards just don’t get me too fired up.

Yeah, this 2 fractals is a fail. No daily again today.
You must realize this is not going to force us to play content we don’t enjoy.
It will simply make us madder until we stop playing and spending money.

Gotta say thanks for the Christmas gift of tons of harvesting tools. I’m starting to wonder if I’ll use many though.

Oh, look. Double Fractals again. Once could have been dismissed as a bug. This, however, says design choice. To which I say, go kitten yourselves, ANet. Your kittenty content deserves to molder and die if this is how you think you ‘entice’ people to do it.

Yeah, I don’t enjoy fractals either (nor hamster-wheel maps like Dry Top and Silverwastes). No more GW2 for me today.

One man’s clever sig is most likely another man’s property.
And you may quote me on that.
