One thing that does bother me is people who adamantly believe not only that absolutely everything on Dulfy’s site is 100% correct at all times but also that if it’s not there it does not exist.

I’ve had bad experiences as a result of that attitude a few times. Most memorably I was doing the leyline energy events (the ones where you defend energy from dragon minions) on the day they were released – when Dulfy herself said she was still creating her guide and it may not be complete.

I found an event just starting, put my tag up and posted in map chat that it was happening…and got a torrent of abuse from some people who accused me of lying and trolling players – because the location I was at was not listed by Dulfy. Even after other players arrived and confirmed I was telling the truth, and someone pointed out the location was listed on the Wiki they simply would not accept that anyone, anywhere could possibly have found something Dulfy had not already told them about.

That kind of blind adherence to any one source of information is worrying, but it’s even worse when it makes someone regret trying to help. After that (and an unrelated bad experience with using a mentor tag “incorrectly”) I was extremely wary about tagging up for those events.

ok skipped most of the wall of text so i appologise if its been said already – but whats the difference between looking up something on dulfy and looking at wiki ? Ive ended up checking dulfy at times when ive been doing an achievement and struggled – often dulfy will have users stating that somethings will have multiple spawn spots – like the leyline things a few months back . Wiki said at the time 1 location where dulfy proved it was multiple locations – yes this may seem like cheating but when something can spawn in diff spots you still have to check each spot . Like others have probably said – if you dont want to know then no1 is forcing you to go to dulfy . Its YOUR own choice !!!! . Btw does anyone force players to visit build sites ? How comes we always see complaints regarding info on stuff yet barely anyone complains about build sites ? Infact doesnt wiki and dulfy both use players feedback on alot of info ? Remember most of wiki is written by players which has been stated by anet , somehow i dont think anet will pay staff just to be on wiki . Also i believe dulfy and anet do have a relationship based upon the april fools joke a year or 2 ago where both had an article about dulfy taking over wiki . You dont like something no1 is forcing you to like/use/visit , is anyone forcing you to play gw2 , anyone forcing you to complain ? Try complaining about the gold selling , sites that have bots etc coz i dont see dulfy affecting the game in any way thats bad – also im sure as hell theres many sites with same info but as dulfy is more popular her site is picked upon most. Besides all us dulfy fans/users will hunt you down in gw2 and snowball you to death – jk ( or am i ?? XD )

A lot of people are generalising either their own experience or their opinion on how other people play to all other players. For example: “People want everything to be served them and they want it yesterday.”, “People used to applaud this game for not holding your hand with giant quest markers over people’s heads in quest hub towns.” “If new Content Comes, everybody rushes all achievements and everything.”

I think it’s important to remember that “People” are not one uniform group who all want the same things at the same time. What one person wants is another persons nightmare situation, especially in a game.

Some people have previously praised the game for not making things too obvious, and they probably still enjoy that. Some people like it to be clearly communicated within the game and still would. Some people really couldn’t care less about the process, they just want their reward as fast as possible. Some people care about the process, but only because they hope it will slow down everyone else and then those people might be impressed that they have it. Some people like to use a player-created guide if they get stuck on a particular point. Some people like to watch a youtube tutorial before they even enter an area and then copy it exactly. Some people like to be the ones going in first and creating the guide.

I’m sure there’s dozens of other variants. And it may depend on context. When I heard there was a new jumping puzzle in Fractals I didn’t want to be told any more, I wanted to go and find it and work it out for myself. But if I hear there’s a new mini pet in the game I like to be able to look up exactly how to get it on the Wiki. (Mostly because past experience has told me JPs are permanent so I can find it and work it out in my own time but minis may be time-limited or much harder/more expensive later on so if it’s going to be difficult for me I need a plan in place now.)

Of course what this means is it’s impossible to please everyone with one approach. But in that context I think sites that provide walkthroughs are a good idea. That way if you want to work it out yourself you can do that without ever risking seeing a guide. And if you want to be told what to do, either in one part or in full, you can do that too.

the problem is people can’t do anything without dulfy anymore.

Maybe if the game itself gave decent clues, instead of usually no clues at all?

Like the one where you need to approach one of the anomalies to start off an achievement. After seeing them all this time it never would have occurred to me that now you approach one and now it does something. No prompt from the game. Nothing. If people didn’t tell others or if I hadn’t seen it from dulfy then I’d still not have that achievement chain started.

It’s funny you chose that to use as an example. This is probably the one aspect of the Current Events stuff I found out about without being told. (Well this and the posters.)

Before then the Anomaly had only appeared for a couple of seconds, barely enough time to hit the screenshot button. Then I saw one which stayed longer, so I started running towards it. I’m not sure what I was going to do (except maybe take a closer screenshot with the UI hidden), I just wanted to take the opportunity to investigate.

It still didn’t stick around for long, but as it disappeared I saw the achievement notification pop-up and that got me started on the mini ‘quest’.

Well, yes, obviously some people approached it or else the information that there was an achieve wouldn’t have been found out.

Your main interest here seems to have been a close up screen shot and happenstance curiosity. That’s not game related so much as personal interest related. People approaching because they want something like a screen shot and getting the achieve isn’t the same as the game giving players a clue, such as your char commenting about the anomaly which leads the player to stop and think. I feel it’s bad game design when it depends on players having random personal wishes to uncover achieves and then spreading the news rather than having an an game hint for people to figure it out. The first is random. The second is the game getting the players to think about the story.

In other words, I think it’s better for the game to give a hint so people can actively discover it through that, than it be discovered by random chance and someone happening to bump into it.

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

I like how Dulfy writes about upcoming weaponskins or gemshop items or so..
BUT :
why are they making an achievement guide and explain everything ?!
They are spoilering around and thats boring..
Why?!

Ahh Toasa you read the book before seeing the movie.

thats like playing a very difficult single player puzzle game and complaining, while you have a printed version of the walkthrough infront of you, that its too easy and straightforward.

Try having that logic around a raid.
You’d be laughed at, then kicked, then laughed at again.

Raids, the high-end, ‘difficult’ content, are researched endlessly by guilds and groups in order to get a successful, loot-filled run. Not just in GW2, but in every MMO ever. Only pre-release testers and first-day progression guilds do them as intended. Everyone else is addicted to that info, an entire culture of guide-goers.

Many alts; handle it!

The only difference is that Dulfy’s site is a personal website updated by 1 person (with information contributed by several others) and the Wiki is a community site that anyone can edit. There’s generally no difference in the information on each, although early on when articles are still being written there might be.

I prefer the way the Wiki is laid out and written, but that’s purely personal preference, I happen to find it easier to follow, other people prefer Dulfy’s site and I’m sure some don’t like either and prefer one I don’t know of.

the problem is people can’t do anything without dulfy anymore.

I suppose it’s just how different people approach things. I’m the kind of person who will always open every drawer in a hotel room because whilst past experience tells me there will either be a bible or nothing I want to check just in case it’s something else.

In games I’m even worse. Right at the start of one of the Zelda games you’re told to leave your house and turn right. So I turned left. Just to see what would happen, or if I even could (those games tend to be very restrictive early on). When I found out it let me I kept going and ended up wandering all around Hyrule without even a sword, just to see what would happen if I did.

Likewise I saw an Anomaly acting…anomalously and I ran towards it to see what would happen. The idea of taking a screenshot was at least partially retrospective, I was already on my way when that option occurred to me. I literally do not know what I was expecting, I just wanted to find out.

To me its hard to understand that other people don’t do that. I try to remember that thing which seem obvious to me because there was nothing stopping you from doing it are not at all obvious to someone else because there was nothing telling you to do it, but it’s hard to get yourself into a completely different mindset like that.

like what? iv never known her to do that

I only know these ones because I’ve seen people complain about them:

Cryptonym strongbox in TD. She tries to go over the branches, but you can simply take the updraft right around the corner.

Token #39 in EB. She tries to glide into the hole, but there’s an underwater cave, the same one used for #16, that leads right to it.
