Told my buddy he won't get world completion
…unless he server hops. He just got the game a week ago. His goal was to 100 percent the map. A justifiable goal, can be done with time. Until I told him how the map works in Eternal Battlegrounds.
He was actually quite frustrated. The server I’m on has been blue for the past month now with no signs of an actual color swap any time soon (we are going to be in this tier for a while at number 2). Eternal Battlegrounds is very defensive and our cluster is VERY competitive. Rarely, if ever, does one color actually take another colors keep. I’ve seen it happen once.
So, anet, any changes any time soon on this? What about random colors every week? No one cares if they are blue, red, green, supposedly the tactical advantage is the same. It would bring more people into WvWvW too as they would pop in for there vistas then maybe think its cool and stick around.
I feel even worse for those on servers that get stomped. They have zero chance to get world completion.
More regular colour swaps is a fine idea although I’m not sure it’ll solve all your problems.
But I agree with the larger point that making WvW count towards 100% explorer is a poor choice. It undermines WvW by having people run around collecting things instead of fighting, and it undermines the exploration gameplay by making explorer-types hang out in what is traditionally their least-favourite kind of content (PvP).
I had to swap to finally get world completion. I waited for a month on three points of interest and even tried to rally people on my world to take those points but it never changed hands. When it’s so much easier to swap why even bother trying to do it the right way?
Pretty soon changing servers to complete the exploration won’t be an option, because it will cost a significant amount of money. ArenaNet really does need to address this discrepancy. It should not be dramatically easier for some players to get world completion than others, simply because they decided to hop on the bandwagon and join a highly populated PvP-centric server.
ArenaNet seems to be wanting players to spread out and fill in the lower-population servers to balance things a bit better…but players are very unlikely to be willing to do that when there is so much disincentive to playing on the worlds that are lower in the rankings.
You told your buddy a lie that’ll hurt his enjoyment of the game. Actually, I don’t think this is about your buddy but about yourself but let’s not go there. Let’s quickly go over the options for world completion in WvWvW:
1/ Wait for it. In time, everyone gets every color. The completion is virtually guaranteed over time.
2/ Organize groups.
3/ Hop servers.
All three are just as valid as the others. All three work depending on the resources available (guild, skilled server, bit of color luck).
I used a combination or all. My guild conquered a few things I needed, a color change did most of the rest and I realized all I needed was within 1 server’s control so I hopped for the remaining 3 PoI’s.
Do not forget that 100% exploration is an end-game achievement and NOT intended to be easy. It’s also a required part of a legendary weapon, you should not take 100% for granted without at least some effort.

Someone who just got the game a week ago can take his/her time to fret about the wvw maps. Good counsel for non-wvw-players would be to watch the maps for good opportunities to fill it out.
In terms of game play, there’s not a lot of pvp-feeling to wvw.
There should be two achievements. One for 100% map completion in WvW and one for PvE.
Forcing someone who despises PvE or PvP into that environment to complete the same achievement is
ludicrous.
Last time I checked, this was a game. Games are supposed to be fun. But the moment you start
shoving PvE aspects down PvP players throats and vice versa, it suddenly becomes no fun at all.
Original Poster, you have mislead your buddy. When I went for WvW completion my server, Piken Square, was not doing very well. All it took is one day when our server pushed, and I finished 100% of all four WvW areas in one night, except for one bugged skill challenge I finished the next day.
It can seem intimidating to do the WvW completion before going in, but once you’re in it’s really not that difficult. Keeps and towers change ownership so often that an opportunity to complete their map assets show up eventually.
If I were on Piken I would have 100%, sadly I have one last poi to get in Anza which I haven’t seen my server Gunnar’s Hold cap for two weeks when I’ve been on. If anyone from Abbadons Mouth is on and wishes to sabotage this tower for me, I will give you a cookie
You could run around naked in hopes you’ll get a laugh out of the other side rather than a sword in your belly.
I didn’t say it was a GOOD workaround.
I’ve been waiting for 2 weeks to complete the map. Stuck at 99%
The problem I see with WvWvW is..well..I once entered, ran around grabbing all these points. Then I thought to myself—hey, I’m contributing exactly ZERO to the team!
Teams should get some kind of award for people exploring. Maybe items/achievements can be turned in for boosts in your team, or reduced repair costs (or NPC aid), a la Alterac Valley.

Got my world completion this past weekend. Been at 99% for well over and month. The last vista I needed was in the Durios fort in EB. I decided just to make up some strategic merits of taking that spot when we had SM, a commander took the bait and steered the zerg in that direction. Them, and a little help from my guild and I finally got my star.
Could have gotten it a long time ago by server hopping to the blue team on any given week. But I didn’t on principle. Transfers have caused too many issues game wide for me to jump on that train instead of being patient.
Unless your goal is making a Legendary and the only thing left you need to complete the recipe is the gift of the traveler…just get it the right way. It will be much more satisfying.

I had the same problem with my World Completion. I’m on Aurora Glade [EU] and we haven’t been on blue for at least a month and a half, just switching between green and red every week. After 2 weeks of waiting I decided to just get a ram blueprint and go for Langor Gluch which was the last Point of Interest I was missing. The thing about that keep is that is the closest possible tower to the blue base. Is even closer than the closest keep. I’ve been lucky that noone was inside trying to protect it and the 4-5 people who were with me were enough to stop all the small groups who tried to stop us from taking down the gate.
But yeah, some randomness for server color in WvW is needed.
If your buddy were someone who was level 80 and wanted their 100% map completion nao, then yes, I’d agree that the best (and maybe only) solution would be to hop servers. But someone who just got the game last week has PLENTY of time to work on those WvW maps and as mentioned above, there are additional options at their disposal. When you have time (or patience) on your side, you have more options available to you with the WvW map completions.
That said, I 100% agree that the server colors should be regularly rotated instead of the current system so no one server gets stuck on any particular color.

I don’t mind so much that they wanted people to have a look in WvW but the central fort in EB will never be taken by some servers.
It would’ve been better of the POIs and Vistas wouldn’t require owning specific forts.
I had to hop servers to complete mine. Took about a week.
You also need to find a server that dominates WvW to be successful.
I agree that it can be done with perserverance without transferring, but I also agree that it shouldn’t need to be.
I just finished the achievement this weekend as well, by going on WvW and getting the points when I could, over the course of a month. Eventually, I was down to a single POI and vista in a single keep that we just hadn’t held any of the times I was on (or held when I got in, then lost before I could get there- that happened twice). After another week of checking back every couple of hours, I was finally able to get it.
Despite the great feeling of accomplishment in finally achieving Been There, Done That, I disagree with the achievement needing the WvW maps. I think they should be separated out.
Tying PVP and PVE achievements is a colossal mistake. All it does is piss off the pve players by forcing them to pvp and then the pvp get hosed with a bunch of players who have no interest in pvp, simply running around looking to finish achievements so they can bail.
WoW has this issue and still isn’t fixed. Every event cycle people join BG’s for achievements, then bail 2 minutes in or once they complete them.
I did all the maps in my server, no jumps.
~Piken Square~
I agree also pvp maps should be separated for exploration purposes, but even in gw1 to get the Cartographer title, you had to go to all pvp areas and had to switch sides from Luxon to Kurzick and vice versa to complete areas like Fort Aspenwood and Jade Quarry. However those were somewhat easier as basically you just switched sides and fought for that side to discover the areas, while in wvw the keeps and forts are held by enemies and they have to be defeated to gain entry.
Also in gw1 there were no poi, vistas sp’s etc only actual map discovery but it was still very hard as you had to cover every inch of the map and skirt right along all the edges, in order for it to be revealed. So many times, I literally had to walk into walls to get that small spot missing. Good ol gw1, I loved that game hehe.
It will get even worse soon the free transfers will stop and they will be paid or some off limits until populations stabilize and reset.
I am doing the map comp on my toon and 90% of the time going around I am alone everywhere and things dont look good. Just happy that as an 80 I can still own even if I have to put on my exotic to fight through some of the events. Otherwise I might just give up and move on.
I’m confused. Where does it call explorer a PvE achievement. Is it labeled that way somewhere I’m overlooking?

It’s 98% PvE. The PvP portion is a massive kittenblock. That’s the issue being discussed. But you knew that.

So hopping servers makes it less easy and means that you earnt it? Im not trying to flame ( i have friends that swapped servers due to this) , I have no issues about it being earnt or even hard to obtain, but to obtain just it because the abilty to change server is there kind of demeans the whole process.
I personally hate WvW but i do have 99%, if i want that coverted little star next to my name i had to “suck it” as they say, but waiting til you server changes colour or sitting up til 4am in hope that the night cappers get your PoI’s attainable really makes this one of the more pointless titles there is atm.
I’l sit at 99% now because tbh 100% means nothing anymore. If this was to get the PvE’ers into WvW then it failed in my case since its all about my “gang” being bigger than your “gang”.

In other words, you made the decision yourself.
It’s not that ANet have given us a PvE achievement, it’s that they’ve given us an achievement which you feel should only apply to your playstyle.
in the list of developers I have the least faith & trust in.
Congratulations ArenaNet!
I finished all the WvW zones in about two weeks with out server hopping, but I can appreciate that this may be a lot easier on some servers than on others. (Two weeks, but only sporadic participation during those two weeks).
I always queued up for WvW when I logged in and once I got over there , I would look for any map points I needed that were controlled by my server. Usually, if there were no points I needed, I would queue for the next zone. I’d go through this maybe once a day, I wasn’t constantly visiting WvW through out an entire game’s worth of play, I just made a point to try to check each zone at least once a day.
The last few points took the longest, but as I said, I managed to complete all four zones in about two weeks.
I agree that there should be some mechanism to try to maximize color shifts for each server. I also think that exploration is just one more reason why we would probably be better off with weekly matches, rather than the originally intended two weeks.
Something like 100% map completion should be considered a long term goal. Getting frustrated that it may take weeks, or even months in some cases, seems a little pointless to me. Heck, even though I finished the Mists exploration, I still haven’t gotten 100% world completion on any character in almost 500 hours of play because I’m taking my time enjoying the world in an organic manner, rather than obsessing over completion of the achievement. (I feel the same way about Legendaries as well. If I get mine by the end of the first year, I’ll be happy).

Then allow me to explain further.

Assuming your reply, which quoted the earlier post, was actually a reply thenyou must be stating that your belief that the achievement is 98% PvE makes it a PvE achievement.
If anything, it shows that it’s not a PvE achievement, if it were it would be 100% PvE based. Since it’s not, it must not be a PvE achievement.

Swapping servers to get 100%, lol that’s the dumbest thing I have ever heard.
Maybe you could play the game and actually earn your achievements ? I can’t believe how lazy people are these days.
Why’s there such a rush to get the achievement within 2 weeks?
I never server hopped, and took my time. I kept an eye on how my server was doing in WvW, and when they captured any walled structure I didn’t have, I’ll hop in and grab it.
As for non-walled structures, it’s simple enough to sneak around and nab it. It took me about 3 months to complete on 2 chars, but it can be done. Just takes time.
