Hello everyone,
I started Guild Wars 2 in the early release with everyone. I was immediately turned off and it was a struggle for me to play. The thing that made the game for me personally was the classes. Each class has actual mechanics that are different instead of just spells. Its amazing. My mesmer had 4 different phantom related spells, while the engineer has a different spell for whatever your using(you get the point). I ended up hitting like….maybe level 59 on my mesmer(cant remember off the top of my head). I really want to get back into the game given the loyal fan base. The game gets a lot of backlash but I do see some sort of unexplainable good quality to the game. I had a few things that sort of ruined my personal experience ill list below. I guess if maybe I could get ideas or tips on how to make these things more enjoyable. Sometimes I wonder if I played this game “right” tbh.

1)The “living world”- My initial complaint were the supposed “dynamic events”. Defend it if you want, I wont cause a fight but I found these extremely unoriginal and boring. At least there are always quests in normal mmos. I found that these were basically quests with timers that you have to repeat. I would complete hearts and do some events along the way and still be behind in levels. The entire process was confusing me and a complete miss for my personal play style.

2)The PvP- The thing with PvP was that I did not get experience for battlegrounds….extremely discouraging for me. I didnt care for the WvWvW too much either. It would take me a while to find groups, and when I did I would die in the massive fights easily and then would just repeat the process of searching for everyone.

3)This one is more of a current concern. I hear the story is great, but how am I supposed to know whats going on? I didnt even listen to the story quests on launch (I know, shame on me). I am willing to restart as a new character if I can get back into the story.

So these were primarily my issues. I am not claiming any of them to be facts, they are merely my perceptions. Is there anything you guys think I went about wrong or could do differently to enhance my experience in GW2? Like I said before, I see a certain quality to this game that makes me want to like it.

Thanks for reading! I know it was a long post but I could just use some input.

i will say start a easy class to play
you try mesmer before but its a dam hard class to enjoy and you rely must be a skilled player to no him good also in WvW ore any other pvp areas

ranger is very good ( Ad last btw )
its also a easy class to relax and solo easy with a good pet beside you
like a bear pet can easy tank for you with out trouble that you will die fast

let him do the work and you just pew pew with a long bow

also i recommend for you if you wanna try some pvp
To go to the Edge of the mist

its a smaller area then world vs world also a good training for you to do some pvp experience try to find the commander there and follow the zerg train

and for story ea race have a different 1 try to relax and read it all
for me Norn are great i rely like there style its old fashion

there hunters and they like to tell story’s and drink allot of beer XD
and the area is all snow and nature and they love animals

i hope it helps a little

and sorry for the broken English

Haha, np about the English bro. I really appreciate the response. It definitely makes me want to play, but that didnt really address exactly what I was looking for. By battlegrounds I meant Edge of mists not giving xp.

I’ll second the “Don’t start with a Mesmer” advice. They’re one of the hardest classes to work with, and they’re pretty awful until you get well up there in traits. They may be awesome once you have them fully developed, but until then you’d be better off starting with something simpler.

I would strongly suggest just starting an entirely new character. They’ve revamped the lower levels to make them teach the game better. While not all of us agree on if they succeeded or not, it’s worth it to run through them as a refresher. It may help you to get past whatever problems you had.

Easy classes for PvE are warrior and ranger. Ranger is actually good for just about everything but dungeons, but I feel I should warn you that the pet provides a pretty big margin for error. Lots of people that focus on rangers are “sloppy” when it comes to more demanding content, such as dungeons or bosses that can quickly kill the pets.

Other than that, I’d say to just make someone new and jump in. What have you got to lose, after all? You’ve already paid for it.

[Edit] As for EXP in PvP? You won’t get it there, but you now pick a “Reward Track” that you earn your way along as you play (wining moves you faster, but you still advance even if you keep losing). You will get an occasional tome from these rewards that will give +1 level to the character that uses it.

Sarcasm, delivered with a
delicate, brick-like subtlety.

Your first mistake was probably playing mesmer as a first character. Mesmer is more difficult than most classes, and levelling a mesmer is known to be a pain. I even joke about it with my guild. Definitely try a different class. I would suggest ranger, since I think it is a giant heap of fun.

Another suggestion is to find a guild. Every game is more fun with friends.

As for being behind in levels, they have changed the levelling system dramatically. Since you don’t really have much experience with the game I would suggest just playing through the game at your own pace. This is not a game where you rush to level 80. Stop and smell the roses sometimes. Or stop and gather the blueberries, same thing.

Edge of the Mists does give XP. You can level up extremely fast by finding the little dorito (commander) on the map and following him/her while completing events.

If you need help, feel free to add me.

i really like the dynamic events but they are only good for exploring open world at random.. arena net’s solution is, well.. we have really big ones and we’ll tell you when they pop up… ummm, o k.. other mmo’s have used the time proven method of quests, there’s something to do you go do it.. had fun, Done.. maybe do it again later.. actually other mmo’s have improved on it so it’s less daunting.. gw2 has personal story.. you Have to play that race and go through the missions like a gamebook which is cool because it is somewhat non-linear for awhile.. but we all end up killing zombey dragon.. then we battled a saturday morning cartoon supervillain for a year and the astounding mystery was that an Extra dragons war general converged her army against {insert green light somewhere} lions arch.. who wouldn’t feel intellectually engaged at this point?

it seems you had a hard time getting into the profession you chose.. i enjoyed my first profession choice but have had a difficult time building on others.. again, most regular mmo’s try to offer a variety of choices while keeping each one equal or at least relevent to the grand scheme of the game.. i really don’t know if it is pvp or what the influence was, but this game seemed to be oriented toward bubblegum balance.. if you didn’t have a high sentimental value for your character or weren’t comfortable with rolling a flavor of the month then i can’t imagine many mmo players sticking with gw2.. even weapon choice in other mmo’s can leave your character less specialized, but in this one it can put you in a place of being completely irrelevant.

sorry for starting out negative, there are more issues with the game the deeper you get into it.. i think i addressed ones that were relevant to topic.. the best thing to do to enjoy the game is to figure out small goals available to your character.. don’t take it too seriously and try to find people willing to help out.. when you are level 80 you can purchase season 2 storyline missions or do dungeons, broaden the content you involve yourself in etc.

i can outswim a centaur!
when i’m done on an issue
i start talking in nerglish

Hmm, thanks for all of these excellent responses! Definitely making me think of rerolling as a new character. Ik I am getting a lot of advice regarding the mesmer, but allow me to kind of say I disagree. The mesmer is actually the only thing I did enjoy the first time I played. The class was awesome! I learned combos after watching about two hours of youtube videos and read many guides. Its not easy, but the combos/theme is what kept me into the game even 59 levels later. I actually had an initial 19 level run with the thief before quitting. A couple weeks later, I made my mesmer. I wont claim to be an expert by any means, but I will say I think I had the mesmer figured out. It was more or less the events and pvp that kind of caused me to leave. I really do appreciate the warm and friendly responses though. Makes me think this game might have an excellent community still
