They weren’t.

It’s as simple as that.

Seriously, if you couldn’t get to 80 in GW2, you probably couldn’t turn on the computer without assistance either.

I have two friends who bought the game and never made it to level cap.

-One said it wasn’t as good as WoW and went back to playing that.

-One thought the leveling process would be similar to guild wars 1 and didn’t want to spend the time to level.

Both had clearly played mmos before so maybe this update wasn’t targeted at them despite them not reaching level cap. However I can say that this update would have made them less likely to reach 80 for whatever that is worth.

I.. am Done. This game is messed up. I don’t have any reason to support or advertise this game to friends or other gamers anymore. Every argument I could use to advertise GW2 has now gone out the window.

Meh. I’ve said this before, but I’m still waiting for them to just drop the level cap to 20. Max stats could stay the same as now, but you’re guaranteed something interesting every level. Add some mid-level perks to give players a regular pat on the back, and you’re set.

I should be writing.

Unfortunately for me, and I assume many other players, the leveling system is just too boring. Tutorials have no effect on that. I had to force my way to 80 and I just don’t see how I can do that a second time. Grinding repetitive tasks until a bar slowly fills up, following a wvw zerg for hours, spending your gold powerleveling crafting. I did all these things to get to 80 and it felt like it took forever.

I’ve done it 7 times now – and I know LOTS of people have done it twice as much as that.

You know what they should do?

Remove leveling altogether.

Keep the experience bar, but everyone starts at “80” (just call it zero – or don’t call it anything at all), and just like when you are “80” currently, each “level” (each time you fill the experience bar) you get to CHOOSE a skill point, or a trait point, or unlock something (like a weapon skill).

Basically, every XP bar you fill gives you 1 thing, whether that’s a skill unlock or a point of some sort (trait or skill).

Make all the enemies the same level (which is kinda what happens once you hit 80 anyway, due to ‘downleveling’) just make them easier or harder depending on where they’re found (i.e., later areas with more challenging enemies, earlier areas with less challenging enemies).

There’s really no need for levels at all – it’s an obsolete concept, and a complete waste of time – especially in this game.

We only play to see the content – why gate it behind “levels”? It’s a stupid concept.

and then theyfail even at that.

I suspect the problem in that regard is that WoW mostly knew what it was from the start and even though it went through some changes, it never really stopped being WoW.

Whereas these other games keep trying to be different and escape the WoW hate, only to realize down the road that the demographic for “different” is just not big enough, comparatively. Which puts them in a nasty identity-crisis-causing situation.

Or words to that effect.
