MY best is thief, while MY worse is probably warrior.

Player skill and having a build that suits your playstyle are massive deciding factors in this game. A lot of people claim that necros are bad and eles are good. And while for the majority of players that might be true, that is not necessarily true for everyone.

People find Mesmers bad in PvP, but I have seen some very skilled mesmers out there. It is all down to your skill and playstyle, and whether you have found a build for your chosen profession that suits you perfectly. If you haven’t, then you will find that profession weak.

The question you should be asking is: Which profession is most desired, by the majority of players, and which is least desired? If you want to know which is strongest and which is weakest, only you can find that out. All we can do is offer advise, based on what you enjoy and what your capabilities are, in order to find a profession and build that might suit you.

Simplicity is complex.

Good feedback is key to getting the developers to listen to you.

From a purely usefulness and popularity perspective across gametypes.

Best = Ele
Worst = Necro

From a purely design, synergy and implementation perspective (trait/utility creativity and synergy etc). Ignoring relative usefulness and popularity.

Best = Ele
Worst = Necro

Its a little upsetting as someone who wants necros to be good. However aesthetically necros are the best. Although thats a matter of opinion. :<

I have been playing my Mesmer in PvP and have not had many issues to be honest. I routinely get near top of the totem pole and can win almost any duel. No class is good if they are constantly getting Dazed from anyone one of 3-4 sources . Further more, Mesmers are difficult to keep targeted with multiple forms of fast invis, or decoys.

A good mesmer can be good. Can they get into serious business on a world tourney team? I do not know. All I know is when playing my ranger its a lot less work for me kills.

You don’t understand that by joining a zerker group with your “tank” necro or whatever you’re killing them. They died because you can’t pull your weight. How many times does this have to be stated? Zerker set up in prolongued fights = dead. Not for all encounters, but for a lot of them that is true. Nobody is forcing you to join zerker groups. Make a new group, tank necro only, and have fun.

I’m sorry but you are wrong. If someone in ’’tank’’ gear join a zerker group, he’s only killing them if they are bad. If they need to kill the enemies super quick otherwise they will die that mean that they don’t know the encounter well enough to stay alive over long period of time or that they can’t adapt their strategy with the group they have. It’s ok to don’t want to play with ’’tank’’ players, I don’t want either, but don’t blame them for your death. You don’t want to put the extra effort to become better and be able to survive in prolongued fights in zerker gear, that’s fine. Kick ’’tank’’ player because you ask for zerker only, but don’t blame them for your death.

We duo and solo in zerker gear and we don’t die, so if you die because 1 tank joined your party, you really only have yourself to blame.

Hey, if you enjoy it, play it.

My mains are Mesmer and Necro, which are nowhere near the top, but I enjoy them Could always level a more useful job on the side just to have something for dungeons/pvp/whatever floats your boat.

I’m pretty sure you can objectively conclude Elementalist is the “Best” and Necromancer is the “worst” across the game. Mesmers and rangers also have their issues, but globally, Necromancer suffers the most I’d say.

Ele are the best but it has some friends up there.

Why do you think everyone joining pugs is going to have a clue?
Why do you think I am in tank gear?

Just curious…so were you instead playing dagger/dagger, max DPS, with full zerker armor and trinkets when you were the last one alive against the boss you mentioned?

That ‘I was the last in group to kill the boss and everyone else was dead’ is the most biased experience those PVT/Nomad whatever players can have: be cause the group consists of 2-3 weak PVT/Nomad players the zerkers will die since the damage is not enough to kill the boss quickly. A friend and me had a guild run in CoE the other day and exactly that what happened: 3 of the group did next to no damage and we constantly died be cause it took so long to kill the bosses. It was horrible. Luckily, the next run was with other zerkers and it was about 10 times faster…

There is no best and worst profession in Guild Wars 2. They are all fairly balanced right now. Sure, there are certain builds that could do with minor tweaks, dare I say nerfs, to certain aspects of them, e.g., Warrior regeneration sustain through Healing Signet, Adrenal Health, Regen and/or Shout heals, as well as a Celestial Elementalist’s healing output with their Signet of Restoration, Regen and so on forth. The Ranger’s Lick Wounds in Downed State has needed a nerf since launch too, with the healing not being close to 15% per tick for one, and at the very least not resuming instantly after you interrupt the pet, without the Ranger needing to activate Lick Wounds again.

But overall, including those things mentioned just now, the professions are in a good state right now, and it’s mainly inexperienced players with a tunneled vision and typically poor understanding of what a profession can actually do, when played by a skilled player, that thinks a specific profession is bad for whatever purpose you wish to use it for.

Play what you wish to play, get good at it, enjoy the game. Ignore the players who thinks you are playing a bad profession, should you not play the popular flavor of the month for that particular month. Again, there is no best and worst profession. Just better and worse players and varying skill required for different professions. Warrior is perhaps the easiest to play of the bunch, and can carry a mediocre player into performing well. Guardian a close second, though it requires a bit more skill. One of the hardest to get good at is Mesmer. To learn, Engineer and Elementalist. And so on forth. But these opinions will vary from player to player.

I’m obviously right though, as are everyone else within their own opinions. Yup.

This is about general PvE experience, not meta party, rather personal guild experiences with rather speedy runs (usually Zerker blabla):

There are best and worst of course. And there are personal preferences. As one who plays all classes and one who doesn’t like to have too much work to be effective it comes down to this:

Good with less effort: Warrior, Ranger, Guardian
Good with a lot of effort: Elementalist, Engineer, Thief
Average with less effort: Necro, Mesmer

That said: Necro is the only group player who does not too much to help the party. The damage though is not too bad if you are geared well and know how to use it. The mesmer and thief have good utility and can be great in certain situations. If you are a great Engineer, you can pull off a lot of the thief’s utility though.

Best all-round professions that can do something really well in all game modes:
Warrior
Guardian
Ele

Professions that are uneven and/or have design issues:
Ranger
Necro
Mesmer

That said, every profession is viable for everything in the game and has something unique and powerful about them, largely a matter of finding one you find fun (which can be difficult with the way Anet has leveling set up for people just starting the game).

I have no opinion on this, but I would like to compliment you on the perfect choice of words in your explanation. This is a school book text example of how to be constructive in replying to other peoples questions. Seriously, most posts regarding PvP always read as if the poster is a top 10 PvP player. That cannot seriously be true, there cannot be hundreds of top 10 players.

The class which is best or worst clearly is bound to your personal playstyle and abilities. When I started using an MMO mouse with 12 thumb buttons, necro suddenly became a playable class for me. It is top notch in larger WvW groups, as it is sturdy and can drop a heavy amount of damage, the boons come from your allies.

In PvP in the ranking regions I usually play in my power necro build is extremely strong, I hardly ever lose a 1v1. But – that’s not the most important thing for PvP. Being successful is much more bound to understanding what is necessary to win a Conquest match. If you don’t get that, no class will be best whatsoever.

There may be a best or worst class for a specific situation if you compare them when played in an optimal manner, for the vast majority of players that is not an important information since we’re not going to play optimal anyways.

My personal most liked is somewhere between warrior, necro and guardian, my least liked is ele or engi. They just don’t fit my personal abilities well.

Anyone seen a necro minion zerg in wvw?, aurora glade server started this a long time ago we zerged with minion necros and melted anything including gates without siege, other zergs, anything. Tank necrosa with pets out and marks is totally insane, also as Ballads has mentioned if you glass up on necro you can do stupid damage, if you do a raid build with wells you can do stupid amounts of damage/cc.

Necros are a class that people might snear at but i’ll tell you, for those of us in the know, we just giggle back

Instead of being in tank gear, of course. I thought the questions of whether you were melee, full zerk, and max DPS would have made that obvious. Sorry for not being more clear. I was merely trying to understand your point. Since it is not unusual in pugs for someone running a tanky build to be the last one standing in a boss fight if running with four other full dps builds, this is probably why the other poster assumed you were tanky in zerk groups. You did not specify in your response whether this was the case or not so I sought clarification. Necros being naturally survivable (due to high health pool and death shroud) coupled with running ranged weapons seems to be a possible explanation for why you have seen the phenomenon you mentioned. And of course skill level is always important. Pugs are a crap shoot so it isn’t all that unusual for one good player to get stuck in a group with others who are not so good. A necro can be a good class to carry groups like that as I am sure you have seen. Thanks for the clarification and again, sorry for not being more clear.

It’s not that some classes need nerf. It’s that other classes need buff. Like necros, mesmers or rangers.

ANet probably doesn’t like to buff due to power creep, though they did buff ranger (longbow) recently and it is pretty strong now in WvW. Mesmer has been nerfed many times since the game’s beginning, so I won’t hold my breath waiting for buffs, though it really needs some. Good thing I’m an alt-aholic and play everything.

Imo, necro does need a buff in PvE. The problem with this is that they are so strong in WvW. But there are several things they could do to help necros in PvE. A buff to daggers’ range would be one nice thing. Also, giving them more group support of some kind would be a huge plus for their desirability for dungeons. Just throwing out random (and possibly overpowered) thoughts, maybe some buffs to wells would be an improvement? What if well of power pulsed stability and/or well of darkness destroyed missiles? This might give necro some of the utility that guards and mesmers currently have in dungeons. Of course it might hurt mesmers even more than they have already been hurt. Guardians are so useful and welcome in groups that it’s hard to imagine anything hurting their desirability.

Why don’t some people just give answers to the classes that are weak to something and strong to something? I don’t understand why there are some people in every game that feel the need to say that there are no strong or weak classes, it’s just what you enjoy the most and how you play them. They know that’s not entirely true but they say it anyways for what ever reason.

I don’t know the answer to your question because I’m still new but I assure you that some classes outshine others in certain areas of the game.

D/D Elementalist takes no skill but is good at everything in the game.
Mesmer is unfun to play against and does everything better than thieves.

You don’t know me, and like you said yourself you’re still new to the game, so I really don’t know how you can make such claims.

Some professions are easier to create builds for, for the majority of players, than other professions, therefore they tend to stand out as the strongest. But the fact is they can all be strong, in every part of the game. You just need the right player to create a suitable build for the profession that best fits with their playstyle.

Simplicity is complex.

Best and worst in terms of what?

In PvE physical damage is the way to go due to the limiting nature of conditions from multiple sources. People find it good enough to use the available active defenses (dodge, evades, protection, etc.) in PvE and just spec all zerker. This is considered optimal over other builds. However this is between builds and not professions.

On the other hand, some professions are perferred in certain situations because of what they bring to the table. A thief’s SR can be great at bypassing mobs in dungeons. Guardian bring a bunch of buffs and are often seen in dungeon parties as well as WvW. I’m not that familiar with sPvP to comment. Warriors also have a strong presence in dungeons and WvW alike.

In terms of build, I already covered zerker in PvE. In WvW it depends. Condi build is seen a lot in WvW. Condi builds can give you the best of both. Good damage (~1k – 3k condi ticks) while also providing good survivability (toughness and vitality). Condi clensing comes from skills, traits, food, runes, and sigils. Condi sources tend to be more plentiful and on shorter CD than clenses. Thus a condi build has little compromise while physical damage builds tend to have to compromise more between damage and survivability.

There is a rock paper scissors relationship between every prof with every other prof. Necromancer’s typically should destroy Warrior’s, but lose to Guardian’s for example. Mesmer’s typically don’t have a lot of problems with either one, but generally run away from most ranged profession’s very quickly. It’s how you play your class and what you are fighting that determines whether or not you are “The best profession” for the scenario or situation you are in.
