Most set gear is highly impractical and lead to further balance related issues than they are worth.

What is it you like about set gear? Chances are there’s an equivalent in GW2, it’s just done in a slightly different way. Here’s a few examples based off what I know as ‘set gear’ in other games:

Stat bonuses for matching pieces
Runes: You can apply sets of runes which give bonus stats and effects based on how many matching ones you use, up to a maximum of 6.

Themed appearance
Pretty much every armor skin (and a lot of the weapons) are part of a matching set, and many of them have a distinct theme. For example all of the Sorrow’s Embrace armor has a sort of industrial/steam punk look whereas the Ascalon Catacombs sets are more of a traditional fantasy look.

Collecting sets
There’s less examples for this, but it’s gotten better since HoT. There are a few sets you collect by doing a variety of events and other tasks in an area (like the carapace and luminescent sets) and of course the dungeon ones which come from earning tokens through dungeon runs.
