Why are forum post titles limited to 45 chara
Titles couldn’t be much longer and still fit on one line. I fooled around with the page HTML/CSS to make some example images, which helps show how full you could pack a line.
Since the forum doesn’t use a monospace font, some titles are going to require more space than others, and you have to consider leaving enough room for a lock icon. The forum seems to be extra cautious about trying to keep titles displayable, but as a designer, I have to be sympathetic to the problem.
Either way, it’s unlikely to change, since Anet no longer has a relationship with the person(s) responsible for the forum software. (Unfortunately!)
See, I couldn’t even finish this fricking title!
Like, seriously, why? I can understand some limit, but 45 is way too small.
Titles are supposed to be just titles, short description of what the post is about. You’re not supposed to put the whole post into the title.
For example
Title: Forum post titles too short
Text: Why are forum post titles limited only to 45 charcters? I really wish they would be longer! continue…
Because brevity is a skill. Practice it.
I wonder what your basis for comparison is…”

So much this!

Like most forums for most companies:
- ANet hired a 3rd party to build the forum (since it’s not a core competency of a gaming company).
- The 3rd party customized the forum software to fit ANet’s specific needs (moderators, secure login, etc.)
- The 3rd party no longer has a contract with ANet (they might have gone out of business, not uncommon for that niche).
- It’s no longer possible to make seemingly minor changes, without redoing lots of the underlying code.
In any case, the forums work perfectly fine…they just suffer a few odd quirks (the same ones I’ve seen on other forums, supposedly run by much better-funded corporations).

But titles should be brief. They should encapsulate the content of the post, even in a general terms, such as “feedback on Season 2” or “Suggestions for Gliders.”
Not so great: My Adventures on a Deserted Island as the Result of Being Thrown Into the Sea When My Ship Had an Unfortunate Incident
Far better: Shipwrecked
You can post your thoughts in detail in the body of the thread, but the title should be concise and representative of the content of the post.
While we’re on the subject: Try “My feedback on [subject]” instead of speaking in absolutes. The suggested title is better because “This sucks” or “This is the best thing since sliced cheese” are, after all, entirely subjective.

I happen to run in to problems like this. Just need to shorten the title a bit. Ultimately Gaile and the first response summed this up well.
