What MMOs are you playing that punish you for failing? Are you still playing EQ? Because that is the only game I can remember severely punishing someone for failing. I thought we graduated from that age of gaming.

What age of gaming is that? What game does not punish you for failing, forcing you to restart a sequence, locking you out of an instance, forcing you to wait an hour or more between repeats or whatever else? Are you seriously implying that failing in a video game should not have any consequences whatsoever?

And that aside, I seriously doubt you are hit by DR by just repeating a quest chain. If you do make an effort to cheese through any other DE that you can find in the meantime however, yeah, thats probably why.

I like how people say “play the game normally” but have no idea at all how hard it is to get their hands on things like “Powerful Vials of Blood” with only 1 legitimate spot to attain said item in the game.

I made another level 80 just to get by the DR. I want to play the game how I want to play it. If I want to try to go for my exotics or legendary items through farming specific “best drop” areas then how am I playing the game incorrectly? One would argue that I’m actually playing the game properly by maximizing my playtime with going for the specific drops I need.

(Please don’t ban me mods.)

Replying and quoting now seems to be bugged.

Just because a player isn’t being affected by DR doesn’t mean that their is not a bug in the system. Everytime ANet “fixes” DR, we find out that there’s still bugs affecting players.

There are pleanty of examples on these boards, as well as lengthy videos, spreadsheets and screenshots over on the Reddit Boards (where you may get downvoted but you won’t have your post deleted).

My personal experience is logging in. Hitting three DIFFERENT events, maybe killing a few things as I’m running down the road and then bam, being hit with DR – and not on one character – on my entire account.

There is way too much griping on the boards, and too many bugs still floating around for me to think well gee, this is all made up. It’s not perception, it’s happening.

The outcry is because ANet is being completely silent on the matter.

I don’t suppose you can add some links? I keep searching Youtube and I simply can not find any. I put “diminishing returns” in my GW2 search and nothing relevant comes back. You would think that would be included in the video title/tags.

No argument here. This is not the case with the DR system however. Outside of bugs, it comes down in conditions that are pretty easy to nail down and pretty easy to determine why it is so.

There are pleanty of examples on these boards, as well as lengthy videos, spreadsheets and screenshots over on the Reddit Boards (where you may get downvoted but you won’t have your post deleted).

There are? Never have I saw them posted here then. Especially videos. Most of the examples given here usually include claiming that someone does 15 events in an hour from beginning to end and totally does not run off somewhere else, which is not possible with how the events are laid out and how long they take even with massive swarms doing that.

Not even touching credibility of reddit here, not the object of the discussion anyway.

My personal experience is logging in. Hitting three DIFFERENT events, maybe killing a few things as I’m running down the road and then bam, being hit with DR – and not on one character – on my entire account.

And if that is really the case, then it is a bug. Again, not the major gripe reported in most of the threads I’ve seen.

There is way too much griping on the boards, and too many bugs still floating around for me to think well gee, this is all made up. It’s not perception, it’s happening.

No relevance to the topic at hand. It works the other way around too, just because some other things are bugged does not mean everything else is by default.

The outcry is because ANet is being completely silent on the matter.

Because revealing the mechanics of the system makes it irrelevant to both purposes it serves (event cheesing without contributing and botting). Not going to happen.

The problem is that there are a few issues being discussed at the same time.

DR in general
Bugs with DR

These are two separate issues that are mixed up time and again.

Also the stand point of Anet on this has been clear. They have addressed it. The fact that you don’t like their answer and are not responding to each additional thread about yet again the same stuff only indicates that people have issues, not that Anet is silent.

They made their statement, what more is there to say? If there are bugs then report them. Then you can see where that takes you.

But nothing will be accomplished by starting another 10 threads about the same subject, not because Anet didn’t answer but because you didn’t like the answer…that’s also two separate things.

It’s a game forum. The truth is not to be found here.

If you move around and fight different mobs in different areas you will not have DR or not as severe as people think it is. As per waypoint costs, you are making plenty more then them in these events so yea, use em.

Also, the game isn’t about farming, why not just do something else with the 40 minutes. Although I don’t see how you get DR within 20 it usually takes about a an hour.

I’d love to see a youtube video of someone playing the game “normally” and still hitting diminishing returns. Whenever there’s a thread like this, it’s natural to wonder what exactly the person making the complaint is doing “wrong” or what actions they’re taking that are triggering DR.

My point being, showing a video of someone playing normally/reasonably and then having their gameplay wrecked by diminishing returns 20 minutes into it would definitely gain some support for the supposed problem fairly easily.

Otherwise, without some sort of visual proof you’re probably going to leave people feeling unsympathetic because they’re picturing you gaming the system in some ridiculous manner (and getting bitten back by it).

Just a suggestion.

Pretty much this.

I won’t come right out and say you’re lying when you say, “I’ve been playing normally and hitting diminishing returns”. I’m just asking you to PROVE IT. Post a video (without parts cut out) showing “normal” game play with DR being triggered. I would really, REALLY like to see that.

I have not seen these diminishing returns in MY “normal” gameplay, so I’m really curious what’s different about YOUR normal gameplay that causes it to trigger.

It’s probably people with magic find sets, boosters and magic find food, seems you get hit pretty hard then.. or so I hear. That said, I’ve had it happen with just food doing the long chains in Orr.

Lol, if you get DR in 14 mins its a bug. I know it sucks to have a whole night of play ruined, but you are in a small minority and your stories are being taken as DR working as intended when it is not.

Considering this game is reliant on people farming to get the better gear, then no DR should be implemented for players, the pro Anet brigade need to come off their high horses and stop sucking up.

“Hey I swung a sword, Hey Hey I swung a sword again,”

“After several hours I’m still swinging this sword with1 lodestone drop”

My point is this. You would think, Anet would say something. They have explained how the system works – to a degree – but when so many people are saying, no it’s not – you would think ANet would say look your full of crap or gee, maybe something is amiss.

I am happy to record 2 hours of uninterrupted video and toss it on Vimeo – I don’t think Youtube will allow anything over 10 minutes – which is why you’re not seeing unedited versions.

My only gripe in doing this is that Fraps saves files that are HUGE – we’re talking huge huge files – 2 hours worth is going to be one large file. If anyone knows of a recording service where the file size is decent, let me know and I will do this today.

I really think, in this case, visuals are the best way to make a point on this particular topic. If someone can start showing videos of diminishing returns wrecking their gameplay in a short amount of time despite normal play, I’m pretty sure the community would be like “WTH, Arenanet?”. And I’m pretty sure that sentiment would even be shared by people on the development team.

However, if people are doing something squirrely and running into DR, be prepared to get a response along the lines of “game is not intended to be played that way”.

I think the real question needs to be is WHY is there ANY DR? No other MMO (that i’ve played) has ever implemented any DR… so why is it all of a sudden needed here?

It certainly isn’t stopping bots, if anything it is encouraging them because normal players can’t get the items they need so they are much more likely to bot for them or buy them from bots.

And that doesn’t explain the karma DR at all… Karma is used to buy BoA items and can’t be converted to gold… it is only for personal use… a bot could farm karma for 100 years and he would just have a lot of karma that he couldn’t do anything with, it isn’t like gold or loot which you can sell. So can someone explain to me WHY karma is DR’d at all???
