Today I learned that Germans don’t like kittens (weird picture in my head with a German angry at a kitten). Thanks Anet!

On a serious note, when I first saw the filter I thought people talking about something being so kitten was some sort of new meme that I wasn’t aware of until I saw it where more flagrant swear words would normally show up.

Well… as for the Dev/Moderator that just removed a post of mine, he can kiss my kitten, in my opinion he is talking out of his kitten and IF I want to say the word kitten I will do ! ! !

Have a nice day kitten !

How is that? The thread doesn’t say anything like that, or missed I something.

Kitten would be Kätzchen in German, I would be fine with that, Mäuschen would also be great… almost everything is better that the strange word that seems to be used currently there (never heard anyone actually use that in real life), but even though I am German I prefer to post here in English, so I don’t care too much about that.

I’m saying that people that are perverted enough to take offence at sequences of sounds shouldn’t be catered for. Yet we see the opposite all over and that’s perverting the perversion even more – teaching people to shun what they shouldn’t be bothered by.

Using euphemisms isn’t cleaning up speech, it’s just temporarily hiding the truth from the shortsighted.

I see where you’re coming from. But I must disagree.

You seem to be treating words as though they are simply sounds that we can make. But that is a gross oversimplification. Words also have meanings. Some words, like the ones that have been filtered, have very strong meanings. Meanings that Anet doesn’t want in their forums.

Now, you can argue that switching the F word with kitten doesn’t get rid of the meaning. Which is true to a point. If someone says “go kitten yourself!” we all know it was an unfriendly meaning that was being sent. However, by placing the word kitten in place of the F word, we have also added the feelings of joy and softness that’s usually associated with kittens. As such, the impact of the meaning is not nearly as rough and in fact makes some people start laughing.

But even though it appears that Anet is hiding these words simply because they don’t want feelings to get hurt, that is not the only reason. The words that were censored are vulgar and not nice to look at.

If you want to argue that we humans need to stop getting so offended at things, such as swear words, I don’t think the Guild Wars 2 forums are the best place (nobody really cares). :/

And that is a scientific fact!

Words don’t have meanings on their own, it is each of our own individual minds that gives them meaning, based on our views, surroundings and language.
Two examples:
1.Gay for some people is a curse, for others a cheerful remark.
2.Chic(sheek), the word meaning “fasionable” and “stylish”, to my Lithuanian ears sounds like “šik”, which in my language basically means “go defecate”. Imagine hearing that in a TV advertisement.

While F is replaced with kitten, our mind still automatically fills in the innormality, with what fits better. The mind is known for filling in the gaps and even adding missing features to complete something that isn’t complete. Seeing “kitten” every time someone is displeased with me, someone else or the game it self, doesn’t bring me any joy associated with kittens, neither does it provide amusement.

I’m not arguing that people should stop being offended, however, I’m arguing that no one should care about that, because that’s their problem – a mirror of their own mind. Also, as for no one cares – I’d still like to see what devs/mods think on the issue.

No, Just No.

People should be mature and literate enough to express themselves without causing others offense. If someone was saying something offensive, I’d much rather read about kittens than about their immaturity and lack of verbal flexibility.

It has nothing to do with me being shortsighted, it’s about being respectful of others. It is in no way perverting anything other than your liberal sensitivities.

Besides, kitten is a great way to show the truth – the truth that people are illiterate jerks on the forums most of the time. Quit excusing their idiocy.

I agree with you here somewhat, but I now find the need to change my argument ever so slightly. One word, all by itself, does indeed have no meaning. However, the way that we use this word has the meaning. As such, when people who are familiar with a certain use see/hear the word, they unintentionally associate that word with the meaning.

That’s where I think you are oversimplifying the use of a word. I may not know Spanish. But if someone uses a Spanish word in what appears to be a hateful manner, I get the sense that it was hateful.

Next, I would hate to take the stance of “Well, just because it doesn’t bring you happiness doesn’t mean that it won’t bring others happiness.” But it looks like that may be what it has come to. The majority of the people on these forums most likely don’t have the same views as you and may very well find it amusing.

And lastly, I must have misread your post. My apologies. However, saying that we shouldn’t care about offending others is somewhat of a closed off way of thinking. Yes, we shouldn’t let the feelings of others dictate how we run our lives. But that doesn’t mean we can’t respect their desires.

P.S. I wouldn’t mind hearing from the Devs/Mods on this issue as well.

And that is a scientific fact!

It’s amazing how many times I see the word “kitten” appear, even in thread titles. “Your rewards are kitten.” Really?

It’s not like people are using curse words to express an actual viable rage. They’re doing it because it has become ingrained in our culture curse out of habit. If someone stubbed their toe and then typed “KITTEN that hurt!” I could understand it (though it’d be odd to type it out lol). That’s not what we see.

Though you quoted me, I said nothing about people using curse words to express rage or anything of the sort. If there is a situation where I can understand a curse word, it is in a moment of rage or surprise.

I said people typing forums posts use curse words in lieu of actual language. I agree, it is a cultural degradation and simplification and retardation of language. I prefer kittens in this situation over potty references and bigotry.

There isn’t anything disrespectful or immature about letting out a sequence of sounds that someone’s mind doesn’t think too highly off. I could name several words that you might use that would be curses here, where I live, does that make you disrespectful and immature?

Also, some of you people might want to see this: Penn & Teller on Profanity
Aside from those two, there are other people who made great things about profanity, but I can’t remember their names right now, so can’t exactly link their content here.
Oh yeah, before I forget – that link contains “excessive swearing”, as if fitting for a video about profanity.

And those types of things are funny because they are abrupt and many times immature.

It is still mostly used in our culture as a crutch for proper vocabulary. It still has no place on these forums, or in most work places. It is still preferable to see kittens on these boards instead of that type of language.
