The Shadow Behemoth was one of the best ideas Anet had IMO. Putting something so dramatic into a starter area is an incredibly effective way of getting people excited about this game.
I still remember the first time I saw it, during one of the betas. I’d heard the Temple of Ages was in the swamp so even though I was too low level I went looking for it. As I got closer I saw this thing through the trees, then I got even closer and suddenly it was looming over the trees. It was actually kind of terrifying, in an exciting way.
Of course back then, and for a while after launch, it was much more challenging to fight. Mainly because very few players were level 80 and almost none were fully geared. But also no one properly understood the mechanics. So many people would rush the base of it and get killed.
Now so many people know exactly what to do you barely have to think about it. But it still looks awesome.

Yeah first time seeing Behe was quite something. Most of the big bosses really, but Behe was my first real “wow” moment
When I started playing at release, Behe was like this mystical beast that everyone was terrified of. There was none of this “downleveled” business so there were no lvl 80s to help. Behe used to slaughter everyone that came to fight him.
The same happened with Fire Elemental. 40+ players would go fight him and he’d kill them all.
I kinda wish this would happen again. Claw of Jormag is a slow loot pinata. Tequatl and Triple Wurms are challenging but more in the sense that the time limit causes the failure rather than the boss himself. I’m looking forward to HoT to see what new lvl 80 (or higher?) bosses will be like. Fighting something that is strong enough to slaughter an army of lvl 80 players with interesting mechanics will be fun
We need more instanced content and less open world, open world content is a failure.

Actually down-levelling has been in the game since at least the first open beta. It’s just that early on there were very few level 80’s and the type of people who rush to max level are not the type of people who then go back to do events in starter zones.

I know that downscaling was always present, what I meant was that, that early on in the game, no one had reached level 80 yet so everyone that faced Behe back then were at the level of the map.

When I started playing, no one was able to do Shadow Behemoth because it would get bugged for days to weeks at a time.
