Your favorite race/gender/profession combo
any pictures would be great
Good thread. A lot goes into decisions like this…animations, the way armor and weapons look on certain races and genders, overall theme you are going for etc.
However…in terms of looks and animations alone…(not considering what would fit a certain race or lore or whatever)…
Guardian – Male Sylvari
Thief – Male Sylvari
Warrior – Male Charr(or Norn..toss up).
Elementalist – Female human
Mesmer – Female human
Engineer – Male Norn or Male Asura
ya I am really leaning towards a male Norn Engineer and use flame thrower the entire time lol, it’s like the Charzooka of flame throwers.
I like female-charr-warrior
Of the races, I like how charr look the best
Of the charr genders, I prefer the female design
And heavy armor looks best/is easiest to find a nice-looking set, for Charr
For me it really depends on the character. I normally start with a general idea – a personality, a backstory, an image – and I match the race, gender and profession to that.
I think that’s what makes a character look interesting, or fun to play to me. They look like they have a theme or a story rather than just being thrown together at random.
I’ve tried doing it that way too, I’d just use whatever option appealed to me at each step but the end result always feels uncomfortable, even if it’s a combination I’ve actually used before.
“Life’s a journey, not a destination.”
Male Guardian Sylvari. :P They’re adorable little tree juggernauts.
I have in the back of my mind an idea of what professions suit which race/gender before I ever bought the game…
These are what I ended up with:
Female Human Elementalist (my main and namesake)
Female Norn Necro (Because it boiled down to cultural armor)
Female Norn Guardian
Female Human Ranger
Male Norn Warrior
Male Human Mesmer
and I thought long and hard about which race to make an engineer. I’ve made and remade my engineer so many times, and wasn’t happy. Things I had done at creation didn’t translate well into the game itself. I tried Charr, but I can’t play a Charr for the sole reason that their running animation makes me laugh. I tried Asura, but I didn’t like the lack of armor divergence between genders. I tried Sylvari, but I simply don’t like them.
So, in the end, I made a Female Norn Engineer. I have yet to play her, so, I will see how it goes.
Cheers!
We have had threads about this before.
For me, the races break down like this:
Humans: any profession suits them as magic and technology have an equal place in their history. Heck, most of the professions (or the GW1 professions that progressed into renamed/modified/combined professions in GW2) have patron gods.
Charr: Warrior/Guardian (Blood), ranger, thief (Ash), Engineer (Iron). I cannot see Charr being into all the flouncy mesmer magic stuff, unlikely that a Charr necro would have any place in their society, and as soon as an Elementalist attuned to fire he.she would probably be executed!
Sylvari: Guardian, Ranger, Thief, maybe Mesmer, unlikely Engineer. But with the racial seed turrets the latter is unlikely as there is little evidence of engineering tech use in The Grove or south Caledon. It is a skill which would possibly become more widely tought as the Sylvari continue to integrate with other races and they learn from them. Necro, no chance. Why would a plant species have any form of power to reanimate animals? It makes zero sense. Elementalist is also highly unlikely, I cannot see the Sylvari having, or being able to set up, schools of magic.
Norn: Pretty much every profession except Mesmer and Necros would be exceedingly rare. I cannot see a huge hulking beefcake race having an interest in flouncy illusionist magic except for amusement.
Asura: Warrior for the Peacekeepers only (who would, incidentally, be the ‘drop-outs’ of Asura society. The ones incapable of even holding a temporary part-time assistant apprentice position in a laboratory). Perhaps Ranger as a Peacekeeper scout, or Thief employed to steal secrets from rival labs/Inquest. None of the magical races would apply, and the tech that Engineers use in GW2 would be so far below Asuran capability as to be laughable. “What? You actually use gunpowder propelled projectiles? How quaint! Here, check out the blueprints for my new 2000MW man portable plasma facemelter!”
My personal choice is: Human Engineer (since as in real life, firearms and light armour/no armour would eventually dominate sword and armour equipped soldiery), Sylvari Ranger (in tune with nature etc), Asura Warrior (if it had to be a combat class at all, since an Asuran normal sized sword would be ineffective on the battlefield and ranged weapons would be the future of combat). I don’t and can’t play Norn or Charr, but if forced I would go Norn Ranger or Warrior, Charr Warrior (Blood), Thief (Ash) or Engineer (Iron).
Asura everything. I just love how I can make some real fun outfits with them. I call this my techno Asura :P

Every combination can be good, if the character is well made and the armor wisely choose with good dyes.
Female for all characters. Not interested in looking at a male avatar.
Slyvari Ranger- Feels the most appropiate with the ranger/pet theme.
Human Ele- No particular reason when I made it.
Norn Thief- Wanted a big but stealthy character
Ironman- Coz cosplaying is fun
