I think part of what is causing people to reject gw2 professions as suitable replacements for those exclusive to gw1 is aesthetic differences, rather than mechanical.

For example, though the engineer can summon stationary AI-controlled allies just as some ritualists chose to, the aesthetic of each profession is drastically distinct from the other. If anything, it’s the gw2 necromancer that comes closest to emulating the ritualist, seeing as a small number of its skills (particularly spectral skills) appear to have to do with manipulating souls and spirits etc…

Besides, it seems kind of silly to compare professions from the prequel and sequel purely on a mechanical basis when the only real features the games share are lore and setting. Even returning professions like the mesmer operate very differently in gw2 relative to gw1, yet they share the same name and overall theme.

That said, it remains difficult to reintroduce the gw1 exclusive professions as playable options given the simultaneous availability of races, who as other have mentioned, would not normally practice the abilities of, say, a dervish.

Sigh, another of these absolute pointless QQ I want my old classes back QQ -Threads.

Its now nearly 2 years after release of the game. When will people finally get it, that those classes won’t ever come back.
If Anet would ever bring back something from that, then either as something of these 2 points:

1) Sub Classes
2) Completely redesigned different, but similar Core Concepts as new seperate Classes with different Class Names, like ANet did it with the Assassin and naming the result the Thief.
However, a game with too many seperate classes would be too hard to balance and GW2 basically just needs only 1 more seperate new Class and thats 1 additional Soldier Class, like a Knight, which could be usedon the same way to introduce also Polearm Weapons into the Game, like Halberds and Lances

Anything else won’t work with how ANet has designed Guild Wars 2’s Core Gameplay Systems and their made decision, that GW2 has a One Class System and not thankfully not again that horrible chaotic Dual Class System of GW1.

1) Is pretty much predestined to just improve those 8 “Basic Classes” that we currently have horizontally over time.
Its actually what alot of game Developers normally do over Expansions also to extend the Classes horizontally with Sub Classes to provide that way more Build Diversity, and more Specializations for the Characters to allow for a better Character Customization alongside with tons of new faces, hairstyles, hair colors ect. pp

And I guess, for the whole new Season 2, we won’t get to see anything like new classes at all.
Thats content, that Anet/NCSoft smartly surely holds back for when they will announce the first Expasion most likely 2015, when rumors about that are true in regard of that last financial report of NCSoft.

Season 2 I guess will be alot more about new explorable Maps in the Maguuma Djungle, new WvW Improvements based on EotM for the other maps, missing content finding finally into the game, like Polymock, precursor crafting, cooking/jewelry gettign finally to 500 too, legendary accessoires, an obligatory balance update with maybe also more new skills in form of more additional weapons from the existign ones added to the classes (and no, not all weapons for all classes), maybe improvements to the commander system and a few new guild features and perhaps at the end of season 2 something great, that alot of people wish for since a long time, stuff like housing or mounts as some kind of grand finale feature of permanent content beingadded in season 2 and all other stuff mostly will be gemstore content, like minipets, new faces/hairstyles, eternal harvestign tools, weapon/armor skins as usual and outfits now…

Thats my personal educated guess, what we may be seeing eventually over the course of season 2 getting added to the game, but surely not any new playable classes and especially not any of those old gw1 classes .

Personally I like the idea behind sub classes ~ quoted from Chris Whiteside

@^ Orpheal, I’m going to go out on a limb here and actually speak for me and my friends across the guilds I once played with in GW1.

The Dual Class system was a huge part of the draw for that game. The ever changing meta shifts because of constant balancing were a huge part of the reason many of us stayed playing. Builds came and went on a regular basis. GW was effectively Magic the Gathering w/3d combat. Finding synergies I think was kind of the point of that system.
The devs may have seen it as a problem to balance, but many of us liked that it happened the way it did.

Personally I wish for an updated version of that system with an upfront notice to it’s community :: This game will never be balanced, our attempts to balance are to purposely destroy the meta and rebuild. Don’t get comfortable with anything as rules will constantly change. That sort of thing absolutely keeps the pvp aspect of things fresh.

I’m also going to go out on a limb and say that it’s the PVE only traditionalist who seems to have the biggest problem with a system like the one GW1 had from the players side of the house. By that I mean the players who nestle into 1 or two builds and never leave it over the course of the game until they are forced to. The same sort of players here that play a staff ele and only use two attunements; Fire and Water.

Anyway, I personally don’t care that what we have now is covered by the classes we have. I still want more. If only for new mechanics. I mean lets be honest here. The classes we do have now pretty much all do the same things, just with different mechanics. Every class but thief and Mesmer and maybe ranger can group stack might. Everyone can load dps heavy (which sadly trivializes 99% of pve) providing essentially just one role. At least the only role that carries weight.

I personally think that these MMO’s never get balanced. It’s an everlasting ongoing process. It will never be perfect. Why not add additional options? Especially to essentially do the same thing like we have here in GW2.

All you really need to do is hit a bunch of check boxes. (for pvp/wvw mind you, as pve can be done with anything and done quickly with power builds)
1. Add a way for this class to obtain power builds
2. Add a way for this class to obtain condi builds.
3. Add a way for this class to obtain a bunker build.
4. Add a way for this class to obtain a roaming function.
5. Add a way for this class to give something to a party, be it buffs/blocks/reflects.
6. Add a way for this class to have close distance combat.
7. Add a way for this class to have long distance combat.
8. Decide what type of mobility you want this class to have.

That is sort of the skeleton I see when looking at this game. Build class mechanics around that. Balancing would probably be a little more work but at least we the players would get more options. That to me trumphs balancing especially since none of the classes are completely out of whack and have never been. Sure there have been some periods of an OP skill here and there, but us as players find ways to deal with them. That is how meta shifts happen before skills are patched. Players adapt.

I think those who talk about things be exceptionally balanced are those who grow attached to the smallest possible number of things any class can offer.

i don’t understand why people are negative about arena net adding these classes to begin with , an find it hilarious that the very same people who don’t want the old classes added to the game tend to think by them adding it it would ruin any continuity or make things further more unbalanced , yet we have all seen month in and month out that anet has done little to nothing in regards to balance that everyone can find themselves happy about . so i can say it is safe to safe that the people here that don’t want the old classes back are just worried about change and what it would mean for their main that they play anyways .

GW2 is a “dumbed down” version of GW1. Don’t expect anything of the GW1 complexity level. Games like Lineage 2 until chronicle 4/5 or GW1 within first 3-4 years are gone and won’t be coming back. Why? Nowadays, you create games for the greatest audience possible, hence childish dialogues/living story of GW2, a few classes without subclasses/double class system and so on.
I wish it was here, again, but let’s be honest. Those games are gone now, I won’t be expecting them to come back, unless we see the actual Lineage 3 ( no the Diablo 3-esque sequel to Lineage 1. Well, ArcheAge looks close too, as it was created by the Lineage 2 devs.
Still, I wouldn’t be too hopeful for those things to return, mate.

So true. The game has taken its inspiration from WoW. All the content updates the gem store. Haha

Assassin -> Thief
Paragon -> Guardian
Monk -> Guardian
Ritualist -> Guardian

Most classes from GW1 are moot points because lore simply would not sustain their presence just like dwarves are practically never seen and never will be a playable race.

Actually, Ritualists got upgraded into the Engineer archtype, with the turrets acting as if they were a Ritualist’s spirits. Monk and Paragon got devoured by the Guardian.
