hi guys,

i got this idea for the mailing system. makes it easyer to trade and saver to trade with players with out useing the trading house. paying to get the item(s) out of the mail.

basicly player A wants to sell item x for 20g to player B. so player A makes an mail with the item attaced in it. then sets an amount off 20g to be paid to get the item out of the mail. and sends it to player B. player B get the mail and has to pay before he can get the item in his inventorie. then the 20g will be sent back to play A.

ANet won’t do this.

The Black Lion trading post is both a secure method for trading (to avoid scams), and a gold sink (to help the economy). They do not and will not support trade by mail, and have said that anyone doing so will be doing it at their own risk.

Putting in a lower risk way of doing it would still allow many a scam, bypass the gold sinks in the trading house, and encourage people to spam various chats and even the LFG system with offers to buy/sell items.

Sarcasm, delivered with a
delicate, brick-like subtlety.

A lot of people have been wanting the ability to have safe direct player-to-player trading in game.

However, A-net made a point of stepping away from this system as it can be abused by scammers.

Moreover, the TP serves an important function in the game’s economy. The listing and selling fee taken by the trading post is a hedge against inflation. It means that 15% of the gold going through the TP gets removed.

The listing fee also means that a player can’t list an item for a ridiculous amount of money.

Allowing player-to-player trading bypasses this tax, which is dangerous for the economy.

Or they can leave it as it is, since they seem extremely happy with the system in hand. I’m pretty certain a “cash on delivery” (CoD) was likely considered during development and subsequently dismissed.

Oh boy I am having flashbacks to the first couple of weeks of the game when the TP was not accessible. Please no, no, no we really do not need advertisements for trades spammed in map chat again….

Since when did this business of being a hero become being a business?

It adds up to more than you think. A gold here, a few silver there, maybe a couple copper from hundreds of minor trades… every hour. We don’t get to see the results directly, but it’s there.

And if the TP is easier, and the costs don’t really matter much, then there’s really no need for direct mail trade, is there? If you’re noticing the costs enough to dislike them, then they’re high enough that they’ll have an effect on the game’s economy.

This is what Gaile has to say about it.

Yes. Please use the Trading Post. Please tell your friends — even your sworn enemies — to use the Trading Post. If we all use the Trading Post, scammers are out of business in the blink of an eye!

Be careful what you ask for
ANet may give it to you.

You forgot to say why spending the time and energy to implement & maintain this system would benefit the community.

  • Player A can already sell item X for market price.
  • Player B can already buy item X for market price.
  • Player A & B cannot trick each other into receiving the wrong item or spending/receiving non-market value for item X.
  • Neither Player A nor B will have to contact customer service to complain about a transaction gone wrong, where the circumstances depend on interpretation of chats and email.
  • Neither A nor B have to advertise their interest in item X to the tiny potential market in each map they visit, since they can already sell to the entire community, including folks that play every day and folks that only check the TP 1x/month.

In short, the current system is already wildly successful in allowing all players access to a free market in all goods. Even if there weren’t downsides to enabling email trades, it still wouldn’t be worth the trouble.
