new building skill and player owned houses
I would love some player owned houses, like the ones they have in Lord of the Rings Online.
it would be awesome.
This suggestion looks oddly similar to Runescape’s construction skill
The best they could do is something similar to Everquest Next added to the current gameplay, but that might require a complete remake of the game engine.
The only reason people aren’t posting in this thread is, all of us who have been trying to keep this topic alive all know Anet won’t give us an official response. There have been quite a few threads on this already. They know we want it, but they’re busy right now getting ready for season 2 of the living story, so they’re not responding to a lot of stuff right now. Its kind of a shame, but who knows what’s coming? Theyve got some tricks up their sleeve, and we’re just gonna have to wait it out.
dont be so kitten anet they are reading our posts even if they dont see fit to always respond, this will make it into the game someday i think
ok i typed the word “hard” and “on” and it filtered the two seperate words….thats a filter mistake on anet’s part someone should fix that
Just to add something to your idea. Imagine this:
In new LA, or hopefully another “all races” city, every guild can purchase via guild panel for lots of gold (let’s say 250 000 gold), influence and merits an NPC that lets them tp to a new map. Different instance of the same map for every guild. This map could be something in the Mists or simply non reachable by other ways. Like Southsun Cove. And the size of a new map could be similar to the size of LA. Preferably, guilds can chose from terrain templates. So we get diversity in landscape.
So, this is guild city. In it, guild leaders and officers can organize infrastructure and determine what parts of land should be used for common structures – Guild Hall for example, Crafting areas, Port, Barracks, fountains, etc, and what for personal – Houses.
Guild leaders and officers can buy common structure blueprints from an NPC on that map, again for lots of gold, influence and merits. After they put those blueprints, guild member can talk to building supervisor to donate materials for construction. Additionally, guilds can perform daily tasks that speed up construction. This events are chosen randomly every day and could be something simple, like killing enemies in wvw or something that requires more organization, like Tequatl, or 3H Wurm. Building major structure should be months of work ( even if all 500 members do their daily speed ups) and tons of materials.
In addition to that, every player can ask for piece of land for personal house. Or group of five players can group together and make house complex. You gave some neat ideas for this part.
Also, every player can spend 30 min a day laboring for common buildings construction. Work he get should be based on his housing craft lvl. So it could be dolyak escort, searching for special materials all over world, or add something like mini games where you are tested on your engineering skills.
But, every week, this city is attacked by random world boss (hopefully some new one, specially made for this guild event). Guild needs to defend city from it and if it fails, some of the structures are damaged or destroyed. I would also love it to be one only life event. So if you die, you can’t be resurrected or tp inside town until event is over. This would add more fun to it. Maximum of three of such events could be created at the same time, so all 500 people could enjoy. If all of 3 fight had been sucessfully done, guild gets 24h building speed up. Plus event personal rewards like chest and stuff.
Finishing common and personal structures enables you to hire different kind of NPC’s for every structure and gives guild members world bonuses. Some of them could be vendors for new skins only available in guild cities. like Pirate skins in port, or guard skins in barracks, flower based skins in park etc.
In gem store, there could be various stylish addition for structures. Cosmetics and visual. Shiny! Also, special gem items that enable guild leaders and officers to change common buildings visuals.
So, what would we get from this?
Guild Halls, Guild only events, Housing, GvG competition, Major gold/mats sink, New skins…
Basically, this is just a concept. It still needs some improvement, but you get the idea.

that sounds intricate but im not interested in the whole guild thing and id want my own house to build and mess with (and spend lots of money on) i think keeping with the simple “guild halls” on 1 hand and “player owned houses” on another is the best for this stage in suggestion making

i never played everquest so ul have to be more specific!

While I respect your wish and opinion, I think we should be more guild oriented. After all, name of the game is Guild Wars.
Also, I wouldn’t like if we all get to put our houses in separate home instances where no one else could see them.
I fully support player housing. I like most of the OP’s ideas and would have to agree that the home instance is empty and pointless. Easily forgotten. Adding player housing would fix that. Maybe.
I say maybe because I think player housing would be a lot cooler if you could have your house built in a setting of your choice. For example a Maguuma Jungle or Shiverpeak Mountain setting. You would use an Asura Gate, perhaps located in your home instance, that would take you to your home in its own instance. And of course you could invite friends and guild mates to see what you’ve done with the place. OR if not that, then maybe your house would be in a Guild neighborhood. But that poses the question of how that would work when you represent a new guild…
The player would build everything but services would be purchased in the gem store, such as relocation to a different setting, adding a garden, extending the land to include a nearby cave with mining nodes, adding a crafting station, etc. I also think it would be cool to be able to buy wall hangings such as paintings of the concept art you see here and there in the game.

I like the idea. Housing/Guild Housing would be amazing. Pity it would have to be an instanced one. :/

instanced is a good thing! otherwise we would all end up walking through an endless urban sprawl of disjointed nonsense

instanced housing was the idea from the start. and as for the name of the game i really dont care what they call it, it didnt make sense in gw1 and it doesnt maek sesne now, perhaps the new building skill could affect guild halls ASWELL tho. no reason we cant do both at once

i brushed up against that idea earlier i really would not want the home limited to the actual home instance, whih woudlnt make sense because i DO NOT want houses to be soulbound, they must be character wide if ur gana b spending so much money on them.
perhaps u can pick between the starter areas OR the npc for entering your player owned house can just be in your home instance and u talk to them to teleport to your home.
im afraid i just cant see any way for guilds to get involved with this unless the building skill was also used to build guild halls (which i would like)

You realize home instances are shared on an account? I use the one in DR all the time on my asura to mine sprockets/crystals/candy corn, and I can’t re-enter a different home instance to mine these again on a different toon within the same daily period.

the timer for mining nodes is account bound not the home instances themselves, why whats that got to do with anything?
I would love some player owned houses, like the ones they have in Lord of the Rings Online.
it would be awesome.
all these games i dont know about so i cant compare their poh
This has been suggested I one form or another in several threads the only way this can remotely work is. If they sold plots of in game land in the gem store unfortunately this idea and type of in game housing takes a lot of server space and they would have to pay for the added servers some how, i f you ever ran a Minecraft server then you know what I’m taking about.
This could work further down the track as more maps/lands are introduced and expanded.
Another suggestion I mentioned in another post was to use existing buildings such as buildings in Divinity’s Reach… use them as real estate. The homes themselves could be instanced, which means one door could house 50+ instanced homes. That way not only would it alleviate the problem of land grabbing for real estate on ingame maps but it would also give the players a reason to come back to the major cities and use them like they should be used.

i think part of the idea was to use the home instance as its kinda useless now
I love a lot of these ideas. Hopes a dev is looking
The one issue I feel would need to be handled is…what about the Sylvari? If I’m going to have a house, I don’t want to build it; I want to grow it. I think the mechanics of the “building” skill would need to take this into account. I’m not a heavy-RPer, but I also still flinch at things I find too immersion-breaking, and building a house out of planks and stone blocks as a Sylvari falls into that category with me.
Otherwise, I would love to have trophy cases, visual reminders of what I’ve achieved. Looking through the achievement and story panels on my Hero window is pretty bland. Plus having more control over what my house looks like and how my “home instance” functions would be great. I get annoyed when I enter my home instance and see a bunch of other NPCs there. It’s my house! Can’t I have a say who gets to enter my house?

if i get enough replys they will be =)
A new Sims game is in the works for all of you. Buy it when it comes out, then build and socialise away all you want.

except i want to build and socialize in gw2 while my buidling and socializing takes part ina larger context of monster slaying and gathering of rare materials and loot all while taking part in a dynamic economy that evolves to accomidate this unique niche

i was planning on it so that you could pick the tile set of your house, this would not change the furniture (afterall the sylvari use wood to do every other profession) but you could make the walls and stuff look like the grove
player owned houses are also helpful to the economy as they can decrease the wealth gap between the rich and poor by giving the rich something to spend money on with little to no return profit but yet a great sense of satisfaction. this in turn makes goods that the poor want lower in price as the rich have less income to bolster the prices of these items with through outcompetition
Best suggestion I’ve seen.. well, ever. +1
wow thanks =) haha i had been thinking about it for a long time i guess that shows
This is such an great idea! Maybe one of the best i’ve seen ! +1 ! I really hope devs can see this!
any new ideas for rooms? i was thinking about a crafting room where you have all your service workbenches that you build yourself but i thought it seemed a bit redundant if your already in the city….still if you are in your house and just wana use it….
I’m not sure if they would want to go with a housing idea.
I’ve played Wildstar and I’ve seen and experienced their housing, which was incredible. It was designed as if it was using 3D modeling tools (minus abstract scaling), and everything had collision… except some plants and grass. People have made forests, race tracks, skate parks, random piles of junk…
If anything, they would just make it a guild hall, in which you have your own room.
Nonetheless, +1
thats exactly why they should go for this housing idea! they will only work as hard as we expect them to remember that
GW2 will never expand beyond the Home Instance. The development team is too focused on other things, such as the Living Story, which is taking up all the resources from other aspects of the game. It’s sad really. I mean, we can’t even sit in chairs, how pathetic is that, and people are expecting them to go all out on client-side developing tools? This won’t happen.

Oh, i would like it. I just don’t ever see Anet implementing it. They are too focused on other things.
As a side note; It’s been a Iittle over 2 years, and Swtor finally implemented their housing system, and they probably have a smaller team and smaller budget, especially when they laid off a lot of people due to the dramatic loss of players, and then going f2p. They just have housing as their focus, whereas Anet doesn’t as far as i know, since i haven’t seen any dev talking about it for awhile. Here’s some new info and pics on Swtor’s housing system.

Not necessarily – increase the size of home instances a bit, leave some room for one house. No need to allocate open world space for this.
I don’t see the draw to housing (I’ve read the reasons, but am neutral on the whole idea), but allocating real estate in open world (and the potential for sprawl) isn’t necessarily required. Yeah, there’d be an increase in storage space, but I don’t think it’d be on the order of what you’d see in Minecraft (which does allocate in Open World).
I would love this so freaking much, too bad Anet is occupied with releasing more scarlet stories.
/very disappointed sigh

yea anet has the technology to instance this kind of thing and they undoubtedly would this just isnt the type of game to sprawl things out
+1 would like to see new crafting skills

If you keep this thread on top they’ll have to reply eventually. Basically it’s just the Guild Halls idea brought a step further, what some of us were expecting when we bought this game. Let’s hope they have a surprise for us eventually. LS is nice but a strong Guild-related mechanic is lacking.
+1 would like to see new crafting skills
right? it would be nice to have skills that arnt all just click and drag the components and have visible changes on your enviornment. we need different kinds of skills
This suggestion looks oddly similar to Runescape’s construction skill
What I was going to say. That being said, it’s not a bad idea. I would also suggest it to allow guild halls of some sort.
Guild halls = fortress = guild vs guild = happy people

they do need more of the “guild” in guild wars dont they…..
I as good as NEVER visit my home instance, and I won’t think I will even if they’ve added player owned houses to it.
The only scenario where I could see player houses adding value to the game is if each single one of they were put inside the open world. Imagine if Lion’s Arch weren’t rebuilt by ANet, but ENTIRELY by players. But that won’t be possible considering the vast amount of players, but yeah. That’d be cool.
I just find such “personal” content like this very isolating, antisocial and boring. A “no” from me basically.
witness our wonders and cry out in astonishment and humble themselves.

i consider the zerg very isolating and anti social too =p, this offers a way to see another player’s personality displayed in their design choices and go to hosted parties i hardly think thats more anti social than everything currently in the game

oh and i did mention this is definatley for gvg too, i wish i could update the title but it coudlnt be any longer anyways
+1 to OP I’d LOVE this, but if the house were to be in the home instance, wouldn’t it be easier on the whole system (as it’s instanced and personal and already there)?
It’d just need a “guesting” system (like GW:EN HoM but with a “who’s the party leader?” option that’s missing atm, so that the game knows whose home instance to load).
I’d rather we didn’t have housing, as I can’t see why I’d want to spend time playing in a doll’s house. But I’m sure there is a game out there for you guys and girls who do want housing.
It’s a bit like jumping puzzles- if you like platform games there are already plenty out there, feel free to go play them.
