Had this game for nearly two years now, and never really got in it was always swapping classes never settling at all so I never got to the end stuff ever. I figured I’d see about coming back but from what I’ve read on these forums they have all changed a lot,
If I did come back would it be best to start fresh? I never got a class higher than mid 20s ,Playing certain other game I’ve always preferred the ranged role, with the chance to heal thrown in, but they have to look well good, not talking the skimpy stuff but the nice looks.
Is lvling different now? are there still the champ trains for a quick boost? are there things I should know of?
I know some of these questions seem like they are very open and depends on how I want to play but any information is good information
thank you

Thing about this game is you don’t need to start fresh. Its so easy you can have white gear and do events like shadow behemoth, megadestroyer, and other mega bosses because you rarely even take any damage and even if you die or whatever you get rewarded because you hit them for 1 damage and nobody is going to notice that you didn’t contribute so much that they make you feel bad.
You just go back in and jump on the EotM train and nobody is going to tell you that you should quit because you aren’t good, nobody really notices you in this game to be honest.
Just play what you enjoy, if you want to start over go ahead, but really no point to start over, all that happens is you get worse loot than playing on your higher level character.
People do EotM at lvl 10 and lvl 80, only difference between them is that lvl 80 gets better gear and lvl 10 gets worse gear. This game is designed to be easy for you to come back too, which is one of the best things this game has going for it.

I would just install it and try it out, since you own it already.
Just remember, the endgame starts at level 2. If you don’t like what you’re doing at level 10, 20 or 45, you likely won’t like what you’re doing at level 80.

Not sure what you are looking for exactly, but there is discussion on raids being introduced into the game by the developers(they are looking to hire a raid director as well).

The leveling is definitely different now.

It takes longer to get to some of the milestones along the way to 80 but new folks seem to like it. As far as end game stuff goes for now the journey is the “end game”. I hear they are going to add raids and a few other things eventually so getting up to 80 now would be a good idea if so.

As far as your play style is concerned maybe try a staff ele. You can change between that and double dagger for some heavy damage output. Although staff can do pretty well in that department now too. Since you can change your attributes for free now it will let you go between builds pretty easily. Just keep some alternate gear on hand.

There is a discussion about raids, but also if you think about it, this game already does have raids if you look at events like Tequatl and Triple Trouble. If people are thinking about ones for guilds, there are ones through guild missions too like one in Blazeridge Stepp. I don’t think people will be satisfied with more bosses if that’s what they are looking forward too because they too will get stale. I think people secretly want raid gear, but in this game I see that unless its really hard to get, not tradable.. Everyone will have it if its not what I mentioned and it will just make players even more stronger and I don’t think that’s good for balance in the game, unless they make a new zone that’s really hard, but what that does is take people away from the rest of the zones, so its a very complicated issue.

You like good stories… Wait for a while. The main story has just been butchered, retconned and made absolutely illogical. But if you do start a new character, then the charr Blood Legion early story is still mighty fine.

I think GW2 has some really bad storytelling. I’ve never been able to get into it, too corny for me. Among other things. I just can’t get into it at all.
This game is predominantly a PvE game imo. The PvP parts(WvW and SPvP) see next to nothing when it comes to updates, which has made them more than stale at this point.
For example, SPvP is still using the same game type since launch. Every single map is domination, which is equivalent to EoTS/Arathi basin if you’re familiar with WoW. The only SPvP in the game feels like a single battleground game type. No diversity to be seen.
I won’t really comment on WvW because I’ve never enjoyed the format. I just know that everyone seems to complain about it, and It doesn’t any updates.

Achievements are not worth chasing imo. The amount of grind attached to some is not really humanly possible. Like the kill 1 million dolyaks or capture 1 million objectives in WvW. There are a lot of achievement points that are no longer obtainable as well. So you will never be able to actually collect them all at this point. If that’s what interested you.

The community is one of the better ones I have experienced in an mmo. I would suggest that you avoid pugging dungeons early on. It would really distort your opinion of the players.

hmm, stories, well to try the new ones you need to be 80, i dont think its that great but its ok.
i dont think pve in the game is generally of the type you get lost in.
there is a ton of schievements and grind if you want certain appearences/items.

story 6/10
engaging/engrossing pve 6/10
achievements/items to grind 8.5/10

Only come back if you plan on playing toons made before April’s patch.

Otherwise, you will be very frustrated with how grindy character progression has become

It’s hard to say.

In terms of going for rewarding progression and trying to be the special snowflake, please don’t. The grind in this game is just not worth it. I think this is a game best played 1-2 hours daily or so.

I strongly recommend finding a way to associate with other players. Finding a decent guild is a good choice, but wvw also has a place to play with a community. Playing solo is alright, but I don’t really see any lasting value in it especially with the megaserver tossing you in with strangers.

For once you have tasted flight you will walk the earth with your eyes turned skywards,
for there you have been and there you will long to return.

Didn’t you have to unlock the traits through the books before the change to be grandfathered in? I thought that’s what I read at least.

I’m an idiot. Was that in response to my post?

I was responding to Phys, saying that the OP wouldn’t be grandfathered in to the traits because he only leveled his characters to mid 20s. He would still have to jump through hoops to get the individual traits.

I’m guessing it was just a statement saying that it was easy to get the traits pre trait patch.

Well the game is F2P so whats there to lose if you don’t think it was worth coming back too?

I would say yes, it is worth coming back too. In fact, I liked how they changed it to where you start your own personal storyline missions after reaching level 10. That to me gave me the opportunity to get into the game better, getting use to it more and it persuaded me to keep going which allows me to feel like I can do whatever I want without being rushed or forced into the main storyline at level 1 or 2. Pretty much everything gives you XP too not to mention all the world events that you can do at any given moment or time. Even the community is very helpful at times. Its one of the many reasons why I love this game so give it a shot, I’m sure you’ll be happy.

Seeing as how there’s no expansion..basically its the same game. So if you didn’t like what there was before, then I would suggest not spending/wasting time. they added some more story but…its just gw2 story, basically watching 2 characters speak to each other with concept art in the background.

from what i heard, if a charachter was created before the patch, they will have all traits unlocked once the reach the appropriate level. If they are created after the patch, they will have to unlock every trait individually via task, or gold an skill points.

The main effect for someone grandfathered in is getting the traits later, and getting most of them in the last few levels, i believe.

Unfortunately, I think that story is the piece of the game that’s at the lowest point right now.

They’ve recently made alterations to the Personal Story that makes the last 10 levels of it completely “wtf?” worthy. The Living World’s Season 1 was made as temporary content due to a new format they were testing and though it will be made permanent in a new format, it isn’t in-game at all yet so you can’t experience it, and Season 2 is heavily reliant on knowing Season 1 events (in general). You could read up on Season 1 on the wiki or the like, but it isn’t really teh same.

The Living World in general has, in regards to story, been very lack luster in my opinion. It ranges from downright rageworthy over the contradictions and discrepencies (mostly from Season 1) to just facepalm worthy, to – with increasing rate of appearance thankfully – actual enjoyment and awesomeness.

The art and music has been awesome, and in regards to the Living World only, so has the mechanics.

If you want good storytelling from ArenaNet, go play GW1 if you haven’t. It is far superior to GW2 in almost every way.

As for community – the official forum is not a good place to find the better parts of it, especially as of late. Here you’ll mostly get naysayers and “the game is dying!” doomsayers.

Dear ANet writers,
Stop treating GW2 as a single story. Each Season and expansion should be their own story.

The personal story is weak, the Living Story Season 2, even though some people don’t like it, is more highly regard by more people in my opinion. There are certainly less complaints about it.

Also someone above said something about figures talking to each other against a moving background. That’s no longer the way cinematics are done.

I think the new story is much better than the old one for a number of reasons, not the least of which is I never really like Destiny’s Edge.

That is correct. They don’t have to do the whole bs trait hunting / buying with gold + skill points. But they’ll still have to grind all the way to level 36 to get their first adept skill, and then go all the way to 60 before unlocking master tier traits, and then all the way to 80 before unlocking grandmaster traits. They only get 1 trait point every 6 levels and then start getting 2 towards the last portion of the game.

It took too long so I got bored and quit at level 52.

If you never got to any sort of end game then yes, it would be worth a revisit.

Overall the game has not changed, but many systems have been altered or retooled. Just like that other MMO though, the changes do not overall effect how the game plays or “feels”, once you have been there and done that, it’s the same thing.

For you it would be worth playing again most probably. Until Raids are implemented, and depending on how they are implemented, I don’t see much changing with this game’s game play, for those who have been there and done that.

If you want to level up, gain loot, in a zergfest ala the old kessex hills type champ train, your best bet is EotM.
