Maybe this is whining I’m not sure, but I feel like I’ve gone far out of my way to endorse GW2. From telling friends about it to buying multiple copies for friends and family. To buying gems when it first came out I purchased $50. This is all in love with the franchise and Anet for doing a great job.

I feel like Anet is going out of it’s way to promote dislike for the game with diminished returns, the constant bugs, and the poor management of the Gem Store in general.

This Halloween event has put the GEM store in the forefront for a lot of people. I personally try to support the GEM store and hence the company in turn. The amount of money I put into the GEM store vs. my return on investment is insanely a small pittance.

If I was a conspirator I would say someone at ANET is attempting to get me to quit the game or is running a gold farming business and wants to push people toward using those services.

Primarily the whole skin thing has been insane, with the use/purchase of black lion keys, then the mystic ripoff forge, I feel like I’ve not just been ripped off once, but then they turn around and tell me I can put my stuff in there and get ripped off twice.

The value of the money → gem is way off. For $50, you should receive almost 12000 gems. That seems like a lot but the cost of the various things and their value is extremely low because almost everything is cosmetic, the boosters are time based, and DR limited. Either the items purchased needs to drop or the gems need to go up.

Also I’m not even going to say how much more I dropped in the GEM store to get one freaking skin, it’s embarrassing to say the least, and it won’t happen again.

I dunno, I remember when I used to play Dungeon Fighter a full Avatar Set (stuff to change the look of your character) was often times 25+ dollars. Thinking back on it that’s a ridiculous rip off, but after playing a game long enough you start buying into the weird way they price things and think it’s a deal.

There’s real world logic and game logic, I think you’re expressing the schism you feel when comparing the two.

Why do you feel entitled to have everything that’s available? Do you go to a casino and expect to come out with a return? Do you feel you are required to buy gems for something that’s completely optional?

Get over it. They are rare skins for a reason. You can’t always have everything. I want the shield skin badly but I don’t feel like I’m entitled to have it.

If the amount of gems you get for $50 isn’t enough for you, don’t buy them.
If the odds of gambling with BL chests and/or forge aren’t high enough for you, don’t do it.

I bought 2 packs of minipets to get the rare mini and the witch costume to farm costume brawl achievement later on – although i find it cute in its own right, too. Used in-game gold for all of that.
Never bothered with gambling, and if i did, i was in full mental power to understand that it is gambling and i may get nothing interesting in return, at all.

You feel ripped off simply because, using your own words, you supported the company with gems but got nothing in return, although you should have understood the gambling part in all of that. I don’t feel like betting my real cash – or even in-game gold too often – on random chances, so i don’t gamble; simple as that.

I think the biggest problem was how ridiculous was the drop rate on the BLC , and then they did it again on the Mad King chest.

Fact is , supporting Anet and giving them money is past to me. I wont give them a single cent and exploit all i can for ingame gold. Seems to be the ideal system when dealing with Anet now.

Casinos have laws for “fairness”, and in fact have a base return and not only that but a visible display of that the return is. Even lotto tickets have this. It is utterly optional but if I played 100 $1 tickets I can guarantee one of them is going to be a winner especially when the return on the ticket says 1:5 is a winner.

Totally!

The only thing i have ever considered buying gems for was the Box O’ Fun for the sake of my guild (i’m a manager there) which i’d say was worth it as it got a lot of laughs.

The rest of the store is an utter disappointment though. There’s so few things there. And at the same time, this store could (and is probably meant to) be a very important source of revenue for AN after the purchases of the game itself dies down, which it should right about now. They could make so much money from it if they just put more people to work on unique store-items.

Look at the store in Team Fortress 2 for example. There’s so much in there and so much added all the time that you’ll never run out of exciting things to check out. If Black Lion Trading Company was like that, AN would make more money from it than from the sales of the game.

And the more stuff there’s in there, the lower the prices can be for each item, making their customers actually buy the stuff.

GW2 has definitely taken a page from the cash shop gambling features of Korean MMOs. It’s totally possible to get screwed if you’re not careful.

It’s why some of these games run across gambling laws in some countries…

How would you know without getting ripped off in the first place? Someone has to be the first in the lake to find out how deep it is. You would at minimum if you believed in Anet to expect not to be so unfairly ripped out of your money. Not everyone approaches Anet like a big evil corporation and expect fair and decent morally based decisions from the company.

Just dont give Anet any money. I see tons of fanboys defending this system , i wonder how many of them actually spent money.

Stop giving Anet money , let the fanboys do it. For people with not biased opinion this is a waste.

If they are all talk , and not spending , Anet will make our way , cause dont matter how many or how much the fanboys talk , Anet follows the money , and that is it.

@Volomon:
Because all gambling is bad if you’re not ready to take the risk of going away with completely nothing? Because even if the drop rate of cool items was 70%, you would still have 30% chance of wasting money and/or gold?
It’s a matter of principle, first and foremost – if you’re not ready to lose, don’t gamble. In fact, don’t play games if all you expect is constant winning and breezing through content, beating opponents and winning all the time at everything. But that’s getting carried away a bit.

Even without that, you could have waited a day or two until others went over and started gambling. There are dozens of whining threads on this very forum, akin to this one, making me not even think about gambling my in-game gold with the BL chests.

Instead, you thought that if you pay real cash, you are sure to get something in return. Based on what? High hopes only.
If you wanted something sure and certain for gems, you should have bought the two awesome costumes, all the minipets (here i will agree – making us pay 1k gems for 4 pets is a rip off, but an open one, one we may consciously agree on or deny) and enjoyed the in-game content we got for the holiday, which is truly epic even if you can’t complete the tower jumping.

I’m not quite sure that’s entitlement, when the value of a dollar is a morally understood point of value. For instance rigging the value of any economy around the world is considered a crime against fair and just competition to which prison time often follows. If you happen to live in a state where everyone decides that gas should be 3 dollars higher than what it is currently, wouldn’t you agree that that value is not morally right for what you believe your currency is worth.

Just because someone slaps down a price point and amount of return, when they are the only purveyors of said item/currency it does not automatically make it just. Especially not when there is a black market out there who sells the same thing for half or less than the cost. It is with a sense of fairness and expectation that people are not turning to that other market.

@Nox Aeterna:
End-game, once you have all your characters equipped in full exotic stuff (and best at least 8 characters, one of each profession) isn’t skin-hunting, although you can stick to it if you WANT to; as in all other MMOs, the true end-game is PvP. Even PvE points at that [SPOILER SPOILER] – some of the rewards for story completion are W3 blueprints.

It’s fine to be done with a game once you have achieved what you’ve wanted, and played through the content you wanted. I for one never liked playing a bad guy in Fallout, so i never experienced a considerable chunk of the game and easter eggs – and that’s fine, because i wouldn’t enjoy the gameplay too much; instead, i played through each F installment a dozen of times as the good guy, having fun each time.

I know plenty of people who have spent money in the shop and don’t feel ripped off about it, just they aren’t spending time whinging on the forums, they’re out enjoying the event. We just escorted a level 2 player in a Mad King’s outfit most of the way to Orr (and some other places as well) from Lion’s Arch, and it was great fun =D

I think Anet could have been more explicit on the precise odds of getting a rare skin, but beyond that, I think there has been alot of content released for the general player base, and its great fun so far.

So no, I don’t really care for the fashion show. I play this videogame called GW2 for the game aspect of it.

My point is exactly that you wont have much to do once you hit end game , getting full exo is not hard at all. Getting full exo with the skins you want … that is another story.

And while true that it point to PvP , other games it would last much longer , since getting top stats gear on PvE is a much longer road.

In GW2 , if do not care about looks and PvP , PvE ends shortly after 80. (Unless you love alts , which we know lots and lots of people dont)

What the hell are you talking about? Are you trying to analyze a simple concept to make yourself feel smart and politically correct?

You buy gems at a fixed price. You buy keys at a fixed price. You use keys at a fixed value. You have a CHANCE to get items. You are not buying gems, or keys, for these items. You are buying them to open a chest. The concept is simple. It is not up to you to decide what the value on anything is, when the value has already been set by Anet.

It’s completely your opinion if you got your money’s worth. To Anet, they posted the price, you bought it, you got your money’s worth. Blaming a RNG and twisting it around with economic mumbo jumbo and using big fancy words is not going to change the fact that you feel entitled to get more than your money’s worth.

Nope got exactly what I wanted:) but didn’t gamble.. Though got a key from daily:D no skin, don’t care much most of em are ugly.. Got boosters and instant bank.. They are also a part of the reward..

I think ppl are being narrowminded thinking the skins are the only reward.. Buuuut the boosters and the services are the reward, with chance of permanent service and/or skins. If you feel ripped of then well the chests are not for you. Most games are not for you tbh.
Also why bother posting it.. Ofc fanbois will flame you.. And reasonable ppl will tell you thatit was stupid to waste money on luck, when you could have bought gold and then go to the TP.. Or farmed gold.. 2 hours = 1g if you know what to look for.

But thanks for supporting this brilliant game with your money, enjoy your boosters.. And if you need candy trade em in the forge for Halloween chests xD bewared though.. U might get a skin;b

I think everyone’s missing the point entirely, most counter arguments are based on you should have known better, it’s gambling, to you should enjoy the game without the gem store.

None of which respond to the main point, which is the value of the gem store and it’s fair and equal value to the money you put in it. I’m glad everyone sees an alternative namely avoiding it. That doesn’t address the point, some of us WANT to support ANET. I gave them that money like I would give a kickstarter company money it’s an investment, but it doesn’t hurt to see some return for my investment. That is the point. It isn’t sololy the chest though that is the main reason I purchased them it’s the alternative. If I took that same money and spent it at a gold farmer I would have the skin and have twice (possibly three times) as many gems as I would have if I purchased them directly from ANET.

That’s my point there needs to be a fair and equal value for my money. Ultimately the point of the store was to finance ANET (even though they want to pretend it’s not), and to remove the gold farmer equation.

On average per day I find 3-9 bots and report them ( don’t ask me why they come in pairs of three ), I go out of my way to support ANET I just expect an equal turn about.

Arena Net can never compete with gold farmer prices because it’s substantially easier to botfarm than it is to make bot farming inviable. It’s less a money commitment than a time commitment. If they make the gem store too lucrative, then in order to keep up with the market inflation, people will eventually have to act like gold farmers – playing the game to maximize profit rather than to maximize fun. That’s how gold farmers kill MMO communities – using against-TOS means, they can earn money in the most boring, nightmarish way because they completely forsake its entertainment value.

Buying from the gem store helps people who don’t buy from the gem store because it drives gem prices down, and vice versa. Any buff to the real money side of the gem store will assist fake money speculators, which includes farmers. any buff to in game money earning will boost real money purchase value. Going too far one way or the other destabilizes the market economy and allows people to make illicit profit faster before being banned from the system. That’s why nothing seems profitable.

The main point is that your view of the gem store is skewed and flawed. I’m sure you would be thinking quite differently if you achievement what you were trying to get (ie skins).

The store is fair and is equal to the value you put into it. You bought keys to open chests. You did just that. The contents of the chest has nothing to do with the fact that you bought the keys with gems. That was your return investment. You got keys.

Buying gold from farmers doesn’t make your point any more valid. Just because thy are setting the price for gold doesn’t mean Anet has to bend over for them and adjust their gem prices. Its their game for crying out loud.

You mentioned buying the skins again. Its quite apparent that you are trying to mask your main issue, which is not value or return, its the fact you didn’t get what you wanted.

@OP No, you are not the only one. The gem prices are ridiculous. Plus, the fact that the items on the gem store either run out in 1 hour, are useless or you don’t know what you’ll get have made me sure that I won’t be wasting a penny on them.

OMFG another QQ thread… You knew that you where taking a CHANCE to get a skin by opening a BLC. No one put a kitten gun to your head and made you spend your paycheck on them keys.

Ever play GW1? If you have you would know how hard to was to get something out of the Gift of the Traveler and most people would just sell them for 5p each rather then open them. Here you can even go look at the drop rates. http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Gift_of_the_Traveler/Drop_rate

I put 20$ towards the lotto once a year not because I know I will get them millions but because just maybe one year I might. 20$ a year is all I’m willing to spend.

Now stop your kitten whining.

Real life lottery—if everyone wins, nobody gets anything. Digital lottery—amount won has nothing to do with amount lost in an endless supply of pixels.

Why do people go to complaint threads and deliberately read through complaints only to complain about how much they hate complaining. Masochists, or hypocrites?

There are more posts on the forum saying “OMG QQ THREAD!!!! STOP CRYING!!!” than people actually complaining – and they usually have good reason to. GW2 community has a bad population of fans that jump down peoples throats whenever 1 bad word is spoken of ANet or GW2. People are entitled to their own opinions. Not everyone has to kiss kitten like you. If anyone looks like an agitated baby, it’s you people.

Now go do something constructive.

A lot of complaining about the chests in this thread. Did you open the chest and get nothing, or did you get something you didn’t want? I’m fairly certain it’s the got something you didn’t want part. There was no guarantee you would open up a chest with complaining random list of items and get the one thing you were after. Go cry me a river. People complaining about the chests are nothing but cry babies. If you can show me 1 tiny bit of information where ANet said you were guaranteed the item you wanted and I’ll retract my statement.

So you really aren’t even sure what someone that is complaining here has experienced… you don’t know how much or how little they got… you don’t know what the drop rate is, other than it’s not 100%, and that’s all that matters… you don’t know anything other than you hate whiners and want to berate them. Does that about sum it up?

It was clearly a rhetorical question. Here’s a hint how to tell: because he answered it himself.

Everyone can tell what’s in the chest simply by mousing over. The chance to get a skin is just an added bonus during Halloween.

I agree. I am not spending another dime on Anet. Yes we know it is a gamble, yes we know we don’t have to do it. But the fact is that many of us want to support the game and expect at least something useful in return. If they intend for the gem store to be a steady scource of revenue, then they better adjust the RNG, because I for one will never be spending another dime on this game and many MANY people feel that way. Way to go Anet. Solid marketing strategy. Well done.

I’m sorry, I thought we were talking about skins specifically, since they were obviously the only reason that people bought keys in the first place. I didn’t realize this was the rehashed “be happy you paid an amazing amount for candy corn” argument.

I’m also not talking about entitlement, I’m talking about FAIR value.

You are talking about entitlement. You think because you spend money on gems you are entitled to get what you want. The fact of the matter is, you knew that it’s a RNG game when you bought the keys. Anet is not trying to rip anyone off. They put the mad king chest in for that same reason.

This has nothing to do with being fair. Its entitlement. The way it is now is already fair. Everyone has the same odds. You just feel yours should be better than everyone else.

It comes under ripping off when the advertised items are next to impossible when it comes to odds of getting them. It’s a scam in my eyes and many others.

But if anyone needs to get over it, you do. You seem to be the most irritated one here. Guess you wasted all your gems.

No, the argument is “you knew what was in the chests, don’t lash out at Arenanet just because you bought 100 of them and you now wish you hadn’t”.

And you need to pay better attention. The argument about candy corn was that it WASN’T in there, not that it WAS. That’s why Arenanet made the second round of chests allowing people to convert non Halloween contents in Halloween items.

But I can go to a casino, walk in with $500 and walk out with 5 grand. What can I do with 5 grand? Pay my bills, down payment on a car, put it into a college fund, high dollar hookers for some fun.

I can spend $500 on a game and do what? Nothing you buy can have any value outside of that game so STOP COMPARING THIS GAME TO CASINO GAMBLING!!!

As for rare skins, who do people defend them being rare? It makes no sense. You wear or use something so you can look cool not because you want people going ‘Ooooh Aaahh!’ If that’s the only reason you want that chainsaw sword then you’re shallow.

All the victims that want their scythe or shield because it’d make their character look a certain way get to suffer just so others can feel special about having something someone else doesn’t have? That’s stupid.

Now quiet while I go farm gold instead of enjoying the events because I want a scythe that’s overpriced and stupidly rare to obtain for no actual reason.

If you can obtain logic from that, then something is wrong with you.

kitten is technically something but if you opened a chest and all that was in it was kitten, that’s no better than opening a chest and it being empty.

Well, everyone can say as they please, but when I read the OP, I had to sadly agree. I feel like I have spent a lot of time hyping the game to freinds, etc. , but now, two-months in, I tell people to wait a bit to see if ANet improves upon some of the things the OP notes. It just seems that this is a great game, fantastic concept, poorly run. (Sorry, I am not trying to be a hater, and I am not screaming quit, but I just cant look past all the problems anymore: camera; bots; gem store implementation; and insane number of bugs (to name some). Maybe in a few more months, if the community voices its constructive concerns, this message will get through and we end up with the game I want to tell everyone it is.

$25 is a steal compared to this, I spilled triple digits to get a skin. Pissed is an understatement.

You chose to put all that investment into it.

There’s a difference between ANet stealing your money and you throwing it at them out of pure arrogance.
