More Halloween Goodies
I failed stats and probability. Absolutely horrible at it. But i still understand odds to some degree. If a single item has a single use, and it’s odds are .001%, your odds do not get better. You have another chance to see if you are the .001%. It’s still a .001% chance every time. How does that give better odds?
Ultimately, this is about customer satisfaction, and the emphasis that ArenaNet is willing to place upon it regarding this particular scenario. I guarantee you that this is not what Mike O’brien wanted his company to be viewed as by anybody. Not a single person. That’s the image HE wanted for his company. It’s part of the reasons he left Blizzard to found ArenaNet.
@Kimbald.2697 If you read my other posts on these forums, I’m far from the type of person to blindly defend anet. I just got off a forum suspension for quite the opposite.
However I just disagree with these people. I think they’re use to other games where things are handed to you. I understand what you think their expectations were, I don’t understand their responses. If they thought they were going to be given these items with such good odds. Why did they feel the need to spend hundreds of dollars on keys before hand?
They got better odds, when they were given extra chests to try to open. Even if the technical odds remained the same the act of opening extra free chests gave them better odds.
Nice to see you argue instead of spout oneliners that aren’t even in one line
I stand corrected on your white knight status.
Seriously, not being clever here. I just can’t follow many of the things you said here. My only way of placing them was assuming you tried to defend the game.
To the question: why did they spend hundreds of dolars beforehand?
I would say: because they trusted arenanet to be handing out holliday gifts by giving a fair droprate.
It was the excitement following how Anet announced the shinies in the boxes for the event.
‘a chance’ and ‘unique’.
Not ‘rare’ and not anything else that would have suggested it was just the same droprates normal chest items had.
It all sounded like fun for the holidays!
And if you get a second lottery ticket for free, you are indeed given better odds in some way. (not mathematically I think, but for each person it’s another chance for the same)
But do you really think that was what people expected it to be this time around?
It sounded like ‘ooh sorry, we’ll make up for this mess’ to me.
While it was: ’here’s another, now shut up’.
(edited by Kimbald.2697)
Anet heard their cries and gave them all second chances with the mad king chests. By then they should have understood the odds. They played again, and continued to cry when those didn’t pan out. How can you say this isn’t people with entitlement issues?
By then they had already paid there money. It didn’t matter if they gave the odds after your money was spent.
Hey there win a prize!! (after money is given and the person loses then give them the chances are .001 or .01 chance to win….) oh sorry chances were low here try one more time… problem fixed. Sorry that is failed logic.
All right lets assume ANET decides to completely bow to the customers here. They drop skins for every chest opened by players. How many people you think are going to come back on here and complain? They now have the skins they want but they are worthless to sell on the market and they have too many. If they would have known they would get so many skins they wouldn’t have opened 20-100+ BLC’s.
I dropped $50 the night the event came out. I opened 40+ BL chests and got bupkis. I opened 20-30 MK chests and got some alright Halloween loot but no skins. Realizing the odds I dropped another $50 transferred gems to gold and bought the skin I wanted. I even bought another 10 keys are so just for giggles. I don’t feel they forced me to waste my money I made that choice myself. But I have played other mmo’s with similar systems and I played Combat Arms back in the day I do know how they can hook you. I have never felt ripped off. I have felt like a jack kitten more then once on the next day especially when I bought stuff after drinking. But I have felt that too just going to the bar and getting drunk enough to buy others drinks and drop large tips.
@Kimbald,
Alright, I’ll step back and change my opinion on the second chance part. I re-read some of anets postings on the matter. And it certainly did sound like they thought the chances were too low and then didn’t change them.
Soo the rewards are 28 candy corn, 3 account bound skele tonics and 3 account bound halloween tonics… Thats what I got for spending 2g40s on 2 keys to open 2 chests for 6 tonics to put into the new recipes… awesome.
See? You expect to get a skin guaranteed for opening TWO chests? This just shows how people don’t understand the concept of these BLChests (No offense) , which fueled the QQ storm on the forums in the first place. I’m still baffled how ANet gave in to this whole storm, but the damage has been done, no use making any effort there.
No I don’t mind not getting a rare skin. A 2g40s investment does not guarantee me a 300g skin. I was simply posting what I got quickly so others didn’t waste more money hoping it was a guarantee. What I’m not thrilled about is that I wasted 2 perfectly good account bound boosters that I could have used instead of blowing on essentially just tonics, which who gives 2 kittens about, and candy corn, which I could have mined myself or even purchased for a fraction of what I spent putting into the chest. They just aren’t understanding rewards. They don’t need to give me a super rare and expensive item, but they do need to give me something that’s not useless garbage.
Give me 1 of 1000 decent armor skins, but not the super rare one. They need new skins every month or so if they are replacing the gear ladder with getting cool skins.

Afaik it had nothing to do with the odds. The issue they tried to correct was that the contents of the chests, other than the skins, were not Halloween themed. The second round of chests allowed you to convert your non Halloween themed contents into Halloween stuff.

If you’re not raising the drop rate on the skins then this new recipe was a waste of your time.
Thank you! For not just giving everyone skins. It would have been like giving every kid a trophy while not keeping score.
This will hopefully not cheapen it for those already lucky enough to get drops.
They are holiday themed skins. What’s the point of having the event if only a few people can match the theme. It’s like inviting all your friends to a toga party then randomly letting one person wear a toga.

Wasn’t that the point of the costumes being sold though?
oh yeah, costumes! Right, i’ll slap that on and join WvW and…. oh… they’re town clothes… awesome

Lol, exactly which is why I didn’t buy one. But for the events happening in town they are holiday themed and everyone could enjoy them.
I’ll be honest I have not used town clothes once and probably never will unless there are trade skill bonuses attached that I don’t know about. I do wish they would have kept that like GW’s and left them armor based.

I love this analogy.
Sure I guess someone who spent a lot of money should get a gold or pink toga to show off their wealth, but everyone should have a decent chance of getting a toga.

Sorry you didn’t get an answer before. The Mad King Chests will not be craftable after the Halloween Event is over.

I’am purely speculating here but,I seriously cannot believe Arenanet Punched in a less than 2% chance for a halloween item .
I see today players are seeming to get drops from reported reasonable amounts of chests opened .
So here is my theory ,When they implemented the patch the drop rates were incorrect ,and players eager to get halloween items jumped into the gem store and kept spending believing that they would eventually get something and be the first to wear the new items .
By the time Arena net realised the issue many had posted that they in some cases had spent 50,70 even $100 + ,remember every one these items were cosmetic only costumes ,they spent the money to get into the spirit of the event they did it purely to have fun ,and support their favourite game developer.
I feel Arenanet may have now altered the drop rate but cannot publicly announce their was a bug initially .
These loyal customers whether right or wrong feel negatively after this experience .
Whether the drop rate was or was not intentional at 1.8% I think the community even the fan sites agree that was not appropriate for a fun cosmetic halloween costume with no real usefulness at any other time of the year .
I did not purchase a key but I can understand how betrayed these individuals feel ,I personally believe that to rectify the good faith these players had I would publish the bug if it is one and apply the correct drop rate then calculate based on the amount of gems spent on keys how many of the halloween related items you intended them to receive .
It would surprise me very much if Arena net really did intend that players spending more than say $15 would not receive anything let alone those that spent a reported $100 + in gems .
I do not believe every post I read but when one of your fansites "gamebreakertv " has a presenter broadcast in a very nice way that she purchased 70 keys and received no halloween related items and while she says she is really happy she will never fall for it again ,it certainly supports the posts here on the forum .
Please admit and release information that the drop rate was indeed a mistake and give these players the correct keys with the correct drop rate coded in .
I sincerely believe anything less will hurt the game in the longer term .
This post is meant with the best of intentions and it’s intention is to offer a solution ,this game has the foundations of something great I would hate to see the feelings this has created ruin the potential.
Anet i just want to know if we will able to put Killstreak Experience Boosters in the mystic forge
More junk for the rich players… well at least ANet is being the same as every other company.

You might want to rethink that, actually, because the issue here is LUCK. And luck is a bit of an equalizer between rich and poor. While it is true that the ‘rich’ can sway the odds a bit in their favor, many of the complaints here on the forum come from the ‘rich’ who thought that they could brute force luck and failed. And as you can see, they are very, very angry about it because the rich are not used to being told “NO”.

Really? People can’t complain about buyers remorse without it degrading into posts that sound like an essay on marxism? Talk about over-thinking this stuff.
I wonder how silly the rage posters feel that quit or tried to fraud a refund, since all the new content is fantastic. I got 2 exotics in the first 20 minutes! :O

You are pushing your agenda very aggressively here and defend your right to do so. I would ask you to respect my right to give my viewpoint without labeling my post as degrading or marxist.
And you’re the one wanting Arenanet to hand out skins to everyone. So if anyone is a ‘commie’ here, that would be those on your side.

Here’s something worth considering.
My suggestion to the devs is to make the BLC other loots to be worth the money.
There was one mmo I once played which has RNG gambling with real money too. They handled it better. No one complaint for not receiving the top prize. People spent hundreds who didn’t get the top prize but still feel satisfactory. The top prizes chances are less than 1% like this game too. However, the other loots from the boxes are really worth the money. They even partition it to top prizes, rare prizes, uncommon prizes and common prizes. Their common prizes doesn’t even make them feel punished.
In GW2, the non-prize loots in the chests feel like an extra baggage that reduces my bag slots (very punishing). Furthermore, those items have no solid use too (seriously node tools with 10 uses? extra boosters which is least demand?). It’s punishing instead of rewarding. This game is new which I understand. They can still work towards improvements dealing towards RNG with real money in the future.
And this too.
1) The misc loots in “Black Lion Chests” are punishing instead of rewarding. After I tried few chests, I can’t stand it anymore how it takes up my precious inventory slots. The loots are terrible too. RNG real-money gambling should learn from mmo like Granado Espada (Asia). They’re fun, rewarding and players doesn’t mind spending hundreds of dollars. They have many tier prizes instead of just top prize and junks. I suggest the dev to do some research on the game I mentioned to pick up some good elements dealing with RNG + money = Fun.
2) Players shouldn’t complain too much about the chests because it’s a personal choice. The chests gambling to get super rare exclusive skins are good but I agree that they should’ve handled it better. I doubt they would change it at the middle of the event because it won’t be fair towards players who achieve/bought the exclusive weapon skins beforehand. Let them improve. It’s their first attempt on this.
I do believe that the inclusion of mid-tier rarity rewards may actually serve well to placate players, so they will not feel punished, with the deep, sinking emptiness in their stomachs, and instead have something rare, but not super rare, to walk away with.
A fine example will be an online Japanese card game I was playing, that provides special holiday themed event cards or packs you can buy during certain holidays. There are five different rarity for cards, one star (Common), two stars (Uncommon), three stars (Rare), four stars (Rarer), five stars (Super Rare). Buying one pack gives you a couple of one star and two stars, but guarantees you a three star card at least, with a chance of getting a five star card. I was actually quite satisfied pouring a reasonable amount of money (somewhere upward to hundreds) into the game because I was actually getting something useful and worthwhile out of it.
Now, if we were to apply the BLC concept to the card game pack, it will be quite similar to opening a pack and only finding one stars (judging from player sentiments about the default BLC rewards), with a chance of getting a five star super rare card. That makes the “chance” the only thing people are paying for, instead of the rewards itself. That can be quite punishing indeed.
Another suggestion I have to build onto what I’ve just mentioned, is to actually allow the certain unique combination (mystic forging) of several mid-tier rarity items, into more unique super rare items. That way, even if players may feel the mid-tier rarity items not as useful, they’ll still have a definite chance (provided they’ve collected the right components), to get something very rare and rewarding as well.
Finally, I’d like to remind you good folks who are still debating on the subject on how bad the BLC is, and drawing comparisons to bad restaurant food and the likes, that the Black Lion Chest came with its full original content and rewards, plus a chance at getting the Halloween skins. That means the skin is an added on bonus. If you’d have bought the chest before the event, you’ll be pretty much getting the same thing, minus the chance of a skin. Perhaps the real issue here, is that the BLC contents are simply not worth the gem cost, skin or no, and that may be something ArenaNet might want to look into.
I couldn’t read all of this as 25 pages eats into my game time. Let me tell you a little bit about one of your players. I’m Lisa, 48 and single. I have a dog and two cats. I was in college before the internet was born and it was a way for us students and staff to communicate. I fell in to video games easily and have played from the day Pong was born. I care for my elderly Mother.
My Mother had a close call in March, CPR, intubation and ICU for over three weeks. But it’s all good, she’s doing great. I had to take out a $20k loan on my own paid for home to pay off her hospital bill. Following me here? I can’t do hundreds of dollars of gems. Catch me in a couple years, but by then I’ll have moved on to another game. But, being a gamer, I’d love to have neat and cool things too. But I struggle just to have money to pay repairs. But see, I give away that which my friends need, I don’t charge them. They need a new backpack, I’ve got your back. You need anything, it’s yours. I love them, I’ve played with these people for going on ten years now. They have jobs, babies and lives. Do you only cater to people that pay you? We could take up a collection so one of us could have something nice. Why should we be penalized for our lack of kitten and playing just for fun? Isn’t that what games are for? As for me, been 80 for a long time and on the way there with alts but I wear a mix of green and yellow. My two gold can’t afford more than that. And, if you read this far. Speaking of kitten could you get rid of the blue WvW dot in PVE! God kitten thing sticks on my map regardless of where the person actually is.
I’d just like a list of All the items in this event so we know what’s available. Why can’t I find one? Then I can start worrying about how to obtain them. Right now I think many of us are confused and in the dark. And, most likely will be by the time the event is over.
(edited by DeWolfe.2174)
I want the RNG factor removed altogether from this sort of thing, or at least the option to buy skins for a higher gem price than the cost of a few keys. When I pay money (gems) for something, it’s because I know exactly what I’m going to get for the expenditure. If I don’t know exactly what I’m going to get (RNG chance) then I’m not going to spend anything.

You sound like a nice person Lisa, but what is your point?
Not everyone spends lots of time and RL money in the game to get good stuff. If your gamer friends are such good friends they should be giving you stuff too.
I got a Ranger to 80 got Exotics and then dropped it when the nerf came into effect. Most of my gold for the gear was farmed the hard way.
Now I play a 25 Warrior and a few others leveling up very slowly with what I can afford from in game. My biggest splurge was for the Witches outfit which thank goodness is account bound not soulbound.
Just play and have fun. Most of the expensive stuff are just skins and aren’t as cool to the other players as the wearer may think.
PS: a level 80 should be able to earn at least 1G per hour of playing even with repairs. if you die too much you may be in too hard a zone, go down a few levels. Also, you may want to rework your traits and weapons. Makes a big difference. Unless you are a Ranger, the nerf hit my build so badly I stopped playing it except to go to newbie zoneswith friends.

Really happy with the way things are going now. Black Lion Chests gave me nothing (opened about 15) but then they turned to being mats for Mad king chests, which totally made my day. Really good work a-net(got the Greatsaw Greatsword ). Now the Act 2 is amazing, however the only thing is I really hope you include in the upcoming acts is the remaining 5 armor pieces threw events (equally challenging as the Mad tower). It would be really nice to not have to spend my hard earned money on an inflated price of 12g+ for non unique armor. :P
BLC gave me nothing. MKC gave me nothing. Lotsa junk. Not much fun. Typical drop rates for Anet though as history shows. Glad I didn’t spend a dime on those keys.
all these people complaining how all these exoctics are for the rich players, trust me, they’re not, with just over 1 gold i managed to come across the crossroads staff in the skele champ chest. stop complaining so much and if you really want these exoctics go farm some gold. none of the anet staff ever said that their was a certainty of getting something out of the chests, they said there was a chance. Its a gamble if you spend real money on keys.
other than that, i do agree that there should be better loot drops out of the chests in general, so that people do get something out of them instead on stupid tonics and boosts no one wants.. but seriously, everyone knew that the loot was crap from the beginning so dotn go on how you spent 100+ bucks on keys when you could of just transferred your gems to gold and buy them off the TP
I can understand that certain items needs to be kept at a low drop rate for the sake of keeping them unique and exciting, but I have to say that I have never regretted spending money on a game as much as I have in the last few days of this event. I enjoy GW2, but I openned nearly 30+ chests, if not more, and I got a shoulder skin or two that made me a little over 2 gold. With the money I spent on keys, I could have bought far more gold than that. Yes, it was my choice to spend the money, and I can tell you that it is the last time I spend money in this game on the gem store, which I actually enjoyed up until this event. Maybe I should have done more research, waited on other people to screw up so I could read about it on the forums, but I was excited. Now I am not that excited to log in at this point, because I feel as though I was mislead in some way. Maybe I was, and maybe I wasn’t, but I certainly regret it….
Is this only mystriouse tonics and not the tons of named tonics I go from most of my black lion chests
Do you guys feel Anet overdid it with drop nerf? I’m in MK’s realm most of the day and I get only bones for it and some candy stuff but no more greens, blues or any drop that would actually keep me here…
I’m not talking only about chests, regular mobs drops also…
So its not just me then. I thought it was my usual REALLY bad luck with drops that was casueing it. I guess they can’t have people geting anything nice to stop the farmer/bots. Not that it does of course. All i got was junk drops too.
I suppose they could make drop rates based on wealth. :P
I went to Cursed Shore just to see if it was me and guess what drops are just fine there but as soon as I go back to MK realm it all goes to hell…:(
If they did that esturk it should be raining ectos for me since i have about 5 gold in total over 5 toons.
They always over do it with the nerfs. I’m just waiting for them to nerf all the drops in orr, but i guess because there’s so many people there and you rarely have a chance to tag a mob to even get a drop, I guess it evens out for them.
Dragonbrand – Level 80 – Human Ranger
Come on guys, if you weren’t there exploiting for the first few hours then you aren’t allowed to get any drops.
Don’t you know how this game works?
There’s a running saying in my guild,
“There’s no farming in Guild Wars 2, because it is not allowed.”
Just another example of something that may have been a touch overpowered being nerfed into silliness.
Outright kills any desire I ever have to play this game.
I enjoy doing it because the candy corn monsters are so adorable but I, too, missed out on the exotics and never got anything better than greens from the chests or monsters.
-Mike Obrien, President of Arenanet
Why is everyone crying so much? The Labyrinth takes no effort to get to whatsoever and the mobs are killed easily because of the zerg of people. Do you expect to get 10 exotics a day for killing a champion that spawns in a place accessible to level 1’s who get boosted to 80 with 50 other people hitting the boss? I don’t understand this forum’s logic at all.
Why is there always a fan boy coming out to tell ppl on this forum that they are expecting to be given something when they most times just try to discuss things that could be broken/made better in game? And my logic tells me event map should have drops at least as regular map. So when I go to Orr and zerg Grenth with 50+ ppl and get my bags full of golds/greens/blues in 10 minutes ‘coze event failed and on the other hand spend 2h just before that in MK relm and have 29 porous bones and 15 candy drops to show for it yes I will come to game forum and talk to rest of the community about it? I don’t understand what is not logical to you about it?
Lol. One or more threads about the labyrinth has been merged into this one, which was about the Black Lion chests.
Oopsie.

too bad your halloween goodies have a chance of not dropping with a 24 hour cooldown period on them.
Know what I say to that? LOLNOTHX.
