To put you in context, I play with a satellite connection meaning that I cannot get less then ~600ms of latency. I have been playing Guild Wars 2 since launch and never had any problem with the content or anything. Most people can’t even tell that I play with such high latency (until I teleport everywhere after you knockback or pull me).

Since HoT, I have to deal with a frustration that is the activation time of the glider. When I try to deploy the glider, it won’t activate until I fall for the value of my latency at that moment. Players with good average ping will not understand how frustrating it is since they can almost instantly deploy it while holding spacebar. Not only that, for some jumps (easy jumps), I have to rely on mesmers to portal me and one of them was for the storyline.

What happen now is :

1- I jump from the cliff while holding the space bar still
2-I stay in the air long enough to deploy the glider (in my screen)
3-I cannot deploy the glider because my character isn’t really there in reality(this is the version of my character affected by latency) so I fall for approximately 600ms
4-My glider deploy but I lost too much altitude and cannot reach the updraft or the ledge

What I would like to happen is:

1- I jump from the cliff while holding the space bar still
2-I deploy the glider almost instantly (in my screen)
3-The version of me that everyone else see (the one affected by latency) mimic what happened to me at the second step
4-I get into the updraft in my screen or the ledge
5-In the case of the updraft I get propel in the air 600ms later or everyone see me reach the ledge after that time.

I know this is possible because they did almost the same thing with daredevil’s grandmaster dodges. In the beta, the dodges were affected by the latency meaning that I have to wait almost 1 second before I see my character dodge in my screen. Since launch I tried daredevil not hoping for much difference from the beta but it was quite the opposite. Now I can dodge and see it instantly in my screen then the effect of the dodge kicks in after the value of my latency which is what I was expecting at first before the beta.

Knowing that they can make such change, I wonder why they did not apply that logic to the activation of glider. It would make gliding a much better experience. I think it is an improvement that will benefit us all, not only those with high latency. Just think at times where you get lag spike during an important jump and miss it because somehow your ping increased for few seconds.

I feel your pain. Totally. I’m on that part of the story where you have to jump off the ledge to hit the updraft to continue after your buddies. I’ve been at it an hour now, tried running and holding spacebar from both ledges, different times, and my friend says she sees me go right through it, but all I see is that it doesn’t deploy until I’m well below the updraft. Quite disappointing as I only preordered specifically to come back to the game to play with my son and friends. OP, did you ever get past that part of the story, and if so, how? Thanks

Yeah i felt the pain when i got some high ms recently. The glider could get some improvements with deployment.

What happens in 2nd step is the client is expecting the information from the server about the character is indeed in air before deploying.

So what you suggesting will let client will deploy glider no matter the server is currently telling and deploy the glider. And then server will validate your gliding after 600ms and let you continute what you doing in client before rubberbanding etc..

Actually this is what happens when you change location on x-y axis currently.When you walk with high ms, you dont get constantly rubberbanded, the server is just keep validation you location with a 600ms delay and let do your move on the client without making rubberbanded. However people see your location with a delay of 600ms(roughly).

I believe this can be derived to behaviour of deploying the glider.

Yes i got past that part, with the help of a mesmer’s portal. I discovered later that I could take an alternate way via the eastern pylon. There is a cliff that you can access northeast of the updraft after you completed all the events and the bridge is active. You will need Lean Techniques to be able to catch the updraft in time. If you have a similar latency to me you should barely get it.
