I don’t think there’s a conflict here – game design has long since moved on from pass/fail mechanics towards something that’s more accommodating to different skill levels. Having leaderboards and multiple levels of success is an excellent way for a player like Monika to have fun with her little one and complete a bite-sized challenge, while testing a player like Marcus to do the same thing optimally. Forcing players like Monika to step through graduated levels of challenge isn’t going to be satisfying for either her, as she’s said, or for players like Marcus, who can’t just get straight to the good stuff.

You mean the mini games they said would be in the different cultural cities when the game launched? Guess they decided instead of doing what they said at the launch of the game they would just wait and charge you for it later. Good old Anet.

From what I heard, there was problems getting Polymock to work properly in the current framework as opposed to how it worked in GW1 so it wound up cut for time and then never gone back to pick up.

Like so much other stuff they wanted to put in and opted not to. R.I.P. Lore entries or the old area loading screens with small text blurbs . . .

I remember Colin mentioning in an interview a few months ago that they aren’t working on Polymock at the time. I remember quite well because I was pretty disappointed when I read it.

I remember asking someone about it and they pretty much said what I did – technical issues, then “we don’t have time”.

It’s sad, but there is only so many hours in the day and so many people who are around to work on this stuff.

My 2c is take heavy inspiration from the Mission Packs from Guild Wars 1. Not for all Adventures mind you. But some of my favorite things were in that mission pack, specifically the Togo mission. It was nice to break from the normal pace of the game and do something that thematically fit together and offered fun challenges along the way. I would also like not all Adventures to be timed, but for some to offer better rewards if you solve them in an efficient or cunning manner. I believe it has been stated before that there is some inspiration from Metroid and Castlevania in the Masteries system. I would love to see some of that also appear in Adventures.

Maybe have a few gathering missions. Some odd turn in items to increase defense or offense of a structure. could be junk items that you get from killing creatures in the area. could be low to med grade crafting materials. which builds up your personal standing with said group and offers rewards. As for rewards maybe reusable weapon kits examples being whip kit that can be reusable from inventory. Always did like the whip skills and wondered why they didn’t show up in the game. there are some nice weapon kits that you get during personal story and heart locations that would love to see as possible rewards.

You should probably base some adventures on the random silly things players do for fun on their own like:

1. No Armor race: I remember running through southsun in a naked relay race with some guildmates, it was quite hilarious and awesome.

2. Hide and seek: Might become stupid when Dulfy inevitably puts up a guide with all the hidden locations but a fun hide and seek game might be a good fit for a silly adventure.

3. 1v1 Duels with NPCs. Just a simple boss fight only the adventurer can participate in. Given how popular soloing existing world/dungeon/etc bosses is already, I imagine this would be a hit. Don’t be afraid to make a couple of these hard.

That’s all I can think of but honestly if players are already doing it for fun anyways, it’ll be a good fit for adventures. O ya and do that hand gliding race idea, that sounds like fun.

Even if it’s not an official minigame/adventure launched with HOT (and it really should be), Ive already told my guild we WILL be doing hang gliding races, even if its just seeing who can fall the fastest without dying-.

Burning X vines in T seconds is not an adventure, it’s a challenge.

The Skritt puzzle in Silverwaste is an adventure, unexpected mini-dungeon is an adventure, even a classic dungeon path is an adventure.

We can have challenges on top of adventures, like the best time in a puzzle or a dungeon. Even challenges only for the competition is fine, but thing must be called with the right name.

Burning X vines in T seconds is not an adventure, it’s even the contrary. When i go washing my car i don’t think “Let’s wash it in less than 10 min, it’s such an amazing adventure !”.

People are getting way to tied up on semantics and what to call them. They obviously called them adventures simply because the other logical terms were already taken in game and they didn’t want to cause confusion between game types.

Reality is, it doesnt matter what they are called -that isn’t important, nor is it the (actual productive) topic of this thread.

I wouldn’t say that, to be honest. People build certain expectations when they are presented with a term, and many might get disappointed fast.

I think the best terms are challenge or activity, both of which already have meaning through other pieces of GW2 content, meaning there would be actual confusion. “Adventure” isnt perfect and it does come with a deeper meaning, but I dont see a need to change it.

Regardless of what they are called, it is an interesting system that fits well with the direction they seem to be going. I also agree with many that the example in the POI was extremely simplistic, but I think the intent was to showcase the system more than the content.

Thinking about the potential for a system like this is exciting and introduces a potentially new aspect to GW2 gameplay. It isnt anything revolutionary or groundbreaking, but it should still add fun to the game – which is the one thing I care most about.

it’s probably like Guild Missions, some are more challenging, some not so much. All of them become a challenge when you try to beat your friend’s highscores.

Having to do jumping puzzles in a certain time certainly sounds challenging enough to me. When I think of an adventure at skipping stones, I’m gonna have a hard time.

Given that the expansion isn’t released yet you guys have the chance here to give your feedback on what you’d like to see in Adventures.

Bear in mind that the we what we’ve seen so far is content tuned for the show floor being played by someone who’s already had a few tries.

First and foremost, if the content for adventures is mini-games, JPs, and contests then they should not be called “Adventures”. This is misleading. They are challenges.

Calling them adventures leads people to believe that they are quests or missions akin to GW1 style of play.

If an adventure opens up to finish a JP in a certain amount of time….that’s not an adventure…its a challenge.

Personally, I’d like to see more actual adventures show up and fewer challenges. Surviving a pub brawl isn’t really an adventure. If a new NPC shows up and wants me to help them defeat a new boss that will spawn in a cave to rescue his daughter or some such trope…that’s an adventure.

For me, an Adventure makes me think of:

o Solo or Group play

o Lost treasure, Hidden bandits, kidnapped Princess, etc

o “It was a dark and stormy night…”

o Cut Throat party of NPC’s – Trust No One

o Secret doors in the Crypt

o “Second star on the right. Straight on ’till morning”

For me, an Adventure makes me think of:

  • Burn as many plants as possible in 3 minutes!

Naw, you’re right it’s an odd name for this type of activity alright “Challenge” seems to be more suitable but “Guild Challenges” already exist so I presume they’re just trying to limit confusion.

1 – Monster hunting witcher style!

You must first learn about the monster: What are its habits? Where does it live? What are its strenghts? What are its weaknesses?

Then you must prepare: What tools do I bring? What time should I strike? From where should I attack?

Then go there and score your kill, go back and sell the trophy.

I like this idea, particularly if you could attach it to these lesser-known critters.

That sounds pretty tight, especially if it involves some brutal animations. Imagine weakening the monster, and then using a special finisher (similar to pvp finishers, but more violent) in which your character slams his or her fist into the monster and rips out the trophy part (sort of like gathering Mordrem tendons/kidneys/spleens/eyeballs in the Silverwastes, but instead with some special animations).

Can’t wait for Witcher 3 to come out, and I don’t see any shame in GW2 taking a page from it.

As far as adventures go I do enjoy a heart to complete, it’s like a mini quest for me to do without having to go too far off of my current objective. However, I do miss the traditional side quests in Guild Wars. It would just allow the players another option and fun activity to help level up their characters. Now if it as at all possible, it would be awesome to also have side quests with different options to choose within that side quest much like we get with the primary missions we have now.

Thank you ArenaNet, I am a huge fan of Guild Wars 2 and have logged a lifetime of hours into my several characters, I am super excited for the upcoming expansion to the game and hope for more to come.

When I think of an “adventure”, only one in particular comes to mind: the Super Adventure Box.

Other than that, without seeing any such “adventures” in action to set the parameters (one which wouldn’t be mistaken for a simple dynamic event, and assuming they aren’t meant to be that), it’s difficult to establish what types I’d like to see. Are these simple trials or activities? Are these modified Events or Event chains? are they related to Renown Heart activities in style or format? Are they to be mini games in their own right, like certain missions in, say, Saints Row or Shadow of Mordor? I need some further details, please.

Please no jumping puzzle type things no crystals like first part of dry top. I have avoided that first section like the plague after doing it the required one time. There are many people who avoid dry top just Cuz of those ridiculous crystals Jp type things. Any Jp type thing should be kept within a Jp not part of story or activity or adventure

There was information on the PoI livestream, if you missed that dulfy has you covered:

http://dulfy.net/2015/02/06/gw2-poi-heart-of-thorns-gameplay-livestream-notes/

She goes into more detail there but, briefly, Adventures are marked on the map and in the world in a similar way to a Vista does now. They are repeatable, standalone activities that you can start whenever you want. They’re meant to be challenging and have their own leaderboards (speed or score based). Because they’re challenge based they’ve added button that teleports you back to the start so if you’re going for a high-score/good time and you mess up your attempt you can just restart quickly.

Examples are, shooting galleries, races, JPs and so on.

Sanctum Sprint shows that a racing game would be well possible to do in GW2 and make it competitive, too.

Only thing SS needs to change is the Light Travel pickup. That needs to be available only to the last player in the race and only if he’s more than 1 waypoint behind the next.

I would love to see the following adventures:

1: Have adventures with one of the 3 factions. (Order of whispers should be a stealth mission. Priory about Lore and Vigil about warfare)
2: Find the bounty: Have a certain ammount of time to find somebody and kill it.
3: Help with rebuilding an outpost/ship/town and actually see the difference when you are done. (Gather materials)
4: Kite adventures: Fly through 10 checkpoints.
5: Whack-a-Mordrem: A huge hammer and some Mordrem to bash in
6: Maguuma explorer: Get a scanner and find rare plants/species. (once scanned you will get lore info)

Group challenges/adventures of two types. First, an on going continuous challenge new players can jump into and assist, or hop out to a safe zone any time they need a break, and jump back in again when they can. Second, registration challenges for 5 to 8 to 20, or maybe even more people, that can be started by an individual, party, or a guild, and once enough players sign up for it, a countdown begins, then everyone loads into the challenge and it begins.

A continuous challenge might be keeping a herd of cattle safe and healthy in a valley. Ogres come down from the hills to swipe cattle, so you can stop them and/or rescue cattle. You can do that with your normal skills, or use a scoped sniper rifle from the roof of the ranch house. Or you could get transmuted to a herding dog and keep strays closer to the herd, or move to whole herd towards better grazing to improve their health. No win state nor fail state, just better rewards for doing better and easy to join or leave at your convenience.

A registration challenge might be twenty people need to move supply carts down a long canyon to a town at the end. The faster you complete it the better your score. You get attacked from the canyon walls, things like boulders can damage carts, slowing them and needing repairs. Some people need to climb the canyon wall to protect carts from there. Cart drivers get a special skill bar, but may also need to get out and defend on foot. There might be safe zones along the way to stage carts, so different strategies of how many carts you take at a time, and how far. These events should have leaderboards!

Continuous challenges are great for casual players with limited time. The biggest advantage of a registered event is it can load everyone once you have the number of people the event is designed for, and then the event leader can kick it off when you’re done pre-strategizing. (Too bad triple-trouble isn’t a registered event. Would save so much time; who has time to literally spend an hour before an event just to organize and get everyone loaded into the same map? Which is what it takes!)

I gotta say, i was really excited when i first heard about the whole adventures concept, but what i’ve seen in gameplay so far has been extremely dissapointing to be perfectly honest. When i heard adventures i thought i was going to be going out on an epic quest, not repeatedly burning vines with a flamethrower. Don’t get me wrong, im sure they’ll be great for awhile, but their nothing more than glorified renown hearts. If you ask me what I want in an adventure, I want an open world extension of the story, i want things like mini dungeons and jumping puzzles and hidden boss events. I want a story based objective, i want to do something fun and memorable.

Whoever said “trials” was a much more accurate name earlier in this thread i could not agree with you more.
