This question has probably been asked quite a number of times, but I’m not sure where to start looking or what to type to find such a question.
As of now, there are 3 ways to buy Heart of Thorns. The preorder packs cost $50, $75, and $100, and give some exclusive incentives for paying more. The $50 pack includes Heart of Thorns and the core game, and has the incentive that veteran players who own the core game already get a free character slot for prepurchasing.
$50 is a little out of my price range for an expansion, though. I’d gladly pay that much if I didn’t already own the Core game, but I’ve owned it since Beta. I remember the days where game expansions cost anywhere from $15-$30, and I can’t stomach paying $50 for a part of a game I already own with the income I have right now.
Are there going to be any plans to include a cheaper Upgrade edition of Heart of Thorns only for people who already own the Core game after release? I remember for the longest time there was an option to use Gems to upgrade to a higher priced version of GW2 to unlock the Mistfire Wolf elite skill and the other perks. I think it’d be fantastic if such an option were made available.

This has been discussed many, many times on the forum, on other forums, on the official site and in the games media. Most of the discussions from the forum have been merged into this topic: https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/hot/HoT-Price-Feedback-Base-game-included-merged
$50 is the price for HoT on it’s own. The base game is included free for those who don’t already have it but the expansion would cost exactly the same either way.
So no, there are no plans to reduce the price for people who already have the base game, or they would have been selling it for less right from day 1.
It might, at some unknown point after release, be available cheaper (most likely through 3rd party retailers who may want to get rid of excess stock) but we don’t know when or where or how much it will cost.
It’s an expansion. Every edition is an upgrade edition.

You do remember that the Upgrade version to the core game in the Gem Store requires the purchase of GW2 first, right? It’s the same deal with HoT – gotta have at least the standard version first.
Which means you’re either hopin’ for a sale or you’re savin’ aside some money in order to just get the HoT standard version – at which point you can choose to upgrade to Deluxe for 2400 Gems.

But I wouldn’t hold your breath on them making it cheaper anytime soon. ANet does have a business to run, you know. -Sid

That’s a shame. I’ll have to find it at one of those 3rd party retailers mentioned. It’s actually on sale on G2A right now for $34, so I’ll probably end up picking it up from there.
I understand they have a business to run, but $50 is way too much for an expansion, I think. Guess I gotta deal with the price if I want the content, though.
It is more expensive than I was expecting.
I actually got around that by buying the Ultimate Edition. I buy gems periodically anyway so this was like buying £42.50 of gems in one go and then getting the Deluxe Edition for £37.50 which is about what I expected to pay.
But that only really works if you want the Deluxe Edition and buy gems normally.

Baby, they’re still getting their $50. No matter who you get it from. So, don’t lose any sleep over your purchase! You’ll get yours, ANet will get theirs, all’s good. -Sid

Didn’t mean it in that regard. V: If I’d be losing sleep over anything it’s over possible savings later on. That doesn’t seem like it’s gonna happen, though, so imma do my do and hope it works out in the end.
Thanks for the replies, guys. Keep doing what you do.

How are they getting their 50 bucks? if OP only pay 34 bucks from a country that have another economy so anet have to sell it cheaper to that countrys people?
