I’ve read quite a bit of complaining about how $50 isn’t worth one new map and class. Basically I’m thinking that some people are a bit confused about the content of HoT. Maybe because pre purchase is available they think that the thing’s almost done? I dunno. This is just to say that – for one thing – we still have probably only seen about a third MAXIMUM of what was announced to be in the expansion pack, we aren’t off this hype train yet! Secondly, if you don’t think that the price tag is worth what we’ve seen so far, just wait a while until they announce more or don’t pre purchase / buy the x pack at all. Anyways, there’s my rant. Just a reminder that there’s more HoT stuff to come.

The expansion somehow costs more than the base game, but it can’t possibly have more content than the base game. From what ANet has told us (not a whole lot, mind), and from what we have seen, HoT is worth 30 euros at most – and that’s a stretch already.

Moreover, they’ve very blatantly tried to kitten everyone over by changing the FAQ in the dead of night, resulting in a lot of people purchasing the base game in advance to prepare for the HoT prepurchase, only to find that it’s now a part of the prepurchase.

It’s scummy. It really is.

“Guild Wars 2 fans are big role-players, and
we love to give them the tools they need
to have big, important events!” Stop lying, ANet.

The expansion doesn’t cost more than the base game at launch though. Comparing a new expansion to a 2.5 year old game, when all games go down in price, is a bit strange to me. I’m pretty sure it sold for $60 when new.

Edit: Anyway if you consider expansions from most games as a percentage of the price of the main game and take into account how much content they add, there’s virtually always a massive imbalance.

At pre-purchase, the core game was $60 for Standard (renamed Heroic) edition, $80 for Deluxe, and $125 or was it $150? for the CE.

I don’t believe the price dropped for ~six months after release, and then to $50 and $70. The CEs were whatever prices the retailers could get for them, as ArenaNet never sold them on-site.

Eventually, the standard edition dropped to $40/Standard and $60/Deluxe, which is where it was until this last week, except for sales, (like the 75% off [$10.00 and $15.00, respectively] sales we had earlier this year).

But they’ve already said that all of the main features have been announced.

It is at the bottom. Not that we should ever trust their FAQ because they change it and lie whenever they feel like it.

With that said, if all the major features are already revealed and we’re just waiting on little details that doesn’t bode well for the expansion.

Think CE might have been $150, since Im fairly certain it was £120 over here

And yes it launched (in US currency) for $59.99 and then $79.99 for deluxe. It dropped by $10 in 2013

HoT effectively costs $60 to access the new class for most existing users (or throwing away dozens+ of hours of play on one of your 80s). So it’s pretty much identical in price in practice.

Historically expansions are typically 25-60% of the original game’s original price.

It’s fair to say HoT is a pretty expensive expansion for what it’s known to contain, which is to say “not a great deal”. Of course there may be a ton of stuff we don’t know about, or far more content than expected but the way Anet has been “managing expectations”, it seems like there probably isn’t.

Honestly I’m worried at this point that HoT will be GW2’s “Trials of Atlantis” (the infamous DAoC expansion), because it shares the two key traits with TOA. First off, the devs are very very secretive about what’s actually in it, and second off, it’s changing the entire endgame design from “do what you want” to “huge PvE mastery grind”. Hopefully not, but knowing so little, the similarities loom large.

But wasn’t GW2 originally marketed as a massive PvE grindfest? Oh, wait… I seem to remember some ‘manifesto’ about that…
