GW2 Expansion Compared to GW1
Neither were as long as Prophecies. Most of the skills in the game were either not used or used for very niche cases. The games are also very different due to the scale. A single GW2 map is at least twice the size of a GW1 map if not more. With how much depth they’ve been adding to the newer maps, I’d say it’s definitely on the more side.
Nothing wrong with comparing, but consider the differences in development, especially development times.
For example, we have no idea how long a GW1 map took to create vs a GW2 map.
Time is a river.
The door is ajar.
From another thread comparing the GW1 expansion (EotN) with HoT:
Eye Of the North introduced:
41 new armor sets, including rare, stand-alone pieces
We don’t know how many new armor skins will be added to the game with HoT however, since release they’ve added 9 new armor sets in the game, 6 on the gem store, 1 ascended, 1 PVP and 1 with achievements. All 9 have light, medium, heavy versions for a total of 27. There are also 3 different types based on race, Charr, Asura and the Others (Sylvari/Norn/Human are nearly the same) for a grand total of 81 armor sets. So, over the years they’ve added more armor sets (double the amount) to GW2 than an expansion did in GW1.
I’m willing to bet that HoT will have a LOT of new armor skins.
100 new profession-specific skills (10 per profession, none of which are elite)
The Elite specializations offer 1 healing, 3 utility and 1 elite per profession, that’s 32 new profession skills. We are also getting at least 2 (if off-hand) skills per profession, but some will get 3 skills (main hand) or even full 5 (2-handed). Moreover, keep in mind that GW2 skills are more compact than GW1 skills, they create chains and use the same slot, while GW1 skills (even chain skills) had to take individual slots on the skillbar. I think GW2 can easily have more than 100 new skills
50 new PvE only skills including 3 elite skills
12 new traits per profession, that’s 96 extra traits added in the game. Also, 7 Masteries, 39 total mastery abilities that are always available instead of selected.
10 new heroes
No concept like heroes.
18 Dungeons
No idea how many dungeons we will get.
124 new quests
No idea how many we will get
Aside from things that we don’t know about, GW2 gets more content than GW1. Let’s wait until we fill the gaps before making a full comparison.
Neither were as long as Prophecies. Most of the skills in the game were either not used or used for very niche cases.
Majority of the skills (well weapons) are not used in this game either…
Theres ALWAYS going to be a certain weapon/skillset that clearly outclasses another
One thing is certain, the build diversity doesn’t even come close to what it was in GW1

The reason it doesn’t has more to do with the difficulty of the game or rather the lack of. Once players get to a certain skill level, they can play as glass cannons while maintaining active defenses. This wasn’t something you could do in GW1.

I agree, but it also has a bit to do with lack of trinity. GW1 had a solid trinity system

Even if every profession got 5 new weapon skills that’d only be 32+40 = 72 new skills.

None. They already stated a while back that they were no longer working on creating new dungeons and had no plans to do so.
GW1 was just a great model for people that play games.
GW2 is more the model for people that want to pretend to be into games without actually having to deal with any gameplay to it.
Things change.
I’ll be on the look out for new blood in this type of game, personally. Someone to shake things up. The problem with any established company is their goal is money, money, money. When you combine that with entertainment though, it starts to strip away the nuance and delight.
