Soo.. I for once did not pre-purchase the HoT expansion, and I think most of us know why.
I was wondering, at it’s official release, will it be cheaper or will the price still be standing in stone as for those who were not pre-purchased the exp pack?

It would be really unfair if the price is still the same as it were at it first pre-release price. Or am I just wrong?

Not really. Most of us probably pre-purchased. Only the vocal nee-sayers didn’t.

How would it be unfair? I would be unfair towards all the people who pre-ordered and pre-puchased if the price was suddenly lower.

Why would it ever be cheaper…. Anet has made some questionable decisions during the development of HoT, but to betray those players that put their faith in the game they love by making the pre-purchase price higher than the retail price… That would be suicide.

I’m assuming this is a troll thread, because there is no reason whatsoever that the OP’s premise would be true.

Has anything you’ve bought in real life was cheaper on the very first day of release then it was pre sale if any?

That’s 3 years after release though. GW2 was the same price at release as it was before release.

I strongly doubt that HoT price will change right after its release, but after a while, lets say 8 months to around a year later, it will get a discount for sure.

I would be shocked and baffled to see a price drop around launch. It makes no sense and I’ve not really encountered much precedent for it either. It would only encourage people never to pre-purchase if the price would drop as soon as the game is released.

If it drops in price within the first year of life via Anet directly, I’d be surprised.

Yep, lots of times, indeed.
Let’s say, Xbox console, super expensive at it’s pre-purchase/official release, and then it will get lower in price every month/halfyear whats so ever.

usualy games that kickstart are cheaper to prebuy then at release I have never heard of the other way around

After some time HoT will probably get cheaper. We have no clue how long you have to wait and how much cheaper it will be though.

Xbox is a unique example. Any price drop post launch was in reaction to direct competition from Sony or to much lesser extent Nintendo. Sony and MS have long sought to own the market outright, so price cuts make sense from that business POV.

MMO’s do not seek to conquer the market in the same way or at least they use different ways to attract people to it and initial buying price is rarely a major factor.

Pre-purchase will give immediate access rather than wait the 3-6 months you just stated you expect a price drop to be

Pre-purchase gives other bonuses beyond the beta. If the launch price is the same (and almost guaranteed it will be) then paying for it at launch gains no benefit unless you are buying from a retailer who part exchanges.

Yes it possible while it all depends on Anet’s pricing strategy and competition of other games. IMHO I don’t see it much different from video card or console price wars.

Um, yes, the price it launches with should be the same as the pre-purchase price.
We may see a price drop/sale in 9-12 months, and people expect to see that, but a price drop at launch would be a really bad move.
If anything, pre-purchasers should be able to get things cheaper, not more expensive.
This is (for many) balanced by getting bonus stuff for pre-purchasing.

If I pay $50 for the game +2 char slots, then I can rationalize it as getting the expack for $30, as two slots are $10 each, so it feels like I’m getting a really good deal.
And since char slots are digital it costs them little to nothing to do that (you can argue that it costs a little dev time to program the slots to go with it, and the loss of those slots down the road, but if they weren’t going to buy the expack would they really buy slots? It’s definitely a complicated decision tree)

If then at launch the expack is $30, I no longer feel like I got a good deal, as that means I simply purchased a bundle.
And if it’s $30 and has slot/s?
I’ll feel like they took my loyalty and cashed in on it, and it won’t matter what other digital fripperies mine came with, I’ll feel ripped off, and it will probably be the last time I ever pre-order or pre-purchase from the company again.

I’m not sure what games you’ve seen charge more pre-purchase than at launch (I’ve never seen one).

And you have to buy the living story episodes that might get released aswell so count that into the price mate.
