I am not really surprised by 3.1 million number after the expansion, but am a little bit surprised by the 1.5 million active monthly users before free to play.

Ah, but that begs the question – exactly when GW2 had 1.5 active monthly users. In a month preceding HoT? At some holiday/LS events? Just after some of the biggest price cuts on the core? Or was that the peak number for the whole time since launch? Was that including China in calculations, or not? How many of those were alt accounts?

Who knows?

Regardless, active players are very likely to buy the expansion… I buy them no matter how good or bad they for the only reason to not have restriction or having less capabilities as other players do (falling behind) … my point being, in my opinion game doesn’t feel dead at all … there’s heaps of locked maps … even core areas have players… (feel like more than before HoT) and most players should be on HoT maps… and feels like they are… the fact that you find an empty map doesn’t mean there’s heaps of full ones…. even that happened before HoT, … people say there’s less people in dungeons…due to the nerf…probably.. but nerf was necessary HoT or not.

Edit: Only area that seems to have less players is WvW … probably people playing PvE content first, …. maybe the new maps… who knows… but once scribes reached max levels…. people will be wanting to use those things and population might be restored.

Most WvW guilds left ages ago simply because it wasn’t being supported. Some came back with the expansion hoping it would reinvigorate the gamemode but most have found it did nothing.

I tried WvW recently and feels more like a farming PvE area … farming because I found it very rewarding.. since the lack of players it’s very unlikely to find resistance to take an area… you just need a small group of peeps, some cheap blue prints.. and have the snowball take over half the map …. lots of rewards given, better than hours of PvE content.

T1 server here, used to spend at least 20-30mins a night in queues for random borderlands on Guild Raids, now every map is open to jump in any time I like, EB I might need to wait 10mins on reset. It’s desolate.

yeah that’s what I am saying… hence I called it another PvE area for farming… doesn’t mean game is dead, … WvW is neglected atm…that’s all… not dead tho.

They listed accounts at 7 million ish with the arrive of f2p. Not bad, that’s a 2 million increase from the last box sale numbers which were around 5 million. Now it could just be people logged in to see the changes to the core game with the arrival of HoT, but 3.1 is pretty impressive. That’s nearly half all accounts created, and even if they are duplicates that pretty impressive. BUT! While promising, it is an expansion bump and those numbers may drop drastically in a few months. I expect we won’t get any solid numbers until the quarterly report in January.

The numbers sound good. However from my personal experience all I have seen since HoT was released is more absentees in my guilds.

All my 4 guilds have generally different interests; the WvW guild was toast in the first few days. The dungeon/fractal runners are on life support with only a few left. The PvE guys/gals are still more or less still here, but they spend most of their time now in core tyria or farming the new areas for mats for the guild hall.

My point being if we are gaining more players at the expense of making our long term players leave, we have gained nothing. Now this is just from my point of view, but I am sure by the posts on the forum lately that am not alone in this observation.

Colin I believe gave the numbers of guilds completing GHs, if every guild that did it had the max 250 players, that would give us somewhere around 1.4m people buying the expansion. Our guild of 20+ did it, so take that as that absolute top figure (most guilds are not 250).

Although of those 20 I’m someone who also doesn’t have the expansion. I’d say Expansion numbers are sitting below 1m. Also saw a nice little reminder to buy the expansion popped up in the daily spot yesterday.

Max is 500 people.

Here is a personal anecdote about the game’s population.

I’ve done a lot of key runs over the last couple of years, I don’t know how many but I have hundreds of boosters in my bank, none of them bought from the gem store. During that time I was normally either the only person in the starter instance or maybe see one or two others. After the starter instance was megaservered I saw a small uptick in numbers of players in there. When the game went free to play it changed. At the spawn point there are always 3-6 other people standing there. Since I run straight to the boss and don’t do any objectives, I leave them behind. I’ll pass other people on my way and at the boss there are usually ~ 5 other people there. I don’t even bother to put on my low level key running gear in the starter instance any more because about half the time the boss is dead or dying by the time I get there. This has been going on day and night since the game went f2p.

Just one person’s observation, but it’s multiple incidences spread over a couple of years time.
