I would never, ever do that, I swear.

Although I like the idea of gliding in central Tyria, I am a bit sceptical how maps, that were not made with verticality in mind would be adapted to the gliding. How many invisible walls will have to be set up to prevent map break-outs? How many new issues will arise with those? Will up-drafts be put in old maps? Will gliding be on top of the Ley-Line gliding or a new mastery track? How will it affect players without HoT?

I have a sneaking suspicion that there will not be updrafts, ley-line gliding, or anything short of actual going down gliding. This will prevent a lot of bugs from happening, prevent the trivialization of JPs and other open world content, and if they want to avoid people going off maps, invisible walls like they already have would work for this for the few areas where gliding off large stuff could possibly lead you off the map.

Trivializations of JP’s can easily be solved by putting some sort of debuff in those areas so you can’t glide there, “strong winds” debuff or whatever.

Actually, I kind of expected this since beta of HoT. Back then, you could glide in Silverwastes Obviously, there is no technical restriction in gliding in old maps. It is all just about polishing geodata so players cannot fall out of maps. Plus, it would make zero sense if we couldn’t glide in next expansion. I expect Tengu, Primordus and fighting in air.

Yep. And that’s exactly it. A marketing strategy, nothing more. I wonder what story explanation they are going to give for suddenly everyone in Tyria being able to glide. In flat lands (barring mountains and structures). Probably there’s not going to be any story explanation (and yes, as a lore person that matters to me). Gliding in Magus Falls makes perfect sense. Outside of money, gliding in Central Tyria makes no sense to me. But it was to be expected, with the general response to gliding (I think it’s awesome too, but I’ve always said I hope they never implement it in Central Tyria).

Do what you like to keep the game alive and draw in more people (because that’s what we all want). But I hope we get the option to turn gliding off in Central Tyria. I, for one, am not going to use it, unless it is absolutely required (e.g. if they put new content in old maps that actually requires gliding, instead of it being a mere fun addition and a lure for non-expansion players to buy HoT).

How can it not make sense, your character develops a mastery skill which includes gliding but when you return to the other areas of Tyria you suddenly forget how to glide….that doesn’t make sense. That logic would mean you wouldn’t be able to use your elite specification either which is absurd. It’s a learned skill which was needed in the jungle that you take back to central Tyria with you, it is in no way shape or form lore breaking.

You’ve got a point. But it’s more like something fun to play around with than something that is of vital importance, like it is in Magus Falls. But next thing you’ll know they’ll develop content for Central Tyria that makes it necessary to glide. It wasn’t needed before and it shouldn’t be needed in the future either. I’m just hoping it will be limited to just this, being able to pop out your glider in the core maps and that’s it. We don’t need mechanics that make gliding there a mandatory thing. To me, that would feel more like a violation of the core maps than anything else. And since they basically will have to adjust the maps in some way when they introduce gliding, I just hope they won’t go overboard and add “new, cool stuff”. Save that for real new future content. It’s just a concern, that’s all. Because “more, more more!” and “gimme, gimme, gimme!” are basically the mantras of the current age.

The Desert Borderland would be much better with gliding as well, imo. It is a mess to navigate through on foot currently. Except they should let WvW players unlock WvW gliding through the WvW mastery point system (if they ever plan on adding it to the desert BLs).

At least no more dying to fall damage in central Tyria because you’re used to gliding I guess.

I do think it’d be funny to imagine like an air raid from the top of a structure onto attackers below, or retreating and jumping off a cliff to see gliders unfurl as the enemy tries to blast them down with CC and other attacks. If put into WvW it could open up a lot of things….or break them.

Except it won’t. I found a void in Kessex which let me swim under the map and port up to the highest point on any map and that was the first thing I tried to go to. Besides not having collision in the first place (try ground targeting the structure) there is also an invisible wall in front of it so it’s impossible to even reach in the first place.

And yet, there’s nothing in that news update about fixing any of the problems a lot of people have with HoT. I’ll enjoy the gliding (though it sounds like only the basic level will work), but I have to wonder if they’re even understanding the real problems that lead to them implementing a monthly login reward.

Really stoked about this. Might actually buy another character slot and create yet another character for 100% map complete just to use this.

I hope however they include a few vertical take off ley lines at most wp’s to get you into the air as soon as you portal to a wp. Gives a benefit a mastery so deep in the mastery tree that is rarely ever used.

I’m all for gliding in Tyria but we would need a reason to go there in the first place:

Increase the rare material drop in all of Tyria from foes and attribute different % for each mats on all the maps. Then perhaps people would go to farm it.

In general I’m afraid it’s going to create hundreds of bugs which you will have to fix for the coming year instead of focusing on what this game really needs: more instanced content for PvE, PvP maps and WvW fix.

Is Gliding actually a concern? It might be more trivial than we think. Since it uses a downward momentum, it probably wont let us reach anywhere we otherwise couldn’t simply using Ride the Lightning.

It will make some vistas easier in Orr though.

It’s probably more a concern for Anet developers. Depending on how well they scope the gliding and where you can glide. There lots of mountains\hills\high points that are totally inaccessible right now by foot that might become accessible through gliding to that point from another high point. If they did not make sure to provide the character collision code for all those upper areas, a lot of people could end up falling through the world map and\or getting stuck in weird areas. Still, I don’t think that’s going to be a big issue even if it does occur.

That logic would mean you wouldn’t be able to use your elite specification either which is absurd. It’s a learned skill which was needed in the jungle that you take back to central Tyria with you, it is in no way shape or form lore breaking.

As useful and enjoyable as I expect gliding in central Tyria to be, I’m a little concerned by this apparent change in the design philosophy of masteries. Encapsulating masteries within the scope of the expansion that introduced them was an inspired approach to introducing horizontal progression because it neatly avoids any potential complexity in the design of future content.

If future expansion content allows the use of masteries from earlier expansions, they must not provide any significant benefit or players that don’t have them would be strongly disadvantaged, making them more akin to vertical progression. But if they provide no benefit, then they become pointless.

Allowing some overlap in core Tyria is perhaps safe as it was designed and balanced without masteries, and new players can’t access expansion content or masteries before reaching level 80. So allowing gliding in central Tyria only will probably be fine as a special exception to the general concept of masteries. But if this is the first sign of a change to this concept, we have a huge problem.

why waste hours doing something that you get nothing for? Enjoyment? I’d rather run fractals.

Okay… lemme think off the top of my head JP’s made trivial by gliding…

1) Iron Mine is the easiest example where you do jump downward across numerous mine carts.
2) Glide from the lighthouse in LA four times to get the JP chests in Trolls Revenge.
3) Activate “saving” glider in the pirate JP in LA at the end.
4) Gliding in SW JP in spots instead of missing a beam/ledge that you need to fall to.
5) Glide from the cow tower in Ascalon area (that vista point after cow cannon) to the top of the JPs in both directions (maybe… not sure on distance but lean techniques, etc.).
6) That JP in the lava area of a volcano has parts that are downward overall.
7) Glide from start to end on the JP where you carry a bomb to the end past all those birds.
8) The JP(s) in Queensdale are all downward.
9) The pirate ship JP in Harathi… instead of pillars on the cliff-side, glide to boat from top of waterfall.
10) The JP in Metrica is all downward for each segment.
11) The JP in Sparkfly is also a downward (with some up if you went normal) from start to end.
12) The skipping rock JP in Southsun Cove would be easier in spots because you glide down over the stones.

Other things made trivial that are like JP’s:
1) Glide from top of JP in DryTop to anywhere in the map (like lost coins).
2) Glide around SW to get those golden badges (takes most people hours to do could now do in maybe one). Also lost coins.

Ok, I read that, but I was a bit unclear on it. I thought that there might be a separate gliding skill for Pact Tyria.

If future expansion content allows the use of masteries from earlier expansions, they must not provide any significant benefit or players that don’t have them would be strongly disadvantaged, making them more akin to vertical progression. But if they provide no benefit, then they become pointless.

I agree, but think about it, won’t people want to be able to glide in the new zones too? They’d need to do something about that. I would hope that they do offer some redundancy though. I hope that XPac 2, assuming it’s an above-ground one, would also include a gliding progression track, so if a player skipped HoT, he could still unlock that track using XPac 2 alone.

You realize this is a thread about gliding in Central Tyria right? This isn’t one of the many complaint threads about the xpac in general. I suggest you contribute in one of the threads about how HoT is terrible, or create your own (though there are plenty).

On topic – for those worried about Jumping Puzzles, the latest blog did explicitely state there were going to be “no fly” zones. I suspect these zones are almost exclusively created to keep those JPs in tact and with their integrity intact.

It’s better to keep your mouth shut and appear stupid than to open it and remove all doubt.

You might not need to. I see no indication that central Tyria will have leylines.

What’s keeping you from maxing it? I’ve managed to max everything but Nuhoch, as the last 12 points are not so easily come by. I’m going to have to hit up more adventures and hope I can do well enough to get the points. But I’m not that worried about getting chak acid removal, and it won’t matter if I am getting too much xp because after that last tier is trained I can’t use the xp anyway.
