I have to concur with the majority here… I have a small guild that I brought over from GW1, consisting of friends and family. In total we’re about 6 people. But it’s extremely rare to have more than two of us online at the same time. I’ve tried ‘grouping’ with strangers to accomplish something -such as a Fractal mission- and it’s almost always been a disaster. So no, I’m not thrilled with the idea of being forced into ‘alliances’. Yes, I’ve occasionally been lucky and come across some truly helpful individuals, but we’re talking maybe a 2% success rate. The other 98% has been horrible. NOT GOOD ODDS. Am I willing to jump in and help other small groups do their guild hall mission in return for reverse help? Of course. Do I have much faith that this will actually happen? Nope.

i agree… except i think alliances would be a useful addition. did you not like alliances in gw1? i thought of them as my friends’ friends. when there was a mish i didnt’ have enough guildies for, i could just switch to alliance chat and see if anyone was up for it, and the opposite would occur.

felt like an extended social group. i have my friends here, but i’m sorta friend w/ all these other kids in class and they might want to do stuff w/ me at times.

right now in gw2, its like, i have my friends right here, and then if i need more help i need to find some strangers from out of the blue that may or may not help

My concern with alliances has to do with guild size in GW2.

In GW1 a guild was allowed 100 members, an alliance was allowed 10 guilds, for a max of 1000 people. Some of the alliances and their “sisters” got amazingly out of hand.

In GW2, max size is 500. What would an alliance cap at? Even if we went half the number of GW1, we’re still talking a potential for 2500 people. At what point do we just become a nameless faceless mob?

Don’t look at me like that. Whatever you’ve heard, it’s probably not true.

i mean, you aren’t wrong, i just never played in or around those large of groups, so i didn’t realize its effects. my alliances were about 4 guilds most with < 10 active players simultaneously, one of the guilds was like a 40 man guild, and they were like the “go to” for knowledge and stuff guild from the alliance. so it was a fun exp for me

it was in the live stream. a small guild is ~15 players, anything smaller isn’t worth anet’s time.

Alternatively, if there had been alliances, we may have had a chance

I am in complete agreement here. Like many I was looking forward to the expansion until I found out that you need an army of guildies to capture your Guild Hall. Our guild is just four players who know each other personally and just play for fun, not the glory. Anet has let guilds like ours down. If this continues then I fear that as a GW1 player, GW2 will drive the small guilds out of the game. As there are a lot of small guilds, Anet will be the losers; not us.
