Q: Is the expansion “buy to play”?
A: Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns is a paid expansion to Guild Wars 2, but once you buy it, there are no subscription fees. This means that you can continue playing and access future updates for Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns with no subscription fee.

Since gold can be acquired simply through playing the game, using in-game currency is not a form of payment in this context.

And yes, owning Heart of Thorns will be required in order to create a Revenant.

Except those with HoT will be able to use their specializations and new class IN WvW and on those new WvW maps which will be easier to play on if you have the xpac as those maps will incorporate things that can only be used with masteries, which you can only get by getting the xpac.

So there’s that.

Essentially those with the xpac WILL have an advantage on those new WvW maps over those that don’t.

Yes but Anet is trying to make is so that the new profession and new specializations are not stronger than the old profession. Of course, whether they succeed or not remains to be seen. However the goal is that those without the xpac will be as strong as those with the xpac.

Specializations and Revenant are to be balanced with the existing stuff. If you are satisfied with the current professions and playstyles there is no reason to care much about specializations.
If specializations are better across the board then arenanet messed up.

Same really goes for masteries. arenanet said they want big fights, that’s what they think wvw is all about. Forcing masteries to get around effectively will seriously hinder that when half your zerg cannot keep up cause they lack the required mastery to do so.

So unless you got a source where arenanet stated that masteries will play a part in wvw, and not having them puts you at a significant disadvantage, I’m not convinced.

If that’s the case then that’s totally messed up. XD You already got upscaled people giving you a disadvantage on every WvW maps, having no specializations or masteries on a map where it’s needed to compete would be another disadvantage, more rage from commanders and other players who will blame the loss on the ones not having expansions.

Missing a new class in WvW battle might not be such a big deal, but considering some specialization might have a certain CC that will change the outcome of a battle would be.

To the other comments about the map, you can see on the trailer that it has alot of climbin points, cliffs, edges to fall of from. while in WvW the surroundings of a battle do make an impact, necro fears to drop people off wouldn’t be a fair way to win and far from fun. Open field fights can give you an upperhand against a strong melee train.

I mean, either the map is huge and they’ve only shown the bad parts, or it really is all that bad. XD Look at the high stairs, the fights near the edge off the cliffs, or the bridges far up in the sky… how’s it not looking like EoTM?

Check out the interview Angry Joe did with Colin. In it Colin gets asked about the WvW stuff and Colin points out that while the new maps will be available to everyone, only people with the xpac will get to take “full advantage” of the maps, which means things like gliding, etc will most likely come into play, hence masteries will affect game play there.

Also, a few of the people that got to play the rev recently (MattV, WP, and others) stated that they found certain things about the Rev to be a bit OP at the moment. I hope that through beta testing Anet can really find out if that is the case and fix it before HoT drops as having something like a truly OP class flooding the game will not make the players that have not bought HoT non too happy.

I’d really like a clarified statement that your information is from the inside, rather than just reading the FAQ like the rest of us. I know it probably is, but the way you’re distinguishing purchasing and acquiring just doesn’t make sense given what’s already in game:

When I check other items(like the digital deluxe edition) on the gem store, the button says “Complete Purchase”. And when I go to a vendor, the button says “Buy”. And when I go to buy gems, the button says “Buy Gems”. Those sound like forms of payment to me.

WOAH! Slow down there buddy. This is a very misinformed post, Masteries are a new form of progression for PvE only. Gliders are also to have been confirmed to be used in the new Maguuma Jungle area only as it is part of Heart of Thorns masteries.

I really have no idea where you are getting your information from and would please like a more specific part of the interview because I watched that interview too and heard nothing of the sort from Colin saying Masteries will be usable in WvW.

Edit to clarify -

Each profession will have a new ‘specialization’ based on a weapon – such as the Ranger “Druid/Staff” that they announced during the xpac announcement. Masteries are something completely different from specializations. So it is likely that those who buy HoT will be able to use their specialization in WvW. There’s been no confirmation about masteries being usable in WvW.

Incredibly sad this option isn’t being provided to the loyal old players. I really hope they provide some option via the gem store even if for an incredibly high price.

Anet should surely know people who keep buying gems with gold keep the conversion rate high forcing many others to spend real money in the gem store. So in this way they are supporting the game throughout not just during expansion release. Anet revenues from the gem store are much more important and higher than box prices of their expansion and games.

I’m pretty sure ‘loyalty’ and people grinding the poo out of CoF don’t keep the lights on at their office.

What’s terrifying to me is how anyone who plays so much they feel they could buy the game through gold farming at “an incredibly high price” is reluctant to give some cash to a company that is giving them so much pleasure. Incredibly sad this option isn’t being provided to the loyal old players.

I’m quite sure that loyal players would not hesistate to buy the expansion for real money.

I am sure many would. Its about denying an option that should exist cause it exists for everything else that in the gem store. Anet wants the gold farmers there to keep the prices high but wont give the option that many old players would want.

It exists for everything in the game, but it doesn’t exist for the game itself. You still have to pay cash to buy the game even if your’e buying a second or third copy.

This is a new game, so it shouldn’t be an option.

…yes, Sherlock, the option to buy for gems exists for everything that is in gemstore. By definition. Not everything however is in the gemstore – in fact, only a tiny minority of all the available things are there.

You can’t buy the core game for gems. You won’t be able to buy the expansion either. See the consistency?

Anet wants the gold farmers there to keep the prices high but wont give the option that many old players would want.

Because they want to earn money. I’m also sure that there will be enough other things in gemshop to keep the show on the road (remember raven wings and the gem price spike they caused?).

Sorry to burst your bubbles but masteries are pve olny. The “advantage” is nothing else but specializations and new class. Howered there is also possiblity to have extra wvw abilities for HoT users olny on new maps.
