The answer (as far as I understand it) is VAT (value added tax), which does not exist in the US but does exist in Europe. Even though VAT varies across countries, a single percentage is chosen which applies throughout Europe. I think this is common practice amongst game companies.

Price differentation is indeed consistent with many games companies. As it was with GW2 at launch

Tax in the US is not shown here. And it’s different from state to state. They pay more than USD 99. It is a rather complex system and varies by jurisdiction :

Actually it’s even a common practise to convert prices 1:1 fom dollar.
