What, were you expecting it to be handed to you at the beginning? And if it was, wouldn’t you then proceed to not do anything in the new maps and complain there’s nothing to do?

Not all of us have time to grind up 400 hero points to unlock an elite spec, especially when the expansion map is empty.

I’ve been playing open world for so long (nearly three years) because this game has been so generous to alts. It has been trivial and fun to level a new character and try out new equipment, specs and combat techniques. HoT has reversed that whole game philosophy. I regret it, as this has been a great game, but I just don’t have the energy or motivation to unlock the elite specialization on eight characters.

I’m with OP on this. I don’t want to be handed the elite spec for free, I want to earn it, but then I would like to have HoT stuff left to do with the new spec. If the hero spec unlock was gonna be this lenghty they should have made a pre release phase where you grind for these points in like a prologue type thing before release. That way you would’ve earned the hero spec but you can do new content using new spec. I feel like I’m wasting the new content by doing it in old spec. Like watching a pirated hand held cam version of an epic movie before watching it on the big screen.

Anyways on the plus side, seems you only have to level masteries on the first char, then subsequent characters just have to do Maguma hero points to unlock hero spec because masteries are account wide.

With this said, to be able to unlock the elite specialization you only need 60 points, which isn’t that much, so you can still experience the new specialization by mixing the olds ones with the new ones.

Err have you played HoT? No one wants to use a kitten 60pt whatever intro spec. Especially in this difficult HoT content. You’d be 2/3rds of a character.

Yes I’m playing HoT and enjoying the new specializations, No one wants to start a game at level 1 either, maybe we should all start at level 80..

When you start a game at level one you are facing level one opponents. Starting an elite spec means being effectively sub level 80 while facing post level 80 content.

That was not even the point, the point was before you can reach level 80 you need time to reach it, the elite specialization is no different that is why it is called elite, there is nothing preventing you from using your old build to unlock 2 or 3 masteries to be able to reach the new hero points, and then start building the elite specialization.

It’s the same logic as anything else, before you can start bulding new gear you use the older gear.

So you say people should just run around with 2 and a half trait lines when most bosses will just one or two shot you? When the map was designed for lvl 80 in a decent gear? Hot is not where you’re supposed to level so please don’t compare it to starting as a lvl one when everything you’ll face there will be weak lvl ones, too. Didn’t see any mobs with just half of their skills in Hot, yet.

I don’t think you read what i said.. actually i said quite the opposite, i said that you can use your current build to enjoy the new content.

The new Elite Specialization is no different from anything else, before you can fully enjoy it you will need to put some time and effort.

That’s why I think it’s a flaw in design, we get these awesome new elite specs but at the same time we are discouraged to use them until they are fully powered (especially with DD, which is poop at its starting state). Doesn’t that sound stupid?

Unlocking the spec requires us to do HoT content, unless you want to suffer through grinding wvw, which leaves less content for our fully powered elite spec to play with. As many players, me included, want their elite spec unlocked as fast as possible, it steers them into hunting hero points with our old boring builds.

Would you rather have this current system or enjoy the new content and the new full elite spec right of the bat in your own terms and pace?

Please read the opening post again. Because that’s been Pezz’s whole freaking point. He wants to enjoy the NEW CONTENT with the NEW BUILD.

Of course you can use the old builds to see the new content, everybody does so, but that’s NOT the point. Some because the elite specs of their class do not appeal to them, the other half because they “have to” OR because they like the way ANet implemeted the elite specs.

Wait, so can someone clarify this for me? I will not be able to level and clear the map as a Reaper? I have to essentially clear the whole map plus extra stuff in HOT and be max level before I can play as the class I want to be?

Unfortunately, yes. A-Net doesn’t care. They have your money already and there isn’t a single thing you or I can do about it. Buy something from the Gem Store. That will cheer you up.

Think of it not so much as a specialization to play, as something to get for finishing the rest of the content so you can stick it on a shelf.

It’s like a trophy.

It would make more sense to make it an achievement or a trophy and not a new play style, then. Really questionable design decision.

This.

And also the grind for elite specs is totally meaningless – there’s no theme unlike when you look at precursor crafting. If each elite spec had a themed progression/unlock system then perhaps it would feel more like fun rather than a chore. For example class npcs that would train us and elite spec specific challenges to complete to learn new skills/traits.

Add to that players hoping to enjoy a majority of the new content playing as the elite specs. They could have locked trophies, themed weapon/armour skins, achievements and so on behind a grind instead but left all the core traits and skills easier to access for people to play with.

Even as a main only player I’m finding this a chore. Elite specs locked behind hero points, hero points behind masteries, masteries behind farming XP…

Lol, jokes on them. I haven’t bought Heart Of Thorns yet.
