June 30th preorder?
Considering you haven’t had to pay a cent after initially buying the game because you could purchase everything with in-game gold converted to Gems for 3 years, a $50+ price tag is more than reasonable. They can’t just keep making new content for free forever.

Oh yes, because no one has ever bought anything with real money other than the retail game.

Choosing to buy things from the gem store isn’t the same as “having to pay”. You can get by just fine in-game without spending a single penny on the gem store.

Why do people keep saying this? “You don’t have to pay!” Well, no, you don’t. No one has to pay! In practice, though, how many people do you really think do gold->gems VS pulling out their credit card/paypal?
I’m going to be upfront. I’m part of the second group. And I buy gems with real money fairly frequently. The reason I do this is because if I were to ever do gold->gems I could not live with myself knowing how lopsided the exchange rate is. If I ever do gems->gold after having done gold->gems, I’d just be shooting myself in the foot.
So, no, they’re not living on nothing other than the core game. It’s absolutely preposterous to think they haven’t made any money off the gem store and that people only do gold to gems.
And hence my point: They’re not “making new content for free forever”.

People keep saying it because it’s true; no one has to pay real money for anything in-game (other than buying the game itself). I don’t think anyone said Anet is only operating on the money received from people buying the game alone. Granted, maybe someone DID say it back on the first page, but I only skimmed a few posts there.
As to the rest of your post, of course some people do buy gems with real money, and of course it helps to fund the game. However, there are many people who haven’t ever spent any real life money on the gem store and even more who have only spent real life money a small number of times. And honestly, at this point, I know more people who buy gems with gold (because they save up mats and gold like insane pack rats) than people who buy gems with real money.
Regardless of gem store-based income, an expansion will bring in money quickly (probably moreso than the gem purchases).

The top quote implies that they’ve been making content for free, forever (it actually just blatantly says just that). This is only superficially true. To me they have not been making new content for free, ever. When I spend money on gems, some/most/all of that money is (hopefully) being cycled into development costs and employee paychecks. Both of which, in turn, make this “free content” a reality.

Either you didn’t understand what I said at all or you’re exaggerating it for some purpose. I never said no one buys Gems with Cash; I said you don’t have to. Account upgrades, cosmetics, even LS Season 2 could all be bought with Gems which, if you have the gold for, you can buy without using actual cash.
I’ve heard plent of people say they have over 1k gold. They have no reason to spend real money on Gems unless they feel they want to support Anet.
Buying the expansion is exactly that: supporting Anet for all their hard work in making this new (and future) content. You can pay for it, or you don’t have to. But Anet needs more than mircrotransactions to pay the bills.

How can I be exaggerating? And for what diabolical purpose are you accusing me?
You say, “They can’t just keep making new content for free forever”.
I say there’s no such thing as a free lunch.
I don’t really know how else to put this and I’m tired of repeating myself.
Here is the funny thing I have the right to complain all I want about a game. Just like you have the right not to read or care what i say. Im not saying I wont get it im saying its just a month worth of patches In one day for 50.00 but of course you will show how smart you are and say something back. lol
And since you choose to do in a public forum, the rest of us have the right to criticise the sources you based your opinion on, the opinion itself and you as a person.

For every person that chooses to pay, there are 10 that don’t. Obviously this is a made-up number, but it’s a fact there are a great number of people that enjoy the content released for free. The price they paid to buy the game doesn’t even offset the cost of the strain they put on the servers over time.
It’s simple mathematics, and it comes down to whether those that willingly pay spend enough to cover for those that don’t spend a single cent.
Since Anet decided to release this content as a b2p expansion, they most likely believe gem sales alone would not cover the development costs.

Just because some people may enjoy the content for free does not mean that the content was created “free”. How do you people not grasp this concept? How much content do any of you think we would have now without the gem store? Do you all honestly think we would have gotten things like Season 2 without a vital revenue stream such as the gem store? This free content was not free.

What do you even try to say by “created free”. Developing the content costs resources, “free” refers to whether anyone asks you for compensation to allow you access to it.
So yes, it is free. Any one who has purchased the game has the right to access the released content for free, that is for no additional charge. This is what free means.
Whether Anet got their money back, and where they got it from is unrelated. If I give you a free sandwich, it doesn’t matter who paid for it. For you, it’s a free sandwich.

That actually depends on your country of origin. I was being sarcastic though.

I haven’t. Other than the box price, I haven’t paid an additional cent since.

We’ll have to agree to disagree. Economics 101 summarized: Nothing is free. Scarcity in resources. Productions costs. Time. Recuperation of expenditures. Profits.
Also, there is no country that has freedom of speech on the internet. So it doesn’t really depend on one’s country they’re currently in or even their country of origin; this is because such a thing does not exist in the first place. However, that is neither here nor there.
Considering you haven’t had to pay a cent after initially buying the game because you could purchase everything with in-game gold converted to Gems for 3 years, a $50+ price tag is more than reasonable. They can’t just keep making new content for free forever.

And your point?
We’ll have to agree to disagree. Economics 101 summarized: Nothing is free. Scarcity in resources. Productions costs. Time. Recuperation of expenditures. Profits.
That’s pointlessly philosophical, and I study economics. You are twisting definition to make a point that serves no purpose to the discussion. “Free” has been very clearly used to refer to monetary compensation from the very beginning of this argument.
Funny thing is, it’s currently impossible to pay directly for this free content. Anet doesn’t even accept donations. What you are paying for is gems, a digital product of no monetary value. More directly, gems are a medium that allow you to pay for outfits, bank slots and stuff unrelated to the free content released periodically.
So, Anet releases this content at a loss, and relies on cosmetic stuff and account upgrades to make up for those losses.

The fact that a site is privately owned doesn’t mean they have the right to suppress your rights, no more than you have the right to hold someone prisoner against their will in your own house, because they were visiting. Like you said, though, not here.

I don’t see how you could call the fundamentals of economics pointless and philosophical. That’s very dismissive.

You are trying to split up their revenues and their costs. That method isn’t applicable. That’s like saying that when I buy gems some of that money does not go into salary. It’s a system, and everything is part of that system. There is not an outfits system, a bank expansion system, a character slot system, a toys system, etc. It is all together as one. One helps to pay for the other and so forth.
Also, there is no country that has freedom of speech on the internet. So it doesn’t really depend on one’s country they’re currently in or even their country of origin; this is because such a thing does not exist in the first place. However, that is neither here nor now.

Of course they have the right to suppress your “freedom of speech”. Freedom of speech is not applicable on the internet. Moderators suppress this “right” all the time.

I assume it would be the purpose of trying to sound arrogantly intelligent but falling short of your mark. But this has gotten wildly off topic; you just don’t get what I’m saying. People above this post have already explained it enough ways anyways.

Let’s just say I do not get what you or the above poster is saying; at least I have submitted that there can be a difference of opinion. I still think I am right, but I know that I do not have to resort to last-ditch efforts to insult someone to try and make a valid point. You cannot say the same. You resort to bigotry.
