Legendary Weapons - an appeal to ArenaNet
So this thread is literally about -two- legendaries, The Dreamer and Quip. Let’s be real here. Out of every legendary, out of 19 weapons, 2 are the source of this, eh, I don’t want to say drama but really.
I really do hope they have more eccentric legendaries coming. Why is everyone so hell bent on being dark and cool. Are these the same players with ‘reaper’ ‘dark’ and all other stereotypical manner of character names? That’s what makes these weapons so great, they’re not stereotypical. They break the mold.
For the record, my character names are as followed:
Xana Oravia, Delona Oravia, Candace Oravia, Evelyn Oravia and Adam Oravia.

It’s not about being ‘dark’ (I loathe captain Dark Tryhard and his army of Evilblack characters), but a call for something that is both cool and sincere.
I’m just glad the Dreamer isn’t a longbow. Could you imagine the absolute irritation of Ranger Longbow 2? neighneighneighneighneighneighneighneighneighneighneighneigh
Followed by NEIGH-Knockback? …I really do hate that bow.
I’d considered getting Juggernaut, but the design is kinda eh, and Hammers don’t get any PvE love, so it’s not even worth making.

Considering, that just few posts above you i mentioned three others, you might want to rephrase that. And those are not all – there’s also the Minstrel (while ok in itself, it doesn’t fit most focus using classes at all), the Lover (okay for a ranger, but not so okay for a warrior), Meteorologicus (again, not bad by itself, but kudos to anyone that can fit it into a bigger character/class theme).
Oh, well, just try to fit any legendary (well, any land-based one, underwater weapons are actually good, but then underwater content is being forgotten more and more, so meh) into a Necromancer theme/aestethics.
It’s not just a few joke skins, but a bigger problem that touches most of the legendaries.

Plus it really lost dignity when it update with ribbons. Feels like these should be a different classification of joke weapons not Legendary weapons.

I hope Arenanet doesn’t listen to you people. If you want more options that is fine but I for one like the dreamer too bad I hate the ranger and thief enough that I will never make it.
more options makes the world go round. Btw when they introduce The dreamer, the concept was to kitten off certain types of players at least that was what the Then Director implied.

I have no problem with the Dreamer. I kind of like it, actually. What i have the problem with is with the Dreamer being the only legendary option. Joke skins are okay – but only as an additional option when you have your bases covered already.

Legendary gear should be mark of very experienced and dedicated player.
In that case, I believe that I should have a legendary too. Why should mindless farmers and RNGods get them?

longbow basically is a plant-bow shooting with flowers…….
shortbow shots unicorns (wait wut?)
pistol shots confetti
mace is discoball on a stick
axe is disqualified by a fact that axes are supposed to cut not bite
shield is nice
greatswords are ok
staff – depends on likings varies from ok to gay weapon :P (no offense intended ofc)
hammer…. aura looks weird
sword is tolerable
dagger… lets nto comment that one

Dear ArenaNet
I haven’t always played your game constantly, but I did play it for a long time after release, and the HoT announcement brought me crawling back. That’s because though I got bored at times I believe that the mechanics of your game are still fun and can create entertaining content, plus I can’t resist a game whose content focuses on game lore.
One of the best things I heard from HoTs announcement is new <Legendary Weapons, with questlines to get Precursors (the one reason I never obtained a Legendary in the game currently), so to make sure this feature is perfect, I appeal to you…….PLEASE DON’T MAKE THE WEAPON MODELS GIMMICKy AGAIN
Compared to games like TERA, WOW and Wildstar, I believe that GW2s art style is definitely more “earthy”, focusing on detail and somewhat realism against stylization (hence why half of your equipment models look like plain old armor), because of this disco balls, unicorns and confetti pistols simply don’t fit.
I’m not saying there’s no humour in the game, or that you can’t have humour, I just believe the tone you yourselves have set for GW2 is better suited for action and drama first and humour second. And I also believe this sort of style takes away from the sense of empowerment players should feel by having them, I believe that they want to show off to others how dedicated and skilled they are for taking the time to make the weapon by looking distinct and kitten, not goofy.
Please ArenaNet, leave the gimmicky styles in the Gem Store for the eccentrics who will buy them, and focus on making Legendary weapons look not only distinct, but kitten, and fitting with the tone GW2 is trying to set. I’m pretty sure that you’ll make a lot of people happy
Agree 100%
Well said OP.

I disagree, I don’t care how much money you throw at the game, a player that would not be capable of acquiring a legendary themselves should still not have a legendary, otherwise it messes with the games overall progression, why would I bother getting a legendary to show I’m capable of more than most in this game if someone else can just bypass that with money? The game is not a test of how much money you have it is a test of your personal and group skill and abilities in a verity of forms.
On the Pay to win thing, I had a paragraph typed out but deleted it, I personally feel that GW2 has sufficient gem store reliance to be considered pay2 reasonably win too many things involve or are through the gem store (which a gem – gold conversion does not negate).
That is based off the fact that you can make your character look quite high end using purely gem store items/ converting to gold which disrupts how I view progression (i.e worse players look ugly and have crappy skins, high end players have more advanced skins and nicer items).
Unless fashion gives players a measurable advantage then it is not p2w. Fashion Wars 2 anyone?
Legendary weapons shouldn’t be made so you can feel special compared to others, you should be making them because you genuinely enjoy their style and effects. Furthermore that person who has a real job could make a Legendary easily if they smashed their face on the keyboard doing Vinewrath or any other farm-able thing in game long enough.
Saying that someone who converts cash to gems to gold is not deserving of the legendary is the same as saying anyone who smashes their face on the keyboard farming doesn’t deserve it. Kind of interesting that you think you don’t deserve a legendary.
Crafting a legendary without gems only shows you spent time playing this game or got lucky with some RNG. The amount of skill or in game knowledge isn’t a factor and for a game like gw2 it shouldn’t be or it wouldn’t be gw2.
The current model supports Anet and continued development, allows anyone to get a legendary and enjoy that aspect of the game. Gating it behind anything else will just annoy more players and the “prestige” seeking players who spend more time than anyone will always be unhappy, because they only care about appearing better than other players, but guess what, you aren’t a better person because you have more or look better.
I have made 7 legendary weapons in game and I think even the most casual players should be able to obtain them. I could care less if everyone has the skin because I personally enjoy it, if exclusivity is all you care about then I would go pick up the pearl weapon set, I promise you there are less people using it.

I just bought Delaqua’s greatsword.
Having a greatsword that isn’t some bad reject from a miniatures game where everything has to weigh nine-hundred pounds makes it better than every other greatsword IN THE GAME (the Ebonhawk one is decent and a couple of the very plainest low level ones aren’t completely stupid). Now, if I could get that model leaving trails of light like Dawn, I’d go for it, but right now the whole class of weapons is in pretty bad shape.
I wonder what your basis for comparison is…”

I want legendaries to be actual legends. Items of lore meaning and value. Right now they are just shiny skins with lots of particle effects and a few convenience features. There is no lore to them.
IMO Sohothin and Magdaer are more legendary than the current crop. I want legendary weapons that were wielded by legendary heroes with legendary powers. Artifacts of power that were crafted from powerful beings like Caladbolg was crafted from the Pale Tree, or the blade wielded by Balthazar himself, Urgoz’s bow that has grown more powerful over the last 250 years, the Scepter of Orr, a shield made from Jormag’s scale or a staff fashioned from Zhaitan’s rib.
Send us on legendary journeys, learning tales of lore which root these powerful items in Tyria’s past or present. Make them feel like epic adventures and not just epic grinds.
To me, this should ensure legendaries avoid the novelty problems of the Dreamer, Moot or Quip. Items like the Flameseeker Prophecies are far cooler than generic flashy weapon skins.

You know what I think would make good legendaries in gw2, from guild wars 1. the first things that come to mind are the magmas shield, obsidian edge(of course this would get some kind of aura), emerald- either blade or edge- one of them changed color in lighting, the obsidian skin earth staff(it had a floating piece of obsidian at the end of it), diamond aegis(this would definitely get some kind of aura too). I have more, but I can’t find them in my characters inventory, not that i ever had the emerald one, but there were others.
Diamond Aegis is already in game. I have it. in fact almost all the legacy skins are true legendary weapons.
Fiery Dragon Sword
Diamond Aegis
Mountaincall
Clawed Scepter
and the others
These are in fact weapons of legend.
The scepter was a gift to the hero that defeated Shiro
The Ithas Longbow. a weapon that belonged to Logan’s ancestor.
Mountaincall is a call back to Stormcaller
Fiery Dragon Sword. AKA I can’t believe it’s not Sohothin.

I don’t want another dreamer type legendary. that noise is worse than nails on chalkboard to me. at least quip i can barely ever hear.

I’d rather have serious Legendaries.
After all we’re talking about legendary weapons. I find comical legendaries as unfitting as a Rubberduck-Excalibur in the hands of King Arthur.
Don’t get me wrong, I like comical weapons and we definetely should have some more of them in the game, but not as Legendaries.
PLEASE ARENA NET:
Do not make a weapon with such a cool name such as Bifrost, and have it resemble rainbows rather than a cool ice weapon.

Alright, Bifrost is the one exception to the “silly legendary” problem IMO.
http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bifröst
It’s based on the rainbow bridge. While it could have had a slight more serious design, rainbows would likely always be a part of it. Frankly I think they did a good job encorportating that design with the legend.
On reflection, legendaries should really be based on, yknow, legends. Maybe an Excalibur style sword, or an Elder Wood Staff.
Base stuff on Tyrian legend as well, like the Flameseeker prophecies.
Imagine a shield forged from the bones of Zhaitan, or something.
I really like the Bitfrost. The only thing I find a bit sad is that for elementalists so many elemental effects are reduced to the same simple rainbow-ball. Would have been great to see the rainbow intertwine with the existing effects instead.
Otherwise, great weapon.

i’m fine with shooting flowers, yes. i’m ok with themes that aren’t realistic. But quip is a confetti gun, it is a joke weapon. Moot is also a joke weapon, however, it’s effects hadn’t been bad, until they made them even more prominent. Dreamer, as much as I dislike it, mostly the noise, it is the one I have to give the least grief about as it does have it’s own theme. If dreamer instead just shot some other kind of horse or creature, different noise, personally would say different trail than the rainbow, I’d be all for it.

I personally feel that legendary items should be represented by models/skins that are wholly unique to anything else in the game; and sometimes that means being ridiculous.
We have a lot of phony legendary exotic weapons that are flashy but not as ridiculous; like Foefire’s Essence or Mjolnir. I think it would be better if legendaries stayed crazy flashy and sometimes jokey or ridiculous, and the more reasonable flashy weapons were reserved for the pho-legendary exotics.
Besides… if you don’t like the super crazy legendary skins you can always put a simple skin over it and keep the legendary stats… because if you want a legendary weapon but don’t like the skin, then the only reason you would want it would be for the stats, and you can put those stats on any weapon skin you like without losing anything.

Too many things are already account bound. Don’t lock more things away.
Legendaries were meant to be ultra rare items that showed your mastery of the game, making them trade-able reduced them to a high end checklist item that you grabbed if you wanted too with money you grinded. I hope they make them account bound and that acquisition is made far harder and skill based for the parts.
+1, I totally agree. THIS is why I never invested in a legendary. It wasn’t cause of the precursor, it was because anyone and their brother can have one by dumping cash into gems then converting to Gold. IMHO that is a small version of Pay 2 win. Which GW2 was never about.
You guys are forgetting the great Economic effect Legendaries and Precursors have on the game. They are a vital part of the economy thus why they have taken so long to make is so that precursor “hunting” has come out because they wanted to get it right without completely devaluing the market.
What about people that MAKE legendaries to sell them? There is a good market for legendaries and as such it shouldn’t be tampered with too severely.

You do realize asking them not to be tradable is kinda stupid. It won’t achieve what you want. people will still buy all the mats for it on TP
As long as the precursors aren’t RNG I could agree to not having them on TP but if the :alternate method to get Precursors" is still laden with RNG. they better dam well be tradeable RNG =/= Skill so claims that Legendaries show off skill/mastery of the game is utter BS. it shows you either got lucky or did countless hours of grinding.

Taking a long time or requiring grind does not make them hard to get. A hard to get item is one where people can and will actively fail to achieve the goal. It is an easy goal as money is the only obstacle currently and anyone in the game can make money. It takes a long time to get but it is not hard. If 100 people decided they wanted a legendary, and played correctly 100 players would get a legendary. In a hard items case 100 players would try their best to get the item and at least 90 of them would fail horrifically and never get it.

It’s a step by step process, not putting the new legendaries or precursors on the trading post is the first step. Making the requirements for the gifts more skill based would be the second. Just because taking them off the TP doesn’t completely eliminate the problem does not mean it shouldn’t be done. It would still be an improvement over the current situation as the player would at least be forced to get the gift of mastery and dungeon tokens themselves.

getting thousands of gold is hard in my opinion. it is not skillbased that’s right.
but the amount of legendaries you got basically shows the amount of time spent on the game. getting one legendary is not hard, i agree. but getting 10+ legendary is very hard if you don’t spend money on gems.
but i am also fine with the idea that players have to complete skillbased challenges in order to get their legendary. that probably even makes it faster for me to complete my legendaries. i rly don’t care about how hard they are to get.
This isn’t about just two. It is about the design philosophy overall. Not everyone wants eccentric/flamboyant/flashy weapons so asking for more when there is already plenty is not fair to the people who want less of the sparkle unicorn confetti it in newer legendaries.
I totally understand where you’re coming from, I just suppose from my perspective, this isn’t something that’s been a massive invasive thing I suppose, especially when there are really great alternatives that aren’t legendaries floating around out there. I hope they add more options that are on-par with what’s being suggested, but if they change their design philosophy to not include the more out-there options then I will be disappointed. Because for those of us who do enjoy these flamboyant options, we only have two (three if you decide to count Bifrost). We’re in the minority here. Something to think about.
Chiming in that I also love the colorful, light-hearted, silly stuff. Not prefer it…but it makes me smile whenever I see those weapons in game much like quaggan backpacks, minipets, bobble heads, and tonics. I wish I was drawn to the shortbow more on my ranger main so I could justify getting The Dreamer.
To exclude the really out there designs would be a downer for me as well. It took a while for me to appreciate Kudzu and I can’t deny I was disappointed by the design at first. Nature and the archetypical bow classes usually go together so my initial impression was that “a plant bow” was a standard, safe, and unsurprising concept…not like the “WTF is this?” Dreamer. But I came around. It really is a beautiful and graceful looking weapon.

Personally, I love Kudzu and the greatswords the most, because they are juuust the right level of unrealistically epic without drifting too far into the “come on, are you kidding me?!” territory, like Dreamer and that gaudy disco ball. I mean, if you like it, good for you, but personally, that’s just… dear god, no XD
Thing is, I’d really appreciate it if the next generation of legendaries would reverse the current silly – not silly pattern. A kitten mace and a silly sword, I’d be fine with that. Though what to do with the weapons on the middle ground…? Kudzu can easily be justified as “normal”, seeing as we have an entire race of sentient trees (kinda) who could very well make that kind of bow work, literally and lore-wise. But then there’s the rest of Tyria; I currently play Kudzu only on my sylvari ranger and it looks anything but silly on her, but when I preview it on my norn it looks plain ridiculous. Those weapons could go either way, though.
As for the “make them accountbound” question, no. There are people who have all them time in the world to farm the gold and mats, but never get a precursor drop and have to mindlessly grind for one, no skill necessary (yours truly). There are those who get lucky, loot three pres in a row and sell two to buy all the mats for turning #3 into the legendary. There are those who don’t have as much time, but are skilled players nonetheless and buy (cash-buy) a legendary or precursor to save their gaming time for something other than farming. All legit ways to get a legendary weapon, and frankly, these days, the number of “legitimately earned” legendaries is ridiculously high anyway, so a bunch of people buying it for cash doesn’t “diminish” your own any more or less than all the others that are in the game already.
I mean, why does your pride in your legendary depend on how many others have it, anyway? Do you also go sulk in a corner of your new house because soooo many other people have houses, too, and you are the only one who earned it? Frankly, this “my shiny toy isn’t special anymore because everyone has one too and that’s unfaaaaair” attitude is childish beyond belief.
The precursors earned through the scaveneger hunt will be accountbound, anyway, and that’s okay. But I’d still be a little bit disappointed if the legendaries were, too. After all, making one is so much work it can’t be easily exploited, if at all, and it should be up to me whether or not I want to sell something for ingame currency that somebody else wants to buy for ingame currency. If there is real money involved, it has to go directly to Anet, and I’m okay with that.

I expect that the “silly Legendaries” like Moot and Quip will get “serious” alternatives in HoT, while the “serious Legendaries” like Bolt or Frostfang will get “silly” alternatives.
I hope so! Can’t believe the people in this thread who think we need more weapons with flames coming out of them, and hold up the flame-themed legendaries as the very best. As if we didn’t already have entire multiple sets dedicated to stuff that looks like it is on fire. Like the legendaries we have that are on fire look any better than cheap fire skins. There is only so much you can do with fire.
I want more crazy looking stuff, especially for the weapons where the current legendary option is plain boring. Bifrost, Incinerator, Bolt, the Predator… especially Bifrost! (Because I use staff a lot.) With my luck the new legendary staff will be flame-themed.
If you make them lore-centric, do you also make them unique? I mean truly unique, as in only one player ever gets it?
Legendary Nerf Rifle. Come on, you know you want it! ^^

Yes, exactly! Just good looking weapons. And a new staff please – we can’t all be rainbow-happy.
