The most important message we want to get across is you do it once, and when you’ve earned a mastery point you’ve got it for every character, and you’ve earned those abilities for every character. You don’t have to go back and grind on every one of your characters to get all this.
PCG: Oh, so an ability you purchase for one character is applied to all of them?
Colin: That is currently the plan, yes.
PLS, pls,pls reconsider that. the accountwide acquisition of the points is good, BUT i should be able to select the abilitys for every char separately. in my opinion, it would give everyone of my chars more depth and individuality.
this way i can have one “master in languages”, one “master in gliding” or one master in whatever you guys have in mind.
like the dif. abilitys i have on seperate chars in wvw. (ram-mastery, more supply, etc.)
hopefully your design for this feature is not final yet and you can change it. i’m rly looking forward to HoT and i’m very excited about it!

I am not really a fan of a account wide mastery system at all. They said they wanted that we are able to level our characters after getting to the max level right? So why then make a account wide mastery system? I mean it makes no sense that if I earned 100 points on my war, my new necromancer can use those 100 points instantly. So a character that never has been in the jungle can already be a master in surviving there.
If they are going to implement this account wide mastery system then I prefer the way you described (same for all the characters).

The outrage would be insane by the GW2’s population. More often than not every form of meaningful progression is seen as grind.
I’m already worried for the community’s outlash on the mastery system as content will be gated behind it.
From the sound of it, I however think it’ll be a fun system.

dont get me wrong though! i WANT the points accountwide, but i don’t want that the abilitys i choose for one char are automatically on all my other chars too.
that eliminates the individuality of each of my chars imo.
I think it depends how long winded it is. If it’s a WvW-point-like-system in PvE, then account-wide is certainly for the best.
If it’s a 14-point trait-like-system then, I feel that account-wide might trivialise the whole point of this feature as an extended character progression system.

That’s a valid point.
However I think the reasoning might be that by making the point allocation also accountwide, it will force you a little bit to make choices. Which can be a good thing (we are already extremely free in regard to pretty much everything). Otherwise you could just go for lets say 100 points and allocate them differently on each of your chars and be done with it.

Do you think we will be able to master the ability of swinging our swords? Maybe Colin will be our mentor.

They’re going to make a Colin backpack. Much like the Job-o-tron backpack he has phrases like:
“You swung a sword!”
“You swung a sword again!”
“Hey, you swung it again. That’s great!”

True some people will rage, but hey, people are always raging…
I’d prefer a individual system for now. Maybe my opinion changes when I know more about what we can do in the forest, how fast we get the points, how big the forest is, how rewarding it is (#lootwars2) and if there is a maximum amount of mastery points we can get.
And yes if we get the points account wide alot of people won’t really care about the forest anymore because they can choose whatever they want. So yeah I’d rather make a choice between masteries and have them account bound rather then set them up individually without the need to spend time in it.
Maybe they should implement a variable system that allows us to choose ourselves..

It’s almost like 90% of the other things that you earn for one character and can be given to your others. This is outrageous.

I think the system they are proposing is probably necessary to manage the pacing of the game. If you can allocate mastery points individually per character, you are essentially turning 10 mastery points into 100 for players with 10 level 80s and still only 10 for the player with just one. The player with 10 80s would always have a significant advantage, which would grow exponentially as the system became more robust.
How would they be able to balance that around any kind of meaningful progression that didnt favor one player over another? By making the skills unlocked accountwide, they can manage pacing and progression better – which will result in a smoother and better paced experience for all of us.
Just my 2 cents on this topic.
