Disclaimer: Sorry if this has already been discussed. I have been inactive for almost 2 years and haven’t been following GW2 forums. I did a quick search + went through 3 pages of forum, but couldn’t find this topic discussed.
Wouldn’t it make more sense to buy the expansion and just create a new account? Then you would get 5 additional character slots (from the new account) instead of 1.
Thanks for replies and looking forward to the expansion!
If you don’t care about achievement progression, PVP progression, WvW progression…then, yeah, do it.

You can do that and are perfectly allowed to do so.
But you will loose all progress on your existing characters, as well as some other benefits.
For example. if you have been inactive for almost two years, I can imagine you have atleast one character that turned 2 or even 3 years old. that means you recieve two items that gets a new character to level 20 instantly (no matter the starting level, so if you use it on a level 19 character, it is a bit of a waste).
You also get all your money, unlocked skins, etc with it.
Also any other account unlock you ever purchased will be available (inlcuding e.g. additional bankslots).
Considering I bought 5 additional characterslots, 3 banktabs and got several characters over 3 years old, it is a no brainer for me and I upgraded my account. I would suggest to inspect the current state of your existing account and look for the accountbound unlocks you would loose, and take that into account in your decission.
Not to mention account-bound currency, items, outfits, skins, gold find, magic find, etc.

it depends on how much you value the progress on your old account, the skins, titles, magic find and achievements and how well those old chars are geared up. If you don’t mind letting that account sit in vanilla Tyria and starting over from scratch, you can always use it for an alt account with daily login rewards and a complete bank tab for mat storage as well as your chars for non account/soul bound storage. It will mean you need to get at least one char to level 80 before the expansion starts to go there with everyone else, but if that’s not a concern then you can level at your leisure and go whenever.
