Melee dragon hunter?
If the current design still holds, you’ll have to equip the new spec to use the new weapon. However, most trait lines have a type of “unfocused” major trait option which aren’t weapon or utility class specific. So if you want just the bow, but not traps, there should be at least 1 trait in each tier that provides a “generic” benefit thats themed around the Spec’s concept. The Opposite is true if you want the utilities, but not the weapon, which should theoretically boost a general aspect unique to the guardian.
There is only one trait in the DH line that is an issue and it’s a minor trait. It does something with your attacks beyond 600 range. However, everything is just fine and you can certainly make a melee build work. You could use a greatsword, traps, and even slot Trapper runes to mimic a trapper ranger, among other fun things.
Personally I’m just interested in the new F-skills. The longbow will probably just be my alternate weapon in case I need to put some range between myself and whatever is trying to kill me (at least the longbow seems like a better option than the loot-stick or scepter).

I’m kind of looking forward to a LongBow/Greatsword Dragon Hunter myself. Seems thematically appropriate.

I think the meta is leaning towards a LB/Hammer variant, but there’s certainly nothing stopping you from going Greatsword. If traited, the Greatsword can provide a fairly decent amount of healing whereas the hammer tends to provide mitigation in the form of constant protection.
lol the GS healing is pitiful, 26 heal per attack in marauder amulet, and only 50 in cleric amulet

Per attack or per hit?

It’s per hit. Shout a “Feel My Wrath!” and perform a whirling blades; you’ll deal massive damage over a short period of time and heal for a good chunk.
“Triggers healing on any attack that connects while a greatsword is equipped. Applies to Zealot’s Speed, Smite Condition, and Judge’s Intervention, as well as any damage-over-time effects from other weapons, such as symbols. Does not apply to summoned allies like spirit weapons or to retaliation.” -official Wiki
Edit: Regardless of whether the healing is weak or not, the trait increases GS damage by 5%, reduces GS CDs by 20%, and does add some level of survivability. It’s a must-have if you’re running a GS.

Necro Life Siphons work well enough for me. The key isn’t to make slow, big hits with them, it’s lots of little hits.
With Guardian greatsword, the focus seems to be on Cleaving attacks and Area of effect. The healing is less pitiful when it procs multiple times per attack. Also, it isn’t supposed to replace a heal—it’s just a small amount of additional sustain for a more aggressive playstyle.

I wonder about it too, I’m totally a melee Guardian but those new virtues look very interesting! There’s only this one minor trait that’s range specific, which I kinda hope they change to be something more universal like the rest.
