Man has will, but Woman has her way – Oliver Wendell Holmes
My thoughts on the Beta Item

They should’ve just sent out emails again.
If you don’t get one, no biggie, you might get in on the next one.
With the portals, it just feels like a slap in the face to try and grind it for the better part of the week and don’t get one, only to see tons of people getting them in the first 5 minutes from a random mob.
You don’t put in effort to sign up for a newsletter. If you farm for that thing for over 50 hours, like many of us did, and don’t get one, you put in a lot of effort with absolutely no return.
Probably still playing ranger.
coax “You don’t put in effort to sign up for a newsletter”
You’ve proven my point about it being just as unfair to sign up via email/newsletter to get a chance to get the portal – It’s just as unfair to grind for 50 hours and not get the portal either, but at least you show you’re playing the game. I like Astral’s suggestion, it seems like a happy medium and gives those of us who do play the game consistently the best chance at participating in the beta. Now, if anyone else has a constructive idea, please share If you’re just going to kitten complain, move along, nothing to see here!

It was your choice to put this much effort. You could’ve also logged in, open exactly one chest in SW, and log off. You put minimal effort, and you take your chances at getting the portal. Same as signing up for the beta.
The difference is that with this system you can choose to spend 50 hours to increase your chances (that’s all you get out of it, nobody promised you were guaranteed a portal after 50 hours), while you cannot sign up 50 times.
I’m not telling; did I or didn’t I get a portal thing? I’ve so often been a ‘sure thing’ pick for beta tests in other worlds, I thought, only to wonder why someone else got in. But, I either liked the environment or didn’t and played on within it or didn’t. I’m sure that enough people will be brought along to hammer HoT into being ready for the masses and in the end that is ALL that matters. Thanks Arena Net!
My point is, I’m not liking it because of the Portal i got, I’m liking it because i can take my chances affecting the RNG, EG: Do nothing = no chance, Do Something = A chance, Do something more = Even more chance.
Rather than waiting for a RNG system to pick for me.
That’s the problem.
You see it as “Doing more-> More chances”.
But in actuality, like with any other random thing, the result is what matters.
If there’s just a single one-time source, you try, you may or may not get it. That’s just luck.
But if you may keep trying, the more you try without getting it, the more it feels like you are wasting your time and efforts.
It’s like buying a single lottery ticket vs working for hours with a little chance to get paid for your time and effort.
Which one do you think will feel worse for most people when they get nothing in return?
Oh my god that’s the most funny thing i’ve read in all this thread. The OP is right, you get better chances as much as you play, every drop is a lottery.
So all of you didn’t get it, stop whining . This time you didn’t get it because you didn’t tried hard enough. All the players that were playing with me got one.
Next time they do something like this try harder.
Nonsense. There are people who have played for hours upon hours without getting anything. There is no “try harder”.
