There will be no new weapon types. If there were going to be new types, they would’ve been announced explicitly at PAX. The melee polearm you saw the Revenant use is actually a melee-attack Staff.
What he said ^
But if we just fantasize, I think a two-handed axe would be on top of you wish-list. And maybe crossbows.
From the existing weapons, I’d love my warrior to be able to wield the melee-style staff, or a pistol.

The scythe staves we have now also have a blade on the top, yet they are still just staves not scythes.

Would been nice with a new weapon. But as I have seen theres new skins coming (A blade and two shields in the trailer for example). Im happy with that.
It will be a HUGE disappointment if no New weapons are comming up…
I cant believe this game haves Torches and Warhorns as weapons but no Pole-arms and Greataxes like 99% of all Mmos have. Like, what?

Source? Anet very explicitly said that they were only revealing the major features at PAX, while there were many other, smaller features yet to be revealed.
Also, I doubt their marketing team would mislead the entire community like that, by showing off a melee-attack staff with a polearm skin. Unless Anet wants to intentionally troll us, which would be of bad taste and lead to unnecessary disappointment.
It’s confirmed from someone who was at the afterparty.
Bring back: ‘Gamer’ title + MAT’s!
Throw out: Hotjoin!
Anything that doesn’t come directly from the mouth of a GW2 developer/mod is not fact.

This is purely a perspective issue, by which I mean your perspective. There are no new weapon types. They absolutely would have been announced. And I was not confused by that at all, because they made it abundantly clear that they were going to cover everything in the announcement (except, apparently, price and release date…). They do not want to troll us, you’re just taking something you saw and warping it into what you want it to be, but it’s just not that way.

Greataxe is definitely the weapon type I want. Insanely large axe wielded by a warrior, now that feels powerful.

New Weapons would be a Major feature.
What about the LS2 ending trailer? They now the Com wants a Spear (1hand or 2hand) and a 2 Hand axe.
Why should they show it in the Trailer and then not release them? I am sure they will come with the different specializations. That means, the specializations are the major feature, not the weapons they can use :P

Actually, I’d say it makes sense for them to do that.
Think about it like this: Lots of classes can not use a staff, and if they did it would be to hit things instead of casting magic. So, to give staves to those classes, they gave them fighting moves and introduced some weapon skins that look like … well… weapons.
By doing this, they ALSO give those classes the option to use some of the older staff skins if they want to, and give the spell casting classes the option to use the new weapon-ish looking skins on their spell casting staves.
Does this mean that none of the spell casting classes can use a staff as a melee weapon, though? Well, yes and no. Right now, they can’t. Whatever new weapon they get, this isn’t going to be it. But if they add more specializations later, it’s possible that they’ll introduce ones that change the staff use from spell casting to spell melee type moves of some kind. ((If you played City of Heores, imagine a staff fighting Elementalist using the attunement changes like the CoH staff fighting stance changes for an example.)) If that happens, you’ll have a weapon that can serve double duty.
delicate, brick-like subtlety.
People saying spears aren’t a possibility because they didn’t announce a new weapon…keep in mind, spears aren’t a new weapon. Hopefully we’ll just be able to take them out of the water now :P
adoring crossbows,.. anet please

If you show an armored profession wielding a polearm weapon and using polearm-looking skills in a trailer meant to advertise and hype your product, only for it to turn out false and be nothing more than a staff skin, then that is misleading. It has nothing to do with what I want it to be. It’s what it is, it’s what my eyes and your eyes can see everytime we replay that trailer. If it turns out to be a staff skin, then anet’s advertising was highly misleading.
And honestly, why go for the confusing approach of staves doubling as polearms, when we already have spears and plenty of spear skins? They could just as easily make spears available on land.

No, I think it’s genuinely wishful thinking on your part. I find it to be rather clever that they’re using the Staff as a melee weapon, because then people can have Scythe animations as well by using Final Rest or something like that. New weapon types are a major feature for sure, especially since multiple classes would have to get them in order for them to even make sense. That’d be big news.

It would be more confusing to have Spears underwater and Spears on-land. They would never recycle the weapon type like that because it would be steps backwards in their NPE.
to the people saying it’s a staff… grab a charr, equip a staff. look at the size of it.
now look at how short the weapon rytlock was using is. it’s like half the length of current staves.

To be honest, they could always copy some of the staff skins into polearms, much like what they already do with staves/ tridents.
I don’t find it that clever. Most of the staves skins will look ridiculous when used as polearms. This also means skill animations will be restricted to blunt attacks, because piercing hits will make no sense with most of the skins. And ultimately, it will lack immersion and be confusing for players that will not be on-par with how it works. “Hey, I’m using a polearm, but I haven’t gotten a new one for ages. Wait, are you telling me all those magical staves I’ve collected are my polearms? Is this a bug, Anet?”

Suit yourself. There’s no point arguing since you clearly won’t change your mind, so I guess all we can do is wait and see when they release more information.
The staff weapon as a melee weapon isn’t so far fetched you could use it for monk styled abilities for the guardian if you can swap skills for the weapons you can use in this expansion.
Maybe a new two handed magic weapon like a levitating orb or some kind of other object like a rune or a talisman?

I’m still resistant to the Staff as a melee weapon theory. If we’re using a traditionally non-melee weapon as a one, why is the idea of an existing aquatic weapon as a melee weapon so far fetched, especially when it clearly has spear qualities in the video?

That is true but maybe they have decided to make all weapons usable on land and in water.
but if all weapons become usable in and out of water that would be a bit unnecessary becaus not meny people like underwater combat anyway and you need to introduce alot of new skills.

2years and counting on waiting for greataxe :/ I’d drop all my classes, hell delete them (Anet, you can check, I can boldly delete my lvl 80) gladly, if I’d need to make a class with greataxe :/
Aside from that, bit rebalance of skills, so weapons would have their roles more comprehensible, like Rifle on warrior being a DD weapon compared to Longbow or vice versa, same issue with dual pistols on thief, etc.

There is still the possibility that spears/anything else will be introduced first through the new class specialization, and since they only showed us ranger druid and necro GS so far, any weapon beyond that has the potential of receiving a brand new weapon type (hint hint guardian and warrior spear hint hint).

Wont matter anymore, how many weapons you bring into the game. It did like a year ago….but not now.
The combat will be the same boring dodge or die. Trough that wont matter, since all you do is run around and get up downed ppl….battles with more then 5 players are mindless skillspamming…
No one here understands how utterly kitten Gw2 combat is? Or ppl that understud it already left?

I think it’s totally possible that new weapons come with HoT. They announced major features at pax south, but weapons are sort of a feature that already exist. Lbviously could be wrong but it isn’t out of the question.
Please add Potato as weapon..maybe a focus. Nobody uses them anyway. Make Potato legendary.

they announced all the new features. they consider “new profession” a new feature. they consider “more weapons for old classes” a feature. i’m pretty sure they’d consider “new weapons” a new feature.

I know this is a bit of a stretch that most likely wont happen BUT i think it would be cool for certain proffessions like the warrior, to be able to dual wield GS’s which would eliminate a need for having a second set of weapons to swap out to, it could easily be implemented as a mastery. Plus i think due to all the nerfs warriors have been getting, it would be a nice compensation from anet.

NOOOOO
Greatswords should never be dual wielded. Ever. It completely defeats the purpose of greatswords being two handed weapons. We already have the ability to dual wield swords. We don’t need the ability to dual wield giant swords.

As much as people want to deny it he’s right.
The ‘No spears’ quote is an entirely unsubstantiated rumor which supposedly came from the devmeet after the Pax presentation. ANet has only stated there will be no new weapons.
However, spears, tridents, and spearguns are not new weapons, they are in the game already. Doesn’t mean ANet has made them in to land weapons and that they will be a feature in the expansion, personally I very much doubt it, but Anet hasn’t written it off and therefore it is still possible.

Again its a mastery that you WOULDNT have to take if you dont want to, no one is forcing you to do it. Not sure how familiar you are with this game but other proffesions that can dual wield. And most warriors would agree that dual wielding GS’s would just look completely awesome, it could be specifically locked into the warrior mastery skill line.

I don’t think his complaint had anything to do with him wanting to dual wield GS or not, its more of the fact that it makes absolute no sense, no one should be able to swing two giant swords with enough precision and strength to cut through things. Many professions can dual wield, yes, but they can’t dual wield Two-Handed Weapons. Idk how ‘most warriors’ would feel about dual wielding gs, but in my case i just think it would look stupid.

I think it’s worth clearing up the “Spears as land weapons” discussion for a few reasons. “No new weapon types” wouldn’t technically eliminate land spears on a class. Also, in the trailer at the end of S2, a Sylvari impales someone on a spear, on land. It’s gonna stink for players hoping to get land spears and they wouldn’t be wrong to get excited for them after seeing the reasons I left above. If you don’t comment, I will figure land spears will be a thing that you guys want to surprise us with. If you do comment, I will figure it’s to dispel the land spear myth, which would be a good thing. No one wants to get hyped about something that isn’t making its way into the game.
