Anet devs stated multiple of times that HoT focuses on “foundations” rather than a typical content (even in the most recent ready up, Jon Peters repeated it). Which basically means it’s a paid feature pack (foundations are basically features) with some living story put on it.

Can’t blame them though, that’s what expansions are essentially. What is different is the usual ratio between new features and new content.

And if I don’t trust ANet to deliver a great product, they show me the middle finger instead of trying to win me over. That’s encouraging.

ANet has already annoyed a lot of players with their low-quality LS updates, stupid NPE and trait revamps and a multitude of other things. I haven’t played GW2 for months. I checked out the expansion, thinking maybe it’d be a good place to come back, but it’s “pre-purchase or go away”. Ok, I’ll go away, I suppose. Again.

It’s because Anet isn’t confident enough so they make you pay for the unknown product already, unlike a typical pre-order which you can simply cancel because you haven’t paid for it yet.

Even after that blog post I still don’t feel too hot(pun intended) about the expansion pack. Form what we’ve seen and hear so far from anet it doesn’t seem like much content yet it has a 50.00 base price, unless this expansion is up to caliber with expansions like WoW and FF14 then it’s not even worth it tbh. We need Anet to reveal more about the content coming to HoT so I can finally set my mind at ease(or disappointment).

If the $50 price tag for the Xpac is too much for you, then don’t buy it and wait until it’s sold months later at a discount.

Honestly, some people will never be happy no matter what Anet does.

The fact that the next expansion would follow the same fate is already an indication of where this could be heading and I don’t want to be a part of it.

I never mentioned an ideal price for the expansion. Personally I expected a 35€ one at most which would have been fair in my book, not paying more than that.

honestly, i got the impression that for myself and others, that the issue a not so much a lack of a character slot as it was an inflated price for what was offered (as another slot added another ten dollars). now that it includes the slot, i feel it’s fair.

would i pay full post release price for the expac with no slot? no. new players might. but anet will see how many others will.

as for veteran benefits, that is the lamest rationale ever. without a subscription fee, a “vet” is anyone who’s purchased the game once. while i personally have spent hundreds in the gem store, i don’t expect any different treatment than someone who could only afford the initial cost.

A cheaper price tag if you havent figured it out already.

I haven’t figured it out because you haven’t said it.

What’s the price?

Stop defending them “Majic.4801” like they are familly! You should consider that is easier for everyone to stand and hand over the cash like Bill Gates if there where something real to consider in that expansion…Just use more brain power and think what they offer and you truly gain…Think of what they did with GW2 core game when ppl asked to show…they broke alot of good things…and they still do!And don’t make me write a full list of…This is not funny…and you don’t play with ppl minds like a God,because you own a game!

I’m not defending anyone. I’m just trying to figure out what some people are upset about that others aren’t. In most cases it’s pretty straightforward, in others it’s not.

So I’m asking.

Just let it go… I have no numbers but it seems most or atleast alot of players are actually happy with this turn of events. So those left are ungreatfull and can’t even give feedback on what should have been given instead.

just look at this recent post.

I think the expansion should cost maybe 20 dollars?… If that… Will just have to wait and see what content is actually included in this release. It’s hard to think there’ll be enough content to justify the hefty price tag. Will also be watching Metacritic upon release for the reviews.

He/she claims that the expansion should only cost 20$ or not even that becouse he/she havent seen all the content yet and also what has been revealed still doesn’t make it worth more than an Alpha game on steam. I mean they are not even realistic.
Sure it is their opinions and I won’t take it away from them but we should not even try to understand what they are upset about. Some may be upset that the water in their tub today was cold and they blame it on Anet.

Well first off, they don’t have the plethora of legendary weapons, ascended gear, and other rare items (dyes, food, etc) that I do. Sure new players get the base game free but they’ve already missed out on 3 years of experiences which is easily worth the $60.00 I paid for this game back when I bought it in 2012, not to mention they have to start from scratch! (level 1 GG).

Also, I was planning on buying gems when HoT came out anyways lol and i’ll equate

Additional Character Slot TIMES 2!
Miniature Revenant Rytlock
Revenant Finisher
Mordremoth’s Bane Guild Hall Decoration
Heart of Thorns Glider Skin

to $20.00 so I’m quite happy about the purchase

Thats a function of time an effort, not money spent. Any new player can invest the time needed to do that, and frankly the only real advantage existing players have is NOT having to power level from scratch just to reach HOT content.

This bothers me a bit because the influx of new players won’t be able to enjoy the new content for least a month (roughly how much time it takes to understand enough of the game to move around with purpose), of which none of the Vet players will be around to help them learn the game faster.

There was a reason the old GW games had their core story lines accessible at a relatively early stage of the game…. it was intent on having the imported and new characters (new classes) mingle quickly, so the content can be enjoyed as a group.

What would had helped greatly at several levels of user experience was to produce a starter Zone for HOT, and interlink the existing Story element of the Civilian support (as seen in Silvewastes) as recruitment tool to jump new players into HOT right away. With the current time line, all plot holes could had been avoided by not using Destiny’s Edge as the main characters, and instead using Destiny’s Call (place holder name for Braham’s crew) since they have no attachment to the first personal story.

The only valid argument now is to hold out on pre-purchase if you feel you have too little information to deem if YOU subjectively feel the content of the xpac is not worth $50.

Many others DO believe the content is worth it and have now signed up – myself included now that veterans got the extra character slot added from yesterday’s pre-purchase bonus.

Stating that the xpac should be cheaper is your subjective wish and clearly not shared by a large number of players who have already opted in. It’s not just HoT but as a B2P+ game, I’m regarding this as payment+support for the next 2 years or so until we get the next expansion after that.

Anet is a company that needs money to keep developing this game; since the pre-purchase community address yesterday, I – at least – feel they are proceeding forward with decency in their effort to earn money with these pre-purchases.

You’re in every right to want more information before you opt in, but please stop with your subjective valueing of the expansion. On one hand, you’re asking for more information before you pre-purchase, but on the other hand, lacking that you’re more than willing to reduce the expansion’s value well aware that there is more to this expansion that we know so far…

So everytime in your life when all of you spent money on something you always knew in advance the total content and usefulness of what you just bought? Did you always know the complete in-depth content of any expansion you ever bought in advance? Including not only how many maps/dungeons etc. but also how big and detailled they were?

Plus,

what is your personal limit of money per time unit to make you feel it was not overprized? If you spend 50 hours in HoT, it will be 1$ per hour. Is that to high? Compare it to other activities. I always compare to movie theatre visits. Man, they are expensive in comparison to almost everything.

Plus:

you can easily wait for the final release and reports of others about the content. No one is forcing you.

So,

what the heck are you talking about here?!?

I can’t see how this is misleading? It’s quite clear. Pre-purchase the expansion, get the slot if you’re a veteran. It has nothing to do with “loyalty” and everything to do with giving people an incentive to pre-purchase.

If people are worried about content (I still am) they will be able to pre-purchase all the way up to shortly before launch (I probably will) and still get this offer. Either way, you don’t have to buy now, that said, you’re always taking a gamble on MMO expansions kitten much of the value is delivered after release.

sadly.

I all heard was. You bought core game $60.00 USD on release.

Now you spent $100USD

which is can be the equivalent break down of Core game ($60 USD) + 4000 gems ( $50 USD) in Black lion TP, = $110 USD.

hence,
110 – 10 = 100 thus the 10 dollars you saved is all the extra stuff they tacked on to it and the expansion.

However, You already own the Core game — therefore you gave $ 50 USD away for the expansion, bought yourself 4000 gems from the black lion for another $50 and got a bunch of tacked on junk with it for free.

new players are still better off – they will get everything you just got and save the initial $60.00 you gave for free.
___________________ INSTEAD_______________________________
You should have just bought the expansion itself, and bought 4000 gems following that.
[You could have saved $20.00 or more assuming Heart of Thorns can be sold separate]

What you said doesnt add up. 4000 gems = $50.. so buying HoT = $50 (HoT) + $50 (4000 gems) = $100

that leaves you short of 1 character slot ($10) 1 Mini pet = ($3.5) I glider skin = ($6), 1 finisher = ($6),

What you’re suggesting would be paying just $10 less but missing out on over $45 worth of stuff.

because yeah sure you save $10 but you get $25 less stuff, miss out on Living story Season 2 which you need to buy for another $20 AND much worst you miss out on 3 years of Guild wars 2, including all season 1 that you cannot even get to experiance, not being there for all those one of events of the early days, or be there the first time the holiday events appeared and that is worth WAY, WAYYYYYY more then $10

No, it’s because part of pre-purchasing is getting access to the betas and possibly other in-game rewards. So you’ll have got something for your money straight away (or at least when the next beta event occurs).

I can tell you why I pre-ordered it. Its true we have no clue how much content there is going to be but we know what Anet did so far. They spent 2 1/2 years releasing content constantly while working on the expansion. Content thats heavy on story which is something I like. That contrasts with other MMOs I’ve play were you hardly get any content updates while they develop an expansion and the content you get if any is generally dungeons you’re meant to repeat over and over and thats content I personally dont particularly enjoy. I am happy to buy the expansion just based on that premise never mind that chances are this is going to be repeated for the next 2-3 years.

Then there is what they have revealed so far. Guild halls are big features with lots of goodies (new crafting profession, Arena, decorations, huge map etc..) Specalizations that if you factor in skills and traits they provide they’re like 2 new professions (each specialization is 1/5 of a profession (1 heal vs 4, 4 utility vs 20 , 1 elite vs 5 1 trait line vs 5) with the revenant thats like they’re releasing 3 new professions (the equivalent) and expansions generally dont have more then 2 in my experiance. Then there is the whole trait and skill system rework which many expansions dont even touch.

So while yeah there is still alot that I havent heard about but what was revealed so far appear to be well done and plentiful.

This.

Pre-purchasing isn’t the same as buying after launch. There is much greater meaning to pre-purchasing a game, you are literally trusting Anet to deliver a great product, and for that trust Anet is thanking veteran players in the form of a character slot.

And if I don’t trust ANet to deliver a great product, they show me the middle finger instead of trying to win me over. That’s encouraging.

Thanks for answering. Everyone has their price.

I think it’s still too early to know whether HoT is going to be worth the price or not. There’s still a lot we don’t know, so pre-purchasing is an act of faith.

A lot of people were specifically upset about the character slot issue, and said so, which made it fairly simple for ArenaNet to do something about it. They certainly didn’t satisfy everyone (you only get it if you pre-purchase, for example), but it was a step in the right direction.

I was asking for specifics because that’s what ArenaNet would need, and I’m curious. A lot of complaints here and elsewhere are expressions of vague dissatisfaction or accusations of greed, incompetence or ill intent on the part of ArenaNet, and because they tend to be nebulous, unfocused and personal in nature, there’s really not much ArenaNet could do about them. Those kinds of complaints are usually impossible to resolve proactively.

That said, now it’s up to ArenaNet to make the case for buying the expansion, and my advice is not to buy it unless you’re satisfied with the terms.

We’ll see how it goes.

Whilst it is subjective, the amount of people who have pre-ordered the game I HIGHLY doubt would count as anything near to ‘a large amount’. Now, I know a ‘large’ amount of players who won’t play GW2 for reasons, many who are awaiting information regarding them, which if not involved, will simply quit, I may be one of them. Again… veteran players who don’t pre-order will not get a character slot. It shouldn’t be regarded as a freebie, more what is expected after years of the company developing… Seems like a tactical con to clear the animosity and encourage people to pay before they actually know the substance of what they’re getting. If you only want to roam around Guild Halls, or sit in 3 maps with likely repetitive and boring world events (world events weren’t exactly a huge success), then I am glad that you are happy to pre-purchase, I have nothing against that and fair play to you. The concern is with the rest of the fans and people who would be fans if they did something. This character slot malarky is just another knife in the back.

Dear people, how is someone scheming against you this time around? Pre-purchase is clearly what it states: purchase in advance. And guess what. Nobody’s forcing you to do it. Nobody’s telling you “Buy now when you don’t know/trust the product or you won’t ever play this game, inser-evil-corporate-laugh™!”, nobody’s forcing you to buy it directly from ANet, either, as it will be distributed through normal retail stores, it will be available through pre-orders (which are orders, not payments in advance), it will be available to buy after release.

You can still wait. You will be able to get your expansion the minute it launches, even days after it, or never, depending on whenever you deem it worthy of your money. The only thing you get out of a pre-purchase is your show of trust in the developers. If you have it, devs will just give you something extra on the side (a shiny title to brag with on the internet, basically) and let you into backstage testing (beta), that’s literally all of it. It’s basically like buying a sponsor upgrade to anything – you show you have faith in the product, you show your support to it. And support’s a beautiful thing, because it’s voluntary.

The solution is simple now: you don’t think you’re being offered enough? Then don’t buy it. You don’t think the price is fair? Don’t buy it. Feel free to wait. Or don’t. You’re free to do with your money as you see fit. As we all are.

Now offer looks more fair, but I personally don’t like that “pre-purchase and register before launch” part to get that bonus character slot. I think that free slot should be given to every upgrade from base version to expanded one from now and forever (I mean all future expansions, not only HoT).

I’m ok with price after some thinking about it. For our initial buy we got enough free updates, so I’m sure, even if initial expansion could be not so big at start, it will grow with time. Also, policy with merging expansions into base version is ok as long as vets will have their fair offer too. It is normal that who plays longer pays more.

So, the question now is: will be character slot available as bonus to any upgrade and not only with pre-purchase. If answer is yes, I will definitely pre-purchase HoT. It may look weird, but I stand for fair treatment for all customers. If I pre-purchase it should be my free will, not because this is the only chance to get bonus slot.

As we mentioned in several posts on the forums and in various other media, we have been reading and gathering your feedback about the Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns pre-purchase.

Please see this blog post for new information on the Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns pre-purchase.

Thank you again for sharing your thoughts!

Big props to ANet for trying to make things right and showing some sort of appreciation to their veteran playerbase. Ty for trying to restore our faith in you. Unfortunately I still won’t be pre-ordering HoT or buying it until I see some game-breaking bugs and issues adressed and fixed in the live version.

A well informed and responsible decision is always the best decision! Want to know what bugs and issues I’m talking about? Here is a thread I made a couple of days ago, that explains thing in detail.

If that’s not enough, u can always visit the Bugs Forum or use the old reliable Google.

Don’t let ANet throw sand in your eyes guys! Pls stop straying away from what really matters. Don’t get caught in mindless discussions about price tags, or character slots or even dodgy marketing moves. They want us to invest in a expansion pack, when the core game is still broken. Sry ANet, my common sense doesn’t allow me to justify that…

For all players who purchased the Guild Wars 2 core game from our website and registered it between January 23, 2015 and June 16, 2015 in anticipation of Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns, we will automatically refund what you paid for the core game should you decide to pre-purchase Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns from our website or in-game store any time through July 31, 2015. If you take advantage of this refund and pre-purchase Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns, all of your current account progress will be kept intact.

I refuse to buy an expansion pack without more character slots. Playing for almost 6 months I already maxed them and I need more to play Revenant. I’m not gonna put out €
75 to get another slot.

The blog post states “For all players who registered the core Guild Wars 2® game prior to January 23, 2015 and who upgrade their account by prepurchasing and registering any Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns edition before Guild Wars 2: Heart of Thorns‘ launch, we will add one additional character slot to your Guild Wars 2 account.”

I started playing January 25, 2015 and my friend a few weeks later.

Thanks for clarifying that we wont be buying this expansion until it goes on sale.

So you didn’t buy the game from there website? if you did,

What would it take?

A cheaper price tag if you havent figured it out already. Also it has been said that if new expansions are released they will follow the same path. Do I want to give money to such a company? Not a chance.

If people want to be treated like dummies and blinded by a char slot, fine their choice but I’m no such person. Keep in mind one thing though. This free char slot is for pre order only and theres been no mention of it after release.

They could have easily avoided shooting their own foot by offering a separately less priced expansion for current owners. None of this would have happened but greed took its toll and this is where it led them to.

Even worse now word will simply go that players are “satisfied” with this and will overshadow the real issue.

Anet has simply gave me yet another stronger reason why I won’t buy this expansion and potentially following ones

if you want it cheaper, look for the authorised 3rd party sellers, and pick one. In the UK Amazon is selling the base one for almost £10 cheaper than ANet.

Get me straight, you got the game on sell for 75% off ( 10 bucks iirc? ), and now is complaining?

k, moving on, nothing worth to see here.

Having read most of the pitchfork threads before, most of the people said that they would be fine with a character slot added to the offer.

Now they have added that and people say “but it’s only a character slot”, “but it’s only if you pre-purchase”… And then the remarkable “core game is still broken” which makes even less sense.

If it has nothing to do with veteran loyalty then why have ArenaNet just added a free character slot on pre-purchase for those who have been playing since before January 23rd? The angry response has everything to do with veteran loyalty and the lack of recognition thereof.

Well you can still prepurchase only when more info is available. For example, you wait until the last moment before HoT releases, or you wait until after the first few beta events to see the feedback?

Yes prepurchasing blindly isn’t a good thing but there might be a point where enough info is available at all where you’ll feel confident in what you’ll get? Until then, just wait and see.

Now the deal is slightly more fair. Yes it should be for all existing accounts. And yes, the core game is broken.

All valid points.

FYI… Didn’t Anet say at some point that the personal story would be revamped? I haven’t seen anything in a long time regarding it, who knows…

I agree, “veteran player appreciation” would be if they gave vets a slot regardless of when they upgrade, not only if they decide to buy a cat in a bag. It’s a test of faith if anything.

Can any one tell me , if the HoT xpac is a choise for the customers (they said core game works without it) then why there isnt any core game sale at the market? I was planing to buy 2 account for my nices before HoT, now ANET forcing me to buy the HoT to play the core game. I am not going to buy HoT for myself (playing since 2012) and i will not buy HoT for my nices.

While the core game will still have the FUTURES coming with the hot, so i am not going to pay 3 small map the 150$. If they realy call this an xpac make the other parts of the maps aka Desolated Sands , Orr , northern shiverpeaks, rest of the maguma ect ect. Shortly make the whole map that is shown when you push the M button.

ANET has waited 3 years for to make the first xpac of the Guild wars 2 and in that they have made a 3 small map which covers the 1/3 of maguma jungle.

You are trying to sell us some futures not an expansion. So stop calling this thing an expansion. I dont know what you did to your old Guild Wars 1 development team but if you fired them, call them back and let them teach your inexperienced develepment team how to make an expansion

Exp: Factions + Nightfall + Eye of the North

These are expansions , not this mutant you are forcing us to buy.

And then the remarkable “core game is still broken” which makes even less sense.

What I find remarkable is that, after all this time, ppl are still oblivious to the issues that damage the game ppl love so much. (As I do… I love this game)

Non-sense is supporting a company, with a 45€ perchause, when an official dev reply to the issues and bugs I mentioned is still to b found.

If u don’t think the core game has serious issues, pls get a bit more informed, before replying again…

If you think that’s the only way Anet will get away, adding a character slot thing that was supposed to be there from the start, you are misslead…and you should stop even post serenke.4806.Try to see the problem as a whole….“If you are good, you survive,if you are not,you die!” This is real life in business!!!

No, it’s because part of pre-purchasing is getting access to the betas and possibly other in-game rewards. So you’ll have got something for your money straight away (or at least when the next beta event occurs).

Nothing stops them from having a pre-order together with pre-purchase.

Well, thank you Anet and of course a very big thank you all to the angry zerg of players that have achieved this.

Now I’m happy to prepurchase HoT although the price is still high but, well, I wanna play it….
