So, while deciding on the next class I wanted to make, I realized something. In the character creation screen, each race has a color/them to it, Humans being yellow, Norns being blue, Asura being purple, Sylvari being green, and finally Charr being red. Now, this may seem simple and meaningless, but what about the profession selection screen? Warriors are themed yellow, same as humans. Guardians are themed blue, like the Norns. Rangers: green, like Sylvari. Mesmers are purple, like the Asura. Mere coincidence? Maybe. But those four races wear respective armor to the class they match colors with. (Can’t be too sure about Syvlari, as it could be their plant cultural armor, which is hard to tell which class of armor it is without actually checking the piece itself.) The human is also seen with a greatsword, which Warriors use, and the Asura has a staff, used by the Mesmer. But what about the Charr? In the current game, there are no classes themed red in the profession screen. But, on the Heart of Thorns page, the reveal of the Revenant has the class surrounded by a red mist, even holding it in his free hand, suggesting that the class may be themed red. Now, Rytlock, in the Heart of Thorns trailer, seems to be wearing heavy armor. The red Charr in the character creation is wearing heavy armor. The Charr is also wielding an axe and a shield, suggesting this may be a weapon combo for the Revenant.

As far as I know the creation screen hasn’t changed since launch. While large things like what the Sylvari really are were designed in from the start, I think smaller game mechanic choices have likely been iterated beyond recognition. They may not even have had Revenants in mind back then, though it does seem they have been planning Rytlock’s role in it for a good while.

So while it’s a clever idea, I think it gives ANet too much credit for planning ahead

- Staff
- Hammer
- Axe
- Sword
- Shield
- Dagger

I’d be tempted to say something like: MH Axe, MH Mace, MH Sword, OH Shield, OH Focus, OH Dagger, Greatsword, Hammer, Staff. However that might be somewhat too similar to the Guardian.

There’s probably a good chance that axe and shield are revenant weapons, however, I don’t think anything can be drawn from links between profession and race colours. Humans are no more inclined towards warriors than norn or charr… and if you go through the character creation screen, the human colour is actually closer to the engineer colour, which is a profession most associated to charr and asura. Braham aside, norn are not the race most associated with guardians (humans invented that profession). The sylvari colour, to my eye, is not an exact match to ranger OR necromancer, but somewhere in between. (And, in fact, of the sylvari sets, what the female sylvari is wearing looks closest to Snapdragon to me. There’s a medium set that has a brief top on female sylvari, but it has pants and a very short leaf skirt rather than the long one in the character creation screen.)

I think what colour matches there are between race and profession are either coincidental or drawing from a common cause. Humans are yellow because the Krytan royal colours are white and gold. Norn are blue to reflect the cold Shiverpeaks. Charr red symbolises war, fire and blood, all important to the charr (the Flame Legion may no longer have the power it once had, but it named itself that for a reason, and fire is important to produce both ash and iron).

For sylvari it’s a case of a common root. Rangers are green due to their connection to nature, which is normally represented through the green-ness of plants, while sylvari are green because they ARE plants.

For asura, it’s a little murkier. My feeling is that it’s a case of purple being associated with the control of magic itself, which is the basis of many asura technologies as well as mesmer powers. In that case, though, it’s unclear which purple was associated with first – effects that involve the direct manipulation of magic, which the mesmer uses, or whether it was first associated with the mesmer and the association with direct manipulation of magical energy is because that’s what mesmer do.

To those who think Scarlet hate means she’s succeeded as a villain:
People don’t hate Scarlet like Game of Thrones fans hate Joffrey.
They hate her the way Star Wars fans hate Jar Jar Binks.

Warriors are themed yellow, same as humans.

Warriors are themed an orange-y colour. Also, rangers and necros are both themed green. The colour association between professions is very likely a coincidence.

That’s where things are a little weird, actually – in GW1 elementalists were red, but in GW2 they’re shifted a little towards purple. ‘Magenta’ may be the appropriate term.

The thief is a reddish orange, in contrast to the warrior which is a yellowish orange. At the moment, there isn’t a true red among the GW2 professions.
